Silent Hunter 4 WernerSobe Sonar Only Tutorial

This is the big one. Complete instructions in how to attack a target in manual mode using only your sonar to develop TDC data. Really? Then you must really be bugged how oversimplified the Silent Hunter 4 sonar is. When you read the manuals you read all about the acoustic vs the supersonic, with all the filters available to the real sonar operators and realize that submarine simulation is in its infancy. It just isn't that realistic.

I should hope not. Real sonar operation is a team concept, not an individual pursuit. And I trust we've learned a thing or three since WWII. And of course now you don't need an exact solution anyway. You get one that's adequate, send out the MK-28 and it does the rest.

Problem with your video, is you can't see the fine details, because you recorded it at too low level.
Try HD next time. Looks interesting though.

There was no HD when this video was made. It shows the process clearly and nine years after it was made is still the only video on You Tube showing sonar only attack with the position keeper. He's no longer making videos and this one is clear enough that my cat understands how to do the attack.

Hi RockinRobbins13! Always wanted to talk to you. Thanks for the support and advice thru the years. I've been playing this simulation since Silent Service on the Atari 800XL. My question:How do you use sonar only approach against convoys with escorts listening? Again, nothing but the greatest admiration. Good Luck and Good Hunting

bit late, but did you ever work this out? Using sonar-only against merchants with warship escorts is really difficult. :(

With the game sonar it is very, very difficult to do sonar only targeting with convoys. Mostly you can only position your boat so a single target is isolated from other targets. Mix in the escorts and then they can know you're out there and what direction you are, but don't know your exact position. That's bad enough that use of active sonar around escorts isn't really advisable.
