interesting how many commenters did not notice that the most famous part of the song is missed, because thats a bad shortened/cut version. the entire guitar solo which made the track famous in the first place is not there.
Rere the song was released in 1978. It tells the story of the band going into a pub and seeing another band (The Sultans of Swing) playing jazz music. Nobody in the audience is really interested in hearing the band on stage, but the band on stage doesn’t really seem to care, they are just happy to play their music. Evidently the story really happened. The Alchemy Live version of the song is the one to see because it really shows off Mark Knopfler’s incredible live guitar playing. Other songs to hear are telegraph Road, Romeo and Juliette, Brothers in Arms, Walk of Life, and I Want My MTV. Brothers in Arms is stunning and shows a different side of the band.
Born in Glasgow, lived near Newcastle as kids and then formed this band in London. Mark and David Knopfler. This was their breakthrough hit. Genre wise it isn't straightforward to define, but it does fall generally into rock and pop. It's kinda rock and roll and a bit bluesy. There are other Dire Straits songs that you have to call rock classics. Private Investigations, for example, although much of it is quite soft, and on acoustic guitar, it builds into this awesome rock ending with an electric guitar.
Good reaction but this is a cut version.Alchemy version is the correct version of sultan of swing.the another masterpiece is telegraph road(alchemy live) tunnel of love(alchemy live),romeo and Juliet (live)
Exactly the song is from 1978. It's about a band he saw in a pub in London. The guitarist, leader of the band, is Mark Knoffler, excellent with his instrument with a peculiar way of playing without a pick. That the final solo in the song is cut is a real crime. Can examine many songs because they have a lot of quality.
Where is the legendary end solo? So sorry this video cuts it off and you weren’t able to hear it! Try Wembley live 1985 with the sax ua-cam.com/video/eqxpQA5etd4/v-deo.htmlsi=Y_baBobDvuQdP4sY Or Alchemy live 1983!
Mark has been putting out great solo music for the last 25 years. I would love to see you react to a song called SPEEDWAY AT NAZARETH….the version with Emmylou Harris. After watching some live performances of Dire Straits there will be no doubt that the genre is ‘rock and roll’. A great ‘live’ band! Love your reactions!
Guessing with your accent you are familiar with London & it's "Wild West End" , a favorite track off of the debut album which also included "Sultans of Swing"
Like someone mentioned about the Alchemy version. Is an extended version with more amazing guitar playing and the drummer is impressive too. To save you looking it up, here is the link to that version if you are interested, ua-cam.com/video/8Pa9x9fZBtY/v-deo.htmlsi=v5ykXzvm-0g8JGeD.
The lead singer Mark is known for being one of the greatest finger picking guitarist & Singer S ong writers just like this one sultans of swing . One song he wrote become a smash it for a different Singer The Song Private dancer the singer Tina Turner
Dire Straits are (were) epic live, it was a time when progressive music was becoming mainstream, and the crossover brought musicianship to the fore. You won't go far wrong with live performances from the 'alchemy' tour (there'sa DVD)- it was a double live LP (vinyl) and back in the day (yes I'lm OLD!) progressive bands rarely bothered with the charts or even singles - and you often found the more experimental the band were the less you could pigeonhole their music into genres. Great reaction, you'll get a lot of us 'oldies' telling you it's good to see your reaction - and it is! It almost recaptures the first time WE heard them and our feelings.
Like a lot of "official videos" this version cuts off verses and epic solo guitar work. So I'll jump on the band wagon Alchemy Live. You'll be getting a ton of requests for that version. 👍😎❤️
The Alchemy Live version is the best, check it out, You won't regret that. This version is really great too but whoever posted this on UA-cam should be banned from uploading, one of the best outro solos ever being cut short like this is just sacrilege.

🌿🌿 .. Hello. So , Dire Straits has many other great songs for you to enjoy. Try , "Money For Nothing" . The singer & lead singer is Mark Knopfler , and in my opinion he is in the elite group of Rock guitarist like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton , Jimmy Hendricks , Eddie Van Halen, Jimmie Hendrix and David Gilmore. Mark has a unique way of playing his instrument and has a very unique voice. Another great song is "Brothers In Arms". 🌿🌿
I love Mark's playing but I think he'd tell you Sonny Landreth is the man for slide. And Derek Trucks is pretty astounding too. For just pure finger picking though Mark is the guy.
Sko sorry you didn't listen to the Alchemy version. You really missed out . Several listeners have given you the link, do not miss out, it is remarkable.
Hi Rere, lovely to meet you. May i suggest you re-watch with the far superior Alchemy video? Just not fair. Some bands are better live. Trust me. You missed half the show..Including more guitar.
Just discovered your channel.. someone had u react to a good version of this song, but nowhere near the BEST… This song done at Alchemy Live is one of the top 5 live Rock Performances of ALL TIME.. It will sound like a completely different song to you. You will find yourself playing it all the time, once hearing it… I’m an old guy who was a young man when this song first came out, and Sadly I just discovered that version myself, last year.. now it’s on my phone and i’m constantly playing it in the car wherever I go.
Sorry to see you choose the wrong version. You missed out on the best guitar solo ever done! Sorry to see you choose the wrong version. You missed out on the best guitar solo ever done/played!!! You should have looked/listen to this one 👇👇👇 Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing (Alchemy Live)
Oh sad, you got the cut edition, coz that was so bad because it was cut before they got going!! UA-cam being evil again. Find the version that includes the awesome REST OF THE SONG!! You were robbed. And the style? Dire Straits are their OWN style!
Dire straits were a genre of their own. Like many other bands at the time they made some brilliant albums and then expanded greatly the songs when playing live. Certainly listen to the studio versions but a revisit of the live versions of the likes of this (alchemy live) and somebody to love queen (Montreal ‘81) will blow your mind and grow your channel.
The sad thing is for an "official" video it cuts a lot even from the album cut and radio edit. The end solo is just gone. It does my heart good to see someone discover Mark and Dire Straits but this is a bare representation of a much deeper tapestry.
If possible stay away from MTV music videos, they are usually cut and highly edited and most if not always not Live performances. You should have either listened to the song off the album or the Alchemy Liver performance.
Thanks for using the studio version instead of the live Alchemy version which sucks. The original Sultan of Swingg is the most pure song i've ever heard. I can listen to that song forever and never get bored of it. Thank you for your channel.
There is, always, "one" and it is YOU !! The Alchemy version is one of the greatest Live performances on here and I bought my first records in London in 1960...
@@Isleofskye There's at least 2 of us. The live version doesnt suck, but the studio version should always be a person's introduction to a song. Not just this one, but almost every song. It's the cleanest recording, everyone plays perfectly, the sound mix is clear and you can hear the instrumentation and vocals clearly and understand the lyrics. Plus, it's the version everyone knows, that we've all heard on the radio for years. You may be bored with it, but the reactor hasn't heard it yet, and they need to hear it in order to better appreciate other versions. I realize this video is cut short. @@bossfan49 Quite easy. Some Reactors have never heard of Pink Floyd let alone the track so, suddenly, being confronted with one of the greatest solos ever on a stage(in most afficionados opinion) would come as quite a surprise I should think.😀

the Alchemy live version will blow your mind
cool reaction. the Alchemy live version of this song is epic
this version cut the guitar solo at the end off, damn
They are their own genre.
The genre is Dire Straits. Some bands are so unique they are simply themselves. This song is about the music scene in south London.
That version cuts off the ending solo which is amazing!

This is the shortened version, you should look for the full song. Early seventies.
Your soul would have settled so gracefully into the 70s - 80s. Might have seen you there.
Same song (Sultans of Swing Alchemy Live) You will be Amazed!!!
The genre? I think it's simply excellent late '70s pop/rock...
I enjoy your reactions Rere, and look fwd to more!
These guys were really good. Lots of great songs! Thanks for sharing this one.
