From your accent I'm guessing you may be South African and at 36 years old you would have been born around the time Dire Straits headlined The Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium before a global audience of over 600m. The concert helped heap pressure on the South African government to release Mandela and bring apartheid to an end. Dire Straits were actually on hiatus at the time after a massive world tour and got back together specially. Their then rhythm guitarist Jack Sonni couldn't make it though as he was home in New York where his wife had just given birth to twins. Fortunately they were able to draft in a replacement, some chap called Eric Clapton. The whole set was great and well worth watching. In particular I strongly recommend checking out their performance of Brothers In Arms. It's a sublime song and it's the most emotional rendition of it Mark Knopfler's ever given.
Every time I meet someone who didn't know anything about this band and their music, I am amazed. For me they are one of the essential bands of the Rock world. And Mark's guitar... My God... Las time i see them live was in.. August 1992 And it was one of the best live shows i have ever been!

I think Terry, in his prime, was one of the most technical drummers out there. His power and precision in this performance is unmatched. Terry is now 76 and retired in Wales. Of course, Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists in the world, and pretty humble. If you ask him, he'll tell you that he barely knows how to hold the damned thing. Just one of the best live performances in rock.
@mlong1958 and also Terry is one if my uncles closest friends ,my uncle is wes Reynolds, was part of the corncrackers back in the 60s with deke Leonard. Thankfully not just a distant uncle, but my mums younger brother
I don't he was the most technical (he of course was technical, but as much compared to some of the drumming greats), but what he had over most other drummers was next level intensity and passion, and few could match this. I defo think he is one of the most underrated drummers of all time.
Talking of being humble I saw an interview with Mark recently and he was asked about his reaction to being called the greatest guitarist in the world. His response was "what a load of nonsense".
the endurance it would take as a drummer to play this song with all those fills and holding that TIGHT pocket is amazing. Even with the breakdown giving you a rest, your forearms would be in FIRE

Thank God this masterpiece has been preserved forever on video. A young Mark Knopfler and his compadres, in my opinion, made music history with their signature song Sultans of Swing (Alchemy Live) the night of this performance. I have viewed this dozens of times ever since it has been on UA-cam, and it sounds as fresh and new as it did the first time. Knopfler is a genius when it comes to the guitar.

Saw them in in 1991 in Scotland, the "On Every Street Tour"....however, as a 19yr old when Alchemy came out it has always been and forever will be the concert I wish I had gone to see.

from JAPAN. Dire Straits is one of my favorite bands, along with BAND-MAID. The vocals show the influence of Bob Dylan. Most notable is Mark Knopfler's fingerpicking guitar. His guitar solos are technical, very emotional, and full of his personality. They are also very accomplished as a live band, and have a sophistication that you don't find in rock bands that approach you with loud music. Anyway, I really enjoy listening to this band.

@@binxbolling you need hearing aids lol, Telegraph Road and Tunnel of Love are hands down their best performances of all time, but I guess there's always 1 ;)
Dire Straits was one of my favorite bands back in the 80's and 90's when I was in the Army. They still are today. Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists ever.
I dont know why but I get a bit emotional when hearing the perfection off the guitar riff and seeing him on the drums after someone said his mum and dad were there it really made me feel so proud of them all. Music nowadays with auto tune ghost writers and computerised instrumentals isn't the same and cant hold a candle next to the oldskool guys and gals 👍😎
This performance was incredible. They all rock this one in their own way. Mark Knopfler is a guitar genius & he his band mates were having such a fun time up there. Wonderful show. Thank you for sharing this one.
It's a great feel good story that this was the first time Terry's father saw him play live. It wasn't. Terry used to drum for Yes. This was the first time Terry's dad saw him live with Dire Straits. Mark Knopfler is truly a GOD among guitar players due to his finger plucking style, instead of using a pick. The banjo roll, using thumb and first three fingers. One of maybe 10 guitarists in the world that can maintain constant 1/16th note riffs finger plucking. Then there's the fact he's left handed, self taught and couldn't read music. Mark said he was a guitar teacher's nightmare recently LMAO! No autotune and definitely using tube style amps, as their Hertz range is 200-20,000. Human hearing is 800-12000. Digital music is only 1000 hertz to 10,000 hertz, losing 200 on bottom end that you can't hear and 2000 on the top end that is lost in all digital recordings and music. This is pure talent and true masters of their craft!
The average human hearing goes down closer to 20hz, not 800hz, a quick google search will also tell you this. Plus, the average upper range is around 15,000-17,000hz, with some being able to hear up to 20,000hz. A 30hz test tone on my subwoofer is heard quite easily. Plus, if digital music only goes down to 1000hz, why don't small bookshelf speakers have the same apparent low frequency sound as a high-end pair of tower speakers (or even subwoofer)? Seeing as you said digital music doesn't go below 1000hz and most small bookshelf speakers can go down to 80hz or even lower. If what you say is the case, then the 'bass' should sound the same from a depth perspective with digital sound (sound, not 'feel') on them as they are both being fed the same 1,000hz cut-off/lower limit, a frequency well inside their sub-100hz capabilities.
Mark Knoppler, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn - three of the greatest guitarists of their generation. Those of us growing up in the sixties, seventies, and eighties were so, so proud and privileged to hear and see these men and a few others not mentioned. Music these days just don’t have the same power, soul, and joy.

Hi.Smashed that like button and that subscribe button as well.I watched dozens of reactions to this masterpiece and yours is one of THE greatest.❤❤.PS If i m not wrong this was the very time when a band used wireless gear in a live concert...if you see cables let me know.
Can watch this over and over. It must have been a career highlight for them; everyone got it right and not a coincidence, were enjoying it immensely. Then throw in all the obvious talent that allows for improvisation on that level. To be honest, I'm not crazy about the song itself but the second half... wow!
You’re such a nice, humble guy. So pleased you got to hear Dire Straits. Mark is the founder, songwriter, singer and lead guitarist for the band. Really nice to watch you appreciate and respect this amazing band. May I suggest the album, ‘Making movies’, the song, ‘Brothers in arms’ and ‘Twisting by the pool’.
No auto tune, no fancy distractions... This song rivals the Queen Live Aid show as the best, raw live performance for classic rock of all time. Prove me wrong... I welcome the discussion.
Interesting that you would compare this to Queen at Live Aid because there is something iconic about both performances. They should both go down as some kind of Rock HoF performances right up there with Zeppelin in MSG back in the seventies. I just drool at the thought of going back in time to those three performances.
@Paul_Allaker8450 it's an urban legend about his parents being in the audience. Terry was playing live for about 10 yrs before Dire straits . He was in a few bands, MAN being the main 1 before DS..
@joelanderos23 Yes! Lindsey is definitely an incredible player. Got to see him performing "Big Love" live at their Orlando performance of The Dance tour 25 years ago. It sounds as if there are multiple guitars playing at the same time. He is definitely in Mark's class. One of only of few I've seen run consistent 1/16th note riffs. Mark, Lindsey, Roy Clark, and a few more.
Marc wrote music for the movie, The Princess Bride. The drummer's dad was there, so he was pumped, mr knofler let him go off, even if they played a tad faster than usual.
Actually during this tour (a masterpiece tour) the band members were: Mark Knopfler - lead vocals, guitar John Illsley - bass, background vocals Hal Lindes - guitar, background vocals Alan Clark - keyboards and piano Tommy Mandel - keyboards Terry Williams - drums (a wonderful and insane drummer LoL) not on stage during this song: Mel Collins - sax Joop de Korte - percussions
New subscriber, loved this reaction. No distortion on that lead. Finger plucking. Terry Williams doing his Animal impression on drums, amazing. I'd love you to see and react to Telegraph Road from the same concert. Probably the most complete live performance ever.
@alanbennett2140 I do like Paul Simon, but I wouldn't say he was in rock, he is more folk to me and there are some great finger pickers in folk, such as Joan Baez, Richard Thompson, Bert Jansch and Leo Kottke

I love how at around 3:30 even Knopfler is impressed at the drumming.
@@blatherama It's really John's and Mark's band and you can see they loved how Terry was tearing along!
Mark Knopfler, Lead guitar
Hal Lindes, Rhythm guitar
John Illsey, Bass guitar
Terry Williams, Drums
Alan Clark, Keys
And for these shows July 1983 additional guest keys, Tommy Mandel.
All of the band are having such a great time and that comes across very strongly, so the audience are too!!!
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising.
It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
Making a living like that wouldn't suck.🤑🤑
Shout out to the production crew. The filmography of this LIVE concert is incredible.🤩
that ain't even workin! That's the way you do it! Maybe get a blister on your little finger, maybe get a blister on your thumb!
Thank you for not pausing
"Telegraph Road" from the same concert, "Tunnel of love" from Wembley 1985 or "Calling Elvis" and "Private Investigations" from "On the night " 1993, you won't be disapointed
Yes he would be. Better to try Brothers In Arms and Money For Nothing.
@@binxbolling Absolute BS
@@StevenQ74 Those aren't good songs, smegma boy?
@@binxbolling Are you deaf or do you just have increadibly bad taste fool?
@@binxbolling you need hearing aids lol, Telegraph Road and Tunnel of Love are hands down their best performances of all time, but I guess there's always 1 ;)
Dire Straits was one of my favorite bands back in the 80's and 90's when I was in the Army. They still are today. Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists ever.
Thank you very much for not interrupting this masterpiece! B Australia
Sweet memories... One night in 1978 I had the honor of working for them as a stagehand. Some night!
This performance is OWNED by Terry Williams the drummer.
Absolutely right, amazing drum work!
Lol please Mark owns this song period
@@carlybarra6374 um, I think they both co-owned it lol.
Actually no Mark wrote the song...played to it...good drumming but no any drummer can't own any song even Neil from Rush
Arguing about the purity of gold. Ha ha.
This Drummer is out of this world
on that day, he was THE best !!!
And yet, he wasn't well regarded by the record company and someone else played on the record! That's the story anyway, doesn't make sense to me.
Thank you for not pausing the video.
Can't mention those three without adding Gary Moore into the equation. Less well known, but possibly the best of them all
I would add Paul Kossof and Peter Green. Where do you stop, though? The 60s and 70s was a golden age, though that's not to denigrate later eras.
You got a like and a subscriber based on the only reaction I’ve seen you do…. Zero interruptions, no ego in this from you. Just total respect for the band… loved it man. A+. I’ll be back
i'm gobsmacked that at your age you have never heard of this band, they were huge, and extremely talented. knopfler is a guitar icon, hero. one of the best.
Your joy whilst watching this makes me so happy! I was in high school when this song came out in 1977, but this has always been my favourite version. Luv from Canada 🇨🇦!
Mark picked with 3 finger style. Like a banjo. Awsome
He's also left-handed but plays guitar right handed
Mark is a fingerpicking God
Check out more "Dire Straits", Telegraph Road, Tunnel of love, Romeo and Juliet, and the more popular numbers but no two are similar, If you are ex military do not listen to Brothers in arms, you will be crying into your boots.
Mark is now 74 and two months ago he released his latest album. I’m the same age and have seen them twice way back in the day. You need to react to “Telegraph Road” from the same concert. ALSO “Romeo and Juliet” & “Brothers in Arms “ they are my favourite band of all time.❤️
Always thought the drumming on this live performance was banging, so cool to see a drummer (and clearly someone who gets off on music in general) enjoy it. Best track from one of my favourite live albums ever.
I'm so glad you saw this video. It's a brilliant performance. I'm happy that I lived through the 60s and 70s. The music at the time was just so diverse
A true guitar legend at the top of his game, with an incredible group of musicians. Never gets old, this remains one of the great live performances we are lucky to have through YT.
When MK was born all the galaxies, stars and planets were in the right positions ❤ Just love that charisma, talent and personality.
Dire Straits one of my fave bands with Queen Mark Knofler..one of the greatest guitarists ever
Alchemy is a fantastic album-- every song is fantastic!!
whoever invented the guitar didn't know what he was giving the world! 😍
wow...i swear this idea is my mind for years...fuly agree.
the electric guitar was, pretty much, invented by Les Paul and he new exactly what he was doing.
@@tonedumbharry I obviously need to clarify, expert: I'm talking about the guitar as an instrument, not just the electric guitar. Do you understand me now??

Thank you for letting the music play and not stopping it for banal commentary like other "react" youtubers!
Awesome reaction man. Probably the best I have seen to-date and I have watched a LOT of reactions to this particular performaance. Kudos for not pausing it, saving your comments to the end and just letting it run. 👍
Mark said that in the day,
stage lights were so hot
that it caused him to sweat
and affected his eyes, so
he wore a headband.
Thank you.
I'm sure he did. However he only ever suffered this way during the John McEnroe era. Such a crazy coincidence!!!!
They also wore suit jackets over t-shirts because collars chafed their necks and their forearms got super warm. In another mad coincidence, the same thing happened to Don Johnsons character in the worldwide smash TV show Miami Vice at exactly the same time!
WHAT......ARE.....THE.....CHANCES????? 🤯🤯🤯

@@Playinginthedark I didn't say he copied that specifically. It was a fashion of the time. Top notch Googling though! 👏
@@FrowningIke There are pictures of him on stage in the late 70s with his hair absolutely soaked with sweat. And by the time he went solo, he cut his hair short and no longer had to worry about long, wet hair flopping around.

Terry Williams on the drums here set this tune on fire 🔥🔥🔥What a performance 👏👏👏
The crazy thing about this video is that all those kids out in the audience there are now grandmas and grandpas.
That's not crazy, that's life.
And still listening to Dire Straits and anything Mark puts out!
Yeah just like me , I saw them live in 82 just amazing 🤩
😅
Can’t wait for my retirement home to rock out!
What always gets me is that we're used to seeing this moment in time and think it's extraordinary, as indeed it is. But think about when they were touring: they were doing this EVERY SINGLE NIGHT.
This is my all-time favourite performance of this song, it's epic!! Dire Straits are amazing and this guitar solo outro by Mark Knopfler is phenomenal! I definitely recommend 'Telegraph Road' from this same concert, you will love it! 😊😊
Mir war gar nicht bewusst, was für eine Maschine auch der Schlagzeuger war.. was eine musikalische Truppe … Hammer 🔨
Your reaction to the video is priceless. I think all of us here would agree. Great live performance. It never gets old. If I live to be a hundred I will never tire of seeing this rendition of "Sultans of Swing." Thank you.
I'm 49, Heard it back in the day but wasn't listening. Now i think that's it's one of the best songs i've ever heard lol. That performance was ridiculously good.
my dad showed me this song when i was like 8 or 9 years old alongside some queen and tom petty which is probably why all my friends say I have such an old music taste cause this is all i listen too, I fell in love with classic rock instantly😂
Same concert...Telegraph Road...a true masterpiece. Yes boet, I think you have been living under a rock.
I know this song wasn’t on it, but they have one of the greatest albums ever!!! Brothers in Arms is one of THE greatest albums !!! Start to finish, you can’t go wrong…Do yourself a favour, listen to that…😊👍🇦🇺
Hi.Smashed that like button and that subscribe button as well.I watched dozens of reactions to this masterpiece and yours is one of THE greatest.❤❤.PS If i m not wrong this was the very time when a band used wireless gear in a live concert...if you see cables let me know.
I love that your react video was totally into the groove. You didn't interrupt the vibe! Nice!
Can watch this over and over. It must have been a career highlight for them; everyone got it right and not a coincidence, were enjoying it immensely. Then throw in all the obvious talent that allows for improvisation on that level. To be honest, I'm not crazy about the song itself but the second half... wow!
One of the best dissection of this performance!
No autotune. No BS. Just love and fun. Genius. Legend. Period
Thank you for your comment. Enjoy the tunes my friend!
de builds and breakdowns made this so very special. Repetition with subtle build works fantastic
They clapped on 2 and 4! 😂😂. I can't get my audience to ever do that! 😅
The drummer was on fire, his Dad was in the audience and it was the 1st time hearing his son play, so Terry just went for it. ❤
@Paul_Allaker8450 it's an urban legend about his parents being in the audience. Terry was playing live for about 10 yrs before Dire straits . He was in a few bands, MAN being the main 1 before DS..
This song is even more amazing done live! They sound incredible!
Chicken Pickin, a term to describe plucking the strings, with fingers instead of a pick. Mark was and is one of the masters of this Art.
I concur
Also known as The Banjo Roll. This man has always been top 10 in the world imho.😊
along with lindsey buckingham from fleetwood mac. lindsey also plays without a pick and has many great performances.
@@joelanderos23 good call Joe, good call! 🙏🤣♥️🔥✌️
Marc wrote music for the movie, The Princess Bride. The drummer's dad was there, so he was pumped, mr knofler let him go off, even if they played a tad faster than usual.
Actually during this tour (a masterpiece tour) the band members were:
Mark Knopfler - lead vocals, guitar
John Illsley - bass, background vocals
Hal Lindes - guitar, background vocals
Alan Clark - keyboards and piano
Tommy Mandel - keyboards
Terry Williams - drums (a wonderful and insane drummer LoL)
not on stage during this song:
Mel Collins - sax
Joop de Korte - percussions
Absolute pleasure watching you listening to one of the greatest bands ever. Thank you kind sir much love from bonnie Scotland 🏴
Not pick withers on drums in this one. it's Terry Williams. In my mind one of the best drum Performances ever. 🤘
Yes, I said at the end that it was Terry on drums 🥁 and apparently his dad was watching him for the first time so he was going crazy 🤘
I hope you don't have problems with this video due to not pausing it. Please be careful there. Loved your reaction.
New subscriber, loved this reaction. No distortion on that lead. Finger plucking. Terry Williams doing his Animal impression on drums, amazing. I'd love you to see and react to Telegraph Road from the same concert. Probably the most complete live performance ever.
Mark Knopfler and Lindsay Buckingham have to be the best 2 finger picking guitarists in rock period.
Jeff Beck's not bad!
@gillibrandpa okay, maybe I should have qualified that with alive, as Chet Atkins was pretty good too.
Try Paul Simon if you want more fingers
@alanbennett2140 I do like Paul Simon, but I wouldn't say he was in rock, he is more folk to me and there are some great finger pickers in folk, such as Joan Baez, Richard Thompson, Bert Jansch and Leo Kottke
He wrote this song after going into a club and seeing a band play
Great reaction, Thank you for not pausing.
