I'm 70 yrs old...in all my life, nothing has ever surpassed this master piece.. Sultans of Swing. Love seeing reactions of those who are seeing and hearing this for the first time. Beyond words! Thanks for sharing. My gen, really did have all the best music!!
I could argue being 19 at the time that it was actually my generation, but hey, whoever loves and appreciates Dire Straits is my tribe;) How lucky were we?
I'm also 70 years old - I recall when this song was released in 1978 and thought it was great. Some years ago I discovered this live version; it's definitely one of the best (if not the best) versions I've ever heard of a song. I had to buy the concert DVD - do I wish I'd been attending that show!
Iam 82 and love seeing young folks react to the pure talent from the 70 s. Not yelling and banging on the guitar .the guitar player used 3 finger pickin like his idol Chet Adkins
There were several instances during this performance when Mark was looking at the front of the audience and smiling as if teasing them and thinking, “You ain’t seen nothing yet!” And then he launches into yet another epic guitar riff. No jarring transitions at all; it all flowed together somehow even entering the cooldown to give us a chance to breathe. Bravo!

David Knopfler also radiates - energy, good mood, smile...
david isnt in this performance. he already left the band, the second guitarist is Hal Lindes :) he joined the band 1980 and left in 1984. David is only in the band from 1978 to end 1980. :)
They say that everybody gets their 15 minutes of fame during a lifetime..............This is one of those moments for Dire Straits. Everything clicked at the right moment, making it one of the best live performances ever in rock' n roll history. Long live Dire Straits and Rock 'n Roll
The drummer is an absolute beast, and Mark's phrasing and note choices are just perfection. There are so few guitarists who can do what he's doing, at that level, in a live performance. That's why he is, and will remain one of my personal guitar heroes.
The thing about Mark Knopfler is that he's left-handed but mastered a right-handed guitar to a level most right-handed players could only dream of attaining. True virtuoso.
His dad was in the audience that night seeing him play in the band live for first time. They told him to go off and he absolutely nailed it. If you see the lead singer look over at the bassist and smile he was acknowledging how insane he was being on the set. Very cool
Six musicians my friend. One Lead guitar (Mark Knopfler,)one rhythm guitar( Hal Lindes) I one bass guitar (John Ilsley) one drummer (Terry Williams) TWO keyboard players (Alan Clark and Guy Fletcher)

Dire Straits music amongst others helped me get through the hardest time of my life in 1979 when I spent four and a half months in hospital after a serious road crash.
I was never a huge Pink Floyd fan. But I kept seeing people say that Dave Gilmore is a similar guitarist. So I started listening more to Pink Floyd and I think Dave Gilmore. Is amazing. But, there’s simply no one for me like Mark Knopfler.
My absolute favourite recording of any track ever. I will have this played in full at my funeral as the soundscape to me life - I hope, I won't know! Mark Knopfler will forever be my hero.xx
Sir, I am German, but this band "Dire Straits" is very unique in so many ways. Marc Knopfler wrote songs that were food for thought. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
If you liked this, you MUST listen to "Telegraph Road" from the same Alchemy Live gig. The chemistry between Mark's guitar and Alan's piano is amazing.
Such a great live version! Dire Straits are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Walk Of Life", "Brothers In Arms", "Money For Nothing", "Telegraph Road", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "So Far Away" etc. They don't have a bad song.
I absolutely loved your reaction -- and, yes, this undoubtedly is a masterpiece (just like Pink Floyd's live version of 'Comfortably Numb', in my opinion). 🙂 Just had to think of my late father, who loved classical music all his life, but also blues, soul and the American crooners. I once watched a TV show with him in the early 1980s where Dire Straits performed "Sultans of Swing" -- not this extended version, but still great. It was his first time seeing/hearing them. His jaw dropped and when the last note was played, they had a new fan. Just a quick anecdote to share with you and everyone else. All best from Germany
I remember the first time I heard this, I walked into a friend's house, they were playing this album, and I was trying to pay attention to what we were all talking about, but the music kept grabbing my attention, I've probably heard it ten thousand times since then, but it never gets old.
The year when "Sultans of Swing" was released I had a cassette in my VW bus travelling through Italy. I always had a swarm of Italian fans around me asking "Who is this, who is this?......"
This is my favorite song from Dire Straits. I love Mark's guitar playing. especially in Sultan's of Swing. He is a master guitarist and musician. I am so glad you got to hear this. No one else has ever sounded like Dire Straits. Great reaction as usual.
Incredible band and of course led by the one of a kind, Mark Knopfler. The man is a virtuoso. Remarkable songwriter, guitarist and performer. You said it right... A masterpiece. Great reaction.
I've been a fan of Dire Straights since the start, they have so much talent and made wonderful music. This performance was magic. I was delighted to get to see them live in concert once way back when.
So glad I saw them live in the 80's. It was a magnificent concert. Loved the show. Best lead guitarist ever, so lyrical. Just beautiful playing by a left-hand player playing a right-hand guitar and using his fingers not a guitar pick. Nothing short of fantastic, superb, sublime. One of the world's greatest ever musicians & bands DIRE STRAITS just showed us how it is done. Virtuoso lead guitarist Mark with equally brilliant musicians so talented xoxo
I feel the absolute genius of this live extended version is EVERY riff and excursion on MK's guitar is based entirely on the chord structure, progression and melody of the song. He never departs to go off-piste in showing his finger picking range: he blows it out of the water constraining himself such that every solo phrase is a complex yet melodic echo of the song. It's why it has zero dissonance. Additionally, his off the cuff lyrical riffs make this a unique moment in their canon. Better late than never to this GOAT version enhanced by their first gig with a new drummer, Terry Williams, who added a new dimension to this live performance (helped his parents were in the crowd") I've been lucky to have been a follower of DS and MK since Dire Straits' first hit (this one as I was 18 and at sea for the first time when i got a letter screaming at me to find this single and buy it) to his current solo career... unparalleled breadth and guitar and lyrical virtuosity ...
As an U.S.A.F. veteran of 20 years i always loved their " Brothers in Arms" but Home Free did a cover of it that is so good. I know it was written for the British but still love it.
I don't think Mark wrote it specifically for the Brits, although it was primarily for the Falklands vets. It's a song that all of us that have served can identify with, no matter where we are from.
I have a hard time believing people have not heard this song at this point. It is one of the best rock songs of all time period. The solos are amazing, the entire band is on point. It is a masterpiece.
Even You have not seen every musical piece!!! Why is it difficult fir you to understand that someone else has not seen every performance ever done? Maybe you did not mean your words... They have different meanings to others. Kinda selfish to say ❤😮
@@Steve-gx9ot It gets played a lot in bars and restaurants that’s why i say it’s hard to believe people have not heard it. Maybe they didnt pay full attention to it but most likely have heard it as background music at least.
I have to say it was one of life's great music experiences to be in the crowd watching Dire Straits play this and all their other hits live. This song was my introduction to them when it was released when I was just a tacker at school
I can remember the first time I heard this....I was sitting in my Dads Vauxhall Viva outside our local village shop. I had the radio on....this came on and I was instantly blown away!! I'm 68 now and still does it for me. Thanks.
This is the song that landed a recording contract, it's also the title of the first studio album. The original recording is around five minutes long, this live version is around ten minutes. It's thrilling to see a fantastic group just get up and play for fun and this is probably the best version. Thank you for the reaction.
I agree with you - but I have to correct you, the title of their debut album was “Dire Staits”. Or self-titled, or no title, whichever way you look at it…
Glad you enjoyed it. I personally think this is the best live performance of a song by any artist/band period! To be honest any of the Alchemy Live songs are worth a watch but away from that Brothers in Arms live at The Nelson Mandela 70th birthday concert at Wembley is magical
Back when I was 12 and my brother was 15 all heard blasting from his room was Dire straits I no most songs word for word only now at 43 I'm thankful this music was in my home my brother now 47 has seen him a few times he still just as outstanding ❤
This performance was from their Alchemy Live DVD, recorded in 1983. Sultans was their first big hit, too, from 1978, I think. The whole Alchemy live performance is outstanding, by the way. I'd highly recommend Telegraph Road.
Interesting that about at 13:08 Mark is looking around at the other bandmates to see if they are having as much fun as he is. As you mentioned, the chemistry within this group is palpable, and adds to the fun and exuberance of this performance. So grateful to have been a teenager during this timeframe.
I think he was recognising Terry's genius in lifting the tempo to that speed..but yes, these guys were rocking out and unbelievably this live version is not even rated with rolling Stone.
He is looking at Terry the drummer, the basist is also looking back at Terry🙂 Ive read that Terrys father is in the audience, and its the first time he sees his son play live❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Mark is also cueing the others. The transitions between segments (melody - solo, fast - slow, fortissimo - dulce, slow - fast) have quite obviously been rehearsed, and I'm not saying that's bad, I'm saying they could pull this off so beautifully live because they had explored and practiced every idea so much that a nod and a grin was all it took to signal the next part.
🎶K so now🎸 "Telegraph Road" 🎸same venue later in the show where their jackets come off. Mark changes his guitar choice to a resonator guitar that I just love. Thank you for reacting to this song!
This is widely considered one of the best live performances in rock. Mark is truly a gifted guitarist; one of the best in the world. Terry Williams was absolutely on fire on drums. Terry is now 76 and retired in Wales.
An absolutely masterful performance of the light and shade of true rock music. You could see the audience drawn into this performance, and I’m sure there were tears of delight in the eyes of those lucky enough to be in that crowd. We may never again see such a magnificent stage performance from a rock band! Yes, we may never see anything like this again in our lifetime!
Gotta show some love for the drummer too. That guy is incredible! Dropping fills into the basic beat with what seems like little effort. But the dudes gotta be busting his azz to keep it together.
If you haven't already, you should watch them do "Telegraph Road" and "Tunnel of Love" (also from Alchemy)-- two more more stunning performances. In fact, every song on Alchemy can stand on its own. Enjoy!! 💚💙💜
That drummer must've been in really good shape then, He's full on the whole time. That's very physical to keep it that steady from beginning, middle and end after such spending of energy.
My first time hearing "Sultans of Swing" was in September '78. 'Was traveling to meet up with my next ship which required me to stop at a US Navy HQ at Hyde Park in London (CINCUSNAVEUR for those that know what it means). After getting the information I needed to locate my ship, some other sailors and I decided to walk around London for awhile to take in some of the sights. "Sultans of Swing" was getting a lot of airplay, we heard it about everywhere we walked. Watching the people, especially the young guys in groups out looking for some fun made me think of the lyrics. One of the other sailors I was traveling with said about the same thing at the same time; whoever wrote these lyrics just caught that moment in time in London precisely.
I was at The Outlook club in Doncaster Jan 2nd 1978 to see Talking Heads. The support band were Dire Straits. Mark was stood at the bar next to me he said "lot of punks in here!" I just replied yer no idea who he was! The previous weeks we had watched; Sham69, Siouxsie twice and Generation X. Those were the days!!
When this came out in the late seventies, it was a breath of fresh air after the dark days of disco. It signaled a resurgence of rock creativity when that had been stifled by too tightly managed labels and corporatization of radio. Rock got a new lease on life with things like this, as well as new wave and punk, which carried Rock through the eighties and all the way into the nineties grunge era.

100% agree.
Mark K is still the king of the finger pickers, Terry W puts on the best show of drumming I have ever seen.
I could listen to this performance for the rest of time on repeat and not get bored of it. Something new to listen to on each playing. Amazing.
Can I add a shoutout to the sound engineer who balanced this performance to perfection.
Absofuckinlutely
Everything about s perfection, I'll bet even the roadies set it up "perfectly"!!!
Arguably the best live version of any song ever!
I keep telling folks that! Incredible!
You can tell by the smile on Mark’s and the rest of the bands face, that was an epic performance and they caught lightning in a bottle that night

I would have given an arm or leg for this one
You can feel it when you're playing in a band too. Those are the nights you hoped and strived for.

As an American, there certainly is something about British rock bands. Something grand.
I have pondered this for decades. I attribute that undeniable truth to the British people having "a lot" of German DNA...but not too much! They have the innate ability to understand mechanical/musical perfection...while retaining the creativity of all the other peoples who conquered the island beforehand and since. Maybe that's pure hogwash, but it's how I personally reconcile the fact that statistically speaking, "too much" good "stuff" has come out of that relatively tiny and resource barren island. I mean, love it or hate it, the United States is probably the greatest "thing" man has ever invented, and that was essentially birthed by a bunch of British "Mental Rockstars" of that day. Oh, and Knofler is a German name, so that further supports my loony theory lol.
Not sure why UA-cam ate my comment, but it's simple really...the British are German to a large degree, but not enough to stifle their ancient creativity. So they are like the perfect hybrid of precision and creativity and it manifested in music...particularly rock music. Knopfler is a German name, too, so it all makes sense.
Dire Straits music amongst others helped me get through the hardest time of my life in 1979 when I spent four and a half months in hospital after a serious road crash.
Being a Pink Floyd fan all of my life, I still have to say, "That was by far the best life performance I ever saw"
Much of what the Beatles Stones and others are at least as good if not better

He is looking at Terry the drummer, the basist is also looking back at Terry🙂
Ive read that Terrys father is in the audience, and its the first time he sees his son play live❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I heard that too, it's just an amazing performance on so many levels.
Sultans of Swing was released in 1978.
I remember where I was when I first heard it and was totally mesmerised.
Still mesmerised by their sound.
I remember this coming out, in about 1979. I was in the sixth form at school, and being knocked out by it.. It has been a lifelong favourite.
Masterpiece!!!
Love Mark’s smiles.

🎶K so now🎸 "Telegraph Road" 🎸same venue later in the show where their jackets come off. Mark changes his guitar choice to a resonator guitar that I just love. Thank you for reacting to this song!
Best live performance ever. 😊😊😊 So glad I saw them live in the 80s.
I'm from the UK and can't believe you haven't heard this before.
I get a tingle down my spine when I hear this every time
This is widely considered one of the best live performances in rock.
"Make that guitar cry" he said and believe me he certainly did!
Drummers Dad was in the audience, seeing him play for the 1st time.
A masterpiece played by proper musicians no auto tune try telegraph road same concert that's epic
Yep!!
This is a Good One no doubt!!
It never gets old.
Agree that the British rock bands are top notch. Dire Straits are pure fire!
One of the all-time best live performances EVER.
Top ten rock performance of all time
I was at The Outlook club in Doncaster Jan 2nd 1978 to see Talking Heads. The support band were Dire Straits. Mark was stood at the bar next to me he said "lot of punks in here!" I just replied yer no idea who he was! The previous weeks we had watched; Sham69, Siouxsie twice and Generation X. Those were the days!!
My husband and I saw them in concert in Kansas City long ago and absolutely loved it! Enjoyed your reaction!
'Tunnel of Love' 1985 Wembley is a great live performance to check out as well
This Wembley Arena version is on another level 16 mins of magic!
This performance comes at you in waves.
Great watching with you. I love Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler is such a force on stage. He enjoys playing and the whole band is energized.
It's interesting to see a generation realize what we already knew 45 years ago that Knopfler was simply the best ever!
Dude is freaking amazing!
Really enjoy your reactions! This is the music of my youth so its nice to see new ears enjoy it! Keep it up!
I love Mark’s vocals. It’s like he effortlessly drops the lines. So cool.
to cut that last solo is a crime
