Mark Knopfler is criminally underrated. A number of years ago, Rolling Stone Mag did a "Top 100 Guitarists of All Time". Mark Knopfler only played 44th.
I couldn't believe he only made top 50. No way.

    • @alphaomega7191

Those lists are always just opinion based and you get some weird ones - Dick Dale is only 74, Kurt Cobain is at 73 but technically he isn't that great - fine songwriter and a ton of charisma but as a guitarist he isn't close to top 100, John Lennon is at 55 but famously when you isolate the Beatles it's clear that John was a great singer and only a serviceable guitarist and yet George Harrison doesn't get in - no George Young, No Malcolm Young, Noi Harry Vanda, No Tommy Emmanual, No Keith Richards, No Don Felder - I mean NO DON FELDER .... surely for Hotel California alone Felder gets in. There are so many others. They got good people to vote though so I cant complain too much but the list definitely leans a bit heavily towards lead-singer guitarists probably because they are easier to remember.

As a drummer I have a lot of respect for these guys. The drummer is phenomenal, and you can see every band member is just really in the fun "jam zone", when you're so engrossed in the music it feels amazing, things are clicking exactly as they should, and you get into it so much it feels like you're on autopilot. Mark's guitar playing is without a pick, what my guitar buds call finger-picking. His playing abilitity is off the charts, and reminds me of the old banjo duels with Roy Clark. Veteran rockers, worthy of much respect!

What people don't realise is that Mark is left handed but plays right handed. Think there are a couple of videos of him actually playing left handed.
The rhythm guitarist is Mark's brother.
Rumour has it that the drummer had to go and get his arms reattached when he came off stage.
An amazing performance by all. A masterclass for for people starting out in the music industry.

Mark Knopfler is one of the most prolific songwriters alive today. He's done film and TV soundtracks, big stadium shows, and once Dire Straits wound up, he went on to a massively successful solo career. He's such a great story teller with his songs, this one is about a real experience of walking into a pub in London and seeing a band in the corner trying to make a living from performing a few songs. Telegraph Road live is another good one, or Tunnel of Love.

You really should listen to "Friday On My Mind" by the Easybeats - Guitar George & Harry's names were inspired by Georige Young and Harry Vanda the guitarists from that band and they went on to produce music including the first 5 albums for George's younger brothers Angus & Malcolm whose band did pretty well (AC/DC). Friday On My Mind's guitar riffs sound simple but they are actually insanely hard progressions - Knopfler appreciated how good those guys were.

Sultans of Swing was their first hit.
Mark told Brian Johnson from AC DC the story behind the song. They are noth Geordies from Newcastle upon Tyne in the North East of England.
The band were living in London and went into a bar late one evening. A band were playing to a handful of customers. who weren't that interested.
The barman rang the time bell to signal last chance berore the bar stopped serving drinks.
The band played one last song and announced to the audience.
Thanks for listening. Good night we are The Sultans of Swing. As Mark said they weren't the sultans of anything just a band starting out. And that have him the idea for the song.
A music historian analysed the lyrics and thinks he identified the bar.
He knew where the band lived.
    The Lyrics go
You get a shiver in the dark
It's raining in the park but meantime
South of the river you stop and hold everything.
You srep inside and don't see many faces.
A band is playing dixie double four time.
Greenwich is an area in London south of the River Thames associated with sailing and TIME Greenwich Meantime used for navigating at sea originated there.
Looking for a bar near a park in Greenwich the historian identified 2 possible bars.
    A shiver in the dark
    It's raining in the park
Walking home in the rain in the dark they spot a bar and decide to have a beer!

    Two stunned faces!
I saw Mark Knopfler twice in 2019. Like many of us he's put on some weight and lost some hair, but Mark's hands are still mesmerizing. The only sad part of those concerts is that he didn't play this song.
I can watch this concert every day and never get bored.

      • Why Aye Man
      • Corned Beef City
      • Sailing to Philadelphia
      • Once Upon a Time in the West
      • Romeo and Juliet
      • My Bacon Roll

      • On Every Street
      • Speedway at Nazareth
      • Money for Nothing
      • Brothers in Arms
      • Going Home
I love Your Latest Trick and Brothers In Arms, of course, so it was great to hear those. A couple of songs from the most recent album - not the best ones, in my opinion.
Here's hoping for a new tour, with Sultans, Tunnel of Love and Telegraph Road on the setlist.

All the great guitar players always seem to have some "Hook" sound that is somehow all their own. When ever you hear their sound on an indiscreet source you know exactly who it is. Mark Knopfler did something that went against UN-spoken, UN-writen Rules and long held Philosophies that was Brilliant, and one of those moments where you slap your own head for not thinking of this, he took ordinary Banjo Picks and used them with his Guitar, and practiced till he got Really Good.

There are ways of picking on guitar strings. You can use a plectrum, usually used for rhythm guitar. You can grow the nails on your picking hand and file them to shape. You can wear individual finger picks. Normally for acoustic guitar you can use just your fingers.

So you've noticed that all guitars have got a different job one is not a guitar it's a base it's actually closer to the percussion area(drums etc) that is why it's only got 4 thick cords...the other guitar it's just a rhythm guitar that provides just that...and Mark just does the magic called Lead guitar.

Hal Lindes (rhythm guitar) still learning to keep up with Mark. And Mark Knopfler - one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Best live performance ever by a rock band. NOBODY wanted it to end.

Re the keyboardist, Born 5th March 1952 (age 70)
County Durham, England, as a six-year-old child, Alan Clark received piano lessons. From the age of nine years he taught himself. At the age of 13 and while still a pupil at Chester-le-Street Grammar School, he began to play Hammond organ in working men's clubs in the northeast of England, and thereafter forged a successful career in music which included playing with a reformed Geordie which featured Brian Johnson (who would later join AC/DC), playing and recording with a duo called Splinter who were signed to George Harrison's Dark Horse label, playing and recording with Gallagher & Lyle, and playing on a tour of major UK festivals with Lindisfarne.
Throughout his time with Dire Straits, he was also Tina Turner's musical director and played on/arranged her hit "Private Dancer", toured and recorded with Eric Clapton (Journeyman) as well as playing in the "Orchestra Nights" performances with the National Philharmonic Orchestra and Michael Kamen during Clapton's 24 Nights concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in 1990 and 1991. He co-wrote with Clapton the score for the movie Communion. Wikipedia.
