Procol Harum released this rock classic back in 1967. That they could reimagine it some 50 years later with a symphonic arrangement and have it hit like it does is truly incredible. Definitely good stuff.
Released in 1967 when Gary Brooker was 22 years old. He had a good voice then. 39 years later Gary now had a great voice in 2006. This masterpiece will continue to live for many years to come. Thank you Gary, and rest in peace.
The studio version of this song in 1967 was great but this live version is stupendous as it has more depth because of the orchestra and choir. Gary Brooker's voice aged liked a fine wine. R.I.P. Gary.
This song is older than me by almost a year - May, 1967. I have been hearing this song my whole life and it still brings tears to my eyes. This is an amazing version.
This was based on Bach's Air on G String. It came out in 1967 in the Summer of Love during the Vietnam War. Such beauty during a time of unrest. The addition of the orchestra and choir brings the original to a point of completion aalmost 50 years later. RIP Gary. Well done.
You don't get any music like this anymore because our generation are either dead or dying, sadly Gary Brooker died in 2022, RIP Gary, Your music will always live on.
I truly love your reactions. When I see your appreciative joy of this song it reminds me of myself on first hearing this amazing song so many years ago. Thank you. Another transcendent song in my opinion is the Hotel California by the Eagles. Music at a whole different level. Give it a shoot you won't be disappointed.
Anyone been to a Procol Harum concert? No cheap umism, no choreography and no flying saucers. Just five guys with their instruments, and yet most of those concerts were magical. And yet, aside from “A Whiter Shade...” this band has created many other equally outstanding works.
I grew up with the 70's & 80's music, which was incredible, but I've watched this performance probably 100 times and have to say it's probably the best live performance I have seen. Masterfull, timeless, epic performance. Loved your reaction!
I was stationed in Germany 1967-68 and a few of us went to a local club one night that had a live band playing. They played this song which I had never heard before and it was amazing. Between Gary Brooker's voice and that organ loved the song. Soon after we began hearing it on the radio and realized that was Procol Harum that we saw. A lot of British bands toured clubs in Europe on their way up.
All us old geezers know this is the definition of music! What we're trying to figure out is what to call the stuff they make today, which is most definitively not music... The de-evolution of music over the past few decades has been astounding to witness.
Great post! You’ve entered a very deep rabbit hole of the absolute best music ever recorded. You’ve got about 50 years worth of music to catch up on so…….welcome and enjoy the ride!
There was some beautiful music recorded in the 60s and 70s. I'm so glad to see that you are interested in expanding your musical horizon. R.I P. Gary Brooker.
Great reaction as per usual. Glad enjoyed this classic. As a teen (late 80s) I used to play this on the jukebox in the local pub The Steer. I still remember it was 172 on the jukebox. All the best and keep doing these wonderful old school classics.
This was not the first outing with a Symphony Orchestra for Procol Harum, in 1971 they recorded "Procol Harum Live In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra".
@@alejandromunoz7334 No, it is not, unfortunately. This is much, much later. And miles away. Canada Denmark. I have listend to and bought all albums since the beginning.
There are a few more pieces from the "Danish National Symphony Orchestra" that are very noteworthy: For example - "The Good The Bad and The Ugly" composed by Ennio Morricone or the title song from HIGHLANDER "WhO Wants To Live Forever" or "The Mandalorian" or "HALO"... All well worth seeing and hearing - very emotional, rousing and professionally performed. Have fun listening and watching...!
But this isn't the DNSO. This is Det Kongelige Kapel (Royal Danish Orchestra). They are the ones playing in the Copenhagen Opera House, while DNSO is the orchestra of DR - our first national radio- and TV station, which is a public station. The Royal Orchestra playing here, is the oldest symphony orchestra in the world, formed in 1448, while the DNSO was formed in 1925, when DR was also formed. So, while this was recorded by DR television, it was not their orchestra playing here.
Worth a mention is that the whole soundtrack to Highlander was written by "Queen" - and "Who wants to live forever" is written by the guitarist Brian May.
Gary's voice was his and the band's signature and it never aged. Every time Procol Harum is mentioned they are immediately connected with 'A whiter shade of pale'. Yet, in my opinion, 'A salty dog', 'Homburg' , 'Conquistador' and 'Grand Hotel' are of equal quality.
This is the lead singer grom the Moody Blues singing his song with a Orchestra backing him. Incredible song ive heard hundreds of times as I grew up listening to the 70's and ip as I'm 61 and luv to see that this music will live on with all of this generation. Warms my heart. Luv your reactions. ❤
I remember as a young boy visiting my grandparents in Birmingham in the late 60s, this always seemed to be playing and has since become my all time favourite track, even now it's the only Procul Harum track I really know but its so emotive, wonderful story telling. as far as music I believe we still have music like this you just gotta look, check out Hungerstrike by Temple of the Dog, for fun, Chris Cornell doing Billie Jean or Led Zeppelin's Thank You.
You hit the nail right on the head, what's missing in the popular music today is the musicality. You can still find a bit of it if you really look but it's not popular with most younger folks and you won't really hear it on the radio anymore. Keep diving into this "oldies" music; you'll continue to be amazed!
Another great reaction, Rere. Amazingly, this song dropped in 1967 when the group was so much younger. You definitely need to give that version a listen. You won't hear an orchestra or a choir, but you will hear some amazing music that fit right into that insane British musical culture that was sweeping the globe. 😊
I was 19 years old,in 1967 when this song came out, Gary Brooker is the singer,we lost Gary two years ago ,He was a genius,,at music, and a man of GOD! May he rest in peace, we love you Gary!
These guys, Procal Harem, were out at the same time as the Mooty Blues, who you reacted to yesterday. Both were in the rock era, both did some rock songs. And yet you can see here that they could integrate that kind of music, into full-fledged orchestrations. Anyway, I know how much you enjoyed the Moody Blues. I just wanted to point out that these guys were similar in that they did music different than the other standard Rock groups.
current music like this: The Warning, Black Holes live and Breathe live from Pepsi Center CDMX. In which 22 year old Paulina Villarreal gives a roller-coaster emotional performance for the ages. Brilliantly singing at the piano and joined by strings... (one caution, the lyrics of both songs are dark, but that's why she's emotional) Oh and your Home Alone faces during the reaction were super cute.
There is a band called Yes with a song called Roundabout. Rick Wakeman on keyboards and Steve Howe on guitar are classically trained. Chris Squire on base was in a serious choir. Bill Bruford on drums, who went on to King Crimson. Vocalist Jon Anderson is well, not of this world. Crazy vocals and very complex music but very accessible. Giants at the beginning of Progressive Rock
Remember, Gary Booker was a young man when he first sang this song, back in 1967. All these years later (if I remember right, the video is from around 2012), he could *still* sing it like he does here!
I saw them sing this live in 1972 when I lived in Honolulu, Hawaii. The singer is gone now but this video will still be played and admired for generations. I really enjoyed seeing your reaction. Best wishes to you RND.
Its so refreshing to see a person 1/3 my age love the same music that we grew up with. You get it. Maybe you are an old soul?? Either way, yes, I agree that this IS MUSIC!!!!!
The similarity between the Hammond Organ line of "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and J. S. Bach's Air from his Orchestral Suite No. 3 2. Air, BWV 1068, (the "Air on the G string") This is Progressive rock (shortened as prog rock or simply prog) is a broad genre of rock music that primarily developed in the United Kingdom through the mid- to late 1960s, peaking in the early 1970s. Initially termed "progressive pop", the style was an emergence of psychedelic bands who abandoned standard pop traditions in Favour of instrumentation and compositional techniques more frequently associated with jazz, folk, or classical music. Additional elements contributed to its "progressive" label: lyrics were more poetic, technology was harnessed for new sounds, music approached the condition of "art", and the studio, rather than the stage, became the focus of musical activity, which often involved creating music for listening rather than dancing. I was 13 when this came out.
This single piece of music became the anthem of the sixties..anybody living through that decade will understand the depth of feeling contained in it's meaningful references to popular music's defining era An undisputed masterpiece
You know who would agree with your comment "that's what music is"? Peter Frampton, who when asked what he considered was the perfect song, chose "Whiter Shade of Pale." You are in good company
Orchestras can play other kinds of music than classical - this is a rock ballad - but i know what you mean - strings and winds 😉😉- truly an iconic organ line
This song always takes me back to slow dancing at the high school dances in the gym. Every band that played dances had to add an organ just for this song.
Saw them in '68 and again in the early 90's with both original keyboardists Gary (on vocals here ) and Matthew Fisher. If you liked this try "Nights In White Satin" by the Moody Blues live.
Thx! What a delightful reaction! Seeing a person discover is like a baby’s first laugh! Or like seeing 5:25 a deaf person hear for the first time! Thx Rere! Peace n love!
Procol Harum released this rock classic back in 1967. That they could reimagine it some 50 years later with a symphonic arrangement and have it hit like it does is truly incredible. Definitely good stuff.
Not many songs get better with age. This one has.
The orchestra arrangement is just a few years younger then the song. They have been doing it with orchestra since the early 70s.
@@ChrisEchoes Cool!
Almost 60 years.
“That’s what music is.” ….. Spot on!
Thats what music used to be
Your appreciation for real music is a delight to watch. Keep discovering!
Glad you made it to here young lady.
Gary Brooker never lost that beautiful voice, passing in 2022. Well done Gary, well done.
Loved your reaction. Gary Brooker, 61 years old, immaculate performance. Rest easy Gary. 🥰

John Lennon said that this was the greatest song ever written, and that he wish that he had wrote it.
The studio version of this song in 1967 was great but this live version is stupendous as it has more depth because of the orchestra and choir. Gary Brooker's voice aged liked a fine wine. R.I.P. Gary.

50’s,60’s and 70’s music was the best ever recorded!
you might add the 80's up until 85

Gary Brooker left us in 2022 at 76 years old. A generational talent gone too soon
Tears. Every damn time. Thank you for appreciating this amazing work So happy you loved it!
They originally did this in 1967. Another great song from them on this concert is A Salty Dog.
🇨🇦 And "Conquistador" ! 🇨🇦
I agree they had many great songs but A Salty Dog is one of my favorites.
Your reactions are always so spot on. The late Gary Brooker’s vocals are beautiful as are your eyes.
Anyone been to a Procol Harum concert? No cheap umism, no choreography and no flying saucers. Just five guys with their instruments, and yet most of those concerts were magical. And yet, aside from “A Whiter Shade...” this band has created many other equally outstanding works.
One of the better music experiences to make your heart soar and just moves you off the ground.
That feeling when something beautiful makes you cry...
Great Reaction! This is one of my favorite performances ever…Thanks for playing it 😊
This same Danish Symphony Orchestra does a fabulous versions of the theme song from "The Good The Bad and The Ugly"!
I remember when this came out about 57-58 years ago

One of the best songs ever. ❤❤❤
RIP Gary Brooker. ❤️
I love that Hammond organ… we had one like that. My Mom played.

At this same concert they also sang "Conquistador" another hit for Procol Harum.
An absolutely jaw dropping performance
Thank you so much for doing this reaction!😁
I knew you would enjoy this one!
Yes, the Hammond organ, particularly the B3, was a staple of music of the 60s and 70s
A true classic Gary brooker had a fantastic voice sadly missed
Great post! You’ve entered a very deep rabbit hole of the absolute best music ever recorded. You’ve got about 50 years worth of music to catch up on so…….welcome and enjoy the ride!
Many people like this experience so much, they start to cry for no reason they can articulate. Beautiful song.. 😊
That’s the Danish National Orchestra playing with the Procol Harum band😊
The look on your face says it all!!! Great reaction!! RIP Gary Brooker!!
Finally someone commented on the organ. Thanks.
1967. The Summer of Love over here in California, U.S. What a time to be a teen !!!
The Moody Blues' "Nights In White Satin" are backed by the London Symphony Orchestra.
I grew up with this sort of music. I miss it today ....
I was 19 when this was a big hit in Canada {1967}. This concert decades later SEALS this song as a one of the greats Plus it is on video .

I get the chills and weepy eyed everytime I watch this video.

This whole concert is just amazing. Conquistador is another classic.
A Salty Dog ...
Psychadelic , thats all about , already 200 years ago. Its about how the composer remembered J.S: Bachs Aire over a G string from the top of his head.
Check out A Salty Dog from the same gig in Denmark. Another fantastic performance

"Glimpse of Heaven" by the Strawbs.
