    Scrapers are essential in my workshop. planing work would be incomplete without block planes and scrapers. But I've never used one like this. Hope to try and see the result.

      these are an interesting device, I find them more useful for making sure the final surface is finish ready. Don’t need sand paper when I do a good job with the Cabinet Scraper

    6:35 from where did you get this metal piece that is on the table and preventing the wood from sliding forward ?

      That device is called a retractable bench stop. Lee Valley, and a lot of others, sell them for around $12cdn. This is Lee Valley’s so you can get a clear picture. It is very easy to mount.

      Nope, I do have the largest of hands though, but on the veritas, my knuckles are well clear of the board.

      @@allenwc and with a standard stanley 80 or copies of it does your knuckles touch the board ?
      also how do you keep the cabinet scrapers card flat if you made it a little bit hollow in the middle? (the2 corners protrude more than the middle) i think my card is like that and i need to fix it that is why i am asking

    how do I know how many strokes to do with the file ?
    if i sharpen i knife i feel for a burr and know to move on but with this how do i know that i finished the filing at the 45 degrees?

    • @allenwc
      @allenwc  Рік тому

      Re watch at 2:30.
      The blade in the video is a new blade, it was way out of flat.
      What you want to do is file that 45 degree bevel until it is smooth across the entire card.
      Then make sure the back of the card is smooth as well.
      Then you put on a controlled burr with a burnishing tool.
      With a new card this may take a bit of work, as in the video. But once you have sharpened a card, re-sharpening should take only one or two passes with the file.

      @@allenwc what kind of file is recommended ?
      i am quite confused as i am searching for a file for this and there is no solid info on this do you recommend a single cut file or a double cut file or a Mill File?

    • @allenwc
      @allenwc  Рік тому

      I use a simple mill file. Any good quality file should work just fine.

      This comment properly belongs with the Veritas card scraper sharpening kit review.
      However
      The Veritas sharpening kit works, as demonstrated here.
      BUT
      you can get a much better edge by hand burnishing your card scrapers.
      The sharpening jig in this kit and the file both work very well. If you have never sharpened a card scraper before, this jig is going to help make sure you are 90 degrees and flat. This can be useful for beginners.
      For beginners unfamiliar with the concepts of card scraper sharpening, the burnisher is going to be useful for sure. Allowing one to learn the basic concepts while producing a workable burr.
