    I have a Stanley 80 scraper that I haven’t ever had luck using. I realized tonight that I’ve been using it all wrong. So thanks again James!

    I made a holder for my card scraper to put the bend in it. My poor old 65 year old thumbs got too sore, the holder works great.

      Right on. Veritas makes a holder for them but they're really easy to make. I think I have two videos showing that now. I'll have to go back and look at that

    I couldn't attend the live show. But since the last time I tried to sharpen my scraper, with minimal success, i had picked up a real burnisher from Rockler and by golly I put my scraper in the bench vise just like you did and rock and rolled that edge now it cuts like butter. Finally able to make and roll a useable burr for this important tool!

      A good burnisher is worth its weight in gold.

      @@WoodByWrightHowTo seriously. I found that! Next step is a cabinet scraper for me!

      I found a knife steel at a flea market for $1, since I already have two in the kitchen, the cheap one is going in the wood shop.

    In case anyone reads this later, the best way to prevent glue getting on your tools that I've found is to coat them with paste wax. The glue can't bond with it and any dried glue just pops right off. It also protects against rust better than most anything else.. this trick works with CA and PVA glue.

    This topic is great timing. I finally got the burnishing rod I ordered from you awhile back in a handle and really need to sharpen my cheap card scraper. Thx for the info👍🏼

    Your timing couldn’t have been more perfect, James! I recently came into possession of both a Stanley No. 12 and 80 cabinet scraper. The 80 doesn’t have a scraper, so I think I’ll take your suggestion and cut one out of an old saw blade. I also need a burnishing rod, and will order one asap from your website. Anyway, thanks so much for the helpful info. I feel much more confident because of your instruction.

    I have a couple of solid carbide router bits for inlay stuff....... I use the shaft of one of them to burnish the scraper if I need a burr heheh :P

    Well, James, you almost 'scraped' by in a video without putting yourself in the doghouse.
    Better get Sara a 'card' apologizing for your insinuation that she's a slow woodworker (whether it's true or not).

    anyone ever tried a kitchen knife steel as a burnisher?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  3 роки тому +3

      Yes. I actually show that just before I start the burnishing. It works fine. Pretty much any steel that is harder than the card scraper will work.

    Will an old drill bit on the shank work for a burnisher?

  • @mattg6262
    @mattg6262 3 роки тому +2

    Regarding the heating up. Would it work to douse the scraper in cold water for a few seconds and dry it off real good and keep going? In case someone doesn't have a bunch?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  3 роки тому +1

      You could, but they normally cool off in 30-40 seconds just sitting on the bench. I would be more worried about rust.

      @@WoodByWrightHowTo by the way thank you for responding to these comments. It's one of the coolest things about connecting on UA-cam. I am in the hive mind now btw. I'm now watching your content and Paul S's almost exclusively these days as I'm getting more into traditional and hand tool work..

    The volume on a lot of your videos is too low., makes it hard to concentrate on content.. But always excellent subjects.

      Unfortunately on the lives it's very hard to set the volume as I cannot monitor it live. I'm working on a few settings to try and fix that but it's an ongoing problem.

    Isnt a cabinet scraper supposed to be "bevel down", with the bevel at the back and the burr rolled toward the flat side?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  2 роки тому +1

      yes, but the angle of the bed is forward on a cabinet scraper not backward. So the bevel is toward the surface it rests on.

    • @whittysworkshop982
      @whittysworkshop982 2 роки тому +1

      @@WoodByWrightHowTo I dont think I worded myself correctly....... I think the bevel is supposed to face the back of the tool, opposite to the way its bein pushed (same as a bevel down plane) with the flat side facing forward and the burr rolled towards the flat side. Imagine a traditional bevel down plane just with the iron pitched more forward. The bed that the blade rests on in a cabinet scraper is still behind the blade, its jus angled forward instead of angled back, its clamped from the front to the bed which is behind it, if the bed was in front of it then the blade would flex and vibrate in use, creating chatter :) Any instructions ive seen for scrapers with bevels ( eg. Veritas scraper plane) shows the burr bein pulled to the flat side and the bevel is faced to the back of the tool. Shannon Rogers uses a cabinet scraper this way (without a burr), Paul Sellers faces the bevel rearward (he uses a burr)..... and numerous others. I fear you may be mistaken with this one James :)

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  2 роки тому +1

      correct. that is how I have it in the video. the burr rolls away from the bevel and the bevel is placed up facing the bed it rests on.

    • @whittysworkshop982
      @whittysworkshop982 2 роки тому

      @@WoodByWrightHowTo Watch from 35.40, you point out which side the 45 is on and turn the burr in that direction and check for the burr on that side, and you said that the bevel has to face forward towards the front of the tool when you were settin it into the scraper. You would only place the bevel side forward if the burr was on that side. You did rework the blade after your instruction and had it in and out of the scraper, but you didnt mention any change to your original instructions :)
      Im not the kind to nit-pick at things or point out others mistakes (we all make them) but others are gonna follow these instructions, so my only intent here is to make things clear, I do not wish to embarrass anyone. You are an influential man in the world of hand tools and a lot of people rely on your instructions.... Ive learned from you myself. But either the instructions are wrong here, or there is major confusion in communications :) Please watch the video from around 35.40ish James....... maybe I am confused, it wouldnt be the first time :P
