Hi William! This was really helpful, thank you! What is your preferred angle setting for the burnished? Does it matter which side you point the dial to?

    • @allenwc

I'm currently using 15 degrees, and I'm very happy so far.
The burnished bevel can be set on either side of the card.
With the pointer to the shorter end of the tool, the bevel will be burnished on the side of the card AWAY from you.

Thank you for posting William. This tool seems to take all of the guess work out of the process. Especially when you move the card scraper through the burnisher. You bring up a good point about pressing too hard with the burnishing tool. I've had trouble getting a proper hook with my traditional rod style burnisher. It is probably due to me applying too much pressure.

That is not a very good edge on the scraper. You should be able to get it to cut much better. You should be able to get long very thin shavings that curl up into a tube. For one thing you are not using the burnisher correctly. This is partially Lee Valley’s fault. You have to first set it to 0 degrees and burnish a few times with moderate pressure, this starts to spread the edge of the scraper, then set the angle you want and burnish a few times. ALWAYS using a drop of oil. The directions clearly say this, and it makes a huge difference. Go to Lee Valley and look at the care and use . Using the burnisher directly from the file will work, but the higher the polish the better the scraper will perform, just like with any sharpening.Lee Valley skips this step in their directions for the burnisher, but if you go to their care and use on their scraper page,it gives details and clearly says to stone after filing, but it has to be polished square. And both faces need to be polished at the edge. And probably not on a water stone. It is very easy to damage a water stone if you are not careful. I have owned my variable angle burnisher from long before they started making them out of plastic. Late 80’s early 90’s I think. All the variable angle burnisher does is hold the burnisher at a constant angle. You still have to properly prepare the scraper just like with any other burnisher.

@@allenwc I would read the care and use for the burnisher, and then read the care and use for their hardened scrapers. On their website. They explain it much better than me.

save your money,,,i have tried and tried and this will not put an edge on a scrapper reguardless of what they say on here

The Veritas sharpening kit works, as demonstrated here.
      BUT
you can get a much better edge by hand burnishing your card scrapers.
The sharpening jig in this kit and the file both work very well. If you have never sharpened a card scraper before, this jig is going to help make sure you are 90 degrees and flat. This can be useful for beginners.
For beginners unfamiliar with the concepts of card scraper sharpening, the burnisher is going to be useful for sure. Allowing one to learn the basic concepts while producing a workable burr.

@@allenwcI agree with almost everything you said. I bought mine 20 or 30 years ago when I bought my first card scraper. And they do work well and help you get the basic understanding of how “ rolling a burr” works. Where I would disagree is the jointer is not a sharpening jig. It is only a way to get the edge flat and square. And it works well for that, but the scraper still needs to be polished on stones.

There is a small chance yours is defective. But more likely you are not using it correctly. This is partially Lee Valley’s fault. Their directions for the burnisher are incomplete, they tell you to use it after filing.
But if you go to care and use of their scrapers you will see that you need to stone the scraper ( basically polishing it) before using the burnisher. Make sure you burnish at zero degrees a couple of times before burnishing at the desired angle. Another big mistake is burnishing too much and not using oil. There is nothing really great or amazing about the burnisher. The only thing it does is holds the carbide rod at a consistent angle. ( which isn’t really that hard to do with a standard burnisher) but it does work.

why would you think it a joke? It is an honest review of the tool following the instructions that came with it.
