I was once having a week-long 'Introduction to the workplace' (I think that's how you'd translate it) in 8th grade and the place only played about a 10-track playlist of 80's pop. Nothing else. Thankfully I was only there for a week but I can only imagine what it's like for the long-time employees there, hearing the same few pop songs for years...

I work in the kitchen for this place called the Old Spaghetti Factory. The people who eat there are the family types who go to church on sundays, old people, and people who wanna go eat fancy but can't afford it.
Doesn't sound very metal at all.
But the thing is, in the back, you can bring your own speaker if you'd like and play your own music, and everyone in the kitchen listens to heavy metal.

I really agree with you I think hair is a personal thing, it is something that goes everywhere with you so they shouldnt make you cut it
I think it is unfair to guys how girls can have their hair as long as they want and guys have to cut it
also I think it is stupid how they care more about appearance rather than skills, I would rather have a blue haired guy who is intelligent and who has the skills for the job rather than a dumbass dressing formal and who has no skills

I cant call myself a metalhead, even tho i spend a huge amount of time listen to metal bands (obviusly, it was the most popular metal bands arround the 80s and 90s). But one thing i always gonna love from metalheads is that until this day, they keep listening to ALUMBS, complete albums, not just a bunch of random songs of diferent albums, nowadays people usually get their iPods only with SONGS of various artist/albums. And IMO, the experience of listen an entire album its way too much better. My uncle (who is actually one of my metal mentors) has his iPod filled with ALBUMS and we used to spend ours listening and comenting about bands, years, guitarrist, etc. Good memories. And one of the things that i love the most on your vlogs is the album recomendations, i actually have been listening those albums.
Sorry bad english, not my native language. Cheers!

EDIT. It’s been two months and thanks to Metallica’s early albums and Behemoth’s The Satanist and Firelink’s The Inveterate Fire I’ve finally gotten into listening to full albums

I completely understand where you're coming from. I work as a pharmacy technician at a hospital. When I went on my interview, I took out my nose rings and my 12 year piercings and wore my skirt suit. Once I got my tattoo on my arm, I have to keep it covered up. Even when I go to work, I don't wear nearly as much makeup as I do like on my days off and when I go to shows. I remember the first time I played my music when I was working, my coworkers just said, "You don't seem like the type of person who would listen to metal."

  • @jennygauge
    @jennygauge 7 років тому +13

Totally get it. I've taken out piercings or covered my tattoos for the sake of getting through an interview before. Anyone with 'mods' or the likes thereof will understand the looks we get and the thoughts others have on us, especially when it comes to what potential bosses may think of us. It's bulshit but necessary if I want to maintain that proverbial 'phat cash' flow. Usually once I'm hired and prove myself to be a legit and hard worker, I can start showing my 'mods' and whatnot bit by bit and no one says a word.

Great video, and great outlook. The best job out there for a metalhead is the one that pays the bills. If you support your own family, you understand this even more.
I'm a lifelong metalhead, and long ago I've conceded the fact that most people just don't like metal or whatever comes with it. There's nothing wrong with that. There's plenty out there that we don't like.
You're right to say that people will draw conclusions about you based on your appearance. EVERYONE DOES IT. It doesn't even have to be in a negative way; for example, if you see a man wearing the brown UPS uniform, it's safe to say he's an employee of UPS. This is one of the reasons why professional appearances are important. You, as an employee, represent the company you work for, not the other way around.
Also as far as judging based on appearances, how many fellow metalheads in here scoffed at the sight of scene-kids or sagging pants? Don't lie lol.
You can hold a job and hold your principles. Principles shouldn't be about your clothes, they should be about your ideas, morals, outlook, etc. Nobody can take that from you, no matter where you work. Hell, I served in the US Army for 5 years. The military is the one organization where appearance standards are probably higher than any other job out there, but if they can't take your personal morals from you, then Walmart sure as hell ain't gonna.
You know what's metal? Doing whatever it takes to handle your shit. The world doesn't owe you anything, so if you want it, go get it. Sometimes you gotta do shit you don't like. Metal anthems are songs about strength and survival, not about how they got their asses kicked. That's for the mallcore crowd.

For the first professional job I got after Uni, I turned up for the interview in knee-high leather boots, a black leather skirt, black shirt and a long black trench coat. I got that job because of my personality and I knew how to talk the shit in that field. Since it wasn't a job where you need to deal with customers I got to wear band T-shirts and jeans everyday. I'm a girl so the hair wasn't an issue, but it wouldn't have been anyway. After working there for awhile other people with facial piercings and bright coloured whacky hair styles were hired as well, so that was cool too cause they also likes some similar bands and they were cool to look at. It's definitely easier to look metal/different the more qualifications the job requires, compared to retail positions and the like.
Another little story... Out of all my metal friends that were trying to get a first job straight out of high school, only one cut his hair. The rest got jobs as waiters or in retail and it turned out the only job he could get with the big chop off was pushing trolleys (shopping carts) at the supermarket. For that job they really don't care what you look like, and most of the other employees in that particular position suffer from mental disabilities. I'm not using that as an insult, they literally have Down's syndrome and other mental difficulties. That certainly taught us all a lesson in being who you want to be. I do understand your general point though.

I’ve been watching your videos off and on for the past year. I love Metal, the music, and the incredible family and culture it encompasses. We truly are family. I Finally subscribed! 😂 As for Metal Jobs I like to think I have made a living in some pretty insane occupations. I was a Solider in America’s 1st Infantry Division and served in Units that stormed the beaches of Normandy in WWII and was a member of the prestigious unit that won many great battle of WWII. I went on to work on giant oil rigs in Wyoming and the Dakotas. Miserable hate work. Now I’m a weapons and artillery technician, something that would make Sabaton shit their pants. 😂 I rock Metal Merch from my favorite bands almost daily. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼

Well it all depends on the person, if your only passion is metal so you should find a find with almost no technical requirements, so as you said any job is ok, but I do think that there're out there some "normal" jobs that are more "Metalhead friendly", for example, I'm Tech Support and I only do support for the company personnel so I can wear any shirt I want (maybe no a Cannibal Corpse one but hey... there is no need to show butchery in a work place), and the most important thing is that almost any office/tech job there is people tend to be more open minded, a bit more intelligent so I find a LOT of people that are metalheads or metal sympathizers, and also I can work with headphones and listen to music all day, and that's important because, for example here in Argentina, some low-rated jobs like stocker, worker, jobs that you're out of public sight so they tend to listen to very loud awful music and even do some team-work, so you have to listen to awful music all day and you're unable to wear headphones so that are not very good jobs for metalheads I guess, so my recomendation, well, try to have hobby outside metal that can give you a nice and comfy position to be confortable and happy, because you're going to be a nice bounch of hours there and with that people.
There is also some works that're definitelly "METAL JOBS" like in mayus and all... it is of course based on "Metalhead Stereotypes", for example... Blacksmith, Blacksmith is SUUUUPER Heavy Metal!! but you also need to have the passion to try this because there is not so many blacksmiths nowadays. Another good one in the same line but not so heavy is being a Carpenter, you "create stuff with your own hands" It's like the prime premise.
Then there is the highly-qualify jobs the professional jobs, the ones where you need to end university with honours, and for me any kind of profession where you can work from home is good for a metalhead, for example, Civil engineer, Arquitect, etc, are good ones since you tend to work at home, metal music might even give you inspiration and there are a lot of metal songs to burst you head for works like that.
Then if you dont need a lot of money to live you can be a leather artisan, one of my leather cuff are made by a metalhead that works 6 months in Argentina and 6 months in Spain so, he does what he wants, dress as he wants, and have enough to live and travel.
The last posibility is if you have a lot of money to invest in something, well you can do whatever you fucking want but the point is to work in a project that is a bit heavy metal, like, for example, making a brewery.

Me and my boyfriend are metalheads and we both work in IT - he's a programmer and I'm a networking engineer. Neither of our managers care as to what we wear - of course we don't go to the extremes (band t-shirts, some basic necklaces here and there, but nothing too extreme). My boyfriend is with an extremely long hair and goatee and I myself went through the entire rainbow of hair colours (normal and abnormal) and in neither of our workplaces it was ever a problem :) And funny enough, lots of metallheads go to the IT field :)

This is very useful for me, since I'm a young metalhead that finds himself drifting inevitably into adulthood and truth be told, sooner or later I'll have to earn my bread with the sweat of my brow whether I like it or not. However, I already had an option lined up. Four letters. Y, M, C, A.
Nah, I'm just messing with you. Those four letters are A, R, M, Y. Army. I intend to join the army as soon as I turn 18. I know it's gonna be the toughest experience of my life, but as I sometimes say, the hammer can shatter glass, but it can also forge steel.
May the Aesir and the Vanir bless you, Blackmetal Werewolf, and may the Norns align your fate with happiness, health, and wealth.

I feel that here where I live (Finland), it's becoming looser in many fields, I'm a female, so no trouble with hair length but I remember piercings, especially facial ones, being problematic; now it's much more accepted (sure there are still places when it's not accepted at all, though sometimes it's for a legit reason (f.e. being a cook you can't wear any jewelry because of hygiene and possibility ending in the customer's food) but not always) unless you look somehow really disturbing or so.
My bf has long hair and is working at school (IT support, so no teacher or so) and no problems.
If I were male, I would def have long hair and would have a really hard time to give it up. As a female, I've preferred long hair on guys since age 10, long before I even knew metal existed. :D And it's still the same, I found short hair unattractive on both males and females, with pretty rare exceptions to this (less than 5 % :D).
And the longer the hair, the better. :D Shoulder length is too short. :D
Just in general, I think it's stupid that "men should have short hair just because men are supposed to have short hair". I hope it changes and won't be seen as problematic, just like women can have short hair now while 150 years ago it was unacceptable.

Thought I'd chime in here. If you live in the U.S. and are a metalhead looking for a job, especially if you have a trade skill such as mechanic, sheet metal worker, welder, etc, look into applying for any civiian federal government jobs in your area that are along those lines. I work in a machine shop, working on engine parts for fighter jets. As a civil service worker, the government doesn't care about the length of my hair (it's pretty long) as long as I can get the job done. I'm not IN the military, just working FOR the military, so no haircut regulations. We have lots of biker types working where I work, with long hair, long beards, etc. Some of them even wind up in management positions over time. One lady who used to work in my shop advanced to a very high management position in our facility, and when I saw her a couple of weeks ago, she had purple hair. We also have a guy in our building, an engine mechanic, I believe, who wears metal band shirts almost every day. No one says a word about it. Our command is even running an ad now looking for new employees, and in the ad, there is a huge bearded guy who could pass for a Viking, and a woman with tattoos standing in front of a fighter jet holding a wrench. Might be worth checking into. I'd recommend still dressing sort of "mainstream" for your initial interview, but once you start working, no one will care about your style of dress. As an added bonus, you can build up vacation days pretty quickly, which has allowed me to take time off to travel for gigs with bands I've been in, and to travel to concerts. The website to see what's available in your area is www.usajobs.gov.

I'm a welder in a metal fabrication shop. They aren't too strict on style of dress, so long as it doesn't pose a safety risk. Long pants and steel toed boots are a must. Long hair tied back and no loose/baggy clothing. Jewelry isn't prohibited, but it's suggested necklaces be tucked into the shirt. Most people don't wear their wedding rings. you could loose a finger in machinery!
Other than that, no problems. :-)

The rules of having our hair tied back, clean nails, and uniform (scubs) kind of unifies all the workers and there are several roles within the healthcare field. I work in front of customers, as a type of cashier that handles cashing checks/sending money/paying bills. I am always wearing my two rings I choose and some leather wrist/arm bands, no spikes, along with my work's full dress code. My work has never given me crap either. Hell my bosses say they like my outfits when they see me off work and just the other day on Halloween when I did this full on gothic/metal attire. I've come to realize I do my job, and several others, well enough they don't care unless a customer actually complains; which has yet to happen with my 4 years working there. I guess they saw something in me, because I didn't realize my two days showing up was for two different interviews. On the second I was full on all out in goth attire and makeup, well needless to say I passed my drug test and got the job.

It's important to look the part in any work environment when it comes to the employers standards if of course if certain jobs doesn't apply for an employee to look well groomed in a work place then it's okay as long as you follow the guide lines on hygiene and dressing well in a accordingly fashion and doing the job well then that's okay too depending what jobs is suitable for you and what you have or had applied for maybe the result of what jobs to look for as far as appearance wise. However as far as music goes, if a person wants to dress in any way of form or fashion of the culture because of their inspiration to the music they may listen to it's best to keep it to a minimum just to stay in the company's standards and guide lines just to meet the employers expectations and professionalism. But other than that \m/ Keep Rocking on!!

I can relate to this as I used to have wild hair colors back in uni. It wasn't metal looks I know but more a bit mix of colorful hair and black clothing, black nails, and all other death related kinda items. As soon as I reach my final year in uni, I do realised I need to change my looks for professional one, though I do have a dream to be still doing what I like but it won't pay my necessities.
Maybe some people think that sounds like faking myself, but I would call it as being realistic and less idealistic of my own preferences. From my first job until now, it is always related in HR dept. So of course there is no way back for me to dress whatever I want but that's alright. I can still be doing what I want when I'm not working anyways.

Every time I've gone for an application I've cut my hair and shaved my beard too. My first actual job after high school was a night shift factory line job which I literally just walked in, asked if they were hiring, and started that night. Most of the other people I worked with there were metal heads too and we could listen to music while working and no dress code other than nothing too loose that could get caught in machinery for safety (day shifts did have dress codes). I currently have what is basically an office job since that works better with class schedules, business casual dress code sucks, but we can talk to each other while working and listen to music/audio books here as well. Those are two options that are generally pretty common to look into if you're searching for something with low requirements which doesn't involve putting up with crap customers. They're not the most enjoyable jobs in the world, but a job is a job they don't have to be fun, you can always keep searching for a better job after being hired.

This video is a real eye opener to me. I'm lucky enough to be able to study for a bachelor degree (in software engineering) and I never really have trouble with how I look. I also won't really have a lot of trouble finding a job (99 % of the people that finish this study get a job within 1 year, about half can keep working where they did their internship). Hearing someone say that they would take any job was kind of strange to me, but then I realized that I'm pretty lucky that I most likely can choose where to work (there is a shortage of people in my field).
But honestly, I'd never cut my hair for a job. I can look professional with my hair tied back and just wearing professional clothes. If people don't want to hire me for how I look, then I don't even want to work for them. Although I'll most likely shave of my small beard if I have to go for an interview.

I love your attitude toward landing a job.
My work motto is "I need a job to support my metal habit" \m/
    ...
I work in corporate america and when I first started working here I dressed pretty conservative when I first started. I would see how other people dressed and stay within the "norm". Which I found was pretty laid back here and there are girls here with "mermaid hair".
Now I wear my battle jacket into work and pretty much wear a metal or rock shirt every day. I do keep into consideration what I wear into work when I am buying shirts. I don't pick shirts that are too offensive or "scary". I save those shirts for shows. Needless to say I don't wear my "bonded by blood" shirt to work anymore or I do but only during the cold season when I am wearing a hoodie over it all day.
All in all I find if you are respectful toward customs (where ever you are) others will be respectful of you.

Anything that you don't have to come into with clients, is probably a good fit, as long as you respect the safety regulations (for example, in my job, I have to tie my hair for my own safety and personally I never questioned it as I deemed it common sense, considering my working environment).
That said, there are also what I call "people"-jobs that are pretty chill about this. One of my closest friends liked to color her hair for example but works with people on a daily basis and she didn't know if that was allowed. She asked it first and her bosses said it wasn't an issue, no matter the color...

I work in a library. They're pretty open-minded :) My hair was blue and quite long when I went to the interview about one and a half years ago, now it's purple and short-ish (about the same length you described yours being when you called your 1st work place if you'd get an interview). I've worked in many libraries in the area after my first interview (I don't yet have a degree, so I cannot be hired full-time) and one of my bosses actually has a very long, multi-colored hair and a nose piercing (a small ring on one side) and several piercings on her ears.
I dress pretty freely on my workplace, I think I'm the one who mostly sets the standard on what I would not wear to work... Skirts or shorts only if I have thick leggings/stockings under them, no deep necklines, no high-heeled shoes (one of my co-workers is very feminine and wears low heels every day, but most wear sandals because they're comfortable to stay inside all day, walking a lot), not the most brutal or most sexual band shirts, especially if I know I'll be working on the kid's section that day... Usually I have on colorful skinny jeans, a not-so-crazy band shirt or print shirt, a hoodie if it's cold, also a scarf if it's even colder, my work shoes (they're kinda like loafers, but black fake leather, Idk what they're called) and some not-so-crazy jewelry. I only have piercings on my earlobes, though.
Besides my ex-boss, we have two metalheads at our workplace, both just tie their hair back during work and otherwise they look like they normally do. Their styles don't normally include spikes, though. One of them is into power metal, so those band t-shirts are usually pretty family-friendly anyway (I think)... The other one doesn't really wear band shirts, he has just commented mine so many times I know he's a metalhead... Also, there's one girl who has a very simplistic style otherwise, but she has this anime fan hairstyle, you know the one, kinda like emo but then again not... She sometimes wears circle lenses to work, makes her eyes look huge!
I know a goth who does UA-cam videos and works as a baker, full-time. She has a video of a typical work day (everything she could show us). She puts on regular clothes (changes into actual work clothes once she gets there), ties hair back (at work puts a net on them), no makeup, no piercings (she has many, she just simply doesn't put them on when she goes to work).

I can vouch for working in record stores and tattoo shops as a job that doesnt mind how XxEdgyxX you look but they dont pay very well (unless youre the actual artist that is). i actually just got hired for a desk job by the government and so far im pleased that they dont seem to mind hair dyed unnatural colors or tattoos since my manager has a large tattoo on her wrist and they dodnt mind my hair having the ends dyed red (tho it is very faded atm and not so shocking yknow?). ALSO i recommend faux piercings, i have fake snakebites because i always anticipated them getting in the way of getting a real job, plus they look so real as heck so im not sacrificing the actual look of it :D.
