Jason Cano. Glam metal was fine until the record companies startrd telling the bands how to look & sound ( this same thing happened to Helloween...Michael Kiske was told to sing higher, the rest of Helloween was told to play faster...by the president of Noise Records , who knew nothing about music at all !) .... And a imparative to repeat their past success. Example: A band's first or second lp goes to #1 , then above all , repeat it! We ( the record company ) will make more money..but you the band will become more well known , but we'll pay you a mere pitance for your work & claim your copywrites as our own( even though we didn't write the songs)!
Carrie Yu depends on the band & if they weren't a " cookie.cutter" type of act.. Example : once Poison released " Looked what the cat dragged in" back on '86...then here came all of the bands that were xerox copies of them. Tuff & Vixen ( who I saw as a female Poison) ..some the bands had some very good musicians in them. Pretty Boy Floyd was one of them...but once Glam metal exploded, every band ( whether they played Glam metal or not & a lot of them didn't ) got tossed into the mix by a greedy music industry& record business..Some of the bands that the recording industry mistakenly added to Glam Metal are Great White ( Heavy -Power metal), Whitesnake ( Metal) , Scorpions( Metal), Dangerous Toys (Metal), Skid Row( Metal) & Femme Fetale( Metal & one of my favorite bands) ..none if these bands were Glam Metal bands ..but once the music industry added them to Glam metal...that's when the confusion began
I didn't read all the comments, so maybe someone brought this up already, but I'm pretty sure we wouldn't hear bands like Cannibal Corpse or Cattle Decapitation (just picking up these two on the top of my head) on the radio anyway, no matter how much they were censored.
definely one of my bigest pet peeves.. and I go insane! whenever I'm listening to a song on the radio, tv or even online and it's censured. and then you hear and watch pop celebrities be as disgusting and unsensured as it gets.. oh gush I can't deal with that bs
Back in the 60s , The Doors played Light My Fire on the Ed Sullivan show ... Standards & Practices tried to censor the line "We couldn't get any higher" But ,when the Doors played the song ,just to get even with S& P at CBS ..Jim Morrison ( who may have been nervous)sang the questionable word any way
One of the key foundations Metal music is built on is - Stand up for yourself, & what you believe in. As such to allow something like that to be censored = selling out.
Metal is unique in the fact that it stands on it own two feet. It is a genre that doesn't do what everyone wants it to do. I think it should deffiantely stay as what it is now. Rammstein is a classic example as they shed the govournament after their album got censord in Germany
I watched Trailer Park Boys when I was 10 and playing violent video games. I wasn't censored to much of anything as a kid, which hasn't effected me negatively AT ALL! In fact, I think it's made me learn and prepare for reality, etc, rather than believing everything is pure and fantastic.
Nymphetamine. I watched horror movies & rock concert type shows as a child...Guess I was lucky on that one aspect.. My parents were a little older at the time, so I wasn't watched as closely( as far as movies & tv shows) by them as my older sister was. .
I'm from Romania and while passing through Hungary, I've heard I Am Above by IN FLAMES and Wrong Side Of Heaven by Five Finger Death Punch on the radio, and the 1st one literally starts by saying "Cut my throat and throw me to the wolves"
Actually i do remember seeing some Cannibal Corpse, Death, Pantera and Morbid Angel videos back when MTV was music television. Also you gotta love Beavis and Butthead !
I love SAVATAGE. When I was working in the D.C. area many years ago, I saw them at least two, maybe three times. The funny thing about censorship was that during the 70's when I went through secondary school and college, the songwriters/bands/record labels would make it work to their advantage. There was the radio version of the song and the "real" version of the song that could be bought as a record or tape. In the radio version, the prohibited word would be substituted with another word that rhymed and had the same syllables. Listening to the song, it was obvious from the context to tell what word should have been there. There were also many songs which used double entendre. The 45s that were sent free to record stations actually had "Radio Version" stamped on them.
Took the words right out of my mouth, and the Lady Gaga bit was a nice touch. Now... If only I can possibly have my vote count as 1000 "likes" on UA-cam without anything illegal...
Cabbage, those who want censorship usually are the religious types who 's holy book get the axe for advocating violence against other faiths, sexual violence against women ,fear mongering etc..
"Hall Of The Mountain King" is one of the greatest Heavy Metal albums of ALL-TIME!!! I've been a Savatage fan ever since I first saw the video for the song "Hall Of The Mountain King" on Headbanger's Ball, back in the late 80's.
Yea Australia is very strict on censorship, it sucks like you said with Left 4 Dead. The creators of the game Hatred didn't even try to sell their game in Australia because they knew it would be censored severely. It's pretty fucked up :/
mitcho487. Yeah , I know about this ! Look at what's going on in America right now! I' m afraid that we 've been sent back into the early 50s ...when we had McCarthyism & it was a modern day witch hunt..not to mention the censorship of comic books, due to the content.. We're going through worse than the same bull shit right now..our president is obsessed with one group if religious extremists( they're the only terrorists in the world) , while he condones& actually agress with what both the neo nazis & the white supremasists are doing! This is what frigtens me ! .
In Paris underground the advertisement for the album book of souls been took off because it was "to scary" but you can see ads with girls almost naked for bikini ads or others shit like that
Fuck yes Savatage turned into one of my fav bands after hearing you say its your favourite band so i went and checked it out,and holy shit was it something.Hotmk is definitely their best album but I've listened to all of their discography by now.Thx for introducing to this awesome underrated band.As far as White Witch goes its kind of a catchy sing a long type thing but i kinda like it.But the title track is where its at.Anyone who hasn't heard them should at least give them a shot. Excuse my blabbering and as always, stay brutal.
MADNESS REEEEIGNNNSS!!!! I think the term mainstream has become a vague term that tends to be fairly meaningless. Most bands that have achieved any kind of legendary status have been featured on a common public market long before many of their fans have even heard them. Especially if you are talking about some of the roots metal acts like Sabbath, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Dio. Have you seen the video of when Dee Snider took on Al Gore and the PMRC? Worth watching and definitely very insightful to the subject of this video.
The type of metal which is so extreme to the point where they would need to be heavily censored is already underground anyway, and for that very reason. What I've always found weird is that only mainstream pop/rap music, rock/punk, and the more well-known metal bands end up getting those annoying "Parental Advisory" stickers on the album covers. Green Day said "fuck" a few times on American Idiot - they get the sticker. Devourment's lyrics are about every fucked up violent/sadistic/rapey act on this earth - no sticker. But then again, you're more likely to find an album called "American Idiot" when browsing your local Barnes and Noble music section than an album called "Molesting the Decapitated". If a band's music is clearly about disturbing things, then a potentially offended person would: 1) Have to spend the effort to actually go look for that metal. It's not gonna be in their UA-cam suggestions. 2) They should know what they're getting into. If you intentionally listen to a song called "Entrails Ripped from a Virgin's Cunt" by a band called "CANNIBAL CORPSE", don't say you're 'offended'/'triggered'.
Do you get VH1 Classic in Canada? If so, there is a show on that channel called Metal Mania that plays a lot of metal videos. It's mostly glam, but occasionally you'll get a good video like Holy Diver, and they usually play a Scorpions song. I've caught a Testament and Exodus video on there before
If metal was mainstream it would lose its talent and if you have been a metalhead for a long time would you look like someone who likes metal or someone who likes trends WE'D ALL LOOK FAKE!!!
The same thing happen to the song called Beer ( and stuff) By Psychostick .. The part where the clean singer says "Let's go drive a car" was bleeped out I understand why it was censored ..Drunken driving causes more Fatal Auto Wrecks in America ,than riding a bicycle ..
The only thing I can think of is in Run to the hills, theres the line of "Raping the women and wasting the men" but that's literal history. You have to delve deep and think like an idiot to think Iron maiden needs warnings
slayer - plus some other really good bands -- Well they where years ago example ... when season of the abyss came out . it was on a good rotation, and on a lot of music channels. remember that is when nirvana hit and a lot of underground music styles not just metal surfaced ( a lot of weird indie stuff ). plus there was things like headbangers ball and radio channels that had metal time slots for an hour or so .
My points of view in short: Censorship would completely remove the purpose of dark themes of extreme metal and forcing it on mainstream media most likely gets a bad response. Metal music, especially extreme metal is meant to be distorted and disturbing, filled with negative attributes such as hatred, anger, misery, isolation and so on. These are the most common themes around extreme metal music. These themes echo through the style of music, both in sound and in lyrics as well. The very moment you start to apply censorship to the lyrics, it loses all the magic. If metal music was really wanted on larger audience, it would be much better option to choose songs with milder lyrical themes when censorship wouldn't be required to perform than play songs with half the lyrics blanked out. Of course this would restrict certain bands who stay true to their lyrical themes and want to keep it extreme. But I very highly doubt extreme metal will ever reach the mainstream status over current popular music genres. Partly because of the nature of these negative themes that are so popular in extreme music, it serves only certain audience. That's how it should be. Since for new audience metal music is difficult to get familiar with, it shouldn't be forced to the main media because most likely it would only get bad response. Having channels for people who are interested, to more fluently get used to metal music would be good but rather difficult to implement efficiently. I think closest examples would be radio stations dedicated to rock and metal music. But still, for people to get into extreme metal scene, the last step usually requires self-search through internet or recommendations from friends already familiar with it.
My number one Italian brutal death metal band Posthuman Abomination isn't going to be on mainstream radio. Which I'm fine with because they would have to waterdown their music in order to be played on a platform.
My friends think that Metallica is rock or something, because "they doesn't scream". And as it turned out: they never listened to 'Kill Em All. In the end, I had to explain how metal works (power metal, black metal, death metal etc.) ... annoying
In my opinion metal doesnt need to become mainstream, but I think the media should give it more respect. By respect I mean there should sometimes be EVERY kind of music played in big radio stations. Black metal, progressive metal, jazz, blues, classical, folk etc. That is just fair, becouse many music genres are not recognised at all becouse people wont find it if they dont find it from radio. Supporting only few music genres is... its almost like "racist" against other genres. And I dont want that stations play metal that sounds like pop (Linkin park, Metallica) becouse that is even worse. When you play only pop stylish metal in the radio, you are forcing metal to become the same shit as other popular genres. Lets pay respect (and at least give a CHANCE) to every genre in their own personality.
"New-wave tried to destroy the metal, but the metal had its way. Grunge then tried to dethrone the metal, but metal was in the way. Punk-rock tried to destroy the metal, but metal was much too strong. Techno tried to defile the metal, but techno was proven wrong. Yeah! Metal! It comes from hell" xD
im not sure censoring metal will do anything censored rap songs are widely hated and most of the time the "explicit" version is the most popular i think its just because people dont like how metal sounds
I have questions a question for you. My band recently recorded our second album and we are making a censored version. We were never asked to, we're just cutting out all the fucks and shits etc out of courtesy for younger people that enjoy our music. Do you consider that to be different considering it was my own will?
Oh, and Savatage is bad ass. Amazing Power Metal riffage, from before we even had a concept that Power Metal was a thing... lol. Also, a very Christian band, if you care, and the remnants of Savatage are actually the basis for Transiberean Orchestra (the guys that do the metal Christmas songs).
long ago in my country, in the night like at 12:00 am puted metal music, I was a child those days, and to be honestly it scared me a lot :v. and my parent warn me to never listen that satanic vagabond music, but here I am, metal music call me and I enjoy it a lot.
I've got to give it to you, I too am glad that they're not putting any Slayer on television. Why would I want to hear "**** **** world of ****, dealing with **** every **** day"?
I don't have a problem with metal being accessible and bands having very wide audiences. Most bands I think deserve wider audiences, and that means letting go of this idea that by having a wider audience and having more going into marketing their music (without outright changing their style), they've "sold out". Clean cuts are also dumb. Either listen to the original cut or don't. If there's as much cursing in a song as that Manson song to the point where it needs to be censored to hell and back, maybe it shouldn't be released as a single. Savatage also rules. Hall of the Mountain King is excellent.
Censorship sucks. It's the reason why I had to go to some weird obscure website to find the video for Cattle Decap's Forced Gender Reassignment because UA-cam can't fuckin handle it. -_-
Honestly, I don't really care whether a band censors itself to become mainstream. If a band does that, I simply ignore it, because usually when a band censors itself, it tells me that they have nothing of value to say.
I've heard parkway drive get radio play here in Australia, at work I heard "Crushed" on the radio, not even the uplifting anthem "Vice grip", no it was crushed, with a main chorus line of "Crushed by the fists of God".
I feel like bands should provide different lyrical options for broader audiences. Artists are of course free to use whatever words they want to express their song's meaning, but it would be understandable if a band were to make a song minus curse words so that it could be played to the public without being censored. You can get your point across without cussing. That doesn't mean every song needs to be written for pansies, but that's kind of what singles are for, to release a song that caters to the public a little more without giving up your style. I relate to what he's talking about here... the first time i heard Hardwired was on the radio. You know which words are fuzzed out. But having never heard the song before, i had no idea what it was about because i didn't get the full effect of the lyrics. Were Metallica wrong for releasing the title track as their first single? Nope. But it did make it difficult to receive via radio.
I find mainstream music has more negativity than metal. Look at how drugs, sex, and gang violence is glamorized in mainstream society. No one seems to realize there are consequences to ones actions. I feel sorry for the masses who are brainwashed to listen to such regurgitated shit! Btw, metal is more rooted in symphonic music which shows there has to be a skill to play it. Remember that dreaded tri note all?
hey black metal werewolf if you haven't seen a movie called Deathgasam I think you'd really like it its a heavy metal horror comedy pick up a copy and watch it you won't regret it ( the movie also goes by another title called 'Heavy Metal Apocalypse', same movie just a different title so if you see that first pick it up as well)
I bought the Korn Greatest Hits vol. 1 CD at walmart and the song A.D.I.D.A.S is on it but it's censored and it really sucks. The censored version of A.D.I.D.A.S. is so stupid that it's hilarious! 😂 Every f bomb sounds like a really messed up sex noise 😂
Wal mart was started by Sam Walton who is a Christian..I hope that this explains why A.D.I.D A.S. was censored.. As if those morons never went through puberity in their collective life ! This bunch of prudes probably think that having sex is dirty & sinful !
it's the standards& practices department at the tv channels that censor the language in musi c videos which are broadcasted....the last time that something like this happened, was when the doors performed on the ed sullivan show back in the 60s. the line girl we couldn't get much higher ( light my fire) the word " higher " was thought as to being only a refference to drugs. so a lyrical change was suggested by someone who worked for ed sullivan .from the original word higher , to girl we couldn't get much better. this is when i agree with jim morrison .if the word was changed it would'v e killed the song! the same thing was requested of the rolling stones ( let' spend the night together. the three objected words were spend the night.. how did jagger get around this ? he mumbled. the words )... as far as lady gaga's video where she jacked off goes,..i'm sure that there are some overly prudish evangelical christians who may have gotten offended because of it ..& tried to have it censored as well.
I really couldn't care less if metal ever becomes mainstream or not. I listen to metal because I like it and I've never really cared about how many other people like it. I would say that maybe the only reason it might suck if it becomes mainstream is that concerts would probably become a lot more expensive. Beyond that, why care?
remember when metal got mainstream with glam/hair? yeah...we should keep metal away from the general audience
Fuck yeah! Glam was fucking terrible
+Carrie Yu I suspect it's more to do with how the bands dressed than the music itself.
TheMainQuarter. And the mainstream record companies who forced their money making bullshit on us in the first place!
Jason Cano. Glam metal was fine until the record companies startrd telling the bands how to look & sound ( this same thing happened to Helloween...Michael Kiske was told to sing higher, the rest of Helloween was told to play faster...by the president of Noise Records , who knew nothing about music at all !)

I remember when Vevo was a big thing and they censored so many music videos I had to go to other websites to view them
That shit was pretty irritating
Vimeo isn't any better
I'd rather metal not be main stream. I like to listen to my own music and not what everybody else is listening to.
Y2JACK blackbird is a sweet album man
Same here.

Jameson Croft I was thinking about that too, but then I thought more about it, it's probably kind of like receiving unsolicited dick pics
Christy. Not to mention receiving porn poses as pics in the people you may know section on FB!
if she has a pearl..* hint * * hint*
From where do you got that werewolf sound?
Black Metal werewolf, could you do a remake on this video?
the volume is too low..
My number one Italian brutal death metal band Posthuman Abomination isn't going to be on mainstream radio. Which I'm fine with because they would have to waterdown their music in order to be played on a platform.
great video. you're always spot on. and savatage is awesome!
what's the band from his t-shirt??pls
The audio is very low. you should turn the volume up, please.
What about making a censored version that you can listen to if you want but still keep the regular for the people that want that to
Linkin Park tried to make metal mainstream. *HAVE WE LEARNED NOTHING, BROTHERS?!*
Metallica already did
and they are still good ;)
My friends think that Metallica is rock or something, because "they doesn't scream".
Yeah! Metal! It comes from hell"
xD
im not sure censoring metal will do anything
censored rap songs are widely hated and most of the time the "explicit" version is the most popular
i think its just because people dont like how metal sounds
I have questions a question for you. My band recently recorded our second album and we are making a censored version. We were never asked to, we're just cutting out all the fucks and shits etc out of courtesy for younger people that enjoy our music. Do you consider that to be different considering it was my own will?
I was so fucking pissed when the megadeth CD I bought and these boots was censored I was so pissed
What about vevo?
I've got to give it to you, I too am glad that they're not putting any Slayer on television. Why would I want to hear "**** **** world of ****, dealing with **** every **** day"?
What's the band on his shirt?
It's a Dethklok shirt.
My favorite track on hall of the moutian king is strange wings.
kind of cool i found a fellow metal head who is also into Trailer Park Boys
I'm fine with metal not being mainstream
we don't even play metal on the radio here
where do you live,holly?
Gross
hahaha I didn't know they did that to Left4Dead...love that game though, still enjoy playing L4D2 from time to time
what is that video with lady gaga called
Poser.....
I've heard parkway drive get radio play here in Australia, at work I heard "Crushed" on the radio, not even the uplifting anthem "Vice grip", no it was crushed, with a main chorus line of "Crushed by the fists of God".
torille
He inspiresme so much I'll make a song about this topic.
i walked the streets at a young age saw evwrything almost everything.now of that was censorship it was just there
This video is totally spot on.
Hey I am 22 years old my birthday was on July 25th
When the kid is preschool to school age.. PBS is your best friend
Just so you know, the audio is very low on this video
Remember that dreaded tri note all?
hey black metal werewolf if you haven't seen a movie called Deathgasam I think you'd really like it its a heavy metal horror comedy pick up a copy and watch it you won't regret it ( the movie also goes by another title called 'Heavy Metal Apocalypse', same movie just a different title so if you see that first pick it up as well)
Awesome movie! Can't wait for the sequel.
I agree with what he says in this video, I really do
south park the stick of truth also got censored in aus so eveyone i know just imported it myself inculed
I saw korn live a week ago :D
that may be at he same thing that they use the nightly news when someone inadvertantly uses some foul language .. sort of a electronic belch?
Wal mart was started by Sam Walton who is a Christian..I hope that this explains why A.D.I.D A.S. was censored.. As if those morons never went through puberity in their collective life !
This bunch of prudes probably think that having sex is dirty & sinful !
Hey dude, do you like Manowar?
is a7x bad?
Yes
As far as I know there's only one song that eve head a radio edit...
Psychostick's song beer is good & stuff
The only reason why metal should go mainstream is that it could be combined with other stuff to create some badass shit.
Did you know Cannibal Corpse was banned for like 10 years in Australia
I agree completely
For sure and to censorship metal, might as well be played as instrumental only :(
fucking well said definetly subscribed! censor or don't show it
I'd rather think for myself
I totally agree
Do you like sepultura ?
... Why the slam on Lady Gaga?
it's the standards& practices department at the tv channels that censor the language in musi c videos which are broadcasted....the last time that something like this happened, was when the doors performed on the ed sullivan show back in the 60s. the line girl we couldn't get much higher ( light my fire) the word " higher " was thought as to being only a refference to drugs. so a lyrical change was suggested by someone who worked for ed sullivan
.from the original word higher , to girl we couldn't get much better. this is when i agree with jim morrison
.if the word was changed it would'v e killed the song! the same thing was requested of the rolling stones ( let' spend the night together. the three objected words were spend the night.. how did jagger get around this ? he mumbled. the words )... as far as lady gaga's video where she jacked off goes,..i'm sure that there are some overly prudish evangelical christians who may have gotten offended because of it ..& tried to have it censored as well.
I really couldn't care less if metal ever becomes mainstream or not. I listen to metal because I like it and I've never really cared about how many other people like it. I would say that maybe the only reason it might suck if it becomes mainstream is that concerts would probably become a lot more expensive. Beyond that, why care?
