I cried like a babe when I "let go" at the end. The pain of a parent having lost a child is impossible to describe and yet...Rime does. The one word I'd use to describe is was cathartic. This is why most reviewers didn't understand the game...they've never lost a child. This game is a masterpiece. So is Dear Esther.

Rime was one of the first games I ever picked up and played by myself (I saw an ad for it on Instagram and was entranced by the art) and I loved it so much and agreed with your take on the game. I remember being blown away by the ending and so impressed by how it told such a beautiful story in such a unique way. I looked up reviews after I finished it and was confused by all of the negative comments, but at the time I chalked it up to me being a new gamer who hadn't played really anything else before. I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was deeply moved by the art, music, and story! Great video!!

I just finished this game! I loved the first island, but it very quickly stopped being a relaxing experience afterword. I felt like I had to constantly fight the game itself to find the collectibles, even when it was clearly pushing me forward. By the end of the first island I had given up on collecting anything but the keyholes and the white shades, and near the end of the second island, after the underwater section, I very nearly permanently missed a keyhole by randomly choosing the wrong path, and from then on i nearly had an anxiety attack every time i reached a fork in the road. When I got to the last(ish) stage, depression, i looked up a guide and found that the keyholes, unlike the rest of the collectibles except maybe the lullabies, would fill in the next keyhole you were missing, instead of a set keyhole, so I had unknowingly missed two of them. I also found out that the keyhole in depression was obtained by backtracking after completing a section when there's nothing that would have implied that something would change if you did, and the white shade is found by forcing yourself through what seems like an invisible wall. After failing to find the keyhole, even after following a walkthrough, I quite appropriately fell into a bit of a depression and just got the shade, finished the game, and looked the rest up on the internet.
Overall I liked the game quite a bit, but I wish the whole game would have been more like it was in the first island, I felt like it did a better job at getting me to explore and not stress out about what paths would lock me out of finding a collectible I wanted. That and some minor gripes with the way platforming felt (I didn't always feel I knew what button would do what, which caused me to jump into the void a few times) really prevented me from being able to wholeheartedly recommend it.

I agree completely. Before I played it I had heard it was a metaphor for the stages of grief, so I think knowing that coming in made me notice more details and enjoy it more, noticing how the gameplay and environment in different areas corresponded to those feelings and what not. I had no problem following the story either and I cried like a baby at the end too. I also loved how it was made by a Mexican studio and you could see the influence of their native culture in the game. Great video man, you deserve more views!

ty for the amazing analysis. If this was literature, the critics you were talking about would have been the people who read through the story and took it at face value, rather than the subtext, meaning, inspiration, and historical importance/influence that inspired the writer (game dev) to create their art work.

I don't know why some people wore confused about the ending. I took the whole game as a kid's journey to haven. You can take it as his father's grief and that all of it was happening in his father's mind. In the end, the father finally accepts the horrible fact and goes into his son's room and lets his son move on to haven. Either way, it's an amazing game.
The game has really touched me in the end... Every now and then I watch on youtube peoples reaction to the end of the game, even if I don't speak Italian here is a beautiful one: @
The game touched me really hard in the end as at the time when I was playing it my best friend was diagnosed with brain cancer... Before I could finish the game she passed away...
So when I finished the game you can imagine how it felt... especially in the end when it writes ''new achievement: letting go...''

This game completely caught me off guard, the game definetly feels familiar with it's controls and puzzles but is a very unique experience when it comes to the story at hand. It is a game that is best played knowing nothing about it and just letting it guide you on a somewhat relaxing and welcoming journey that has a few hurdles along the way. All the emotional beats hit and the game has one of the best and most satisfying endings i've ever seen. What else can i say, i highly recommend it.

    *SPOILERS*
The one word to describe it is "therapeutic"? I can't disagree more. Yes, the first level maybe, but it's only setting you up. Literally, even, because the game is about a father going through the five stages of grief where, yes, the first level, is denial. It is a beautiful landscape and every aspect of is quaint and cute, but that's giving you the idea this is how it is going to be like for the rest of the game. It takes more and more dark turns along the way and when the end comes we realise it's all been a delusion, an illusion. You don't play as the castaway lost son who tries to go back to his father; you play a father's delusion of how the boy must have been searching for his father when in reality, the boy is dead and the father lives alone on the island in grief ever since. Some might find it cathartic but I was really believing the boy was on his way of finding out the mystery behind a lost civilisation and the "oh no he fell into the water" cutscenes were just stuffing of the background for explanation of how he got to the island ("yes, we get it, he fell off the boat"), but it's the death scene given more and more detail. Getting the explanation in the end where the key tower wasn't a city hall or an astronomy tower, but instead the actual keyhole of the dead son's room left untouched since his death until he now thinks he is ready for it, was absolutely mortifying. He might be prepared but we as players were definitely not. I felt really rough the whole evening after finishing the game, to the point where my gf had to ask if I was okay. I was not.
If you have lost someone, especially a child, and you're not completely over it for many years by now, this is a triggering game where you will not find yourself getting cute visual therapy, but instead going through the pain of losing a loved one all over again without warning. It's the deceit of Disney's The Fox and the Hound (Tod & Copper). It hits you with anguish out of nowhere in a cute setting. I would not recommend this game for anyone in grief unless you are aware of the story (by now) and are fully prepared to go through with it.

  • @muneeb-khan
    @muneeb-khan 4 роки тому

Respect the opinion but disagree because of two points. 1. Enjoyment 2. Catharsis
For the game to be therapeutic I have to enjoy it rather than being dulled by the gameplay. I respect the game's intention and design a ton but without enjoyment what do those elements serve? And as a direct result of the mechanics of the game if the reveal at the end does not provide some form of catharsis and emotional release because you were simply going through the motions during the puzzles, not connecting with the characters, annoyed at the fox which has maximum 4 barking sounds. Then how can others feel that it is therapeutic?
I feel that you enjoyed the game and felt a sense of catharsis that satisfied the hours of build up. But other critics, and myself, didn't have that same experience. That doesn't detract from the value of their opinion it just means that you won't see eye to eye with them. And that's fine. Art is subjective. It just wasn't worth it for an allegory that could have been told in an hour for some.
But I don't think anyone "missed the point"

  • @peterisbb

I gotta disagree with you here Connor. I was interested with Rime when it first came out ages ago just by the visuals but never enough to actually buy it. I played it after it went free on epic games (I'm assuming that's where you got the game too). I don't exactly know why (maybe it's because I've never experienced grief or maybe I had played too many artistic games recently) but when I realized the game was about grief, which was about two-thirds through bargaining, I got kinda annoyed. I wasn't sure at first but as I got into depression it became very clear. The ties to grief in the gameplay felt a little too loosely strung for my taste. Denial was alright only because they literally hadn't told you anything yet Anger was okay since the angry bird stole the ball that was for progress but I don't feel that fearing the monster is the same as experiencing anger. Bargaining really felt like a stretch since the automaton felt like it genuinely wanted to help. It didn't feel like the boy was really giving up anything by creating the robot and helping the robot. The robot was just a means to an end. The only real bargaining like was that the boy had to help the robot get through some obstacles so he could help but, as I said, it doesn't really feel like the boy is losing anything by doing this. That being said depression was the worst chapter for me. At this point, I had fully realized that the game was about grief. However, I didn't care about the robot (just a means to an end) so while I saw the boy crying over the robot having to go away, it didn't affect me in the slightest. For the record, I'm not normally like this. I normally empathize with most anything but I had played quite a few artsy games recently so that might have drained me to some degree. So now I know what to expect and thoroughly annoyed at the whole experience for what felt like wasting my time on a poor run through of the five stages of grief. The kid throws himself down into the void, metaphor for acceptance blah-di-blah-di-blah. THEN, the game throws in that the kid is the one who had actually died and that really just threw the whole thing for a loop. Now I'm annoyed that the father wasn't the character I was playing as. The kid wasn't grieving so why was I just playing through the stages of grief with him? All in all, I still disagree with the critics. The gameplay did serve the purpose that it was meant to serve, I just felt that the whole experience was a poor way of representing grief. IMO, a much better game about grief is Gris. It also features a beautiful aesthetic and I feel that the gameplay better exemplifies the feelings and struggles of grief where mechanics relate directly to the stages rather than levels featuring ideas about those stages. That being said, I may only feel this way about Rime because I played Gris first (it was about a year ago so I wouldn't say that it directly affected my opinion of Rime) and if you were to go and play Gris you may find Rime did a better job of the whole grief thing.
TL;DR I feel Rime failed to properly show the five stages of grief and used the wrong protagonist for the adventure. The game called Gris much better at exemplifying grief and is worth your time if you liked this game. Of course, since I disagree with you on this game you may disagree with me about Gris.

    • @Cloud_Dreamer7

It's interesting that you were able to pick up on the fact that it was about grief before the ending, I haven't heard of anyone else that was able to do that. It sounds like that's what ruined it for you, as you're not supposed to know until the end, and then you can replay it and see how it ties together. I think you don't play as the father because you're basically playing this sequence that's happening inside the father's head, with the child as a representation of the grief. Adds a layer of mystery rather than just telling the direct story.

To me it's all a bunch of pretentious gobbledygook. While I can loosely see the association between each level and it's "theme", that's a very tenuous connection. The red cloaked figure also only really appears in the first level and then disappears, so it's not at all obvious that he's the protagonist. Why is everything from the boys perspective, even the drowning flashback the first time around? What is with all the spirit stones, fox spirits, spirit automatons etc. What's with the depressed leech people, the petrified people, and why do their behaviour change so randomly? The first time you're introduced to them it's like they're judging you, and you're just one of many that have tried to go this way and failed. Maybe you have to be mexican to understand it, but I sure don't see any connection whatsoever to the theme of a grieving father. It's just a bunch of meaningless flair with many interesting, and completely unanswered questions. The "theme" of the game has absolutely fuck-all to do with anything that's actually in the game, that is only very haphazardly connected at the last moment to try and force sense out of senselessness.
