  • A sad and yet incomplete tale. . .
    Hey everyone, I am getting back on track with things. Kicking it off with some of my thoughts on the ending of RiME.
    This was a game that definitely took me by surprise with the story it provided as heart wrenching as it was I thoroughly enjoyed it.
    What about you? Think it was too long or too short?
    What about the ending? Is my thoughts way off the mark because I failed and missed some of the hidden stuff? Let me know.
    Though until next time be awesome and take care!

    Thanks. Your video actually helped me develop my own theory :D First of all, I'm not a native speaker, so forgive me for my mistakes.
    I received the story a bit differently. I think that we see father's memories through the eyes of the kid. The titles of all the stages are father's emotions that are represented directly in the gameplay. But first, why through the eyes of a kid? Because the world contains things that are key factors to kid's imagination. Speaking of keys. There are images where father is a king, mother is a queen, the kid himself is a prince, there are huge towers, powerful kingdom and such. Typical boy's imagination. The memories we experience are chronological. The huge tower we see in the first stage is the timeline. I mean, inside we climb the tower to the most recent memories of the father. That's why the kid becomes black, after the point, where we see him drowning. Because he's dead. He's no longer present, but he exists in the father's memory as something absent, but present at the same time. The kid doesn't have a direct representation in the real world, but the father remembers him. During the credits we can see the surroundings of the house itself. There is a lighthouse, which is represented by a huge tower in kid's world. There is a ship, which we can see in the "Anger" stage, where one of the windmills is built with a boat, and there are a lot of wrecks. The huge pterodactyl-like bird could be a eagle or something like that. The kid can hide under structures with ruined roof. The same kind of roof we can see in the ending in the house, since both roofs are delapitaded. And actually we can see the same delapitaded roof more clearly in the "Gallery" section. So the kid probably was hiding in his house, when the eagle came. I don't know exactly how first titles refer to the story, but in "Anger" the dark people you mention are in my opinion the father's emotions percevied by kid. They are present somwhere in the surrounding. Just try to recall the moments where your parents were having a quarrel, or were angry at you when you were a kid. They could be away, but you would still just "feel" their past actions and you would be anxious, or sad. In "Anger" those ghost may represent the fear of losing his wife. In "Bargaining" they are like an early stage of deppression, where they just drain the kid of the love to his father, because he becomes more and more distant. And in "Depression" they ignore you completely. Just like a man in deppression would. The "Deppression" stage of those ghosts actually seem similliar to those tentacles visible in one of the "Keys" picture, with the king.
    Well, that's more or less how I see it. I probably missed a ton of things I wanted to mention, since I've been writing this for the past 15 minutes. And of course I don't understand even more than I understand, so this may not be valid. For example, the switch during those scenes on the sea. The moment the father appeared as a playable character in this scene I immediately thought that I was playing father all along, and the previous scenes with a kid was his past, where he lost a brother (Therefore a black "absent" person again), and after he grew up the story repeated itself and he lost his kid. So.... There are a lot of unanswered questions, and some things just seem illogical to me.

      Thank you glad to hear I could help haha. I must say for English not being native you definitely write very well.
      I think you may really be on to something here, it's been hard for me to see this through the fathers eyes because so much imagery was the child's. The way you laid it out though definitely fits together in my mind with king, queen, the kingdom. Maybe the bird thing was a seagull that terrorized the child at some point in their life, creating a negative imagine?
      I know I missed some stuff in my playthrough, and have just discovered such as if you collect all the "light" people you see the mother as well at the end.
      You know at one point I considered it might have been a brother type of deal, but didn't see anything to link that. Though it's possible for sure.
      Thank you for taking the time to write this out, I appreciate it, giving me whole different perspectives to look at.

    • @patrykdabkowski4855
      @patrykdabkowski4855 7 років тому +6

      Oh.. Seagull... Definetely sounds better than an eagle. My bad xD
      Yeah, and there are also those statues, that crumble to dust when you touch them. But as far as I know they are just for an achievement. Which is a shame.
      That's the beauty of art. Everybody sees it differently. And games like this are worthy to be refered to as pieces of art ;D
      I'm just surprised how little information there is on the internet about this game. Especially that it has been quite some time since the release. That's why I shared my perspective ^_^

      No worries, still trying to put it all together, I think I need to run through the game again even haha.
      Gotcha, that would be a shame if that is all the statutes really did. I agree, art can really get you thinking about many things while still being able to appreciate what is before you.
      It's weird to me too. When I was playing through it and finished the game I poked around and it seems this title mostly slipped under the cracks which is a shame because despite a few technical hiccups it was amazingly well crafted. Thank you again. :)

    The names of the stages are the 5 Stages of Grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. I think that the boy died/drowned and the stages are the father going through the stages of grief. In Denial, the father is denying that his son is dead. I think that is why he washes up on a shore. His father is not willingly to believe yet that his son his dead, and that he is out there somewhere. It's also possible the the boy is also going through these stages, and at the end he finally accepts that he has died.

    • @thecr4zytort623
      @thecr4zytort623  6 років тому +4

      For sure the stages are there, seems most of the ideas come from if it was the fathers grief or the son trying to reach back out to the father.
      Though I think you nailed a good in between. Maybe they are both going through the stages together in their own ways of understanding? Also could tie in on why you see glimpses of the father throughout the story.

    • @masterkogha8852
      @masterkogha8852 6 років тому +4

      That's true... I definitely think it's both and not just one. Cause you definitely see the father grieving, but then why does the boy have to go through all those stages and climb the tower if it doesn't have something to do with him too?

    What I gathered was that the kid had washed overboard and drowned. I agree that I think the island is an in between the mortal and spirit world. That is called limbo. And looking at the chapter names after finishing the game
    I noticed it’s the five stages of grief. Not only is the kid trying to accept and remember the fact that he had died but also his dad not wanting to let go of his little boy. Firstly the poor man lost his wife, and then his boy. Those trials I think were very well represented as the stages of grief with the art, music, and the atmosphere. The boy had the little fox as a toy from when he was alive so naturally a child’s mind would remember stuff they loved. Using that to create the little fox as a guide because it’s something familiar. Throughout the game you find toys too and at the end there is the ship and the bird that I noticed from the anger stage. At the end when the is running around the rainy stage I noticed it’s a necropolis. The murals I’ve seen show a human turning into one of those shadow creatures. What I believe to be depicting life and death. So back to my point about the end, when the kid jumped into the starry pool I believe that was his way of accepting not only death but taking him back into the mortal world to see his father one last time. The story made me cry so much, I wasn’t confused as much as I was emotionally invested in this game.

      Excellent take from the events for sure. I feel the way the story had unfolded and some items I missed in the first playthrough. Plus of course the chapter titles and atmosphere lent to this being the case for sure.
      I know the developers kept saying they want it left to interpretation, but it's just laid out so beautifully to miss the main moments.
      The only thing that recently hit me is the animals on the island at the start. Was that just where he washed up and his spirit kept moving on or just there to give the island more life.
      Either way tears were shed, especially finding the ending where the wife is sitting there with them all too...

    • @ForgeMondes
      @ForgeMondes 6 років тому +3

      So true and I will add something: the fox was both tbe toy and the mother, because both are depicted as being "made" of flower petals. Maybe the toy was a gift from the mother and that is the reason that is associated with her trought the petals. That will also explain the fact that the fox is moiurning the death of the boy in the last stage. And it is also a guide, like an angel, like his mother getting him trougth all the stages.
      Finally, the red-hooded figure would be both the shadow of the father and the notion of his own death that follows him like a ghost even the first stage, which is negation and starts pointing the key places in order to go accept death. (Not a guide like the fox but a shadow of a memory that will ulterly make you realise reality: he is death) Also, in the first memories of the boat accident, the red-hooded shadow was the one to fall. This scene work in two ways:
      1- The protagonist contemplating his own death in order to realize it (again, the shadow of the memory of death)
      2- Given that the game represents the grief' stages of both the Father and the Son, this could represent the desire of the father to die instead of his son. An if I remember well, this particular memory happens between Bargaining and Depression, so it fits pretty well into the desire of sacrificing himself in order to get back his son (bargaining) only to be the first step into aceptance that brings the pain of his lost (Depression)
      Man I had fun with this game, the puzzles and the story are just perfectly depicted

      You know I never made that connection at all. That is interesting to place the mother as the fox guiding the boy and trying to keep him safe. I mean I could definitely see the connection because it can all fit for sure.
      Wow I can see that for the father too because most of the time you see him it's usually in a spot as you described to accept death.
      1. Yeah I mean you can definitely see that because the boy at the beginning seems to have completely forgotten everything. An amnesia from the trauma and as you proceed through the stages he remembers more and more.
      2. That would make sense as well as you can tell the father is going through the stages of grief while the boy is remembering what happened and going through his own grief. Maybe even the boy for his mother and the father for his son?
      Really great perspective on what could have happened. I dare say up there with the top from what I've seen/heard.
      Game was definitely in a league of its own. I wish they added more or at least have plans for a follow up in some way. Maybe not the same story, but maybe someone else's story on the island? Haha.

      I know I'm really late to this, but I just played it and am still researching it. Great observations, all of you. I think, even though the journey through the 5 stages of grief are experienced by both the father and the son, we're shown mostly - If not exclusively - the journey of the boy through "limbo" or "purgatory". One thing I noticed is if you press the "yell" button throughout the game, it changes from stage to stage, and in fact moment to moment. For example, the rainy depression stage the child cries when the button is pressed. In some stages the child would hum, or sing pleasantly. And some moments were contextual, like around the awesome robot bros, or in the beautiful lush green areas with fountains, the child would exclaim "woahh" like a little kid who is amazed at something complex. When you broke out of the ash, and were a shadow person, you would hiss loudly when the button was pressed. I thought those were nice touches in a game where literally everything is a clue. Notice in one of those stages, those ring faced ghosts would emerge from an ash husk if you broke them, and others were empty. I think the guy who made the video is right in the assumption that these trials must be completed to escape this land and move on to the next plain of existence. Those wraiths might be people who have given up over time, and lack the strength of mind to remain sane, becoming vengeful spirits. Notice how they congregate in front of where you must go to progress, and around items you can collect? They act as obstacles, with a crab-in-a-bucket mentality and a desire to trap you down there with them, and anyone else who might arrive, cause misery loves company. I love how his "world" was populated by his imagination. The bird that chases you and tries to eat you is also a toy in your room before you died. The ship, and all the other toys played huge roles in shaping his trials. Some to give comfort like the pinwheel (notice the red blue and white tower-tops were pinwheels), and others to guide like the fox, and some to help directly like the robot bros, (also all toys in his room btw). The light house. That damned lighthouse! You can't connect them until the end, but while playing the game weren't you like..."okay, wtf is the deal with that tower? I mean, it looks like end-game stuff, but why the key-hole shape? And why is it so tall??"
      At the final moments, as the father looks out the window, you can see the same exact ship from the memories, and a really tall white lighthouse. I think that is what the key-hole tower represents. The trials become elevated and treacherous, so the boy sees a tower. Perhaps the key-hole is a symbol for light, which is the key to defeating evil spirits and basically everything else to progress in the game. Maybe instead of a bland tower, the devs put that symbol there cause it does represent the lighthouse from the boys life, and light after all, is the key. (? Who knows)
      There was some stuff i didn't get, like the upside down parts while and after going down the spiral stairs. And the drawings on all the stairs? And the weird swirling water at the bottom. I guess that could represent the way he died, and perhaps the opposite of climbing upwards towards light and freedom. Such a strange, brilliant game. I wish I could ask the devs everything and get all these answers and more. Thanks for making it, Tequila Works, and thanks to you guys for having awesome discussions about awesome games! Peace!

    I just completed the game for the first time and damn did it strike my emotions.
    As I was playing it, I was pretty stuck on one scenario, the kid was shipwrecked and arrived on the same island as what he left, but everything was deserted, and that man in the red cape was his father, of what I thought was a tyrant king and his Prince. I thought that the black ghost things were remains of the beheaded by this tyrant, and were scared of the kid (as I thought he was the son of a king) .
    But once I experienced this anagnorisis near the end of the game, I realised that it was all in his father's mind, the child was actually dead, and was now a figment of his memories, a spirit.
    I realised this and watched as his father let go of his scarf, immediately making me burst out in grief. This game creates relationships between characters and near the end, upon realising that none of it is real, all of these characters suddenly are lost, causing us as the players to experience pathos for the boy, but we then realise that the boy is dead, adding to that build up of pathos we experience.
    This game is amazing, the only game that has ever made me grieve that much, with such a turning point, realising everything we have achieved was for the father dealing with his son's death
    Thanks Tequila Works.

    IMO the 5 stages of grief are both the father's (because he lost his son) and the boy's (because he lost his life). Neither can accept their losses (denial) and live in a state where things don't really make sense but it doesn't matter. Then anger hits. Father is angry at himself for not being able to save his son and the boy's anger manifests itself as that giant bird which nearly made him stop progressing. Then bargaining. Boy starts dealing with his new reality, solving complex puzzles, adapting to his new environment, making friends that help him (robots). Then depression hits because his friends can only take him so far. The rest of the way he has to go alone, that's why he turns black, he's tired and close to giving up, to becoming a black ghost who can't move on. Then it cuts to the father's acceptance. It means that in order to move on, both have to go through those stages. If the father can't let it go then the boy can't like go to heaven or something. The boy's adventure is his passage from this mortal world to the next (spiritual). Only those willing to move on, let it go and evolve will make that passage. And the father can finally move on with life. Btw I think the fox is his mother, who died and already made the passage. She can show him the way as guide but can't help him beyond that, cause he has to earn it. Beautiful game!

    The moment i felt this game as a more spiritual or imaginative world was when the boy went into the light and we get that first snippet of the boat in the desert. I personally feel that the stages are for the boy, he denied he was dead in the first one, something presented a challenge to us in the second one and made the boy angry, he begins to bargain in the third one when he learns more about the world and what he can and can’t do in the third one, towards the end of the third and beginning of the fourth he bargains the sentinel (the robot friend) and then the door is opened for him. He is now sad because he realized what he did and what he must do, once we finish the fourth one we all get this understanding of a process. And the ending is the boy realizing he is dead and now is in the after life

      Best I was able to come up with much later is that it was all the kids imagination. He kind of pieced together an understanding from what he knew/remembered with the island being a sort of in-between realm.

  • @zossamos6595
    @zossamos6595 6 років тому +2

    There's no need for theories, since the game gives you everything needed to understand it... the whole game is 'inside' the father's imagination, it is him processing his grief. Like when at first, the father falls out of the boat, because he wishes that he would die instead of the kid. Then after emotionally rejecting the truth, he slowly accepts it, with the culmination in the epilogue, where he finally enters the boy's room (which he presumably didn't do since the boys death) and examines the items inside. In his grief, he constructed a fantasy where the boy didn't die, but ended up on an island instead. A place filled with his favourite toys (fox), the chimes from his room (the sentinel), the only thing he could save during the incident (the red cape), etc. The story is actually very basic and realistic (apart from completely imagining the whole thing - that's for game purposes only), it's a story about grief and how it affects people. Theories are fine, but when a game actually tells you everything, they're kinda pointless

    "The 5 stages of grief and loss are: 1. Denial and isolation; 2. Anger; 3. Bargaining; 4. Depression; 5. Acceptance." ~Kübler-Ross model~
    So I think, that these 5 stages are the different chapters and as you said, also the different conditions of the shadows.
    Furthermore, I think the whole game is from the father´s point of view, because he lost his son, then he was in his house and thought about the whole story and made it through all the 5 stages and that you saw his mind in the form of the shadows.
    Thanks for your video, I wouldn´t have noticed the names of the chapters without you and in general, I agree with your and especially @Patryk Dąbkowski opinion on the game, I just wanted to add a bit of information, I think that could be interested in.

    I see where your coming from and your idea makes more sense than mine but with i the island used to be run by the robot things and then the shadow people took over the island and defeated the robots and then the robots help you kill the shadow people by using themselves as keys to the doors.
    I think this because there are alot of parts where you need the robots to pass through a certain point of the level and they are left in pieces when you find them first, this to me kinda made me think it was the robots island first and then the shadows took over.

      This is one of the rare games where I have definitely changed my mind multiple times. There's so much to it and yet, it's left so open ended you can come up with your own understanding.
      I mean you could even say the robots were built by the light people. I think there were 6 in the game in total to help fight off the shadow people and we come in much later after many epic battles with the shadow people winning in the end.
      Otherwise I'm still leaning toward loss and grief playing a big part to the games underlying story due to chapter names among other things. :)

  • @slimdim1
    @slimdim1 7 років тому +4

      Playing from the fathers POV is an interesting spin, especially since the father did pop in here and there. Then again the character you play as only has a piece of the raincoat that the father later let's go of so it is possible.

      ...once I saw the chapter names, I understood further what the story was about. Its the 5 stages of greif after losing someone. And yes, Its for the most part all in the fathers' head and through his perspective...coming to grips with the loss of his son in his own ways.

    My theory is the boy died and we were in limbo having to combat obstacles to help the father get through his grief after losing us...at the end when he sees us in the bedroom we are giving our last bit of light to him to tell him that it is ok to let go and to reassure him that we are ok...you can see when the father is standing at the window that he still doesnt want to let go but he knows he needs to so that we can have peace too. I think the people in ash that you can break apart are people in limbo whose family could not let them go so they are stuck there until their loved ones can move through their grief as our father is. The fox represents our comfort and also represents the comfort of our mother. The hooded man i think is the representation of the boys and the fathers want to change the course of events that led to the boys death which is why we see different figures acting out that scene. The 'ghosts' represent the fathers 'demons' this is why they are faceless and why their emotions align with the stages of grief....

    I figured out early on you were dead, and were in a type of purgatory world. And had to do with the 5 stages of grief. The shade/shadow people to me are people that aren't able to move on yet. I didn't quite understand the big eyeball on legs thing and what they were all about though..
    I initially thought that your kingdom was take over by darkness, and your parents let you leave on a ship to get away from it, then the kingdom was taken over and everyone died. I thought you were going through this purgatory to rejoin your parents that had also died..in the next life. I thought that the eyeball robot leg guys were light bringers of sorts, and helped get rid of the darkness so you can make your way to the light?
    I was way off though LMFAO.
    Either way, amazing game.

    • @thecr4zytort623
      @thecr4zytort623  6 років тому

      Better than me. For the majority of the story I thought you washed up on the shores of a forgotten kingdom that had fallen from war/famine. That you were the child sent out and somehow returned even at one point.
      Looking back I think that makes the most sense for the shadow beings. Those who just aren't coming to terms with it and almost forming their own civilization. Plus if you notice when you first meet them they are terrified, halfway through they are angry, then at the end they are kind of just there almost like the character you play.
      I know the robot thing is one of the toys you can find, I just figured it's stuff that he projected from memory when alive.
      Though completely agree, an amazing game.

      @thecr4zytort623  7 років тому

      Yeah I have no doubts on that. The way the ending was setup though was it all just the father trying to accept it, the child, both of them, or was there even more to it.
      I think they finally confirmed there were no plans for further content, so kinda where it ends up sitting. Admittedly there were a few things I missed, but didn't show anymore to the core story from what I saw.

    • @hamandcheese73
      @hamandcheese73 6 років тому

      Yeah, I'm leaning a lot towards the theory that this is all connected to the father only. There are a couple of reasons I feel that way. First of course is the chapter names, which seem to relate specifically to the father. Also, the boy's main goal is to reach the giant keyhole tower. Once he does, the scene cuts to the father holding the key to the boy's room. So the way I see it, in a way the boy kind of represents the idea of the father accepting the loss of his son. The boy has to travel through all the hardships, and all the stages of grief, until finally he reaches the keyhole tower. When the boy finally comes face to face with the statue of the father in his house, that is the exact moment when his father has accepted the loss. That's why everything surrounding the boy fades away in that moment. The boy jumps from the tower, and his father finally has the courage to enter the boy's room, and come to terms with what happened. In other words, I don't think it's a coincidence that the father finally worked up the courage to use the key on the boy's door at the exact moment the boy enters the keyhole tower and encounters the father. I think the boy represented that courage, that acceptance, and the story of the game is the journey of that acceptance to ultimately reach the father. That's what I took from it anyway.

    There is tow island in the world of the game the living island and the dead island, the mother pasted away so the father left alone and sad so the kid deside to go to the dead island to bring his mother to life, his mother was the black ghost how run away when you get closer, when you tried to help her she is fall in the sea, the kid was sad becaus the lost of his mother so he giveup, the father deside to go after his son and the father did everything that the son did, the father lost his son at the same way that the son lost his mother and he deside to forget
    THE END

      TheCr4zyTort haha, ok I'm probably way off but my takeaway was that the fox was his mother leading him to accept death? I found all white shades so saw the "nice" ending, bought a tear to my eye tbh and the complete lullaby is a beautiful song even though I don't understand it! Lol, so I got a story of a kid accepting death and the father accepting his boys dead aswell. I wanted to see what others thought as I to enjoy hearing what ppl take from the exact same thing I see?. Good video mate👍

    • @thecr4zytort623
      @thecr4zytort623  6 років тому +1

      AH! I'm glad I'm not the only one. I didn't find all the white shades at first, but after I did I thought the fox was the mother too. That lullaby really tied everything together, though wasn't sure I could play it in the video haha.
      I fell into that line of idea too, but I know others instead thought this was all a fevered/lucid dream the father was having. Which is also why he went into the boys room after.
      Thank you, I appreciate it! :)

    • @thecr4zytort623

      It more than likely would be showing that the Father was able to "let go" of the pain and move on as he was able to finally accept everything that had happened.
      Or at least that's typically what I see when it comes to situations like this.

    • @teclinsoro4523

      See that's the hard thing to pin down. You could say it was the father of the boy, but was it just the boys imagination? Was it visions that something had projected to push the boy forward. Or and this is a big maybe, I later came to discover, could it have been the mother guiding the boy?
      Because if you collect all the light shadows it shows the mother at the end too. This is something I discovered like a month after playing RiME, whoops.

    The boy you play as could be the child version of the father, it would kinda make sense as the child and father are related and would naturally look alike at the same stages of life and the reason he might be a child is that after the death of his son he could have chosen to hide within his childhood as he may have felt safe there, this would explain why we play as the father at the end (as we play as him the entire time) and the fact that we keep chasing after the cloaked figure (because subconsciously without knowing it the character knows that he is their son without seeing their shape or face) but then again it's just a theory .... A GAME THEORY 😂
