    I am absolutely in love with the fact there was a legitimate moment at UA-cam headquarters where someone saw that tweet and an entire department of people started panicking and making correction to the platform *during the stream*
    Spiff caused actual pandemonium within UA-cam HQ and that's absolutely incredible.

    • @cdubsoptional7849
      @cdubsoptional7849 Рік тому +674

      It's not so much that he's a pentester. He's damage control. These exploits could have been front page news or on wikileaks. Instead, it's just a funny youtube video, and instead of castigating the company itself for being crap, SB puts attention on some pitiful, low rent grifters, and the overall tone is that these exploits are just an accident, and youtube is going to fix them. Give me a break. These exploits exist for a reason. UA-cam wants content creators to be able to scam the system, because it's the companies paying for the adds who are getting scammed, not UA-cam. And if you really want to go down the rabbit hole, the companies being scammed are fine with it, because they use the fake UA-cam views/ad receipts/etc. to scam their clients and investors and etc. But what do I know?

    • @cdubsoptional7849
      @cdubsoptional7849 Рік тому +221

      And come to think of it, they're obviously cooking the books. The algorithm does what they want it to, and revealing low rent exploits such as these, provides a smoke screen to hide the real fraud/criminal shenanigans going on. I had a boss who got fired for embezzlement. He was never happier than when he caught someone else stealing, because that meant he could shift blame/attention, and embezzle even harder tgan he already was.

    • @phelan8385

      @@cdubsoptional7849 When advertisers figure this out they stop paying. And why is it obvious that they're cooking the books? You say it's obvious but give no reason. I have a feeling that whats going on here is a bit more sophisticated than that. Google is notorious for it's "automation first" approach, because they really couldn't operate any other way at the scale they have.
      It could be that the view and like counts start in a less-strict, unverified state to encourage organic discovery, but these counts get vetted more thoroughly once they cross certain thresholds that would incur monetization payouts. I know I've heard creators talking about numbers dropping off of what they originally were by the time they get paid for the views.

      @@_._.avid._._5951 See, that perspective is the same perspective that topples economies. People have it, corporations have it, everyone's trying to get their own and they don't care if they're actually contributing to the economy or not. Our ability to produce is abundant but limited, and parasitic business practices like this (that I despise no matter who's committing it), when multiplied across a population, have the potential to cause widespread suffering. So, I think it's bad to do that kind of thing.

      Based on the quality of the "animations", if you want to call them that, alone, yes it is disgusting, abhorrent, and at that point I'd rather they just stream literal flashing colors and numbers to fully embrace that "I really don't give a shit about what I upload" mentality. Or, better yet, grab some online educational literature and run it through a text-to-speech program, then at least it's contributing something slightly worth the effort of dedicating brain cells.
      (I don't fully understand the economic nosedive that you mentioned this practice may cause, so I don't have an opinion on that.)

    A few more details to note: only Chrome requires you to have all of the tabs visible for this to work. If you'd switched everyone to Firefox, and made sure they had disabled tab sleeping, you could have easily of pulled this off without having all of the tabs viewable.
    On Twitch, there was a limited time where a window had to be active to count as a viewer. This really sucked for anyone who watched a live stream on 2nd or 3rd monitor, and viewer counts tanked as a result, so the change was undone. This however, NEVER applied to Firefox, only Chrome.
    Still, in general, if you love your streamer on any platform you really should be using Firefox, as Firefox doesn't support a lot of this weird spying stuff that Chrome has added.

    The discrepancy between the analytics view count vs view count on the stream could be due the fact that analytics are often done by copying data into a database dedicated specifically for analytics stuff. The copying of data doesn't happen often, and certainly doesn't update as often as the "true" view count does, so I can foresee discrepancies like this happening if engineers have to quickly triage such an exceptionally urgent bug.

      UA-cam has been helping regular people make profit off of big corporations through ad revenue. They also provide a space for smaller businesses to have a somewhat fair footing in marketing their products and services to a large audience that they wouldnt be able to reach otherwise. UA-cam is not the enemy.
      The ad companies will likely try to have UA-cam implement a system to prevent bots or exploits from raising ad view count so they know they arent paying for any wasted ad space, or they will just renegotiate with UA-cam lowering the amount they pay for ad space since they dont know how many ad views are legitimate. If anything happens whatsoever, it will ultimately hurt creators the most.

      It is not new. I considered it an annoyance and found a way to not trigger it on the app. Don't close anything you are finished watching until you find the next vid. The auto watch doesn't trigger that way.
