@@gugg2216 Man, Chikorita was my starter in both Gold and HeartGold and I did not blow my brain out. I actually beat the game in both cases. True, when I chose Cyndaquil in Crystal, the game was significantly easier, but I actually did not like that, because it just felt... I don't know... cheaper? Yeah, that's probably the right word here. I just didn't enjoy the game as much as I did with the challenge presented with Chikorita. It just felt like starting RBFRLG with Bulbasaur. Just way too easy without any challenge on the road, if you know what I mean.

Chikorita was my favorite gen 2 starter to play the game with. It wasn't any worse than starting with Charmander in Gen 1, and everybody thinks Charmander is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Chikorita just gets hate because it's a grass starter. I'm still trying to figure out why the fanbase dislikes every grass starter so much.

@@CrimsenOverlordVideos when I was a kid I didn’t pick Chikorita at all since at that time I based it more on how much I liked how they looked and the other two I liked more. I haven’t played any of the newer games but I still keep up and decide which order I like the starters.
      Here’s my order:
Gen 1: Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur (I like all of them so this is a ‘if I have to choose’ order)
      Gen 2: Feraligatr, Typlosion, Meganium
      Gen 3: Marshtomp, Sceptile, Blaziken
Gen 4: I don’t like any of these so I’m not going to bother
Gen 5: Tepig, Snivy, Oshawott (unlike 4 I like the base forms at least so I picked from those)
Gen 6: Chesnaught/Greninja, Delphox (I put two in first place since I can’t decide which I like more)
      Gen 7: Decidueye, Primarina, Incineroar
      Gen 8: Cinderace, Rillaboom, Inteleon

    • @BrothaDesmond2

I think the most probable explanation is that there were multiple writers for the guide who did not coordinate with each other, and the editor just compiled all the submissions without looking for consistency. If the editor didn't play the game themselves (which is highly probable), they would not know the true order of events in the game, so just organized the events by what appeared to occur geographically first, without taking road blocks into consideration.

Silver is the canon version, in my opinion, and this isn't just because this was my first mainline game when I was 7.
Thematically speaking, meeting Ho-Oh after beating Red is just poetic. Lugia is still my favorite, but I can't imagine Whirl Islands being the endgame for us when the opposite game is us climbing the most culturally significant icon in the entire Johto region to duel a very prominent figure in the region's folklore.
Lugia's still important too, but for Ho-Oh to come first seems anticlimactic. Ho-Oh is the Mewtwo of GSC where Lugia is more one of the Legendary Bird/Beast trio in terms of narrative weight.

The reason the events are listed in the section for the town, and not organized by when you would do them is because Prima tended to make guides with the idea that you'd be flipping back and forth to reference things instead of going page by page. I don't think anybody ever expected anyone to do what you're doing. Lol. Most people use strategy guides explicitly as reference for justbthe oarts that they're struggling with, and being able to flip to a single section for the area where you're stuck is very helpful for that.

Silver was my first Pokemon game, which I got way back when I was in kindergarten, give or take. I had quite an... interesting experience learning how to play a real video game.
For a long time, I didn’t know how to get out of my house. Seriously, I didn’t recognize that the mat on the ground meant I should walk down from that spot. I thought it was a “cool big-kids game” which entirely consisted of walking downstairs to talk to Mom and then doing nothing else.
When I finally made it outside, I managed to keep playing past the first rival fight. When I was asked what his name was, I didn’t know that I could choose whatever I wanted. So I chose “???” since that was what the game said during the battle.
I remember when my Weedle evolved into Kakuna, and I thought I was the greatest Pokemon trainer ever. I was giddy with excitement for hours. I remember thinking that my Kakuna could conquer anything in the entire game.
Later on, my Kakuna evolved into Beedrill. I loved Beedrill so much that I wanted it to come with me on my adventure. I fiddled around for a while, and eventually found the “Release” function on the PC. I thought it meant “release from its pokeball so you could travel with it”. I learned the hard way that that wasn’t at all what the game meant.
I must’ve only made it past the first couple gyms. But I still remember it very fondly. What a great game.

It's the best option against Whitney, especially in HGSS (since taking a female one won't hurt your performance as much as in Gen 2. A female one won't be affected by Miltank's Attract, but will be far less strong in Gen 2). Because he's a really decent tank, that can totally shut down any offensive threat in the game. Growl + Reflect is pretty cheap.
They sadly lack Leech Seed normally, and Poison powder isn't that great (Later on, Body Slam is good to disrupt the opponent even more, and he has Light Screen)
Plus, it makes the rival slightly easier, since during the Rocket mission, he'll only have Quilava.
It's hardly the top choice (in HGSS at least, it's definitely Totodile), but for a knowledgeable trainer, it can be surprisingly useful)

I stumbled my way through Rock Tunnel, once lmao I didn't want to waste a move slot for Flash on my Pikachu, and I ONLY had a Pikachu in that file (Yellow version).

@@hanburgundy4317 On the original Game Boy, you could actually see the way, even without Flash. But with the Game Boy Color, it should have been quite a pain.

Let's just say I had Zubat and Geodude PTSD for a while XD Pikachu only is a tough challenge in Yellow.

Meh, I used to be a huge Pikachu stan back in the day - right around when Yellow came out I wanted to be Ash lol I already had 151 on my Red version, so with Yellow it was just me and Pikachu - and a Lapras for Surf and Strength, eventually.

Ah yes, Chuck Default-dancing after the rock throw bit, fucking LOVE how hilarious that sounds.

Now if only that can be communicated with Gen 2 or 4's graphics. Sadly 3D made the default dance so, use some 3d model of Chuck to do that then.

I had this guide and the way that they have all the info for an area on the same page instead of being in order was actually more helpful
