Those leaks were a gift that keeps on giving, I love how we're still learning about Gamefreak's thought process for Pokemon over 25 years later. It was clear from Ho-oh appearing in episode 1 of the anime that the Pokedex was never set in stone, even in the first games. I fondly remember those days before social media when the debuts of Togepi and "Pikablu" drove us nuts trying to figure out.
You're making some wrong conclusions because you forgot that the games come from Japan and were released over two years earlier than in the US. The Anime came out over a year after the first games were released, so obviously new Pokémon beyond 151 were only considered after the success.
Ho-oh being in the first episode of the anime is why I hate the "Ash is dead" theory. Even if Ash died in that episode, a literal phoenix flew over him immediately after.
Here's another fun fact! This time it's about Porygon 2: It's beta design is strangely similar to a Japanese food mascot named Pon De Lion. Even stranger, Porygon 2 predated Pon De Lion by several years.
I love how they occasionally bring one of these lost ideas back. Even the stork! I hope they revisit the electric tiger hamster and the fireball seal someday
I find it funny how little he took note of the dinosaur skeleton Pokémon at the end. It's possible that it's the monster from the original idea for the second Pokémon movie. Basically archeologists would have discovered some more dinosaur bones which would have come alive and destroyed stuff. It was supposed to be weirdly existential because if the headspace of the writer at the time (He kept writing stories about coexistence including a Pokemon revolution idea) In interviews he said it was meant to be a more normal dinosaur, but that could have changed before it was scrapped to better match the established lore. I really want to know if its index is by the legendaries.
tbh I wouldn't put tooo much stock into the idea of the movie vs the game, especially since that movie was made after they had already scrapped that skeleton.
@@TheObsessiveGamer Takeshi Shudō did confirm before his death that the whole "unstoppable non-Pokemon Dinosaur" was gonna be a movie until they asked him to dump that idea, and while it wasn't the final straw for him, he wasn't mentally okay, and kept drinking until his untimely end.

One thing to remember is the Pokémon ,at least early gens, were created as sprites first before being drawn, it’s likely many of these were only ever meant to be proof of concept and not indeed to actually be put in the current game. Also. Bellsprout having a planned evolution could be an explanation as to why Speout tower was in the game. Also this is the first time I heard “Animon” pronounced, so I just realized the pun
We got a tanuki pokemon, Zigzagoon is a tanuki hence why it learns Belly drum, Tanuki's drumming on their bellies is a common trope in Japan. It's strange because it evolves into Linoone which is a japanese badger.
7:57 - that mini Girafarig backsprite got left out. It's the backsprite of that white Wobbublob thing in the 1999 build that evolves into Girafarig who by this point had its final design, meaning that it was presumably an intended Girafarig preevolution between Twinz and becoming Wobbuffet. Most of the other Gen 2 beta dex videos forget to mention it too and it's a shame that we only have its backsprite, but it's clearly a separate preevolution of Girafarig.
A master or leader legendary dog would have been sick. Also I immediately thought of wobbufets tail when I saw that pre evolution of giraferig. I would say they made the right decision on the final design ideas for most of the pokemon we’ve seen here.

Just to point out to you, the original sprite design for Remoraid looks more like a pistol in nature, compared to its final rendition, which has replaced those features with fins The original design was in alignment with Octillery's original design as well, featuring a military theme.
Yeah, it's unfortunate how the gun ->tank inspo became less obvious with their redesigns though. I mean I heard that was the connection before, but I couldn't see it until I saw the beta sprites
Considering how gold and silver were supposed to cover all of japan and show kanto as a big city instead of a full world map, that would have drastically changed localization, map sizes and expected numbers of new pokemon per generation

The pokedex ordering is actually really simple to explain. They were more focused on designing new pokemon and the easiest way to get them in the game for testing is to add a new entry to the pokedex at the end and insert them. Edit: I would love for future legends games to go back to older unused sprites for pokemon to make and influence new forms for them as "ancient forms." It makes sense as in real life these are the earliest known forms of these pokemon.
Given how we now understand how this was a love letter to Japan and a possible last ever Pokémon game, it might be worthwhile to reexamine the unknown or more mysterious entries in this list for possible real world inspirations behind them.
21:20 Keep in mind that it has a green palette because that Cindaquil sprite was used in a build as a placeholder for Larvitar. That same build had already the fire Cindaquil starter as well, so that palette shouldn't be used against the ice type theory.
5:44 Ah yes, Espion's counterpart, Espion XD 17:47 Ah yes, I too wear my hands XD But seriously, great video. I always love seeing these beta sprites from Gen 1 and 2. It makes me a bit sad to see some of these didn't make it. My personal favorites being the cats RInrin and Rerurun (3:40), which are supposed to be based on the Japanese figurines called the Maneki-Neko, or Lucky Cats, that people would put in their shops to bring good luck. They'd have a hand on a coin and one of their paws in the air waving it up and down which was a way to beckon people to come over based on some folklore of a similar fashion. Kind of surprised you didn't know that considering the other Japanese references you made.
Wow, Chikorita looked so much more "at home" with kurusu and honoguma. I weirdly feel so bad for Chikorita, its friends were taken away from it 😢😢 It doesn't match with cyndaquil and totodile as well as kurusu and honoguma.

That final skeleton/fossil pokémon is reminiscent of the Super Metroid boss Crocomire, particularly after it reemerges from the lava as a skeleton.
Love your videos!
Thank you! :)
Great video! I think you may have over-edited your audio though. :)
5:44 Ah yes, Espion's counterpart, Espion XD
17:47 Ah yes, I too wear my hands XD
But seriously, great video.
22:36 Isn't Quagsire's Shiny purple?
Tediursa has a moon symbol, a full moon similar to that of Umbreon meaning that they have been designed probably close to each other.
I'd love using some of these! These look super cool....
That beta octillary would ve been a good Mega Evolution...
Damn is this an amazing idea.
@@TheObsessiveGamer Thx
I would just love if GameFreak after a couple of gens just release the beta stuff they were planning
Wow, Chikorita looked so much more "at home" with kurusu and honoguma. I weirdly feel so bad for Chikorita, its friends were taken away from it 😢😢 It doesn't match with cyndaquil and totodile as well as kurusu and honoguma.
Fun fact: The older Designs of Sneasel are more accurate to what it's Based on
The "Sicle Weasel" of Japanese myth
Sneasel is a design that has only ever gotten worse with revisits. The oldest plainest weasel was perfection, each draft since is worse.
