You had to live through Gen 2 to really appreciate it. These games came out at the height of Pokémon’s popularity (1998-2000, with Silver and Gold releasing in 1999). No one was bored with Gen 1 Pokémon, so the extra Pokémon were just a plus. Lugia and Ho-oh are GOATed designs, with Lugia’s popularity being bolstered by Pokémon 2000 the movie. The game delivered what people wanted; more Pokémon. No one knew the gameplay could get better - they just knew they liked the game and wanted more of what they got in Red/Blue. And the biggest cherry on top is what is easily the best post-game in the series. I’ll never forget my jaw dropping as a kid when I got to go back to Kanto. And then the battle with Red was epic af. These games were the quintessential 90s Pokémon experience. If you didn’t live through it, you wouldn’t be massively blinded by the power of insane nostalgia like some of us are lol
Yup. That’s a perspective I’ll never understand because I played the games out of order. There was still a lot for me to discover on my own but it could never be the same experience as anyone who played gen 2 when it released.
@@HiJello64 Yea everyone were hyped for it. It added levels and let us relive the old gyms and gave us new features. I dont know anyone who was around who didnt love this game. It was a worthwhile sequel in our eyes. Pokemon was huge...the show was getting a bit whack in that we realize how crappy Ash was so an expanded game was worth it.
Generation 2 was my favorite generation of Pokemon and part of that is I got to live through that era of the Poke Crazy. I remember everyone in elemetry school had GSC and on holidays and few free days that we got in school everyone would be playing the games. Gamefreak gave us exactly what we wanted when these games came out and that was just more of the pokemon we knew and loved. The honeymoon faze of RBY had yet to die off and this was just another enjection of the pokemon crack that we wanted.
Bro :) The games were so Successfully that they made few months later a Manga and Anime OF THE GAME LOL and real quick. if i only knew 20 years ago that the Pokemon Cards about to be worth in the future the price of my house right now
This game….I’m dead serious when I say, I spent soooo many hours on it! 😢I miss the days where I was comfortable playing a hand held for 8+ hours and not be bored.
I easily logged 900+ hours into each Gold, Silver, and many many more hours into Crystal. While you had some very valid negative points towards the gen2 games, they're still my favorite between Gen 1 and 2. Great video!
As a fellow gen1er I must say you are right for the most part but gen2 is still my favorite gen. I played gold and crystal so much.. even though yellow was my first own version (I watched someone play red before that) and has a special place in my heart.. gen2 was such a mind-blowing experience for me, especially the one step into Kanto again, this feeling can't be replicated ever again.
Okay so I grew up on Pokemon real big. When I was five and in kindergarten I saw someone playing Pokemon blue and I asked my dad for it and he got it for me. I had it for a few days and knew nothing about the game and all I did was caught five Pokemon filled my team and thought I won. Well I showed my dad my Pokemon and they were named things like jack ass, stubborn, shit and stuff like that. Edgy kid lol. But my dad took the game away and I didn't get another for a long time. I eventually got sapphire skipping gold and silver because sapphire had just came out and I played a bit still not understanding it well but things happened and I had to move in with my grandmom and I lost my Gameboy. Well at my new school a kid gave me his and with it Pokemon crystal. I was blee away with how pretty the cart was and played it to death. It was truly my Pokemon learning experience I learned a lot from it for a long time it was my favorite but eventually sapphire took the spot back over. But I will never forget all the great times in the second gen. Some of the best music in older videos games and some of the best sprites from Pokemon still
7:59 I'm so glad to hear you say you pick up Mary because Mary is a beast especially when he gets out to Ampharos Beacon Light fighting electric and I think one other either way it's badass 7:597:59
I've watched a lot of Pokemon play throughs, retrospectives, solo run challenges, etc. but not many have sounded like they've had as much fun as you did man. Subbing for more!
I’m quite a bit older than you and I’m still playing pokemon. Gen 2 is my personal favorite along with Gen 9 (blasphemy, I know). Lol. Gen 1 will always hold a special place in my heart but it’s not aged extremely well. But I’ve not played any of the card games since Gen 1. I used to play in trading card tournaments in the late 90’s until around 00 or 01 then I stopped. My cousin’s son collects the new cards and I have no clue how any of them work. Looks quite different
Gen 9’s not bad. I mainly collected cards for collecting but I had a friend who wanted me to make a deck to duel against his modern (2014) meta deck and the difference was night and day. I only won once because he had the most unlucky draws possible.
Brilliant review and matches how I felt about this gen. I think there are a lot of parallels between gens 2 and 4 - they can get credited for some essential new mechanics and features but in reality the next gen took those mechanics and used them in a better way. Still fun games to play though and up there with my favourites
8:05 odd egg, elekid and pichu all of them have hp grass 49, elemental punch access, while they ARE rng, all the odd egg pokemon bar tyrogue and magby do it's job 36:05 even better, the en versions have the odd egg built in while the JP versions do not have it at all.
I got Pokemon Red and Blue Dave release the batteries are still working Pokemon Yellow that are you still working and I just finally had to replace my Silver version about 30 years ago the gold 2 1/2 months ago but then I just picked up these rechargeable ones anyone's that plug into the wall I have no problem with battery

metal coat is not post game, you can steal it from wild magnemite on route 38 as soon as you reach Ekruteak
Nice catch. I thought that was only in Crystal for some reason.
Recently did this in my run funny enough for scizor.
Thank you I don’t know why people think this
Nice, this will be a great video to listen while working out !

Gold and Silver were peak solely because of Elemental Punchout league
I completely agree about the shiny craze, the only reason such an obscure mechanic blew up online is that it was easy content for influencers to do

”Been there Done that” perfect explanaiton of johto but my favourite game ever but very much the same throughout
I missed out on Johto (HG SS), after finishing Diamond and Platinum, so I went back to Fire Red and Emerald.

Gen 2 never hit as hard and gen 1 to me. I had blue and yellow and got silver for my bday and I don’t think I ever went past goldenrod city.
A starter with a HM move? Ampharos with 2 HM moves and a Scizor with no bug stab and cut 😅 horrible !!! lol
Have you seen Scizor’s movepool?
Can you stop with the upspeak?
Bro I wish I could.
Hard dislike after watching just first 2 minutes.
