The only reason people hate it now is because it somehow crept into the memesphere of jokes. I have no idea how the meme cycle works to revivivy these old forgotten classics into either smash hits again (i.e. Africa by Toto) or the butt of a loathed joke (like this song), but if I ever figure it out, I may just have unlocked the power of human congregationalism.

Bands today are quite literally not ALLOWED to sound like a band in the mainstream. Because the moment anything band-like enters the mainstream, they'll be reduced to... well, anything you see on Spotify charts. Electronic drums, synths, tuned vocals. This is what happens to every mainstream band post-2010 and that's why we don't have anything like Oasis hitting the mainstream.

Both Liverpool and Manchester are both close to the Irish sea/ old port towns. The accents are nasal because of it and that comes through in the singing voice. A lot of the Mersey beat bands from the 60s had that same sound and a lot of tge 90s bands hailing from the same areas did too because they were often singing in their own accent and vernacular, so the nasal tone comes through. Noone's 'copying' anyone, they're just singing in their own natural accents.

THANK YOU, Rick for giving this song the much needed breakdown it deserves. I think in contemporary times, this song is SO world famous in music history that it can be easily riffed on, taken the piss out of, or whatever - which I always found to be so annoying. This song is GREAT. Most of us listeneners dont know WHY its great until YOU break it down for us - the drum part where Alan comes in, the dissonace, the Suss chords, Noel's writing, Liam's VOICE. Ugh. This is truly one of the best songs ever written - accoriding to their new MG25 releases they recorded this in 1-2 takes. Brilliant. Long live rock and roll. Thanks, Rick!

  • @GJSolo

First of all, everyone needs to like this because it's too cool not be mentioned:
A second guitar comes in with the drums on the second verse, it's tuned to EADGAD, but still has the capo on the 2nd fret. They also play a variation and you'll notice the low thirds (G# and D#) on the E and B chords. Magical.

Epic. I remember when Oasis made it Big and it was amazing. Such a great time. Noel writes amazing songs, Liam has a great voice and attitude and both guys are Rock Stars. It wasn't just that, it was the way he stood when singing, plus the way he actually sang too, straight from the throat, which over time is not good.
He refused to do vocal lessons as he thought it was rubbish and was no need for it.

    • @biblical1694

It wasn’t smoking and drinking, he’s never been a heavy smoker and many other great singing smoked much more and sustained their voice. It was the way he sung, he pretty much stood there in an unnatural position and literally screamed every lyric as loud as he could. But his voice from around 95-98 is the best singing and vocals I have ever heard from anyone, he was special. It’s also good to see his voice starting to recover today

Yeah I've heard a lot of folks say Oasis is overrated and I hate it. They have great mixes, lots of energy, awesome lyrics, and play their own instruments - very well I might add. Too much negativity towards a well put together act. The only criticism I'd have is their arrogance. But however you look at it, they still blow any contemporary band out of the water. I'd actually say they were one of the last good bands to come out of the nineties. The post-95 era is when music started to take a dive.

It wasn't just their arrogance; the brothers Gallagher aired out their friction and antipathy in public brawls, with curses and hangovers - which lots of people have seen before. When it became so common that people would leave a place if they came walking in, they developed a bad reputation, which hasn't changed. They probably could make more music, if they weren't fucked in their heads. And by now, who cares?
