@@kentstallard6512. . . Have you not looked around these past three decades - or more?.. “Yes” to and for the (words - let us not forget the words) the music .
Yep the 60’s and 70’s. I’ll go ahead and say it. “Today’s music is NOTHING compared to the 70’s. What we have now is a digital wasteland, for the last 20 years or so. Listen to virtually all of the music now; there really are no music instruments in most of it, and really no vocals to speak of. No harmonizing, none of that. We did not know how good we had it back in the 60s and 70s, and how rich that period was.”
We were so blessed, and most of us didn't even realize it. I would add it wasn't just R&R, Rhythm and Blues, but Country put out some damn fine music in the 70s too.
A couple of others: Amie - Pure Prairie League Shape of My Heart - Sting/Dominic Miller Beginnings - Chicago Little Guitars - Van Halen Peace of Mind - Boston Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits And while Stairway to Heaven has a very recognizable intro, of course, not sure why it was included on this list when the intro is the same as the riff that's played throughout the song, akin to Landslide.
"Wish you were here" still tears me up, it came on the radio several times when I had a hour and a half drive to see if my father had passed away in the night...he had.
The day after my father passed away Time by Pink Floyd came on the radio, Pink Floyd were our favourite band... I played Wish You Were Here at his funeral, but Time really got to me because he died from alcohol abuse, he went from being clean just to wasting his life away... Time stops for no one, always say goodbye.

The Animals guitarist, Hilton Valentine probably came up with the MOST iconic riff in the mid-1960's to the song "The House Of The Rising Sun." That guitar part made many kids in the 60's pick up and learn guitar. Hilton Valentine passed away in January 2021.
Not 100% familiar with the history of the tune, but did he write it himself or did it already exist from a prior version? I know there have been a thousand interpretations of the song over the years but I’m not aware of the actual originality of The Animals version.

The fact that Universal Music Group *will* take this clearly educational video down if it dares mention the name of their copyrighted material shows that our laws have gone insane.
It's not even our copyright laws (which are insane in their own way). This is UA-cam's method of enforcement of their rules, which is a whole other clusterfuck.
It's just an abuse of the system. He could actually play part of it, but if UMG flags it, UA-cam will take it down until it can be ruled "fair use," which it undoubtedly would be ruled. However, I don't blame Rick for not wanting to go through all of that. So, in a way, you can blame UA-cam.
@@lukeschannel2983 it's because the sheer volume of content on UA-cam prevents actual intelligent analysis of the context of every piece of use. So instead they use a computer algorithm to just find instances of copyrighted audio or video and auto flag. Basically, they're using a better-safe-than-sorry technique so they don't get sued by the record labels and individual users don't have as much muscle to push them around and actually get the laws enforced as they should be.
I was sitting here crafting in my head a comment about how you left out Closer to the Heart. He’s not going to put Rush in here though they totally deserve it. Then all of a sudden, in the Top 10 there it is!! Mad respect for you Rick. You know how to pick ‘em. Yes, let people pay tribute and learn. But, don’t blame the lawyers, they’re just the firearm. Someone else is pulling the trigger and someone else makes the laws.
If Rick is playing this intro, think about the publicity to go and stream the song. Artists should be proud to have their intros featured. 12.5mm views. You can't buy that kind of publicity.
The Mamas And The Papas are widely acclaimed for their stunning vocals, as they should be. I feel that John Phillips’s songwriting, guitar playing, and most especially his arranging are vastly underrated.

So glad Over the Hills and Far Away was on the list. It’s the first thing that came to mind when I saw the title of the video. Your videos are fantastic. Keep up the good work, sir.
@Rowan Melton So you really expected some kind of a scientific objective list? How the fuck would that even possible to measure in any way? It's self-evident if you're not an idiot that it's his list, what else would it be.
@@MrJuuberi Actually there could be a scientific objective list. See, the mind can only process so many vibrations at a time therefor some of the most simple melodies can release the most dopamine compared to someone trying to cram a bunch of notes together. So yes, it's completely measurable to someone who has the time. I don't expect someone who uses the word idiot to understand, maybe you should read a neurology book sometime.
Alex Defatte the genius behind “the importance of saying no,” which confuses the medulla oblongata’s function in the brain and the basics behind our body’s’ defense mechanisms, before tying them haphazardly to the very voluntary decisions like “saying no”. You’re underestimating how the brain can understand music by a long shot. There’s a point where notes are indistinguishable, but that point certainly isn’t reached by this one guitar on one track. Shits dumb. But to end on a brighter note, you really should do another cover of that “angel” song you worked on a while back. I know this is way off track, but that was way better than that “I’d die for you” or whatever it’s called song. “Angel” deserves way more appreciation. Also, you should really get to recording separate audio tracks together through GarageBand, Ableton, or whatever daw in order to make your stuff shine. You have really good ideas sometimes, but it’s just unbearable to hear them through a shitty mic and single guitar. Working with a daw and actually sitting down and producing something could let you tweak your sounds and make everything from your vocals to your drums sound 10x better. I hope I can hear a fully mastered version of angel one day.
Uhm...I actually find that riff is easier to play than some of the others...but is pretty much at the top in terms of being awesome. The hardest lick IMO was Roundabout, and Beato had to splice takes in the video to make the transition sound right, which is the trickiest part of the thing, and the part I have yet to get right myself - lol. The other hard one for me is Salisbury Hill, but maybe now I've seen Rick do it I might have better luck. Thanks Rick!
For me, I would throw in the first 30 seconds of Emerson, Lake and Palmer's "From the Beginning." One of the most memorable and (for me) recognizable intros. And that keyboard sequence that comes later in that song is awesome, too.
The intro to Crazy On You has long been my favorite acoustic guitar riff. Rick may not have ranked it as his #1 pick, but I think it says something that it's the only one that he didn't even *try* to replicate.
I got asked to play, 'Here Comes The Sun', by a colleague, about a year ago. I notice your 'Capo', is in a different place. But, it tends to play itself, without thinking. Love tunes, like this. :)
People are mentioning in the comments the songs they like and the songs Rick didn't put on the list, but I had to go through a whole lot of comments before someone commented on how awesome Rick plays. MAKE NO MISTAKE, RICK CAN REALLY, REALLY EFFIN PLAY!! This should not be overlooked..
An acoustic song I always liked is lost on the great album “Who’s next.” “Love ain’t for keeping.” Great intro. Great crisp sound all the way thru and great acoustic solo and a nice, little diddy at the end.
I kept waiting for that Ultra Classic from ELP also. I mean he's throwing in Cat Stevens and freaking Chris Cornell even on the three that didn't make it. But no ELP? Come on Chris!
Great choices Rick! These songs have great composition with the "signature" unlike other lists who only include popular riffs. This is the only list where I've loved each riff
I had to look quite a down the list to see if anyone agreed with me. Immediately recognizable, and like some other people said was not just the entire song played in the beginning acoustically. It was a great hook that I just love good for you for pointing out.
@Michael Persico Agreed, and you could throw in Hey, Hey, What Can I Do which was written during that time. Rick could pretty much do a top 20 acoustic intros comprised of all Zeppelin songs.
Great clip. Sweet Home Alabama, or was that outside your criteria? Not whining. Just asking. Thanks. Also, what about a possible double-hook intro, like Wish You Were Here?
I was expecting this song and disappointed it didn’t even get an HM. I love the story of how this song came into being, Livgren was trying to teach himself fingerpicking style when his wife mentioned she really liked the tune and it grew from there.
Excellent video, TY. I was in my 20s in the 70s, so recognized all but two of these intros. Been listening to Radio Paradise for almost ten years now. Stellar music stream, mostly 70s rock to present. By now I recognize most of the thousands of their songs at the intro.
For all his wealth of knowledge of theory, music production, etc, let it also be said that Rick is one heck of a guitar player. I rarely agree with all the selections in these types of lists, because invariably, something seems to get left out. But I think you nailed this, Rick. I love the diversity of your selections. And kudos for highlighting Nancy Wilson’s beautiful intro to Crazy On You. The Wilson sisters are immensely talented. They were the first band I ever saw in concert, back in 1986.
Way back in 1984or 5, I took a communications/public speaking class. Our major project was a 5 minute speech/ presentation with visual aids. One of my classmates used his guitar as the visual aid, and talked about tuning the guitar, using “Roundabout”. My most memorable college moment!
Couldn't agree more. One of their most underrated songs. Especially good is he live version which is preceded by and linked to ''Broon's Bane'' on Exit Stage Left. Do really love ''Closer to the Heart'' as well though.
Wait...underrated by who? His role with the Beatles, as is with any true lead guitarist, was an Improvisor. People who do not fully understand music or what a musicians role is say George Harrison was underrated. Believe you me, George Harrison is about as underrated as The Beatles.
Can't really argue with those selections but heres a few more, Lifes A Long Song, Jethro Tull My God, Jethro Tull Question, The Moody Blues Green Is The Colour, Pink Floyd John Barleycorn Must Die, Traffic Suite Judy Blue Eyes, CS&N Tale of the Century, Yes
Love your channel Sir, I'm 48 and just started lessons a month ago and my primary bucket list item is to master this instrument before my time is up - spending 4 to 5 hrs a day 🥃
STEVE LAP Neil has several of those for me. Anytime "Needle and The Damage Done" comes up in the shuffle, nothing else happens for the next 2 1/2 minutes
these really should be in part 2: blackbird, behind blue eyes, fade to black, nutshell, nothing else matters, wanted dead or alive, more than words, dust in the wind
bill nalder me being able to play it in any sense is irrelevant. You said flawless, that has a meaning. That meaning was not reached in this video. There were flaws. Flaws that were quite obvious. Just cause you either don’t know the meaning of the word flawless or you have no ear, doesn’t make you right.
Sucks that the Eagles are so damn protective of their songs that they won't even let you say the names of them much less play them. They're just hurting _themselves_ in the long run.
There seems to be a part of story about bands taking down videos that I am missing. Sure, I get that the use of material thatbis copyrighted is how the owners of that copyright makes money. But technology has created more and better ways to get music out for people to hear and appreciate it. Since online music began, there has been bitching from some artists about how they are being unfairly taken from. What I have yet to hear from say, Don Henley, is what do you want? What would make take for you to be alright with Rick Beato to strum a couple chords or play a few licks from a song that made you wealthier than most people could ever dream? Its not like this channel uses original recording or copyrighted material. If Mr. Henley who seems to be the guy most out in front on this, why is it that he carries on about being taken from, and the only solution is to stop You Tube and the like from doing this. Certainly there must be an option besides scorched earth he could propose and not wreck things. Maybe not. But someone should definately ask him. Put him on the spot. What do you want? I saw a documentary one time where David Geffin called him simply a malcontent. He should want his music celebrated. The alternative is his work will become less and less heard. If his attitude is pay me or bite me....that should be exposed as well.

The best, people believed in music more..bowie explained it perfectly in one of his interviews
We were so blessed, and most of us didn't even realize it. I would add it wasn't just R&R, Rhythm and Blues, but Country put out some damn fine music in the 70s too.

The fact that Universal Music Group *will* take this clearly educational video down if it dares mention the name of their copyrighted material shows that our laws have gone insane.
You mean they'll enforce copyrights on masters they let burn!? Karma train is coming for UMG
So, in a way, you can blame UA-cam.
leafbelly what happened to innocent until proven guilty. It seems like they have it the other way around.

@Rowan Melton Then maybe that's why he said "In this video I'm going to countdown 'MY top 20 of acoustic guitar intros of all time'..."
Thing is is I can't disagree with it. Not a lot of good acoustic intro with today's noise called music.

Uhm...I actually find that riff is easier to play than some of the others...but is pretty much at the top in terms of being awesome. It's a little simplistic. Not a criticism as it served the song well. Maybe it's one of the 20 best known.
Me too... Maybe he just forgotit !
And styx (boat on the river) too
He cant play it
I was expecting this song and disappointed it didn’t even get an HM. I love the story of how this song came into being, Livgren was trying to teach himself fingerpicking style when his wife mentioned she really liked the tune and it grew from there.
POV: It's past your bedtime and Rick's your old cool uncle who's letting you stay up and showing you his favourite Jams.
Well, here I sit, at 1:30am as I watch this, officially creeped out. 😂
Excellent video, TY. I was in my 20s in the 70s, so recognized all but two of these intros.
Been listening to Radio Paradise for almost ten years now. Stellar music stream, mostly 70s rock to present. By now I recognize most of the thousands of their songs at the intro.
Man you are so gifted. Thank you. They don’t make ‘em like they used to. I’m so glad we grew up when the music was this good.
Oh, SAME!
You just have to search
There may not be much good music coming out currently, but I'm blessed enough to have everything accessible to me
For all his wealth of knowledge of theory, music production, etc, let it also be said that Rick is one heck of a guitar player.
If this video doesn't increase the sales of 12-strings I don't know what will.
LeRagster learned on a 12 string. It’s all my old man had so I didn’t have much of a choice but I’m thankful for it.
@@jmathieson15 You deserve credit for learning the hard way and not taking half the strings off
@Breaking Brad lol.. nice - did you make the purchase? i was looking at a nice seagull a few days ago -
As I was watching, I was thinking, "I need to purchase a 12 string."
@Breaking Brad Great idea! 12-string sounds soooooo much better than 6-string. IMO
Way back in 1984or 5, I took a communications/public speaking class. Our major project was a 5 minute speech/ presentation with visual aids. One of my classmates used his guitar as the visual aid, and talked about tuning the guitar, using “Roundabout”. My most memorable college moment!
Rush's "The Trees" also has a wonderful intro... It's always the first song that comes to mind when I think of acoustic intros.
Also the intro to A Farewell to Kings
La villa strangiarto
One of the coolest intros that people haven’t heard
Couldn't agree more. One of their most underrated songs. Especially good is he live version which is preceded by and linked to ''Broon's Bane'' on Exit Stage Left. Do really love ''Closer to the Heart'' as well though.
THANK YOU for putting Crazy On You by Heart in here. Amazing acoustic guitar intro, undoubtedly one of the best ever.
George Harrison was seriously underrated as a song writer. Im so glad his song made the list
Wait...underrated by who? His role with the Beatles, as is with any true lead guitarist, was an Improvisor. People who do not fully understand music or what a musicians role is say George Harrison was underrated. Believe you me, George Harrison is about as underrated as The Beatles.
Can't really argue with those selections but heres a few more,
Lifes A Long Song, Jethro Tull
My God, Jethro Tull
Question, The Moody Blues
Green Is The Colour, Pink Floyd
John Barleycorn Must Die, Traffic
Suite Judy Blue Eyes, CS&N
Tale of the Century, Yes
Neil Young - Old Man
Neil Young - My My,Hey Hey (Out of the blue)
One of my favorites: Nick Drake- Things Behind the Sun
@@leapsplashafrog and River Man, can't go wrong with Drake all of his stuff, and his innovative tuning, is worthy of mention.
@@omfug7148 That's right
Nick Drake was a master on this.
Neil Young for sure. Harvest moon simple perfection!
The Needle and the damage done.
I’m happy someone else loves Babe I’m Gonna Leave You, it’s an under-appreciated epic song amongst the more popular Zeppelin songs.
Great song, but under-appreciated? I don't think so. That song has always had tons of airplay, at least where I'm from
I'm not sure it's under-appreciated -still a huge hit.
Agreed.
I feel Jimmy Page's status as the composer of so many legendary rock riffs means his excellent acoustic guitar work often gets overlooked, for sure.
Under appreciated? Hardly. It’s a damn masterpiece.
Love your channel Sir, I'm 48 and just started lessons a month ago and my primary bucket list item is to master this instrument before my time is up - spending 4 to 5 hrs a day 🥃
Neil Young “Old Man”. A beautiful and haunting intro. Never gets old. Needs to be on this list
It's probably criminal that not a single Neil Young or Bob Dylan song made this list.
And for that matter, Heart of Gold...
Harvest Moon!
STEVE LAP Neil has several of those for me.
Anytime "Needle and The Damage Done" comes up in the shuffle, nothing else happens for the next 2 1/2 minutes
-Yeah I was waiting for a Neil Young song but nothing. "Needle and the damage done".
these really should be in part 2: blackbird, behind blue eyes, fade to black, nutshell, nothing else matters, wanted dead or alive, more than words, dust in the wind
I second the motion for this. Do a Part 2 Rick!
except more than words sux.. it's just too much smarmy popie glop and burp vomit producing..
I agree ... how 'bout , jumping Jack flash or street fighting man .
Blackbird by Alter Bridge. Although the Beatles’ is good too
@@metal_joe16 it doesn't matter where it was writtten, at Alter Bridge? WTF would somebody mention a copied from original version?
"Kind of tricky to play bc of all the pulloffs"....plays it flawlessly of course!!!!
No kidding huh. Looks easy too!
bill nalder far from flawless
@@trijigon Well im sure you could play it better, but i like to give Rick credit.
@@trijigon ] Just STOP man!!
bill nalder me being able to play it in any sense is irrelevant. You said flawless, that has a meaning. That meaning was not reached in this video. There were flaws. Flaws that were quite obvious. Just cause you either don’t know the meaning of the word flawless or you have no ear, doesn’t make you right.
“I stay away “ sounds so good on a 12 string😍
When you played Closer To The Heart I could hear Geddy Lee's voice clearly in my head
Just like I heard the electric guitar and bass come in on Pinball Wizard!
I definitely started singing before Rick interrupted me for the next song. lol!
And I could see Alex teaching Bubbles the one part he couldn't get. :)
I could pretty much hear the singer coming in on every song he played.
I started singing and then quickly realised that my voice is way too deep to get up there with Geddy.
Sucks that the Eagles are so damn protective of their songs that they won't even let you say the names of them much less play them. They're just hurting _themselves_ in the long run.
I see what you did there.
Ummm.... THUNDERSTUCK!?!?!? one of the all time intros....EVER!!!!...
@@christophermiller1595 not sure it's acousitc
Its all on Don Henley, who is reportedly one of the most egotistical and narcissistic humans to roam planet earth
"Question " by the Moody Blues is so F*ckin' epic! It is beyond reason. As a child I sat up and took notice! Oh, the humanity...
great, but all chords...
@@land7776 exactly! and the energy is of the charts! Like Pinball Wizard but far more primal!
@@allenlocke1935 it's kind of poo
Allen, yes I couldn't believe it when I first heard it! Open C tuning with a very fast strum that most persons have problems getting just right.
Agreed
Rick is truly an amazing musician. I completely enjoy these videos and how his ability nails the originals each and every time.
Except for "Crazy On You"...
