      That’s true. Their debut single plush has weird chords and key changes. That was pretty much unheard of in mainstream modern rock at the time. I always felt like they were coming from more of a Zeppelin vocabulary than grunge

    Rob Deleo wrote some sick, melodic bass lines. He was the secret weapon of that band. Kretz never rushed tempo. Quite the contrary. What a pocket he laid!! Some of Dean's solos were otherworldly with crazy bending and he never played just run of the mill licks. He got more and more tasteful with each record. Their music grew and changed so much from album to album. True artists. Can only imagine how fulfilling it must have felt with the vocal melody and lyric on top. What a band!!!

    This album was labasted by the critics, which I don't think was fair.
    I never heard the supposed Pearl Jam sound-alike quality of their sound; Pearl Jam and STP never once sounded similar to me, from song composition and chord selection to production, they didn't sound similar at all, at least not to my ears. Pearl Jam were very much a blues rock band, whereas STP is obviously a jazz rock band; PJ were pretty straightforward in their arrangements and sound, whereas STP had a heavily layered sound.
    I always felt STP were one of those bands underrated by those who only gave their music a brief listen.

    • @davidmcauliffe8692
      @davidmcauliffe8692 22 дні тому +1

      Weiland and Vedder both had those distinct baritone voices. I always thought that Scott enunciated better than Eddie, which turned me off of PJ. What's the point of words if you can't understand them? Scott was finding his voice on the first album. He emulated Vedder and reminded me of Cobain, and finally just did his own thing. I did love his lounge lizard crooning, though. Weiland could sing any style and any era. The any style/any era label could work for them as a band, as well.

      It’s only because Plush was their breakout song and everyone thought it was new PJ because of Scott’s vocals until they saw the video. I was guilty of it myself as a 14 year old. But he hd a much much better range than Vedder. He spoke many times about how singing in the choir growing up helped him. He was truly great.

      @@mariannetuite7411 The SNL, David Spade nonsense, along with garbage from Rolling Stone are to blame.

    Hello from Brazil! Rick, you are the best of UA-cam! Period.
    Abour the In Bloom video: maybe Soundgarden's Pretty Noose also uses all the 12 notes?

    Knew Scott a little back in the day. This is one of my fav STP songs and it influenced one of the 60 Cycle Hum songs I wrote with Troy Van Leeuwen, Dieter Hartmann and our singer Joey. They were awesome to see live.

    Plush from that album is one my favorite songs of all time and one of the first ones I learned to play on bass. Great video as always Rick.
