Food Shortages and Business Bankruptcies in Post Brexit Britain

  • As we hear about the return of Rickets and Scurvy and children having to wear overcoats and gloves in school because of the cold there is more bad news for the UK following #brexit
From 1st February the UK will have to begin imposing #import controls on goods arriving in the UK from the #europeanunion . These have previously been delayed five times since 2021. These controls will result in shortages and price increases. EU suppliers will be less likely to want to send goods to the #uk if this involves uncertain delays. They are also likely to increase prices to cover the increased delays. Gaps on the supermarket shelves are likely to become normal.
More than 500,000 businesses are said to be in financial difficulty and at least 57,000 are expected to close in the coming weeks. The highest #taxes ever, increased cost of living and energy price increases have all contributed to a reduction in spending.

I moved permanently to my home in Portugal in 2013. Life here has just got better and better year after year. We were notified in December that our state owned electricity will increase by 4.1% from January 1st and stay at that price for a year. Bottled gas has fallen from it's high of 21 euros during the pandemic to 13 euros today. Again, state owned. We buy our gas in nearby Spain and move freely across the border daily, to shop, to eat or just to walk the dogs. I look at Britain with absolute horror. A country run solely for the rich, revelling in bigotry. A government deliberately cultivating hatred of 'others', with no care whatsoever for ordinary people. Every single day, I thank God I bought my house in 2003 and made plans to leave the UK from then onwards. Brexit came long after I left and has been a very predictable, but deeply sad disaster for Britain and its standing here in mainland Europe. It breaks my heart to think of what Britain is becoming.

We got out in 1987,had a self employed business each, bought a property for £50,000 over 10yrs, now worth 500,000€. Our life in Andalucia is idyllic, living well but frugally mainly on pensions, we'll never go back. All our mulitcultural friends only talk about Brexit if we mention it, and they are totally befuddled and sad as to why our ex country did it!
      Very happy immigrants we are.

Electric and gas prices in the u.k. are on average 41% higher than on mainland Europe. I agree with everything you have just said. Britain is in a shit state we are becoming poorer year on year. Our health service is in a state of perpetual crisis. We have amongst the lowest state pensions in Europe and one of the highest costs of living. I have by a querk of fate found that because I was born in N.Ireland because of the Dublin Agreement I can and have got an E.U. passport. My daughter lives in Spain because I was born in Belfast she too has an E.U. passport and her own place out there and my wife's British passport is running out too. Her father was born in southern Ireland so she too will soon have an E.U. passport. We applied for our EHIC cards renewal but we can only get a GHIC. The " G " stands for global. So I can now get limited medical cover in the E.U. but here's the joke also in Ascension Island, St Helena and Triston de Kuna. I served 9 years in the RAF but I no longer feel proud of our national flag. The Tories have total trashed our standing in the world and companies are leaving for the E.U. in significant numbers. If it gets much worse I might join you soon. Others in the U.K. without dual nationalship will have to grin and bare it.

My boss just spent three days trying to sort the paperwork out to ship a very large machine into Europe, the machine had to go 4 separate trucks... it was a nightmare, he talked to customs, the truck companies, the agents and the customer... loads of paperwork sent here, there and everywhere, e-mails and phone calls constantly, we still don't know if it's right, we'll find out on Monday. It wasn't even this bad before Schengen! Before brexit I was involved in shipping machinery to the EU, it was a doddle, plus I could jump on a plane and, with my EU passport, go wherever I needed to to sort any issues out, it was so much easier to do business. The company I worked for shut their UK operations down Christmas before last, our American owners shipped all of our machines to Madrid, it was much easier for them.

Brexit is just a slow haemorrhage. It's slow because our Brexiter spivs + liars didn't want us to feel the full damage all at once - that's why the EU was ready on day 1 of Brexit but incompetent Britain still not ready 4 years later. If we wanted to show the world how bloody useless we are, we couldn't have done better than with our Brexit - unplanned, unprepared, inefficient and essentially nasty, selfish and stupid. No wonder Aus, NZ + Canada are queuing up to rip us off - bet they can't believe their luck! Britain wants to turn its back on the best food in the world and import intensively reared and medicated animals from 15000 miles away instead and at a time of increased transport costs and risks - hahaha and bringing veggies 15000 miles past the Houthis - hahahaha....... you really can't get stupider than that 😂🤣😂.
Did you see the new Brexit imports computer system is called BTOM - I guess that's fitting coz Britain is certainly at the BTOM of the pile now and still sinking. Ah well, that's where bigotry, arrogance and ridiculous delusion gets a country.
Britain - not nice to know anymore, steer clear.

Dear Michael, as always, my wife and I enjoy your podcast. Your messages go hand in hand with James O'Brien's book, "How they broke Britain". If I had not lived through the 40 years in Britain, commencing from 1969, I would not have witnessed the gradual decline of Britain starting with the Thatcher years and the equally gradual increase of xenophobia in the 90s. I witnessed the increase of anti EU diatribe in the UK media, notably TIMES and TELEGRAPH following the Maastricht Treaty.
As a former Tory supporter, who became disillusioned I metamorphed to a Tony Blair supporter and finally, disliking Brown thoroughly, I threw my lot in with the SNP, living in Scotland.
By definition I am still centre right (Christian Democrat) and vote the ÖVP in Austria but just like Rory Stewart I despise this right wing bunch masquerading as (British) Conservatives. They are identical to the neo-nazi parties like FPÖ (Austria), AfD (Germany) and all the other proto-fascist parties that poison the political climate in Europe.
I wish you well with your campaign and may you be blessed with success.
    It is bad. Really bad.

I live in what is called the Forth Green Freeport, never asked whether I wanted this (which I do not). Reading the book Silent Coup - How Corporations Overthrew Democracy - this describes how this has been happening in other countries. Everyone needs to be aware of this tactic which takes away from local governments the services they have provided to the population for ages and hands it to private companies. How anyone in government can agree to this and without asking the population first is beyond belief. Private companies will run down what services there are and our most disadvantaged will become even more so.

Hello Michael, I lived in Thailand for 30 years before returning to the UK for family reasons. What a huge mistake I made. UK is 3rd World compared to Thailand. I have had waits in A&E for over 12 hours in agony due to falls and my faulty bladder being blocked. In Thailand I never waited more than an hour and if it were an emergency like I had here minutes.
Google the Khrung Thai bank scandal. Illegal loans were made by that bank and just about the entire board of directors and the chairman were thrown in jail. That would never happen in the UK. In the UK they would get an OBE or a lordship. What a joke the UK is. The UK embassy on Wireless Road used to be on a par with the US embassy now it is in an office block as it was sold off to pay for the aircraft carriers that sit around doing nothing. Enjoy your time there. I recommend you move there or you will go insane if you stay here. As soon as I can I am moving back. I can honestly say that the UK government is more corrupt than the Thai one. Look at Cameron's £10 million gig with Greensill Bank. In the UK you get paid after office in Thailand it's cash as you go. That's the difference. All the best from Broken Britain.

We are a small company based in the United States. We ship products all over the world without difficulties. However, if a customer in UK orders an item via our website, we ask them to reorder It via Amazon so we don't have to fill out the large amount of paperwork that UK requires Recently we sent an order to Scotland and the cost of import duties was literally close to the cost of the product thus doubling the price. This money could have been used productively in so many other ways.

I am a EU citizen living in uk. In all my 39 years I ordered from USA once, but I ordered from EU and inside EU hundreds of times. So I don’t really care how difficult it is for US products to get here ( with food I’m actually glad that the regulations are still in place), but I do miss EU single market where I could send a birthday gift for my sister in Denmark without her paying customs tax. Now I send her money instead, so she spends it in Denmark.

    • @MollyMiaow
      @MollyMiaow 5 місяців тому +6

@crochetomania My comment was not to illustrate problems on our end in the US but to point out: 1. Shipping to UK is more trouble than shipping anywhere else in the world, including to countries like India or Macao making it difficult for UK citizens to participate in the world economy and (2) The UK consumer is personally out-of-pocket for the high cost of their country's trade restrictions. This money would be better spent on UK health services, education, infrastructure etc. . (Although I am willing to deliver in person to your door if the price is right 😊)

Hi Michael, you get your weekly uptick from me but by god this is bleak and un-entertaining stuff.
I so look forward to some day when the news will be happy, a joy to share and a joy to hear. This is a chronicle of things that have been broken rotting, and the things that were not directly broken beginning to collapse into the voids. It is so deeply sad that, in an election year, there isn't such a thing as a main party (Plaid and SNP don't have much of a chance in England) that has the integrity to be honest about this heartbreaking national tragedy.
    Warmest regards.

I had an astonishing argument with an English person recently, during which he actually said: 'Well, Germany has accumulated the same amount of national debt as the UK. $2.7 trillion. You're just as screwed as we are.'
I tried to explain to him that this amount paints a very different picture for each country, since it's 102% of GDP in case of the UK and only 68% of GDP in the case of Germany.
' 2.7 trillion is 2.7 trillion. What difference does it make?' was his response. I was truly stunned. I felt as if I had talked to a child.😂🤦

Not on the mark. What actually happens is that the UK continues it's relative decline against other leading economies, but because it's gradually happening anyway the politicians get away with it. The best measure is one or all:
Working harder for the same pay? Tories say the problem is productivity.
Seek promotion to increase your income? Tories say we lack ambition.
Go abroad and wish you lived there? Tories say we have it better.
Pay more taxes but can't get treated? Tories say they're spending record amounts on the NHS.
Want your children to have a better future? Tories say we can't afford it but all our wind farms are foreign owned.
Wish your voice was actively listened to? The unelected Tory leader says be proud of your democracy.
Want to feel proud of our country? Tories say our values matter but let's bomb Yemen because we know we won't win that one. Again.
