Those who couldn't be bothered to turn up to vote DON'T COUNT, since the ballot does not record nonparticipation. That's blatantly obvious. And since that lot have removed themselves from the democratic process and therefore haven't participated in it, they have no right to whinge and complain, either. The ballot does not give a rat's arse about some idealistic, romantic notion of conscientious objection.
The problem is our FPTP system bins the votes of everyone who does not vote for the winning candidate. Their votes - even if in total they add up to more than the votes gained by the winner , count for nothing. That is why in a democracy - though not in a Tory
- promoted dictatorship , we always have the right to protest and complain., even a duty. There is HM opposition anyway. Even in a demcracy people have the right to think that privatizing things is a good policy. They ought to be disabused of that by now but many are not. But Public v Private, one OR the other, is too simplistic a view in reality.
While most of us struggle, billionaire Ritchie Sunak and his privileged government will all keep toasty warm and eat very well.

My parents inlaw live in Middlesbrough and are ardent Labour voters but seem to like the Tory mayor. It is grim in places but I like the NE. I come from Ireland so it is very different. I wouldn't say people are starving but it is very poor in places. Yet I think there is more danger in parts of Dublin. What shocks me though is the pervassive corruption and homage to 'market forces' ie chancers are given the keys to the castle. The money from Teeside should be going to Teeside not some spiv and his son.

About the freeport story - by the time it all comes to be known, it is too late - they have got away with all that ££££££££££

What they are doing is frightening. Michael has previously gone into some detail about how small businesses have been skewered by Brexit. When UK was in the EU, it was as easy to send goods to Brno, Bydgoszcz or Bucharest as it was to send them to Bolton, Bradford or Birmingham, allowing for p&p.
That's over.
The sure fire fallback was property rental. Small landlords are now being shafted by new rules and regulations virtually forcing them out of business or to sell of any rental properties they own. These are being snapped up by huge foreign based corporations.
Once they've cornered the market, rents will be jacked up astronomically. It will probably take homelessness up to levels seen in Skid Row Los Angeles.
The UK always follows the American example in everything.

There are only 2 routes to joining the Single Market. Membership of the EU or membership of EFTA. The EFTA have already stated that they would not welcome England, so EU is the only viable path.

This current economic situation is the result of decades of cutting taxes for the rich, cutting government assistance such as food security, healthcare, education, and financial stability for the poor and deregulating banks and corporate businesses.

I tried to buy some machinery parts from a French manufacturer the other day and the paperwork required made it totally impractical.
"Extremely shocking" Michael? The understatement of the week!! Very interesting information, as ever, but depressing as hell, and we are in the mire and there's no escaping.
I was watching a talk on the free ports. Regarding mostly Scotland. They said these are not the same as past free ports. They can cover large inland areas. The concern is many are where our power arrives from off shore wind farms. Giving access control to free port owners. In Scotland the local planning law will not apply. So fracking for gas or oil can go ahead. No minimum wage or payment into state pension.
I make the following suggestion:
We in Germany clear out the federal state of "Saarland" and distribute the inhabitants to the East. We then take your people who are supposed to go to Rwanda, at a price of £1.5 million per person. You Brits will save money, the journey will be shorter and we'll make a tidy profit.

Economic reality is that UK economy desperately needs Higher taxes, EU Regulatory allignment, and an increase in migrants. That is economic reality.
I am British but have lived in Hong Kong for nearly 30 years. I can promise you that Chinese are arguably the greediest most tightarse landlords on the planet. In fact, in 30 years of renting I have had ONE decent landlord!
The cost of property in HK is off the scale - even a relatively modest shoebox of an apartment will cost you the best part of £1million. So you would think that most sane people would take care of their investment. Yet Chinese won't spend a single penny on it from the day they buy to the day they die.
So as a tenant, you will be forced to pay astronomic rents but in return tolerate faulty electrics, leaks due to poor rainwater protection, windows that won't open or close properly - and will even drop out because of shoddy workmanship. But just try and get a landlord to take responsibility for these problems!
You will see countless reasonably new prestigious and swanky developments covered in mildew [due to the extremely humid climate] with crumbling plaster and discoloured paintwork - yet they would never think to maintain the building.
In fact, right now in Mainland China there is a major controversy going on* - lifts suddenly plummeting packed with people, bridges collapsing and streets literally subsiding as you walk along them - causing many deaths and serious injuries. The reason? Lack of maintenance [or total neglect].
* Of course, you won't see any of these things in the Western media due to the CCP's blanket banning of anything remotely negative about China. It's only through external news agencies and independent vloggers that we have heard anything at all about this.
In Chinese culture they do not believe in spending money [on anything - especially housing] except on the initial purchase. So, a building can be 50 even 100 years old, practically collapsing but throughout its entire lifetime it has probably never once been repainted or renovated.
The same applies when YOU buy something. If it breaks or stops working - chances are the place you bought it from will completely refuse to replace it or refund your money, [again in Chinese culture - once you have a bought a product etc - it immediately becomes YOUR responsibility it you have a problem with it!]
These people should NOT be allowed to own large tracts of property in the UK - or should be forced to deposit some sort of bond that can be used on maintenance etc. And don't think that this is racist or unfair.
Landlords in HK have unlimited power and will run FBI standard 'checks' on potential tenants! [one landlord I had even called my boss directly to ask what my salary was, how long I had worked there and whether I was a 'reliable' payer/person!]
