Lex was spot on about the shoulder movement thing. I’ve found that some metal songs have the ability to take control of your body and you just end up moving your entire upper half without meaning too. I love when I get THAT into a song.
Oh yeah, and Gojira does it more than any other band for me. When I hear the last breakdown in Backbone or the first breakdown in Adoration For None, I don't care if I'm at a funeral, I don't care if I'm at MY funeral, I've gotta headbang.
@@matthewgodding777 And, everything is derivative. Including your idols. This is not an opinion, it’s a fact. So yeah, Gojira has many influences, and they go out of their way to name them, and pay homage to them. All hail Mighty Gojira and all of the artists they built upon!
Gojira really rules! For me as someone that's been listening to metal for more then 30 years and was kind of stuck in older bands Gojira was the real next evolution of metal. You can hear their foundation lies in older metal like Metallica and Sepultura but they have their own sound, one of the best drummers around and the most brutal innovating guitar riffs. Toobad for Lex they dont do real blitzing guitarsolo's but more then make up for in breakdowns and transitions in their complex music. Love them, please do more.
Indeed, when this album released it utterly shifted my entire perspective on what Metal could be and where it could take you. To this day it remains my favorite of their releases.
The most appropriate name for a song that was ever created. That riff could crack an entire planet in half. A brilliant masterpiece, along with Flying Whales.
I love that Lex is just feelin it. I couldn't tell you the lyrics to most of the songs that hit me the hardest but they make me want to move and just make this visceral connection that can't be explained.
5:51 she's describing that adrenaline rush Gojira's music brings, that feeling of mighty love and power, Joe's righteous anger towards the vacuity of this world. Powerful musicians can do powerful things, especially if you can dream of it. Every riff has an emotion Joe tries to capture, he's such an amazing musician and in my opinion one of the greatest front man of all time.
She explained it perfectly, but he's always so inside his own head, I'm afraid he's never gonna feel that. I get it's a reaction channel, but I wish he would feel the music more. Especially the metal.
@@cginsane22 She actually described so well what Joe tries to accomplish with his music, and if she were at a show, that jolt she had would've created a feeling to want to move and have fun. Instead she was kind of met with an indifference to it, those people at shows that kind of just stand around, and don't understand what the music is about.
@@fromthesky1050 Just saying: Don't judge people based on how they move / react at concerts. You have no clue what's going on inside them. People react differently to music. I usually "just stand around" at concerts. That doesn't mean I'm not into it.
Gojira is an amazing band. They actually have fliers and stuff in their merch tables when they tour to teach people about saving the planet. They are all about saving the earth and looking inside to solve the worlds problems. I actually got to hang out with them back stage before and they were super cool, all of them dont even smoke weed, they are clean and vegetarian taking good care of their mind body and soul.
This was the first time I saw Lex doing what I call "vibrating headbanging." That's when the beat is so fast that you find yourself shaking your head back and forth really fast as you're simultaneously headbanging up and down at a slightly slower speed. Please don't ask for a better explanation. That's the best way I can explain it lol.
As a teenager I used to have extreme episodes of sleep paralysis & night terrors. Sometimes I saw evil black human shadows/shapes moving around. A couple of times I heard an electric crackling noise that escalated in volume to the point were electric spheres appeared out of nowhere and "exploded" with a loud electric bang. I also felt the presence of super dark & evil spirits sometimes. One time a spirit flew in circles by the celling, going faster and faster until it flew right through my chest. I was always pressed down my bed so I couldn´t move or scream no matter how hard I tried. No wonder I was a mess as a teenager =)
This is one of the greatest concept albums ever created. Brad hit it right on the nose. This albums concept is mostly, about the bands drug induced astral travel. Flying Whales should be up next,in your Gojira reactions.
When Gojira step foot on a festival - they take over it! Whatever you like you can listen from them, they are very technical, the drummer is a living legend. "The gift of guilt", "The Cell", "Where dragons dwell","Pray","Toxic garbage island", "Amazonia" pretty much every song of theirs is art.
I'm so glad you're moving on to some "heavier" metal... and I love seeing you Lex loving and understanding it and also love your confusion Brad and how you're analysing it all. It's beautiful! If I may recommend some bands/songs you definitely should do in the future... I can with all of my hearth recommend the bands -Opeth(Swedish): Ghost of Perdition. Master's Apprentice, The Grand Conjuring, Drapery Falls (they have a long and wast list of songs and most of them are masterpieces! The genre they are playing(in the older days) would be progressive death metal) I'm sure you both would love them! Meshuggah(Swedish): Bleed, Clockworks and one of my favourite songs I Am Colossus. The genre is a sub-genre of death metal called Djent. Brad, you would be very confused by it, and when you think you have the beat... think again. And Lex i think you will get it and feel it. But it can be a very hard listening the first time(especially with Bleed and Clockworks) but it's a trip and I love it! If you wanna do my own favorite genre(Black Metal) I'll recommend some older Dimmu Borgir(Norwegian), I started with the song Puritainia so I recommend that for you aswell... and one of my favorite bands right now is Sunken((Danish)Atmospheric Black Metal) do Departure, its beautiful! Time and signature changes without disrupting the flow of the song. Thought provoking and poignant lyrics delivered with ferocity. The genius of Gojira. I'm in my 50's and have been listening to these guys ever since they debuted as Godzilla. Here's some suggestions: Lizard Skin, Born in Winter, L'Enfant Sauvage, Toxic Garbage Island (Live), and the greatest love song ever composed, simply titled, Love. Make sure you have a bowl next to you in order to collect your melting brain.
Nice insight Brad. Loved the dance analysis, Lex. My wife, who is a beautiful strong black woman with almost as much rhythm as me, explained why she can listen to artists like Gojira, Velvet Acid Christ, Skinny Puppy, Ministry and the like, and dance to it. It's not always about finding a proper rhythm or song structure, but more about finding your personal groove and feel and interpretation. She is a lot smarter than me.... pro tip, the beat, or "pulse" never change, they just play around it. Once you learn to catch the pulse even tho they play around it, that's whn you learn to appreciate the "abruptness"
Well, about that shoulder thing... It's great you experienced it. I feel like it's usually why metalheads headbang :) You just get into the song and merge with the rythm and the energy, it carries you and you go with it. Gojira is a pretty good band to experience that, some of their songs are really heavy and you can get easily carried away and lost in the beat ; Backbone from the same album comes to mind, I always felt this song a lot. I get what Lex is saying the music drives you to move in certain ways especially if you just accept it. The lyrics actually remind me of the book Starmaker by Olaf Stapledon in which the narrator leaves his body and travels the universe making contact with other civilisations and eventually the Starmaker (god) though the song doesn't go that far into the story. Awesome song and you 2 are becoming my favourite reactors with Lex's feel for the music Brad's lyric analysis it's always entertaining

Cant emphasize this enough…. This is one of the Heaviest and cleanest sounding bands live. Touring more in US now but a French band and spend a lot of time in EU… but if you have to pick one show…. They make a strong case…. Try not to catch a vibe…. ;)
Gojira is awesome live
