The drummer is a beast! I'm more into jazz, but I can respect their amazing talents! Great reaction!

The drummer, Mario, went to a fairly prestigeous jazz drum academy when he was a teen. Might explain why you vibe with the music. Gojira themselves have said that a lot of their songs are built around his drum patterns.

There is alot of jazz but inspiration in alot of metal especially technical death metal. I wouldn’t expect you to like it but its fun knowing the spread jazz has lol

Don’t sweat it, Metal isn’t for everyone. But there are Gojira songs I think you could dig. Silvera and Where Dragons Dwell might be more your speed.

Mario duplantier is a killer! Check remembrance from the link Alive. The outro is oustanding.

I think there is a special moment for everyone when one gets into a new sound. You'll listen to a genre that isnt really for you a hundred times before it catches on. You can't force it though. I think something just switches eventually, that's what happend to me with metal and funnily enough hyperpop and dreampop. Maybe in a few years you will return to a song like this and get into the groove :) if you want just the drumming I'd recommend checking out the dudes Drums solos. He makes one each year and it really shows why he is regarded as one of the most technical and overall best drummers in the genre. Dudes name is Mario Duplantier if that interests you :) Cheers buddy!

Honestly i felt the exact same way getting into extreme metal. There was some really cool catchy riffs and drum patterns i was picking up on but the heavier parts were less enjoyable. And the transitions were some of my favourite parts. After alot more listening the heavier parts make alot more sense. They are very often used to build up tension into the transitions and groovy catchy riffs. Feels like more of a payoff than just handing you the catchy part if you feel my drift

The most interesting part of this band is the lyrics are always wholesome, about preserving earth and overcoming all your inhibitions. This song is about love, itself, being the heaviest matter of the universe that crosses all of space and time.
Starting to head bob without even noticing lol. You spot the grooves fast.

Mario is god tier drummer. Gojira is unbelievable but if you like drumming your going to get a lot heavier with Lorna shore to the hellfire. Austin Archie the drummer is a robot or something

Check out the songs "Silvera" or "Amazonia" by this band, more straight ahead. This is one of their heaviest & most complex songs lol.

Don't sweat it about not being used to it dude. It's definitely a process of training your ears. When I was a teen and just getting into metal I couldn't even fathom genuinely enjoying anything that went harder than, like, Metallica (and even then, I preferred their more melodic tracks) and nowadays 95% of the metal I listen to falls into different subgenres of death metal lol. A lot of my appreciation for extreme vocals (which were the primary hurdle for me) came thanks to bands like Gojira (Joe was one of the first death metal vocalists to scream/growl in pitch, which is pretty much a staple of metalcore singers today), Opeth (the constant juxtoposition of melodic clean singing and screams) and some melodeath bands like In Flames, Soilwork, Dark Tranquility. 90s/00s nu metal also had some bands that mixed in screams every now and then (Linkin Park, Slipknot etc) and made it more palatable to the casual metal fan.

First time I heard them over ten years ago I shut off and said no thanks. When I dug into Metal on my own about six years ago and fell totally in love with the genre with the added regret of having wasted so many decades it was the music and musicianship that got to me first. Then came to love all the kinds of growling screaming etc. Joe Duplantier, the singer guitarist has a particular style of singing between the Death growl and yelling/singing. His brother on drums is more than fast he does polyrhythms and switchups like few others. Has a few solos on his youtube chanel.

Gojira are EPIC! As far as live set performances I saw them at bloodstock open air and their light show was so insane I thought I was gonna have an epileptic fit (spoiler I don’t have epilepsy 😂)

Wil, you have to listen at least once to "occult medecine" from yyrkoon, an other french death metal band (the entire album but specially "occult medecine" track). They deserves some attention and Dirk verbeuren on drums it's something to see!

I have to agree, for certain songs. This is one of them. Joe’s voice isn’t at it’s peak for this show, so the studio version is worth a listen in your free time.

Helene here….Interesting……I compare this to hard rock like Zeppelin, with all it’s light and shade……This is the side of metal that I can’t relate to…..it’s, to me, one long testosterone growl/scream that never lets up and never gives you a chance to breath. If I were a young, 20 year old dude, I might love it.

Also yeah the studio version was a bit better, gojira are a nice listen but are sort of mediocre after the luster wears off, as is the issue with lots of modern metal

I've listened to Gojira across all albums for the better part of 6 years straight but okay. I've never heard any band that can technically replicate what Gojira does.
