This is right before he got clean from coke. You can tell his voice worn out from all the years of hard living. Luckily he got clean and stayed clean the rest of his life and got his voice back. Much love and respect for Waylon

We belong to that lucky generation who have really enjoyed great country music in our lives. RIP Waylon, who left this world too soon.

Waylon always had a real tight BAND.Afterall he had been a Session man himself back as early a Buddy Holly DAYS-

      John Jeffrey -
      Just a tiny correction!
I don't think Waylon was ever truly a "session" man. I believe the only time he backed up anyone was when he played bass for Buddy Holly during that ill-fated Winter Dance party tour in 1959, but that was only because Holly & the Crickets were in the middle of some sort of dispute, and they had to back out of the tour almost at the last minute, so Holly had to find replacement musicians.
Waylon & Buddy Holly were good friends, and Holly was mentoring Waylon, trying to help him get his career started.
He thought enough of Waylon that, just prior to the deadly tour, Buddy had produced & payed for the recording session - even flying in tenor sax player King Curtis to contribute to the recording - that culminated in the production of Waylon's very first single, a nifty little song called "Jolie Blon." (It went nowhere, chart wise, but it was a start).
When the Crickets backed out of the tour, Buddy came to Waylon to hire him as one of the Cricket replacements - just for that one tour. Buddy came by to see him, tossed him a bass guitar (an instrument Waylon had never played in his life) and told him to learn the songs to be played on the tour, which was to begin in just a few weeks.
Waylon did learn the songs with remarkable speed, and a short time later, they all embarked on the Winter Dance Party tour of the frigid upper Midwest.
To the best of my knowledge, that was the only time Waylon ever played backup for any other musician, except perhaps as a one-off favor.
That's the way Waylon tells it in his autobiography and in various other places!
I'm so glad you're a fan of Waylon Jennings' music! He was a unique & remarkable talent and a fascinating man.

More like the "Common Cocaine" bug. This show was about 10 months before he quit drugs for good. It's amazing how much and how fast he recovered his voice. By 1986 he was starting to sound like himself again. Remarkable guy!

There were several albums during that period that were pretty rough. The worst was the Take It To The Limit. Cocane and 6 packs of cigarettes' had taken their toll. He said on stage he had a cold but if you listen to albums from then, the Dukes Of Hazzard narations from them and other concerts, you get a different story. Yes his voice was trashed, but waylon at his worst was still better than most at their best.

I really believe that Waylon took such pride in his singing, he was a true interpreter of song, a troubadour, that he had to do something or he was going to lose his first love. He gave up the cocaine first and then the cigarettes and he did get most of his voice back.
