I saw Johnny Cash in NYC in 1978 when I was 19 he was standing in front of a building with another guy - I asked him for an autograph and he asked me what I’d do with it … I was so nervous because he was my all time favorite singer - Anyway, he knew I was nervous and started kidding around with me making me feel comfortable - He was a super nice, very big guy and shook my hand telling me to “be careful this city can be a dangerous place” - Amazing man his autograph still hangs on my wall.
Wow, cool,what a memory.👍
21 years old and Waylon is by far my favorite artist ever
God Bless u Sir or Ma'am

Totally agree with you, Waylon was always my American Country music singer of all times, l am lrish myself but I appreciate great Country music singing and Waylon Jennings could sing any song. ELIZABETH in SCOTLAND ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
These legends owned their addictions, I can very much respect that. RIP Waylon and Johnny.
If you learn anything from watching these legends it’s that their pure honesty makes them so endearing. Truly amazing men.
😂🎉 BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST 🙏
I never realized till just now what a legend Johnny Cash was. Such a giant of a man but still so humble and approachable. He was one of the all time greats.
He was larger than life since I heard of him in the 60's. Believe he's the only country artist in the RnR HOF.
He broke down a huge barrier between country and rock.
He made it okay to like both.
He defies genre. He's country. He's rock & roll. He's folk. He's music. And he's one of the few artists who owned every single song he covered. Rusty Cage is one of my favorite Soundgarden songs but Johnny and the Heartbreakers killed it. Chris played it Johnny's way at his solo shows.
Johnny Cash was and still is a legend. He had everything. Good looks, a great voice and a desire to entertain us. He came along and rocked the world.
@@jenkins80526 And he brought the cookies back.
How in the world would anyone give this a dislike you got two of the greatest performers that ever lived
Love these guys, wish I could have been there to see them ! Country music will never be the same !
Must a been a slip of the thumb. 😅 thats what she said too
George asked "who's gonna fill their shoes?" the answer was absolutely no one. Country doesn't even exist any more.
Try on Tyler Childers, sturgill Simpson, Hayes Carll. There's probably more good country than ever, it is just buried by an ever-deepening layer of crap
Yep, thankfully they left us with endless hits
You just ain't heard the good stuff
I’m not entirely sure if “REAL” COUNTRY is gone, dead, or whatever, BUT … I personally think that all those old country gentlemen have been “MENTORS” for all the modern performers today, whether or not they know it or not‼️♥️M
Empty shoes leave a place for someone else to walk on with those shoes. There’s artist taking those steps , just got to pay attention
Waylon was charming. I miss this show so much. A better time.
Man wish these guys were around today...........So glad their songs are.
I met Waylon in 1982. It was an outdoor event. A security guard asked me if I wanted to see where his bus would arrive? I said, "sure." He took me where these bushes were with a table. The spot was obscure. Sure enough Waylon's bus pulled in & out he came between the bushes. A crowd started to gather. He walked up to me & with his hand extended he said, "Hi there little girl (I was 25 years old), how are you?" I shook his hand, trying to think of something intelligent to say but all that came out was; " I'm fine thank you Mr. Jennings. " Then he tipped his hat & said; "The name's Waylon." From that day on whenever I have been addressed by my last name, I say; " The name's Peggy. " It was a humbling experience. I'm no better than he is was my thought. He was very respectful & kind. Although, it was moment in time it's great memory. Thank you Waylon. Godspeed to you & Johnny & June Cash. 🙏💞🙏
Thanks for sharing. Sounds very nice to have met such a legend. Nice memory🤩 (pardon my poor english, i’m from Norway)
Ms. Peggy, that is one fine story, thank you, Steve
That was an awesome story and I am so jealous lol. i'm 53 and i remember when i was around 16 playing my drum sticks on my dresser to the dukes of hazzard theme song. I was a hugh country music kid even tho i came from a city in NJ well when i finally seen a video of waylon singing the dukes song i was so blown away!!! all these years that was his hand playing the guitar lmao... well since then i was a fan, waylon and willie cant get any better! thanks! walt
@Proud Straight White Christian Conservative ....Yes, they are wonderful. I was a LOT star struck! June, Johnny, & Waylon are sadly missed. TY for commenting.💝
@@stennilsen9584 .....Your English is just fine. It's a great memory. Thank you very much!💝
I had the pleasure of meeting Johnny Cash at the Orange County Fair, in the early 90's I was working security and after the show Johnny Cash invited everyone to eat. It was like a Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, so much food, and I couldn't believe it. The coolest guy, man, entertainer, I have met a lot of singers, entertainers ,actors, celebrities, and some I forgot, but all never forget this Man, he had a heart of gold! Me, I was raised by a USMC, and ive learned a lot from my father, and I learned something from this great man! Thank You R.I.P.
Hell yeah OC Fair
No one like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristopherson....they were the real deal always....talent
Holy Hell! I love these guys ... and WAY before my "time!"
Awesome interview
When I was 12 year old my bestfriends dad, (Joel) was dying of cancer (1979). He loved Waylon Jennings. Waylon heard about Joel Jackson (his biggest fan) it was in the local paper. Waylon had both his tour buses drive to Raleigh. He parked one in front of my house, and the other in front of Joel's house. He sat with Joel for about an hour. Joel placed away a few hours later. My mother wouldn't let me go meet him. 10 years later I met him and Jesse Colter. The most humble famous people I've ever met😇
Jerry Lee Kewis was nice too😊
Michael Jordan was very nice too. Waylon and Jesse were so kind and genuine✌💙
🤗🤗🤗😊😊😊Forever in our heart
Great outlook on people friend.
Love both Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash. Waylon is really a handsome man.
Wasn't he, though. Waylon wasn't classicly handsome, but there was just something so magnetic about him that my knees get weak at the mere sight of him........
@@pageribe2399 Ruggedly handsome!
I felt a bit bad thinking the same, hes older than my parents, but gosh he was gorgeous. He had the cheeky naughty boy personality with a handsome face, and quite tall too. Very attractive man in every sense. Its not surprising that he had many women in his younger years. Jessi certainly was one heck of a woman.
When waylon walked out to sing with Johnny that was straight chills. Just two larger than life people that had so much influence on music.
Did you have snacks?

Absolutely, I go back to this song when I need a lift.
The way they sang the last chorus together with looks that only old friends can manage, just honesty.
Such feeling in those simple lines of Kris Kristofferson.
True facts, I have truely shed a year there. Lost treasures, that era,😔🎶🎶❤️🍀✌️

Oh, this time, thier is a great segment, where you can see how good a talent, David, Letterman's front man, Paul, his own nightly piano 🎹, player, who u heard from Loud and clear, u never know what a real talented guy he was until he was was expected to get a chance to show case his own personal talent with the likes of this performer, Waylon , Jennings 😉

Waylon’s charm was natural. He was a real cool card.
Yeah, those ex-cons tend to be that way. Haha.
Lame but nessisary
cool cat, is the expression
I am ashamed to say I had forgotten just how cool he was. Very likable guy.
@@TheShoottheradio Friend, I agree. Do you think they developed their persona because it helped them survive?
I watched a video of an interview with his wife Jesse and a comment she said about him I will always remember. She said, " no matter who's song he sings, he Waylonizes it." He sure did have an incredible voice.
Yea that nails it.
That’s perfect. He’s probably the coolest looking and sounding human of all time. The DUDE just expels “cool” from everywhere. He and Merle were my dad’s favorite singers. And I was so into being a cowboy growing up. These guys were the soundtrack to my childhood. I remember a few of these interviews. So thankful to live in an age where I can go back and watch this stuff at will.
Seeing this makes me happy I grew up in a different time. And weep for the world we lose as we get older. “I’ll carry off a little darkness on my back, ‘til things get brighter, I’m the Man in black.” Miss all our fallen heroes.
I actually very like your thumbnail, have an eye on Gul Dukat! 👏😂
they just remind of good people...unpretentious
heard a story where they had a meeting of sorts and the phone rang and June talked for a good while and when they asked 'who was that? ...she answered ... it was a wrong number.'
The modern world has made people more and more rotten

I’m mostly a rocker but I appreciate good music, no matter the genre. It’s just like Johnny said “music is for everybody.”
At 22:00 , it’s easy to tell that Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings are truly happy to see each other and consider it a pleasure and privilege to sing with each other. Respect is overflowing. Two legends in their own right. Can only imagine the late nights drinking and singing.
Look up "tales from the tour bus"

I've never been a big fan of country music, I'm a lifelong metal head, but, I absolutely LOVE Waylon and Johnny. Could listen to them all day.
Same here
I'm with you on that. I had a couple Waylon Jennings' albums nestled between my Black Sabbath and Led Zep.

That’s like someone saying, “I dont like metal but I know who metallica and slayer are!” Waylon and Johnny transcended country and became American pop culture.
This has to be the most rock and roll in country music. Whatever David Letterman show, I have ever seen in my life! This is awesome. Great music! God bless you all!
I love it when Johnny and Waylon just started having a conversation and they are so natural and real. They don't make em like this anymore.

Waylon is buried in Mesa cemetary near my mom and dad I see him every time I go see them
Wow
He's not buried in Texas?
Kristina Omalley, Waylon is buried in the Mesa, Arizona cemetery. He and his wife of 33 years, Jessi Colter, had moved from Nashville, Tennessee to the Mesa, Arizona area several years before Waylon’s death in 2002. Jessi still resides there.
Pardon my ignorance but how old was Waylon when he passed away? Thank you kindly.
Also, where is Waylon actually buried at?
I believe that fantastic group THE HIGHWAY MEN was one of the BEST 'boy bands' to have graced a stage. Each personality was an integral part of the collection. As a showcase for each singer it couldn't have been better. I miss them all. ❤ 😢
@Orrin Terry
????? Ok. MAN band. Better yet
......how about Geezer Group. I loved them all. Kris is still with us and, imo, still handsome.
@Orrin Terry
What passes as popular 'music' now a days is very scary. No soul, no stories, no artistry and, imo, no talent.
I worry about our world in the hands of the youngins who listen to that crap.
Well at least WE had it good. So many talented ppl are deceased and Joan Baez and Elton John are ( will be ) retiring.
Thank God for CDs and UA-cam. Have fun enjoying our GOOD music. ✌ & ❤.

Ever. It sucks
I sure miss Waylon and Johnny.... True country singers.
What a couple of legitimate musical legends. Real people from the country singing music about their lives in their own unique and creative ways. No fake ass southern accents and drinking beer on a tailgate song. Smart and badass DUDES, and June’s performance was absolutely lovely. Dave was great on this show. Always so funny and welcoming to all kinds of guests. I’d think Paul and his kickass band probably had a hand in getting such musical guest on the show. Thanks for this video. It brings back a ton of great memories of a couple of grown ass men that this country could use about now. Rest easy to all of those who have moved on.
The fact that they're candid about their drug use says everything about their character.
God that is still rare and was even rarer at that time for someone to open up and speak so honestly and directly about their drug use. Johnny Cash was the real deal.
In the liner notes of the album "Waymore's Blues II", producer Don Was said Waylon was the only person he' ever met who could say "I was on tour one time with Buddy, Elvis and John..." and have every word it of it be true.
Wow that’s some guest line up for a talk show. Nothing compares now. Icons
Legends for sure. Nobody since has even come close....
These men are True Legends..when your a kid you don't realize things..but once you grow up and become a man you will find yourself listening to their music and loving it.. they will live in our hearts forever
Waylon walks on and starts singing harmony and the song just gets better.
I got a six and eight year old running around past their bedtimes while this is playing. Like when I was their age at grandmas house.
I'm a Rock and Jazz person, but I have nothing but respect for Johnny Cash and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Waylon. Had a couple Waylon Jennings ' album.
So long a time since I heard this song Don't take your guns to town. Still good advice today
If only we had some genuine down to earth people on late night TV like this . Sad how we have slipped into the Abyss.
When I was 14 (a very long time ago) I babysat for a woman who worked in a bar called the Palomino in North Hollywood. Johnny Cash had a gig there and I begged her to sneak me in to see him. I have been to 200+ concerts in my life but seeing Johnny Cash in that small place was truly the highlight of my life!
That's very, very cool!
I saw Johnny’s last show in sf at the Fillmore in 1994. One of the best shows I ever saw. June came out and played about 4 songs.
That's awesome, I never saw Johnny but have seen many country artists, including Hank Jr., Brad Paisley, Terri Clark among others
...but my highlight was seeing
Merle Haggard, he was so honed and perfectly polished as a musician that listening to him live was like listening to one of his CD's.
No mistakes, no fumbles and in perfect pitch. So smooth.
We here in Canada had a bar and tavern called the palomino to as well ad opry north
My grandmother was a head bar maid / bar manager by todays terms in a huge night club back in the road house days in the 70's they had national acts about once a month. Great bands every Friday and Saturday night but the big guys once a month. I met Gary Pucket there. the Jaggerz right after their big hit The Rapper, the Rascals and a few other notables. I went in the after noon with her to get it ready and they were bringing their gear in and sound checking. I got to meet them all in owners office on a very personal level. I wanted to play a guitar and be a rock star. lol they did give me some good advice and i had a lot of fun playing music in the bars and roadhouses until I was close to 40 and i also worked in show business as a stage technician. eventually i was making a living mixing sound and things like that so I gave up playing music on the weekends because I really had no choice as i had to choose between one or the other. as music happens on the weekends for the most part. those were great days. I got gig mixing sound every Saturday night on a live radio broadcast in a 2300 seat theatre. I was knocking down some cash as there were lots of other shows there also on the other days. Been doing it all my life. show business is great business but right now this damn cornona virus covid 19 has killed live shows as well as a lot of people. i never thought i would see the day the music died. But I damn sure am living it right now.
Gosh I could watch Waylon 24 7 and never get bored. Thank you for sharing. RIP Waylon!
Halfway through you see the vitality both Waylon and Johnny got from sobriety. As they aged they looked serene and truly enjoying life.
Cash said on his Johnny Cash Show that "Waylon's a good friend and if he likes you, hell let you know it.....If he don't like you, he'll let you know that too"
That was Hoss to a T
That first interview with Cash was as perfect as it could be. One of Dave's top interviews for sure. "Were there snacks?" was classic.
That was a classic from Letterman.
Can you imagine the time Johnny was describing, absolutely amazing.
Waylon Jennings was such a legend
Truly. Met him once my Dad was a huge fan and took us to a concert in Omaha. Waylon kept glancing at Dad and a stage hand came out at the end and asked us to come backstage..we got to meet him because he said he thought Dad was George Jones (this happened to Dad a lot) and then as they got to talking, my Dad's reply to the mistaken identity was always "no but I do have a thing for Tammy Wynette" Waylon kept asking Dad if he sang because Dad had a deep, gravelly voice that made you take notice when he spoke. Dad never sang, but they did have a few drinks together and we had pics taken. I was about 7 and got to sit on Waylon's knee. A special memory. Dad is gone now but when I listen to Waylon I hear my Dad's voice again.😊
"That was a period in my life when the only person that would talk to me was the Lord and the only woman who would have me was Betty Ford."

For anybody that grew up before computers and smartphones or even cable there was definitely some boredom and loneliness, but also time for self reflection and soul building. We’re missing that today in fact it’s being weaned right out of American society. Money is king. It’s sad. These guys definitely were not about the money. The difference in Waylon between the first appearance and the second is huge. Knowing what it feels like to be deep in the shit, desperate, denying it and out of control, and then to be sober, that feeling when you get your clarity and energy back is worth every pain you go through to get there.
Also noticeable in Richard Pryor when he got sober in the 1980s.
I'm not anti-drug, but I can say with authority that they can sneak up on you and become your life without notice.
In 1988 I had the pleasure of introducing Waylon in Spokane Wa. ( I was the morning man d.j. ) His wife was there ,Jessi Colter , she sang her huge hit. "I'm not Lisa "My name is Julie ...
Back stage ,hob nobbing , and I always got 8 by 10 s of every country star of that period .! So I put my arm around Waylon's wife. ,Getting ready for the pic ..
I GOT A LOOK THAT WENT RIGHT THREW ME. FROM WAYLON !! DAMM
NEVER WILL FORGET IT. ODD. ...THATS MY STORY. ABOUT THE MAN.

Take over every aspect of your life.
You described being "deep in the shit" and all that goes with it, exactly how it is! Im so greatful to have all that far behind me.
So true man. Same with booze. Happy I’m starting to get my shit together!
Got that right! I was a 15 year heroin addict; now clean for 21 years! Wasn't easy! All I can say is God had me in His hand!
I saw Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan at a concert they had together. First Willie played, then Bob played. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
I saw bob Dylan open for Paul Simon, and between sets, they sang acoustic Johnny Cash songs. It was unreal!
Part of an era that is gone. Performers like Johnny Cash were available to their fans in a way that you don't see anymore.
These clips together are easily one of the very best things I've ever watched on UA-cam. Such character, such talent, such humanity.... "Ain't that just like a human? Here comes that rainbow again." Precisely.
Miss these guys. Celebrate Willie and Kris while they're with us! Honky-Tonk Heroes and Highwaymen for sure.

I've never heard that song. But it awesome
I've always liked Waylon.
Yes, Kris 86 and Willie now 89 I believe. Loretta Lynn made it to 90, but it was still hard to let her go.
Glad we have access to the legends of the past. I grew up listening to these guys and enjoy sharing the videos with my grandkids.
Yes, keep these talented legends alive through your grandchildren. 🎸🎼🙏❤️
