Being a self-employed freelance advertising photographer, let's just say it's a life of feast and famine. To make ends meet I have done more than a few stagehand gigs. I did a ZZ gig a few years ago and as we worked the load out after the show, the band's tour buses were idling in the parking lot. When we finished our work at 4am and closed the doors on the the last semi at the dock, a number of us were standing around BSing, and here comes Billy Gibbons shuffling across the parking lot in a silk smoking jacket (robe) and slippers and wearing that hat. He extends a hand, shaking our hands every one and thanking us for making his job possible. The only time I have ever had that happen, though I have to say that another band of the nicest guys I ever met was Iron Maiden. The same down to earth unpretentiousness. Cheers

My mom was the cleaning lady at a villa Iron Maiden stayed in when they did a gig in the Algarve back in '93. She was absolutely amazed at how nice, polite and clean they were and became a lifelong fan (she was already 45 at the time and obviously grew up listening to Sinatra, Bennett, Aznavour, etc. so metal was definitely not her thing). She best remembers Janick Gers and Nicko being consummate gentlemen and always talked about how clean and beautiful their hair was 😁.

@@sandroleandro2493 A friend of mine was a hotel housekeeper back in the early 90s, and she knocked on a door to change the sheets, and Kevin Dubrow answered the door, with the rest of Quiet Riot standing in the room behind him. She recognized him and went total fangirl, and they invited her in, and they wound up hanging out all afternoon. She said they were really nice guys.
But the best story I ever heard, second hand, was a musician friend of mine whose mom, who knew nothing about rock, came home one day and told my friend she'd wound up at lunch with one of her office's clients. She said, "I had lunch with the nicest man today. It turned out he's a musician too, he's in a rock band. Have you ever heard of a singer called Robert Plant?"

Crazy to think about how if 1 thing in time was changed like if Willie was on his way to that farmer to buy that Les Paul and his car got a flat tire and the farmer ended up selling the guitar to another guy then everything that was created by ZZ Top might not of existed. Any number of things could of changed the course of fate for the bearded boys that day and we wouldn't of had the great music by one of the best bands in the world. You know I call that farmer and Willie's interaction and exchange of money for that Les Paul guitar? I call that gate my friends.

Every electric musician from guitar, bass, mandolins, etc., you all owe this man and HUGE bunch of gratitude. If you play and never heard of him, put away what you're doing and look Les Paul up. I'm not saying you will be a better musician, but I'm positive you will have more appreciation for him and the instruments you play.
If you are just a fan of music and all it's different genres, and never heard of this man, pull your head out of the sand and educate yourself about this genius. It doesn't matter what kind of music you listen too.

I am sure that you are correct. Some people seem to be thinking that Les Paul was just a partially out of it senior citizen at the time this occurred and that he had no idea whom he was speaking with. I am virtually sure he knew who Gibbons was. He is asking very good questions that draw Mr. Gibbons out and give him an opportunity to reveal interesting facts to his owns fans. And I think Gibbon probably appreciated such a personalized interview. Also, Les Paul did not challenge him on his statement "I wrote a thing called 'How High the Moon.' It was covered by a guy who invented a guitar or something... " other than to say "You did...?" I am not sure what Gibbons was getting at with that statement but he obviously was not the composer of the classic that Les Paul highlighted on television in 1951 (Gibbons was two years old at the time). Both of them are music legends and it was amazing to see them interacting together like that.

You have to remember, Les was born in 1915....some of these guys he was playing with we regard as legends....but Les had no idea who they are. He wasn't familiar with them or their music because he came up in a different time. The cool thing is, you can tell he has a genuine interest in who are they, where they are from, when did they start playing, how many guys in the band....and he wants to hear them play his creation. Notice he tried several time to get Billy to cut loose....and The Reverend, always the gentleman, wanted to keep it about Les and not himself. ZZ Top has been together and touring for 50 years....let that sink in. Truly one of the greatest American rock bands in history. Great to see two legends get together before Les passed.
