The Alien itself was a cameo on the movie. Also, the hunted aspect of the series was removed, in order to "empower" some random character no one cared for. She is not Ripley and she is not even trying to be.
I enjoy you guy's take on the movie. I personally thought it was an okay movie, but I've had many talks with people about how they believe that it is the worst trash ever. The movie aint complete trash, what destroyed it for me was the explanation of aliens origins. This alone makes me want to pretend this shit never existed.
David had to base his research on something. He was alone on the Engineer homeworld for a very long time, and he had access to all their stuff since he killed them all. I'm pretty sure he was just recreating experiements the Engineers did in the past. We know the ship in Alien had crashed there LONG before Prometheus, let alone this movie. I don't think David created the Xenomorphs. I think he recreated them.
It's pretty much makes it that David did create this breed of Xenomorphs but not the entire species. It would retcon the fact we saw a mural in Prometheus which had an alien on it
And even thinking back on it more, we know the engineer DNA is a 100% match with human DNA, and that the mural on the ship was over 2000 years old. This pretty much implies that the engineers know what happens when a facehugger impregnates an engineer, and it will most likely look like the original Alien xenomorph. You guys are implying that David created the facehuggers, and there's absolutely nothing to back this up. He most likely discovered a method to create and foster the eggs, and knows that the ultimate creation is a Xenomorph+human hybrid.
Man, this is the reason why James is a fucking lovable guy. He knows the movie is pretty shitty but he still finds enjoyment in it. He's not denying how bad it is, nor he's ignorant about it, his opinion is informed, and he simply enjoyed the movie because he's overall a positive guy. He's a good example of how to have an opinion.
Alien; Aliens; Alien 3; and Alien : Isolation are the real Alien stories. I think the Alien franchise needs to end. At this point, I think there needs to be movie made in the in the same vein of horror suspense as Alien or the same vein of action horror as Aliens.
I do agree for me my favs were Alien Covenant,Alien,Aliens,Alien 3. I thought AC was a decent prequel but it should end there. Alien Ressurection could of been better. Prometus was a major mess. I can't Play Alien Isolation but I heard it had a good story which takes place after the original Alien. One film I can think of is Annihilation which came out in 2018 now that is what a good horror/sci-fi/action flick should be it was original too, reminded me of the Thing,Alien, & Forbeddon World.
We would really like to see original ideas come arise again. It's just pathetic how much rehashing is done and how little creativity is allowed to exist.
@@mkproductions2.0 could have. Not "could of". That doesn't mean anything. Also, AC sucks the worst of all of them. At least Alien Resurrection was funny.
I was disappointed that they didn't go further with the engineers like they promised at the end Prometheus , instead we have one quick scene of David killing them almost like they wanna be done with the engineers closing that plot line and just have aliens now, but who knows maybe they will be explored in future films i think that would be entertaining .But in the end i was entertained during the film.
james cobham Exactly. There's a lot of questions about the Engineers that I want answered because of Prometheus; and that's why Prometheus is so brilliant.
They cant expand the engineers story because the last engineer was killed in Prometheus thus not being able to explain also the movie is about the Aliens not about engineers. The engineers was just a reason for the Alien story to kick off, humans find advanced civilization in space they find advanced civilization(engineers) but stumble across another species(Aliens) in space that begins to spread and now its up to humans to stop it from getting into evil humans who want to use the Alien species as a weapon
The movie was just meh for me. Very predictable all the way through including the end twist. on it's own it was just an ok action/horror, but as part of the Alien franchise it was definitely below par.
I like how James appreciated the cinematic creativity that the film actually had and talked about the different aspects of the plot vs. the subject matter and Mike was how he always is about everything...."it wasn't made at least 20 years ago so its fucking garbage."
Mike's right though, Covenant was absolute garbage. That's why they're not making any more alien films. It was so bad that it literally killed the franchise.
It was impossible to take this movie seriously when two different characters slip on the same puddle of blood within a minute of each other. The crew is dumber than the teens an your average slasher flick.
I actually liked this movie because it was a direct sequel to Prometheus and successfully tied Prometheus into the Alien franchise. I also think the way they tied both movies together was done quite well and seemed to go over lots of people's heads. Of course I didn't think they were anywhere near as good as Alien or Aliens, but I don't really expect those movies to be topped. I expected to be entertained and immersed and these movies did that, much more-so than the other movies of the franchise (Alien 3 and Resurrection). I understand why some people wouldn't like it but I'm not too into Sci-Fi most of the time anyways. This fits my Sci-fi tastes quite well. I think as a couple, Prometheus and Covenant are a solid duo.
I quite liked it, and I agree with James: you can say it's a good film, without having to cheapen the untouchable originals while doing so. There's a compromise that a lot of people forget about.
Also serious comment: I feel like there is a lot more Giger in the prequels though. People are not talking about about the Geiger. Shawls dead body was a Giger panting. The art on the walls were Giger. They are giving us the Giger. That you have to respect that about the newer films.
TheWinni2011 I actually liked it because I took it for what it was and where the plot was going. Like everyone was so mad cuz of the whole prometheus thing and I get that but that part of the story is not going to be explained I feel. Its going to be what the origin of the aliens use to be like this unknown thing in the universe that we may never get an answer to. And thats cool I dont mind that. This movie to me was a pretty cool follow up to Prometheus
David saved this movie. Most Alien movies are just the typical "something went wrong, now theres zombies" plot. And this movie has that ultra stupid plot until david shows up and stop it. From then on, its a much better movie, witht the intrigue of david there, and its not just stupid humans getting cut down.
What made me appreciate this film was for a lit class I wrote a research paper on Ozymandias, the poem mentioned in the film and the connotations and references from Ozymandias made the film mean alot more
I've seen millions of star trek episodes with them walking around on unknown planets without any kind of helmets or anything, why is no one ever complaining about that? Could anyone please explain this to me? And it's not just Star Trek, it's basically the entire science fiction genre. Why are people all of a sudden acting like this is the dumbest thing anyone has ever done in a movie?
It's because they had people wearing helmets and then taking them off. If you look at Star Trek, they have people not wearing helmets but they also have aliens everywhere who all look like humans and can have children with humans, they have people with psychic powers, the computers look like old mainframes from the 1950s, the ships all go on the same plane for no reason, everyone just ignores that because it's not what the story is about.
Sheesh James, you have an entire legion of fans at your disposal! If you needed to find a video, you should've just Tweeted that you were looking for it, we woulda hooked you up!
i think alien and terminator are both a good bit better than their sequels. I think the sequels are among the best sequels ever made, but still there's a larger gap b/w the original films and the sequels than people realize...I think especially with Terminator 2 but also with Aliens that this is the case.
this movie was sooo disapointing....i primarily got into the ALIEN series to learn the back story of the xenomorphs and who created them so when prometheus came out they did that for me and i ENJOYED prometheus even tho alot of people hated it...but then this movie covenent was supposed to tell us more about the engineers and tell us how they created humans - well this movie FAILED at all of that...this was such a disapointment this movie was all about david and HIS creating story and solved nothing about the back story about tthe engineers
Thanks Mike!! You've summed it up for me in one sentence!! It looked more like a Sci-fi android movie rather than an Alien horror one .. that was also my feeling after I'd watched it
'face hugger' is such a cutesy euphemism for what's really happening there...like the little bugger should get reported to human resources instead of SVU
Heck, I think one of the biggest scrapped ideas was James Franco's performance in the movie. There's a scene in the trailer where you can tell he would be playing a key role but for whatever reason, they torch him in the pod and thats it! You can tell he would have had a bigger role because they opted for a a cameo bit in the picture frame for like 17 seconds… lmao, laaaaame.
Two of the last movies are about an evil android slapped with the word "Alien" on it. We expected it to be about the engineers and aliens, not about an evil android and some overly stupid humans. What a terrible waste of opportunity.
*alien movie with new ideas comes out* fans: oh NOH!!! they ruined the movie!! *alien movie with classic ideas* fans: oh NoH!! Same old thing!! Predictable!!
Yeah I got that impression too, and wasnt sure if thats why they seemed awkward. Seemed like James liked it and Mike was railing so hard against it he didnt wanna say anything..I like Prometheus so Im sure I'll like COvenant
Yeah well just look at these comments about James liking Prometheus. I mean people are entitled to their opinions and I think generally James is pretty spot on
You're talking out of your ass… Then explain why, Chappie and Elysium were such utter pieces of shit movies? And how could HE have made this movie better when he's only made one good film thus far in life.
eh, District 9 is one of my all time favorite sci-fi movies, but Elysium and Chappie were pretty mediocre. Dunno what happened, but Blomkamp can't write a decent script anymore. I thought Chappie would be batter with Terri Tatchell being a co-writer again, but nope. Honestly including fucking Die Antwood and having Hugh Jackman being this ridiculous 1 dimensional bad guy is what ruined the whole movie for me. It's a shame because I liked Chappie by himself, and the CGI of him was mind blowing. SO in other words, I doubt Blomkamp would have saved this Alien movie.
Mike was right about the face-hugger thing, too. In Alien, the face-hugger was on John Hurt for a day or two. In this movie it was on, off, alien bursting out, and full-grown in the span of an hour!?! I feel like this further supports my "cattle prod" theory...
Mike is right, when John Hurt got a face hugger in the first movie, he was quarantined until it released its grasp, and was eating with the crew when it burst out, days at least.
Thats the weird thing about a lot of movies (and games as well) the trailers just look better than the actual films themselves, even though they are just incoherent snippets of a film usually lol
Probably the best UA-cam review I've seen for this movie so far, aside from Chris Stuckmann's. As for the chestburster gestating too fast, I can only presume that Ridley Scott was glossing over the period of time that had elapsed.
I get what you're trying to say about 'shit hitting the fan' too early in the movie, and I tend to agree with that, but you're not really catching the timing of modern theaters. When I watched the premiere in my town, there was this bunch of dyed noisy unrespectful not so young adults who were making all kinds of noise and comments, laughing at their occurrences, who couldn't do anything but shut up after 'that' scene happened. They had to remain silent in shock and awe because of the remarkful tragedy that just happened. Ridley literally disciplined those morons into sitting down and watching the movie. I'll be forever thankful for such a move.
Along with the original, this is my favorite Alien film. It’s a solid horror movie as much as a sci fi- and (at places) action movie. The atmosphere is so unsettling; the way the planet feels both so vast and “alive” yet completely devoid of life - it just gets to me. The awesome soundtrack plays a big part in this as well. David is a great villian with interesting motives; played amazingly by Fassbender. In a lot of ways I find him even scarier than the creatures. Not that it lacking in that department - the infestation/incubation scenes with the crew I found especially unnerving (and repulsive), yet I couldn’t look away. And the final showdown(s) with the xenomorph at the end? Come on - that’s grade A Alien material.
The facehugger in Covenant is fresh and new so it can hatch a lot faster opposed to the original movie where they’ve been lying dormant for possibly centuries
AvP 1 was great action movie to my mind, it doesn't pretend to be philosphical or smth, it is what it is AvP action with some ppl invovled, but it was GREAT.
The "Bayformers" movies, is like if the "rock jock" version of the Transformers theme song, that came out when Rodimus joined the cast, spontaneously turned into a movie franchise. Lol.
Like the Tom Ford film Nocturnal Animals, Alien Covenant is the means to destroying the Second World War, cancelling its existence. This is because Alien Covenant is a story about the dichotomy of an original needing to destroy its replication, but not having the power to
The way Dr. Shaw died by the David's hand was really disturbing. It would have been such an interesting continuation on how David's and Shaw's relationship grew until finale where she is killed and the engineers destroyed. A psychological thriller about how David descended into complete madness and disregard of any life that is deemed by him "Beneath him" (Waylon's notion)
alien 3 is honestly underrated, people act like its as bad as resurrection but its a pretty well made film aside from the terrible special effects on the alien wouldnt say its a great film but i would put it above covenant, there was almost nothing liked about this film but the cinematography
To the youtube commenter it may concern. Your opinion matters and it's equally important as anyone elses, even if it's illogical and/or subjective. All of the internet needs to hear your opinion.
Did anyone else notice that Walter basically had the same voice as Bishop? At least it seemed like Fassbender was basically mimicking the same voice. I thought that was a really cool nice touch.
The point about the movie getting too sad too quick is really interesting. I've noticed this theme in a lot of new movies lately. To name a few; Godzilla. Huge emotional arc at the very beginning involving Bryan Cranstons character which ends with him dying (and btw, alot of the promo material was about him and he dies immediately?). Its just too much too early, I didnt get to have any feelings about him or the situation before it was already over, and I was just left annoyed about how the movie was trying to force me to feel sad. Man of Steel. Epic emotional CG story about superman's parents right off the bat. Are we really supposed to care this much about these characters we only met two seconds ago?
Your "American Movie"esque "Ko-Van" made me laugh hysterically. I actually just watched that movie based on hearing you talk about it. Then Alien Covenant. I think the main problem is that they tried to include this in the franchise. Had it been it's own film- maybe better?
This film fucking blew. The writers fucked up big time. Way worse than Prometheus. I initially gave it a 6 on IMDB but after a week of thought I want to change it to a 2. Just awful.
My main gripe is the crew is so damn dumb that they didn't need an evil android or xenomorphs to die. They would have died off naturally, so the antagonists only sped up the process. Seriously! Doooomed!
I think the point is David had already infiltrated their plans and ship?
When the pilot starts shooting randomly inside the ship and blows everything away including herself was disappointing.
the stupidity was pointed out on screen rant too
I wanted Shaw to meet the Engineers who would answer all of her questions.
me too. i was hoping she'd come back in this movie.

tyranthate Alien Covenant does answer a lot...but subtlely and in metaphors. Check out the "Twin Perfect" video about it.
"Nobody expects at this point to go to the theater and see a movie as good as the originals"
This could be said for a lot of movies recently...
Bob Bobson that just makes it sad and depressing

Mike is totally correct about the alien grow times, every movie since the original has sped up the grow time and now its almost instantaneous.
Brahm Danger To play devil's advocate here, the aliens in Covenant are not the same as the aliens in Alien and Aliens.
Bruh...the original grew to full size and killed everyone within 24 hours...if you listen to the time references in covenant, you'll learn that its pretty similar
The growth time is mostly implied from what I remember. It's a bit of a frivolous thing to point out anyway.

Don't blame me I copied that from the official... "official"... "official"??? Alien wiki
2009Bandman I have already touched this comment
And you can see how how badly Ridley fucked up the timeline with Android: Covenant.
The flute scene was epic. Not even Picard in TNG did it that well
they really need to do a james & mike monday on alien isolation
Came here to say this. I thoroughly enjoyed that game. Sad to hear the development team was broken up.
The movie aint complete trash, what destroyed it for me was the explanation of aliens origins. This alone makes me want to pretend this shit never existed.
Lito it's fan fiction
No fan fiction would have been better.
Lito the origin isnt even that bad. Its pretty cool to me tbh.
I agree about the origins being so bad. I wish this movie didn't exist. This movie does have other faults too.
the only transformers i ever cares about was Beast Wars.
very limited on humans, you just watch the robots war.
ryan phillips Beast wars was cool. Love that episode with the golden disc showing the original megatrons message.
I think this movie biggest mistake was ruining the lore with the mad scientist cliche killing the xenomorph mythos.
How did it ruin the lore? David didn't create the Xenomorphs.
Did you watch the film?
It's pretty much makes it that David did create this breed of Xenomorphs but not the entire species. It would retcon the fact we saw a mural in Prometheus which had an alien on it
David creates a "protomorph" a early xenomorph but if he's the creator who knows
James, those UA-cam Videos you couldn't find are called "Alien: Covenant | Prologue: The Crossing" and "Alien: Covenant | Prologue: Last Supper".
And "The Red Shoe Diaries"
Man, this is the reason why James is a fucking lovable guy. He knows the movie is pretty shitty but he still finds enjoyment in it. He's not denying how bad it is, nor he's ignorant about it, his opinion is informed, and he simply enjoyed the movie because he's overall a positive guy. He's a good example of how to have an opinion.
I respect him as a reviewer for many reasons, this included
Man Covenant was the worst of them, Ressurection is silly but still better in many ways than this excuse of an movie...
We would really like to see original ideas come arise again. It's just pathetic how much rehashing is done and how little creativity is allowed to exist.
Alien 3 Assembly Cut is much better than this.
Yeah. Predictable. It's like a common alien movie. Loved prometheus better.
M every movie after aliens was below par. It's like after the second movie they ran out of good ideas
Every movie after Aliens was NOT directed by James Cameron. Thats why they will always suck in comparison.
Very much how I felt. A lot of the suspense was gone due to the heavy foreshadowing and a lot of the action/mayhem being shown in the trailers.
@JMFS yes... That is what I said..?
Also serious comment: I feel like there is a lot more Giger in the prequels though. People are not talking about about the Geiger. Shawls dead body was a Giger panting. The art on the walls were Giger. They are giving us the Giger. That you have to respect that about the newer films.
can we get a Resident Evil series review by James
The friendship between these two is admirable
Mike hated it, James liked it. I agree with Mike. It's a mess of a movie
Mike is so stuck in the past
TheWinni2011 Genius movie
It’s so fucking horrible... one of the biggest disappointments in years. There’s no way this movie wasn’t given up on half way through filming.
alien covenant last supper and alien covenant prologue are UA-cam exclusives.
I agree so much more with Mike than with James, no offense. Also hated the focus on Androids. Angry Joe said it right, it's David: Covenant
If you saw them you know already. They scan the planets before they go down to see if it has an atmosphere they can breathe.
@@kennymendoza1581 they don't wear helmets in alien covenant.
The YT video that sets up the crew for Alien Covenant is called Alien Covenant last supper, if anyone wants to see it.
There aren't any Xenomorphs in this movie. Neomorphs and a Protomorph, why doesnt anyone get this? It's not the perfect organism yet.
Did it even get mentioned in the movie?
this movie was sooo disapointing....i primarily got into the ALIEN series to learn the back story of the xenomorphs and who created them so when prometheus came out they did that for me and i ENJOYED prometheus even tho alot of people hated it...but then this movie covenent was supposed to tell us more about the engineers and tell us how they created humans - well this movie FAILED at all of that...this was such a disapointment this movie was all about david and HIS creating story and solved nothing about the back story about tthe engineers
"Supposed" to my ass, you are just butthurt you couldn't predict it
Thanks Mike!!
"I thought it was kind of a mess"
my thoughts exactly.
Woulda been better to see it was Franco before he was torched. Coulda been funnier than Segal getting pitched out of the plane in Executive Decision.
they did that with Bryan Cranston in that Godzilla movie
This movie was worse than Prometheus, it has nothing on Alien 3.
Nah better than Prometheus
I would rather watch Exodus: Gods and Kings over Alien: Covenant even though it was better than Prometheus.
Nothing wrong with him. He got good taste unlike you.
Damn right
agree prometheus much muuuuch better
Two of the last movies are about an evil android slapped with the word "Alien" on it. We expected it to be about the engineers and aliens, not about an evil android and some overly stupid humans. What a terrible waste of opportunity.
*alien movie with new ideas comes out*
fans: oh NOH!!! they ruined the movie!!
*alien movie with classic ideas*
fans: oh NoH!! Same old thing!! Predictable!!
Have you thought about that they might not be the excact same fans?
Some words you never want to hear in the same sentence;
"Alien" and "attempt"
James and Mike seemed to have really awkward chemistry in this video.
Justin Lynch I think James liked it that's why and Mike didn't
Dan Moreno lol so true
Yeah I got that impression too, and wasnt sure if thats why they seemed awkward. Seemed like James liked it and Mike was railing so hard against it he didnt wanna say anything..I like Prometheus so Im sure I'll like COvenant
Yeah well just look at these comments about James liking Prometheus. I mean people are entitled to their opinions and I think generally James is pretty spot on
It was just sexual tension
Yes mike about a day or so passes with the facehugger. At least the good alien movies, ignoring avp and avpr
Only a few to several hours this was stated in resurrection. It takes a day for it to grow to a full xenomorph after bursting out of someone.
I liked it for what it is
Can you review spaceballs
The Neill Blomkamp movie would have been awesome. It will probably not happen.. :(
You're talking out of your ass… Then explain why, Chappie and Elysium were such utter pieces of shit movies?
And how could HE have made this movie better when he's only made one good film thus far in life.
At least the basic plot was not a carbon copy of the original.
Emmanuel Correia the movie was fucken terrible...whats to like?
Frank Borrego district 9 wasn't just a "good" movie
It was a fucking masterpiece
eh, District 9 is one of my all time favorite sci-fi movies, but Elysium and Chappie were pretty mediocre.
"Correct me if I'm wrong, you know more about the Alien movies than me, but isn't there like an alien or something, something like that?"
search for "alien covenant last supper"
Mike was right about the face-hugger thing, too. In Alien, the face-hugger was on John Hurt for a day or two. In this movie it was on, off, alien bursting out, and full-grown in the span of an hour!?!
I feel like this further supports my "cattle prod" theory...
Mike is right, when John Hurt got a face hugger in the first movie, he was quarantined until it released its grasp, and was eating with the crew when it burst out, days at least.
*you know a movie aint good, if there start TRANSFOMERS COMPARISONS XD*
Thats the weird thing about a lot of movies (and games as well) the trailers just look better than the actual films themselves, even though they are just incoherent snippets of a film usually lol
James and Mike need to do a colab with RLM
When did James become the thin one?
Probably the best UA-cam review I've seen for this movie so far, aside from Chris Stuckmann's. As for the chestburster gestating too fast, I can only presume that Ridley Scott was glossing over the period of time that had elapsed.
Love the movie reviews, guys. Keep 'em coming!
Isn't below par a good thing? At least with Golf.
Come on - that’s grade A Alien material.
couldn't agree with you more
@@Zatzzo Thank you - glad to know that at least one person on the planet does :D
I hope James Franco gets an Oscar for his lengthy role
The facehugger in Covenant is fresh and new so it can hatch a lot faster opposed to the original movie where they’ve been lying dormant for possibly centuries
rather the movie was bad or just ok....mike and James can do movie reviews just right...better then that AJ movie reviews.
Oscar agreed ,but his games reviews are on. point
ohyeah true AJ's video game reviews r good actually
AvP 1 was great action movie to my mind, it doesn't pretend to be philosphical or smth, it is what it is AvP action with some ppl invovled, but it was GREAT.
Oddly enough Prometheus is my favorite "Alien" movie while Covenant is my worst. It was even the worst movie I saw all that year.
The "Bayformers" movies, is like if the "rock jock" version of the Transformers theme song, that came out when Rodimus joined the cast, spontaneously turned into a movie franchise. Lol.
At least one of our ancestors got some screen time.
These movies have all been generally visually fantastic, but they keep repeating the same character mistakes to the point of frustration.
We can debate about the quality of each sequel but I enjoyed this one the least of all. AVP not included.
It's a mess and that is not wrong. Nothing more to see folks.
Was it just me or was Prometheus a lot like Jason X but better?
Yes but worse. At least Jason X is enjoyable schlock.
They should've just made a comedy of it with Franco and McBride in the movie.
so they find space weed on the planet? :P
buffalo stu they had to go to Juniper for space weed
buffalo stu Yes..Much better movie..Plus Actually kill those Xenomorphs. They are not that strong.
alien 3 is honestly underrated, people act like its as bad as resurrection but its a pretty well made film aside from the terrible special effects on the alien
wouldnt say its a great film but i would put it above covenant, there was almost nothing liked about this film but the cinematography
Mike and James! Thank U!
To the youtube commenter it may concern. Your opinion matters and it's equally important as anyone elses, even if it's illogical and/or subjective. All of the internet needs to hear your opinion.
Iroquois Plisken It's pointed towards you guys. The commenters, moron.
C'mon it wasn't _that_ bad. Fassbender's double role was really the most enjoyable part of the movie.
considering the time they had to make convenant and the story of prometheus they could continue, this movie is even worse than Alien 3
Did anyone else notice that Walter basically had the same voice as Bishop? At least it seemed like Fassbender was basically mimicking the same voice. I thought that was a really cool nice touch.
Still wondering about the Engineers flashback. That scene was left to the imagination as to why they were there.
People you gotta love Alien 3 it's good !!!
No.
Oh cmon, Alien 3 wasn't that bad, nor was Resurrection.
There a little silly and stupid but entertaining and thats all that matters
I respect these guys opinions on movies so much. Especially james
Just awful.
Sloth55Chunk ...this one was bad, Prometheus was worse...
I hope they make Alien 5: Awakening next.
Sloth55Chunk lol had to savior it in and leave a bad taste in your mouth
Prometheus was worse for me, but i wouldn't give either a 2 in a planet where Jack and Jill and Movie 43 exist.
