I don't mind this movie. Not great, but it has a spot in my heart. I saw it in the theatre for a friend's 7th birthday party. All everyone was excited for was seeing Yoshi, and I ended up falling asleep during that part. I remember leaving the theatre thinking the fungus turning out to be the transformed king was really clever, and I still do actually. It was a nice use of material from Mario 3, and it upped the threat, made it a "mystery", and adapted it well to live action. Also, I think the dinosaur theme was in there because they were pushing Super Mario World so hard at the time. But you didn't mention the other cliff hanger: Where Nintendo CEOs come to offer two of the characters their very own movie....

If I had directed Super Mario Brothers, aside from making it, you know actually more like the game, I would have had to have this scene: Mario, Luigi, and Daisy together at a restaurant having dinner: Daisy: "So, Mario, do you have anyone special in your life, well besides Luigi." Mario: "Nah, not really" Luigi: "What about Pauline?" Mario: "You know we're not together anymore." Luigi: "But you really liked her!" Mario: "I don't want to talk about it, we're through." Daisy: "What happened with you and Pauline?" Mario: "I really don't want to talk about it, just a lot of monkey business."
My wife and I had a similar discussion recently about 80s and 90s movies and how they hold up or appear now. We came to the same conclusion; for the most part they are like little time capsules of a time gone by.
I want to go back. Not that far though, I want to go back to 1999-2000. I of course want to take my spouse and child to see as well. That was a great time.
Maybe just World 2. Their planet was basically just an endless desert - Koopahari Desert to be exact. I thought maybe we’d see a different dimension or “World” in the sequel.

And if it was not mentioned somewhere already, the japanese name for the charactrer is actually Kuppa or Koopa. Bowser seems to be the name for western markets.

He was called that but in the manual they did call him bowser koopa. Heck even in the super mario brothers 3 cartoon in an episode koopa once introduced himself as boswer koopa but told the criminal to call him king koopa.
I have never seen the movie completely, but I have read the book adaptation, and guess what the fungus king was called? Bowser. Fucking Bowser. They couldn't name the actual Bowser Bowser, but named the fungus king that wasn't even in the game.

Bob Hoskins was phenomenal. WFRR is one of my favourite films of all time. And his portrayal of Smee in Hook was pretty fantastic as well. Speaking of which, you should review Hook at some point!
Of all the things to get movies, I still wonder why we couldn't get a MechWarrior movie. I would have been all over this, as I love MechWarrior FMVs. With the Inner Sphere and its hundreds of years of history, you're not at any kind of shortage for a plot either. If you watch any MechWarrior FMV, such as the intros to MechCommander or MechWarrior 4, you can see how awesome a movie could have been. I could written plots for one myself, if I thought anyone of power would ever do something with it.
I never understand why people hate how she was called toadstool. If anything it makes more sense. Toadstool is a type of mushroom and the toads look just like them. Plus Mario eats mushrooms all the time.

I love the Super Mario Bros movie! I was just getting into Nintendo after playing Super Smash Bros Brawl and I found the Super Mario Bros movie at Block Buster. Since I never really played the games before hand, I had nothing to compare it to. I watched it everyday, all day until we had to turn it back in. I'm pretty sure we rented it more than once. I was honestly surprised when I found out that the majority didn't like it. I have it on DVD now. Through some stroke of luck, I got it in a white elephant exchange. Best present ever!

I always felt the movie was alright. Still enjoyable. It's interesting that Nintendo is considering a new animated film of Super Mario Bros, but this time they're said to be doing things themselves.
And it already has a cool reboot game which is very awesome; the sisters TWIST their dream world with their various moves, switching places on the fly to change the background, colors and music, collect their own collectible crystals and get to various places! That might be a cool movie concept.
Back in the 90s in México we always called Bowser, "Koopa".So when the movie came out, it made sense to everybody. The koopa troopers were only know as "tortugas".
The best Mario Bros. movie was a Japanime where Mario wants to rescue Toadstool from a forceful marriage to Bowser. Luigi just wants gold. What's funny is watching Bowser being in denial that Toadstool doesn't reciprocate his feelings. I don't speak Japanese, so I can't remember what it was called. The ending is typical of how Toadstool treats Mario.
I hope it doesn't end up like this. Because imagine Link with a mustache, no Zelda, Octorocks with human bodies, machine guns and blaster, Ganondorf as a mob boss who turns into a dinosaur and the setting being on Earth. But, on the other hand, if executed correctly, it would be legitimately awesome.
I really want to address this: I downright DESPISE when they call him King Koopa. It's not as memorable a name nor as frightening as Bowser. That's a fitting name for an imposing villain. I know in Japan he's King Koopa, but I grew up hearing his name be Bowser, so that's what stuck to me.

I completely agree with this sentiment. Most modern movies can't achieve what this movie did. Perhaps not in terms of budget, but certainly in terms of actual enjoyment. It's sad that we never saw the promised sequel at the end.

Bowser is and always has been Koopa in Japan. I don't know why they chose to use the Japanese name rather than the English name for an American movie, though.

Just as Princess Toadstool was always Princess Peach in Japan. Bowser was always Koopa in Japan. The movie seems to have picked the names they felt most to be most fitting.
Wasn't the weird clash because the directors basically filled their own movie (a blade runner ripoff), ignoring anything Mario brothers, and the producers, with no budget left had to cut together something with what was already there?
No, it's because the screenplay was in fact based on the 1983 arcade game which was vastly different to it's "Super" sequel. The screenwriter for whatever reason(mostly because Supershow adapted it too) felt that the original Mario game's canon needed to be adapted as officially a storyline part of the series. That's why we ended up with a film set in the sewer system of New York, about Mario and Luigi descending into the sewers of NYC to fight Koopas and finding an alternate dimension called the Mushroom Kingdom in the sewers of NYC. Plus "Mario Mario" and "Luigi Mario".... Let's face it, Nintendo should have told the film-makers "You know you should do it purely as an adaptation of the sequel, and the sequel's sequels. Don't fret too much about the original original game and it's story. 'Super Mario Bros.' was a reboot anyway in hindsight".... but they didn't.

In the cartoons they didn't refer to him as Bowser, they called him King Koopa.
In a few episodes of the Super Mario 3 show, he's addressed as "Bowser Koopa." Most notably in the episode Crimewave Clyde.
There’s also a few books that came out around the same time which refer to Bowser as “King Koopa”.

Koopa (or Kuppa) was Bowser's name in the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros.
His name was switched to Bowser for the North American release.
I always hate when companies do that kind of stuff, unless it's something like SEGA changing the Mega Drive to Genesis because of a trademark.

I love the Super Mario Bros movie! I was just getting into Nintendo after playing Super Smash Bros Brawl and I found the Super Mario Bros movie at Block Buster. Since I never really played the games before hand, I had nothing to compare it to. I watched it everyday, all day until we had to turn it back in. I'm pretty sure we rented it more than once. I was honestly surprised when I found out that the majority didn't like it. I have it on DVD now. Through some stroke of luck, I got it in a white elephant exchange. Best present ever!
Idgaf, I loved this movie. I think the reasoning is because my son was a huge Mario Bros fan when he was very little. We even watch the Super Mario Super Show, the old live action tv show. Sometimes a movie is so bad, that it’s actually great. This is one of them for me

I always felt the movie was alright. Still enjoyable. It's interesting that Nintendo is considering a new animated film of Super Mario Bros, but this time they're said to be doing things themselves.
If you dont compare it to the video games, it's actually not a bad movie. It's rather unique and funny.

Back in the 90s in México we always called Bowser, "Koopa".So when the movie came out, it made sense to everybody. The koopa troopers were only know as "tortugas".

The best Mario Bros. movie was a Japanime where Mario wants to rescue Toadstool from a forceful marriage to Bowser. Luigi just wants gold. What's funny is watching Bowser being in denial that Toadstool doesn't reciprocate his feelings. I don't speak Japanese, so I can't remember what it was called. The ending is typical of how Toadstool treats Mario.

I really want to address this: I downright DESPISE when they call him King Koopa. It's not as memorable a name nor as frightening as Bowser. That's a fitting name for an imposing villain. I know in Japan he's King Koopa, but I grew up hearing his name be Bowser, so that's what stuck to me.

Not gonna lie, I have a soft spot for this movie. If you ignore the fact that it's supposed to be an adaptation, it works much better on its own. It's not by any means great, but it's fun.
I can appreciate it for what it is. Cyberpunk + dinosaurs with mushrooms on top.

It wasn't a terrible movie. It was entertaining. Which I can't say that for most movies now days.
I completely agree with this sentiment. Most modern movies can't achieve what this movie did. Perhaps not in terms of budget, but certainly in terms of actual enjoyment. It's sad that we never saw the promised sequel at the end.

Your reviews are always fucking awesome. I love this movie but strictly from a nostalgic point of view; I saw it as a kid and was pissed that they messed up the adaptation -- but at the same time when watching it today, it still brings me back to my childhood and I think that what should count... at least for THIS one.

He was always King Koopa on The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. When this movie came out, I knew him best as King Koopa. It wasn't until Super Mario World that I ever actually heard him commonly referred to as Bowser

Just as Princess Toadstool was always Princess Peach in Japan. Bowser was always Koopa in Japan. The movie seems to have picked the names they felt most to be most fitting.

Nintendo announced a new Mario movie today on their Nintendo Direct - 9.23.2021 stream.
Wasn't the weird clash because the directors basically filled their own movie (a blade runner ripoff), ignoring anything Mario brothers, and the producers, with no budget left had to cut together something with what was already there?
No, it's because the screenplay was in fact based on the 1983 arcade game which was vastly different to it's "Super" sequel. The screenwriter for whatever reason(mostly because Supershow adapted it too) felt that the original Mario game's canon needed to be adapted as officially a storyline part of the series. That's why we ended up with a film set in the sewer system of New York, about Mario and Luigi descending into the sewers of NYC to fight Koopas and finding an alternate dimension called the Mushroom Kingdom in the sewers of NYC. Plus "Mario Mario" and "Luigi Mario"....
Let's face it, Nintendo should have told the film-makers "You know you should do it purely as an adaptation of the sequel, and the sequel's sequels. Don't fret too much about the original original game and it's story. 'Super Mario Bros.' was a reboot anyway in hindsight".... but they didn't.

I don't understand all the hate this movie gets. I like it, one of my childhood classics. I mean I dunno what people expect from a Mario brothers movie. I mean yeah it's nowhere near a master piece but I think they did a good job taking it somewhere new.
