    I saw this in the theater with friends, and I have to say it scared the crap out of us. One reason was the marketing didn't convey that this film is horror, it made it out to be a regular SciFi film. The scene that always stuck with me was Sam Neil in the bowels of the ship with the lights going out, and then boom, there's his dead wife yelling in his ear. Great movie

    • @TheUltimateRage
      @TheUltimateRage 4 роки тому +5

      It's a problem IN GENERAL!!! Whether I'm watching UA-cam, TV, movies, whatever. There's no real standard for volume, so everything is haywire. If you take UA-cam by itself, for instance, if you watch multiple videos, you'll instantly notice that all the different videos are at different volumes, sometimes within the same video, ESPECIALLY with video montages. Some clips will be MUCH louder/quieter than others, so it's difficult to deal with sound, even with great speakers!

I’m thinking that whispering / soft talking is used more often in modern movies because they assume the higher quality audio and louder volumes for theaters. Seems like old school technique was to make sure actors said their lines loud enough to be picked up clearly, but now they just mumble under their breath the whole time in some movies. In those cases the only way I can hear dialog clearly without blasting my neighbors during action sequences is to just use headphones.

      I have an E.Q. that can be enabled and used to subtly or drastically alter the sound. I use it when I want a little more bass.
      Also, my K70 keyboard has a volume roller on it, that allows me to change the volume on the fly.
      I use it when I think a movie's about to change volume too drastically. (I fucking hate jump scares.)

    You can look at the film as being in the Warhammer 40k universe and it doesn't lose a beat - the ship went into the warp with no means of protection. Chaos possessed both the crew and the ship. None of them escape at the end. They all die, including the would-be rescuers. Could have been made better, but probably not today.

      From a psychological stand point, the human mind is used to the faces of other people being a certain way. It's the living thing we see most through our lives, right from birth.
      When they don't correspond to the automatic internal checklist that happens to establish what you're seeing is a face, it creates unease or outright fear. Similar principle to "the uncanny valley".
      Adding the fright, at a highly impressionable/developmental stage in life, from the movie and you have are having a correlative experience. Eyeless people take you back to that fear you felt as a child.

Each delves into slightly different areas/tell different stories, so it wouldn't be a waste of time to watch both. ;) Apparently, they were all set to do a director's cut, but they found that all of the original footage was stored in some salt mine somewhere and it was almost completely ruined. I think they were able to save some to show in the home media special features. It's too bad. I would have really liked to see the director's original vision for this film. :(

      Cronenberg one would be the good reference. But yeah anyways its a great remake/readaptation ! a classic horror movie
