I agree with most of those. I did enjoy the matrix a little and I love the big lebowski on the sheer absurdity. It's a bunch of 70's stereotypes mashed together.
I agree with him honestly. It’s a good movie and I respect it’s legacy and what it did for cinema, but it’s not a movie I’d put in my top 10. Probably not even top 20 lol
Citizen Kane to cinema is kinda like what Rakim is to hip hop music. Highly influential and pioneered techniques of the art form, but not necessarily the GOAT.
"For me, it's refreshing to hear an opinion that is different from my own." James showing himself to be the exact opposite of what the internet and culture is in 2017. Good for you James, hearing alternate opinions and ideas will make all of us better. The echo chambers we create for ourselves are doing so much harm!
Jake Hawney Totally agree. Often I've been told to "chill" or "relax" when all I did was express an opinion contrary to the "accepted" popular one and wasn't upset/angry. People on the internet these days tend to think just because you don't line up with their view of what you should express, you're about to blow a gasket, which would be hilarious if it weren't so sad.
Pulp Fiction is one of my favorites.. The main reason is there's so many different stories in it but as the movie goes on all of the stories come together.
The idea of the Matrix is what makes it great. It's like philosophy for everyone. Expanding on the world too much in the follow up movies kinda took the focus of this idea.
The philosophy in the sequels is fantastic, but you're right the world building muddied it too much to be easily digestible. Watching the sequels with the "philosophy of" commentary turned on was wonderful though
Exactly. The Matrix bullet slow mo is not just a special effect, it literally represents the Matrix and what the character is living in. It allows the viewer to be "in the Matrix" itself. This is one of the reasons the parodies are so funny ... they aren't in the Matrix.
I would like the big lebowski better if people didnt praise it as the best movie of all time, fans of the movie seem caustic in nature and are beyond defensive of it, like my opinion man... is like that his rug is overrated
I have to agree about “A Christmas Story”. I didn’t see it until much later, but when I did, I thought it was decent, but definitely not worthy of a 24-hour marathon.
Same here. I was one of the only people I know who had not seen it. Only recently I finally watched it. I liked it. I didn't laugh out loud. I just liked it. I still like it. That's all.
I had never heard of it until around 15 years ago, when it was somehow a "classic" that "everybody has seen". IMO the setting and filming make it seem more "classic" than it is. Is it worth watching though? absolutely.
@@travis1240 It's like "It's A Wonderful Life" where TV stations just insisted on spamming it that everyone just kinda...accepted that it's a film that exists.
I love how there's so many cocky content creators making videos like "GRRRR TOP 10 MOST OVERRATED MOVIES/GAMES" where they state their opinions as facts in weird attempts to shame people that like those things and here good guy James is bringing it up in the most personal and civil way possible for the sake of discussion of the things he loves.
Pasta Grinder No one is stating their opinions as “facts.” It goes without saying it’s just their opinion. While James’s refreshing chill style is my preference, I don’t take personally a more passionate approach either.
@@michaelmcdonald8452 While I do agree that people shouldn't have to say "in my opinion" for every single time they state their view on something to signify that it isn't factual, people are definitely guilty of over-glorifying their own opinions and/or being extremely loud about it, which is the real point I was trying to make.
It's just sad to me that he had to hammer home the fact that it was just his opinion, and if you disagreed with him you already won because most people love the movies he mentions. He had to do that because he;s smart, and he knew there was a legion of online idiots waiting to be offended by his opinions and cause trouble for him.
@@sieghowdy8653 not to mention the swath of pretentious critics who actually reckon their opinions are factual and "objectively correct". i stay far away from film/music criticism because of how snobby so many of the writers are. i like civil discussions with people who have differing opinions, it's just the attitude and framing that turns me off to critics.
I personally like all the commentors who may or may not have actually watched the video objecting to youtubers doing things that didnt happen in the video.
i interpretated Donnie Darko in a way that made me love it, i guess it's wrong but i knew what it was going for, and i love movies with conveluted endings, it makes you come back and think, and once you find tge meaning it feels so rewarding.
Yeah, it became a massive hugbox full of hysterical people that doesn't like different opinions and ideas from the majority. I missed the old days when people used to be cool about others being and thinking different than the rest, it was kind of its original purpose.
Losba But it's rarely presented the same outside of the internet. In person most close minded people don't automatically resort to name calling and figurative shit throwing if you don't agree with them.
Losba I'm sure it's just as prevalent, but people are usually much less confrontational IRL because there's more consequences talking face to face vs being just another rando screaming on the internet. It takes too much time/effort for most to track down who the person actually is, so most people abuse the perceived sense of anonymity, not caring about their reputation
... and then spend about half of each movie comment with that. And I think quite unnecessarily... Those who cannot accept that what they love may not be so special for another guy, won't say "OK, I get that, point taken." And those who do understand that a movie's value and entertainment value varies viewer by viewer, already get that without James having to point it out - let alone so many times and at such length it takes about half of this video.
I think The Grey is a good example of this. The trailers really made it out to be Liam Neeson kickin' some timber wolf ass. Whereas in the movie you never see any real wolf fight. I like it and own it but I never saw any hype trailers either. I look online and see reviews and opinions that it's horrible. But I know people don't go out of there way to praise movies online when they enjoy them versus how they will when they bash them.
Luke Milbocker I was hyped with the teaser trailer, but then ignored every other trailer for that film and even avoided the Internet as a whole days before the premiere to have as little expectation as possible, but, in the end, I was utterly disappointed anyways cause they badly ripped off the original Star Wars movie and made dumb decisions along the way, sadly.
Stephen Quinn True It's why I love watching his reviews like the Monster Madness or random reviews. Some of those movies I could careless, but he always gets me interested. Heck it's why I love You know what's bullshit.
To be honest, he just says smth like "I can't see what's so special about it, there are so many criminal dramas (sci-fi films, whatever) out there that are so much better". Still, it's more rational than 95% of UA-camrs, so I don't feel angry or anything.
Honestly the only character I can name on that movie is Jason Spade. Other than that, most people have trouble even naming one character from that movie and don’t remember anything about it except blue people.
I see Pulp Fiction as a time capsule movie. All of the actors in it are at the prime of their careers and the way they play off of each other is what makes the movie good for me.
ffgiza it really is the chemistry between the characters that makes it, as James put it, "special." in my opinion, even a more technically proficient film looks amateur by comparison because, well, Pulp Fiction was handled by, performed by, and executed by professionals in their prime on every front.
James is being so respectfull and properly taking the time to explain himself, and yet this is the video he makes where people are still disliking it. No other video has such a Dislike ratio
I agree with you on Citizen Kane. I have the utmost respect for the acting, cinematography, and the amazing feat accomplished by then-24 year old Orson Welles in making this film. I am a HUGE old movie buff, so people who know me automatically assume I LOVE CK. They are shocked to find out I don’t. Out of Welles oeuvre, I much prefer The Magnificent Ambersons (even though that was butchered during editing).
Eh, I think I got high watching Big Lebowski. But dark humor can be a pretty harsh thing while stoned, especially as you gradually sober. Sober or stoned, it's good but overrated.
I really like this piece. Your AVGN character is so eccentric(but hilarious and entertaining) that it's really nice to see your calm, pensive side. A lot of really good info and well-constructed opinion pieces, with comfy humor, in this vid. Dig it a lot, man.
As long as M. Night Shamalan keeps making movies, the Sixth Sense will always be around. Cause every trailer for his new movies has to note that he made that movie.
You're a movie guy, but they're "just movies"?! How DARE you express a reasonable, moderate, non-polarizing opinion! And on UA-cam of all places! (quietly subscribes)
Everytime I hear “#1 greatest film of all time” I’m just puzzled. What is that even supposed to mean? How is one topic/genre or even style of directing supposed to be greater than another? What makes a whole lot more sense is “most important film” or “favorite film”
I don't get it either. I get objectively good and bad movies/shows can exist but objectively best movie of all time? Someone please help me understand that.
wish I had a friend like this guy to talk movies with. Be fun having a conversation about movies with so much passion and knowledge where I've almost none in comparison.
A long time ago he made a list of sequels he thinks are better than most people say. It included stuff like Ghostbusters II and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Avatar was just an okay film to me. It was amazing at the time because the CGI and 3D blew me away, but looking at it now it's just way too long and an okay romance, scifi film. It's a chore to watch through now.
The one time I saw it, I was picking out tropes left and right. Actually using the name "Unobtainium" for its Unobtainium, however, made it really hard to take seriously. My reaction to that was "Whoever wrote this spends way too much time at TV Tropes!", and this is coming from a guy who is rarely without at least a few TV Tropes tabs open in his browser.
I love that you can express yourself in a way that doesn't feel like you're being an elitist. You are such a respected name in this industry for us gamers and movie geeks, James, and it's super refreshing when an unpopular opinion isn't communicated just because a creator wants to sound intellectually superior and a contrarian to something popular. If I'm honest, I think The Big Lebowski was surprising the most for me to see on this list. Every person I know that consider themselves "movie guys" always act like everything that the Coen brothers do is pure gold. Personally I love that movie but I totally respect your opinion. 👍
Its actually ironic for me. The Big Lebowski was on this list and I had never watched it before when this video came out, and now it is far and away my favorite movie. Thank you for showing it to me even though you don't enjoy it as much!
I think that may be another purpose of James’ video. I get a sense that he’s also saying, “I may not love these movies but if you’ve never seen them, give them a shot and you may get a better experience.”
Many movies are put on high pedestals and nearly worshipped. James' honesty is very refreshing, especially when it comes to highly praised and established movies. I had a really fun time watching this! 😄🙃🤠
Everyone has popular movies that they just don’t get or don’t like as much as anyone else. That can also apply to music, TV, and a lot of other things.

@AristOwl although i agree with half of what he said, the guy comes off pretty much like a snob. No wonder people worship him and RLM as some kind of intellectuals when they are just some random dudes on the internet saying nothing new.
Hung Nguyen what would it take for you to not think he was being a snob? Guy literally stressed the fact that these were his opinions and they were in no way greater than anyone else’s. I don’t get what it would take to not come off as a snob for you if he’s already said he gets why people have different opinions.
@@Johnlindsey289 I think it's more that when you compare it to the films of its time, it delivered the narrative in a lot of ways that they didn't. It's great in that sense maybe?
I've never even see "The Sixth Sense" because everyone's ruined it for me by giving away the ending... Makes me wish I could give myself temporary amnesia so I could watch movies without them being ruined or to experience them again as if I've never seen them.
That's the problem when a super amazing ending gets really well known, it loses all shock value. Like the ending of The Empire Strikes Back, who DOESN'T know its ending?
Someone told me I had to see it because there was a twist at the end. I guessed the twist well before it happened especially because I knew there was a big twist. I think I would've liked the movie better if I wasn't told there was a twist. I might have been able to guess it, but it would be more surprising because I still wouldn't have known anything about how it was going to end.
A bunch of guys at work cream over this movie, and they keep on trying to get me to watch it.... It's been several years, and I still haven't gotten around to viewing it yet, even though I have a copy from Netflix in my collection
I'm glad he mentioned the over-saturation of bullet time in comedy movies. It's nice to know I wasn't the only one who thought that joke was getting stale
I don't think anyone really cares about that movie anymore. Sure the visuals were amazing for its time, but that's the only thing it really had going for it. Everything else about it was incredibly dull and generic. It was little more than a long tech demo that showcased how far VFX have come. It lived and died by hype. Visuals aren't enough for a movie to be placed among the greatest movies *of all time*, when the technologies used to make them become obsolete so quickly
@@Darticus42 see...thatndoest really make sense. I mean..the reason it's considered the greatest of all times is for the reason that you stated..in it's time it was awesome. Of course people found things better as time went along...but those movies mostly have duplicates. Other movies that incorporates the same ideas within the same time. Matrix came with a plot and visuals that were great and no one else did it that way. Like...the ps1 is considered the greatest console of all time...even though ps2, 3 and Xbox 360 and one does what it did and better. That doesn't take away from the fact that in its time it was innovative, creative, unique. All that earned it it's title. And people..like me who honestly thought we could never get anything better than the quality that ps1 games got....i don't even play those games much anymore. I play them...but I can admit that we have better quality now. That I may play them in passing and from nostalgia...but...i .ca enjoy it for...the time it was created. A time when it was the greatest. There are boxers who could beat Ali today. And there are dancers who can outdance Michael Jackson and basketball players who can probably break down Jordan, but we still call those people the greatest. That's because in their time...they were. And they brought something then that no one saw before. A quality that was innovative, new, or unique. And everything afterwards seems to be built upon their ideas. And so...maybe if it weren't for them...we wouldn't have the quality of games, movies, fighters, players, etc...today. You need to understand what makes something the greatest of all time. It's found in the concept.
Donnie Darko was the opposite of It's A Wonderful Life. Instead of killing himself and finding out everyone was better off with him alive, Donnie survives and finds out everyone was better off with him dead (or worse off with him alive). It's A Wonderful Death.
Surprised how similar our lists are, I almost flat out agree with everything here, especially Donnie Darko. Only place we differ is Big Lebowski, but “that’s just like your opinion man”. Lol
it is kinda funny though, I think sometimes we fall in love with the idea of a movie rather than the movie itself. i've rewatched some movies i remember being great, then realized, oh they actually kinda suck.
That happens in video games too. You can't recapture that initial playthrough. Instead the limitations and flaws become apparent as the novelty fades. Majora's Mask is one of the greatest videogames of all time, and hands down the best Zelda. But it is difficult to revisit, because the emotional journey isn't the same.
The Matrix was fantastic for the period of time it came out and it's still enjoyable to watch now for the fight scenes, but I can definitely understand why someone that didn't see it at that time can be completely disinterested now.
I worked at a movie theater when the movie came out. It blew me away personally. I would walk into random showings, just to see the audience reactions. They went crazy over the movie everytime. I never seen such a universal positive reaction for a film, ever. I think it had something for everyone. Even people who didn't really understand the story (which after talking to many people about it, were numerous) loved it.
I LOVE the contrast between AVGN and the real James Rolphe. As AVGN, he's so insane, implulsive, always swearing and making shit jokes. But when to see THE REAL Jams Roplhe, you see that he's a very nice guy who doesn't pick a conflict with anyone. He's very rational and well-educated. I should say that James Rolphe is better than most of modern youtubers because of his. Most of them act loud and insane even outside their thematic videos.
I’ve never been into super heroes, I’ve watched like 3 because my friend needed someone to watch ‘em in theaters with but I don’t ever go out of my way to watch them.
I'm right there with you on Donnie Darko. What a really confusing flick, and the whole "It's awesome!" cacaphony from those around me about how great it was always confused me even more.
I guess it didn't click with you as much as with others, myself included bc its one of my fav movies and one where I understand the main character the most

I have to agree about “A Christmas Story”. I didn’t see it until much later, but when I did, I thought it was decent, but definitely not worthy of a 24-hour marathon.

I always thought A Christmas Story was always a television movie because the only time I ever saw it was on television.

Exactly. This is how I felt after watching that Netflix movie "I'm Thinking of Ending Things". Very similar.
The amount of disclaimers that James had to regurgitate at the beginning is testament to what is wrong with much of the internet.
Yeah, it became a massive hugbox full of hysterical people that doesn't like different opinions and ideas from the majority.
I missed the old days when people used to be cool about others being and thinking different than the rest, it was kind of its original purpose.
I imagine close-mindedness is just as prevalent outside of the internet too.
I was just about to write the same thing but you beat me to it! Haha
I like how James has to do abunch of damage control at the start because LOL THE INTERNET.
James doesn't want Patton Oswalt or Dane Cook flipping out on Twitter again simply because they don't get why people respect his opinion
what'd you expect? It's youtube.
... and then spend about half of each movie comment with that.
Marshal Mathers Patton Oswalt has probably drowned in his own rabid froth and I give Dane Cook six months before he notices.
Also what is IPA beer? Is it imported? Or what?
Hype ruins movies. I️ try to ignore the hype and go into a movie knowing as little about it as possible.
Karnage Fails I agree, that's why I don't look at my UA-cam a week before a game is released so it isn't spoiled for me.

Avatar was just an okay film to me. It was amazing at the time because the CGI and 3D blew me away, but looking at it now it's just way too long and an okay romance, scifi film. It's a chore to watch through now.
Explicit Tech Let me tell you a little secret: nobody likes Avatar. When it came out, yeah people loved it, but today, nobody gives a shit about it.
The one time I saw it, I was picking out tropes left and right. Actually using the name "Unobtainium" for its Unobtainium, however, made it really hard to take seriously.
The Matrix resonates with people because it is an excellent metaphor for how the world actually works. It's sort of like They Live in that regard.
Im burnt out on the matrix memes though. Everyone thinks theyre enlightened when they post one
Profoundly observed. Thanks
The Matrix was fantastic for the period of time it came out and it's still enjoyable to watch now for the fight scenes, but I can definitely understand why someone that didn't see it at that time can be completely disinterested now.
People still reference living in the matrix and taking the red or blue pill all the time.
Who else here enjoys hearing Mr Rolfe talk about his movie opinions.
Props to him for acknowledging Die Hard as a Christmas movie
One of the greatest movies of all time
He also deserves props for acknowledging Gremlins as a Christmas movie too
My Grandmother says it's her favorite Christmas movie.
Bruce Willis himself has said Die Hard is not a Christmas movie, so I have no idea what to believe!
And Gremlins!
He doesn't even talk about excrement at all! I legit thought that was some obsession of his & not the character.
That's called acting.
R
And the other youtubers constantly making shitty jokes...you aren't funny!!!
This is excatly how I feel about superhero stuff.
@@jeremiahgrayest pretty much all of them
@@jeremiahgrayest Bully Maguire has rent and pizza time
Some of the older ones are decent, but I generally agree. I would rather watch something else.
I’ve never been into super heroes, I’ve watched like 3 because my friend needed someone to watch ‘em in theaters with but I don’t ever go out of my way to watch them.
That’s just like, your opinion, man
I'm right there with you on Donnie Darko. What a really confusing flick, and the whole "It's awesome!" cacaphony from those around me about how great it was always confused me even more.
I guess it didn't click with you as much as with others, myself included bc its one of my fav movies and one where I understand the main character the most
