    Happy new years guys!!! Stock photography vs videos - which do you think pays more? I know some of you have had a different experience from us - we'd love to hear more about it!

      For me it is the photo side. I have been doing stock for about six month and all of my sells have been photo. I have about 800 images up on Shutterstock with 400 in my specialty and have had 177 sells including one that sold for $22 (that was a nice surprise). On video I have about 80 clips up and none have sold.

      Where do you have your videos posted? Do you have them in multiple places?

      @@jdandkylestock3482 Just on shutterstock. The videos are not in my main subject area but in tourism and of places not real popular yet. So not a strong body of work yet.

    I agree on the keywording, it eats up a lot of time. I am trying to build up Keyword banks for subjects that I do often so I can cut and past those in but with my subject matter every photo needs some personal work.

      yaaaas good idea Adventures with Gumjuwak! We're currently using Xpiks for our keywording process. We just found out you can also save lists of keywords in the software for different subject matters! Should help us spend less time on keywording in the future.

    thats weird how can you spent more time on one photo then one video? i use presets for the whole batch so i have to move like maybe 1 or 2 sliders for a photo and thats it. Video takes me a lot of time everything takes long to load(effect as stabilizer etc.)and exporting time is very long aswell as i have a older pc. Also my footage preformed sadly this month i sold one video on deposit photos for 5 dollar and thats it >.< Maybe some sales on istock but i can see that only a month later and the sales i got there are most times like 1 dollar for a video. Kinda sad if you think about it.

      Charlotte's playground - yeah we got like 0 video sales this last month in december! So sad. The time in photo editing comes from photoshoping out logos primarily. All the filtering and batched presets are easy/ fast enough, but every now and then we deep dive into a photo to remove dust or logos.... Or if it was an indoor image, we're paying a little more attention to our noise/ grain. :)

      @@jdandkylestock3482 I see i used to do that aswell. i dont mind 1 or 2 logo's but when i see its time consuming i just submit the image as editorial. sorry about your sales so it might be just a poor month for most poeple in general.

    This is a very interesting experiment you have conducted. Are you going to continue to invest your time into stock, or invest the extra time into your day job and/or leisure? Seems like the stock agencies, camera companies, and the end users of your work are getting a good deal. Earnings per image has declined very significantly over the past decade. I imagine video will do the same as more is produced.

    • @jdandkylestock3482
      @jdandkylestock3482  4 роки тому

      Yes, I agree! I think you're totally right. I think while video will start to decline in cost, I could see 4k and 8k continue to earn more for a little while. I think 1080p and 720p sales are already lower than they used to be! But also really curious what a healthy portfolio might look like over time as we keep adding! We're also looking into more automated solutions for different parts of the process and trying to make the workload as easy as possible so it really doesn't feel like work! (That's the goal anyway!) As for our day job, we run a wedding photography business. We're always looking to make that business better of course, but we're getting restless! We wanted to try our hand at some other forms of photography!

      @@jdandkylestock3482 Sounds good. I look forward to seeing how you go. I have done a bit but it is just a hobby for me. I started about the same time as you. Have uploaded about 50 photos and 10 vids. Have made about $180 USD so far. Haven't done much for the last couple of months as the sky has been very smokey in Australia due to the fires. I like blue sky days.

      Paul - didn't know you were in Australia! Sorry to hear that. I think Nicole Glass did a video recently and she mentioned it might be worth it to take pictures of the smokey skies with the fires in Australia - it's relevant editorial content people are looking for.

      @@jdandkylestock3482 Yeah. I thought about that but it has been very unhealthy to be outside in the smoke so I decided to pass on it. The actual fires are outside of the cities and I didn't want to intentionally travel into dangerous fire areas. I'll just wait until the skies clear again.

    i first thought of paying a company aswell for keywording my photos. But you know the problem with that is the knowledge of the keyworder. Let say you shoot a animal or plant what are the chances the keyworder knows the exact species and all this information about it? lets say you shoot a landmark in a town. The person doesnt know whats on the photo. Because of this you lose a lot of sale potential lets say not almost all. The same counts for video. Giving a % might seem like a good idea but if the keywording is crap.. i say it will depend on your type of content if this will work for you. Also keywording is expensive for photos 0,50 to 1,50 dollars per photo. it would take me probbebly 1-2 years to earn that back with that batch unless there are some really good sellers in it. If you give a 40% away you lose big money aswell on the long run.

      @jdandkylestock3482  4 роки тому +2

      Excellent points Charlotte's playground! Especially about the keyworder's knowledge on the topic. Uggggh.... it's just our absolute least favorite part! Haha

      @@jdandkylestock3482 hihi yes i know the feeling >.< the best thing you can do is to photograph subjects you find interesting. By keywording i learn a lot about animals and plants. but lets say you shoot a football game there not much fun in keywording that xD On general subjects i just search a key word and take a aleardy keyworded simular image and add the needed keywords. it saves a lot of time :P

    video submitting takes me way longer then photos. i don't use blackbox they only have contracts with a few agencies as far as i know. so upload to 9 agencies. like 4 agencies don't load the meta data so i have to copy and paste title, keywords etc. wich is very time consuming.

    • @jdandkylestock3482
      @jdandkylestock3482  4 роки тому +1

      Yeppp! Super aggravating when the meta data doesn't carry over! What video stock agencies do you recommend submitting to based on your experiences this past year? We're considering using blackbox since we're only currently uploading video to 3 platforms!

      @@jdandkylestock3482 sorry thats hard to tell im more experienced in stock photography. i started only like 5 months ago with video. i got most video sales on dreamstime and pond5. how ever keep in mind that a adobe stock sale for example is 3x times the amount of just a sale on pond or dreamstime. how ever i only got one sale on adobe stock for around 35 dollars and 20 dollars on shutterstock for HD. No sales on canstock and 123rf( but i only have 100 online there they are not reviewing my content even after contacting them multiple times they are in review status now for months now). I stock is montlhy sales but the most i got for a video is 3 dollars. someties you only get like 50 cents for a video >.
