If you've been learning how to sell photos online, are new to learning how to sell photos on Shutterstock, and currently on the path to make money with stock photography in general, this Shutterstock update to their earnings structure may or may not take you by surprise.

Petitions are a waste of time. The bean counters at SS could not care less about a few hundred signatures.
Boycotts are a waste of time and money. SS has already taken this into account and could not care less.
The only thing that will make a difference are those with huge portfolios of 200,000 or more. If these people stop uploading and move to another agency or create an agency of their own then Shutterstock will sit up and take notice.
In the mean time photographers will have to do what they have to do.
Taking your portfolio down is stupid. Why eliminate an income stream, now matter how meager. The photos are already there.
Disable your port if you have to.
If you continue to upload to SS then you have to figure that any money you spend in creating your work will probably not be recoverable with the new rates.
NO new props, NO new equipment, NO trips. Not even in town.
You can't get your money back at 10 cents a picture.
The levels are fake. They are a rip off.
I'm a level 4 and most of my pictures get me 10 - 17 cents. Just like beginners.

This is a bad time for all of us, specially when we are looking closely into Google Trends comparing Pond5 / Dreamstime / Shutterstock / Gettyimages / Adobe Stock
Then you understand that making money with the rests is very hard. I see only one solution for the situation, Building a social stock website, making a parallel campaigns:
    1. Telling all the contributers to join the new place and earn a fair comission.
    2. Tell customers to come and buy on a platform that is not exploiting contributors.
That is the only vision I can see, after the shift Shutterstock did with actually burying their contributors.

I've decided to carry on uploading to Shutterstock for the time being, but I will only give them 3000 resolution images, which they're welcome to sell for 15c. If a buyer wants a full resolution image of mine they will have to go to Istock, Adobe and Dreamstime who will all get my full resolution images. I don't sell a lot on Dreamstime but a big shout out to them as they've increased the contributors share by 10% for the time being

This is from recent, public SEC filings. During the week when you're groveling over 10 cent commissions:

John Oringer, Founder, sold 46,573 shares for $1.7 million, June 1-3, 2020.

I think the best thing to do is to disable your images on Shutterstock. If Shutterstock does not goes back to how it was I would delete my portifolio. If you don't do this other Stock sites will follow Shutterstock and lower their prices too. To prevent this to happend it's important to show that they will lose contributors and good images. My advice is therefore to leave Shutterstock. It will be a large job to put the images on other sites, but I think it's smart in the long run.

I have an idea that can ACTUALLY work, how about all Shutterstock Contributors become shareholders of Shutterstock (SSTK is the ticker symbol). When you are a large shareholder in a company you have a MUCH larger voice. Now will one person buying the stock at about $60 per share have an impact? No. But if all 100,000+ contributors invest and buy their stock, WE as a larger collective WILL have a say.👍

Game theory says that no one or almost no one will give up some earning to receive NO Earnings, so shutterstock wins. The only way this can actually work is if contributors have bargaining power and since millions of people can't be united into a bargaining unit, shutterstock wins. The only thing that might work is a class action suit because shutterstock used contributor images to train their AI without remuneration or ability to opt out. This is recent. Class action law suit.

It would be nice to put a dent in shutterstock's stock value so other stock companies would have less incentive to follow them in this reduction to near elimination of contributing artist incentives. Shutterstock, Inc. (SSTK) let's all give their stock a helping hand down, it is possible to boycott shutterstock for a time. I know some of you can't lose the pay even if it is much less, most of us use this as extra money and we can move or just quit so if you can't drop shutterstock turn off your account on the first of the month for a few days so you have some voice in this. Keep it off for as long as you can afford to or in the end you will be getting 10 cents for each sale, oh yea that is what's happening now right.
Tell everyone sell (SSTK) fast, Maybe we can discourage this Reboot to the bottom every year and 10 cents a pic my bleep!

I was thinking that I was getting on level 1 by the the end of may 2020, but for this year and the rest of the year I am earning the % for the current download step I am on right now. That is the only "fair" thing for this year: I found this message on peta pixel: The article initially stated that users would be downgraded to “Level 1” on June 1st. In fact, they will be assigned a level based on their “download count year to date.” They will not be “reset” to Level 1 until January 1st, 2021, unless they have less than 100 downloads in 2020 so far. So FYI at all.

Lol after SS dropped their big news, we kind of dropped it for a while... Didn't feel like contributing for a while. We're slowly adding to our portfolios again, but only from our sessions we've already been hired to shoot. We're not really making much in the way of unique photos just for stock anymore. That and we're contributing more to Wirestock now as well.

I have been doing stock photography for over 30 years. This is the biggest hit I have ever see in this industry. I have to disagree with you analysis, deactivating your account will work the best, letters will not make a difference at all to a CEO who is making 5 mil. A year. The problem is getting all the creators to agree On One Direction. And that will never happen, because shutter stock has over 1 million contributors all over the world. Getting that many people all on the same page will be a daunting task to say the least. So large corporations will dictate the rules and people will scurrying around making pennies on all of their hard work. If any of us keep submitting to this company, I guarantee you others will follow suit. Because they will need to compete with shutterstock and there low prices. Good luck to you in all your endeavors.

Oh wow! Thank you for your incredible insight! That's crazy this is a bigger hit than anything else you've seen in the industry! Wow. I had no idea it was that crazy! We are very new to stock and don't have the first hand knowledge/ experience that comes with decades of perseverance! Scary times indeed.

Richard, funny you should ask that! We JUST created an instagram for this UA-cam channel. Meant to share it in this video but forgot to mention it! It's @jdandkylestock. We're planning on posting there when we share videos there as well as any other small insights we stumble across. :) Our main instagram for our wedding photography (if you happen to be interested) is @jaimiedeephotography
