My wife and I aren't afraid to use non big name lenses. She's used a viltrox 85mm f1.8 for 3 years and never once had an issue. Picture quality has always been excellent
The TTArtisan 75mm f/2 has become my favourite lens lately for how small and light it is, any FE options for a compact 135mm? - maybe an f/2.8 one or something? - This Viltrox is great but it's sooooo huge.
I love a good 135. I have two Pentax 135 lenses 2.5 and a 3.5 both vintage manual lenses. But this amazing. When they create zooms Sony and Sigma are in trouble. I have the 20mm Viltrox in full frame and soon I will get the photo. I hope they come out with a Lab 35 and 85.
The 75MM 1.2 is sublime. I have an XT3 and a S5ii with a Sigma 85MM 1.4 and TBH I like the bokeh and rendering of the 75MM more. Insane amount of lens for $500. Near top tier at any price.
Totally agree that Viltrox, and some other 3rd party manufacturers, are now turning out some incredibly sharp lenses. But have we reached the limit of sharpness in the same way that we have probably maxed out on Megapixel’s? These new 3rd party lenses all seem to be large both in size and weight, following the Sigma route, whilst Sony is reducing size and weight whilst maintaining or further improving quality. Yes, they are obviously more expensive but, if you can afford it, they are much easier to carry and still work better with AF and in body stabilisation.
Thank you Mark! This was a great introduction. I hope maybe you’ll come back and do a full review on it after using it for a while. It sure looks like a beauty!
Hope they continue to make more great aps-c lenses in the future too. The 27mm and 75mm are my two most used lenses right now. Thinking about trying out their 13mm and 56mm f1.4. But happy to see they are also making strides in the full frame world!
If it didn't say Viltrox on the side, I'd think i was looking at a G master too. I knew this brand was gonna be worth keeping an eye on after seeing the quality of their 75mm aps c.
Unfortunately Sony and Nikon have 5x the market share for mirrorless cameras that the L mount alliance does. Probably not financially viable to make L mount lenses.
Well, I’m not sure of the exact number but it was pretty early. You have great content delivered in an educational and entertaining manner. Way better than that purple guy. Haha! (I’d use an emoji, but as a boomer, don’t know what they all mean).
I haven’t tested the Samyang, but I do find that samyang generally has more flare and ghosting due to the lens coatings. my guess is that this Viltrox will be better optically because it’s s good as the GM. but I can’t be sure without side-by side. Dustin Abbot owns the Samyang 135 and prefers the optics of this Viltrox. But it’s a lot bigger
Nice Lens but I can’t wait for this lens. Not sure if Viltrox has some type of agreement that slows down creating AF Lenses for L-Mount but oh well, missed opportunity.
Could you share a Dropbox link to images comparing sharpness, CA, etc. to the GM to help with decisions for ourselves? (And if you could compare the Samyang/Rokinon 135mm f/1.8, even better 🙂) Would be much appreciated. Thanks for the review.
Another well-made video! Thank you Mark! I'm glad I decided not to wait for the Viltrox a few months ago. I bought the Samyang 135mm F1.8, it is currently significantly cheaper. It's almost half as heavy and it's sharper! And for all DxO users; There is a lens module for the Samyang.
the quality of the glass are amazing, even amazing at that price point! but I think if you're shooting sport/action stuff, the GM probably would outshine viltrox in AF factor, if fast AF is not a priority, this lens is totally worth to buy against GM
For people on a budget it might be a better choice than the Sony version but the Sony 135mm is the sharpest and highest quality lens I've ever used. I have the 50mm 1.4 GM and 35mm 1.4 GM also but that 135mm gm is just ridiculously sharp and A step above and it's so fun to use.
It's a lot smaller and lighter. My Samyang 35-150 weighs 1,315g, whereas my Samyang 135/1.8 is 901g. The 135 seems small and light after I've been using the 35-150 for a while.
Mark, I forgot in which video you showed K&F concept CPL filter. Could you recommend me which one to get? I only want CPL filter that doesn’t reduce image quality
at least it has an LCD screen unlike Sony with nothing. From Canon to Sony, this was the hardest part of the transition and I still hate using Sony lenses because of the missing lens reader.
I shoot tons of RE, both photo and video - picked up the Viltrox 16mm 1.8 to leave on my ZV-E1 so I didn't have to use my photo wide-angle zoom.... It's sharper than anything that I had at that focal length... NO focus breathing....autofocus works very well, not that I use it... Everything renders beautifully. Wow. $550. It's a tad heavy, but no big deal - balances on my gimbal with no problem.
The Samyang seems tp be a great lens, but the coatings on Samyang lenses aren't usually this good so you'll get more ghosting and lack of contrast in certain situations. But I'll try to get it in for a comparison
Viltrox is making some amazing lenses. I, for one, love 16mm 1.8. But this one is a miss. With Samyang 135 1.8 being a bit cheaper, much lighter (even lighter than G-master) and just as sharp or sharper according to some reports, I cannot see a reason why one would choose this behemoth of a lens.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Will check the detailed comparison when it comes out. However, it's difficult to be a class above the lens that is already nearly flawless. The weaker part of the Samyang is supposed to be the AF. Maybe it's not super fast from infinity to close, but for me it focused on flying bats in virtual darkness, and not just against a clear sky ).
I have the Sigma 135mm f/1.8 Art lens, but it's in Nikon F-mount. I still have a D810, but I rarely use it opting to use my Nikon Z7 or other full-frame Sony Alpha cameras instead. When I went to use the Sigma lens, I have to use an adapter which is...fine, I guess. I recently ordered this new Viltrox lens and plan to sell my Sigma. Do you think the Viltrox is as good as the Sigma optically (i know you said it was up there with Sony and Sigma)? I mean, really as good or just kind of in the same ballpark? Also, do you think the auto-focus is reliable? I get that it's fast, but fast is worthless unless it's reliable. I'd be interested in opinions since the reviews I've seem compare it to the Sony lens, but I haven't seen any comparisons (real comparisons, not just side mentions) with the Sigma Art lens.
this F1.8 lens has the same depth of field as any other F1.8 lens. The aperture value is the absolute variable, not the focal length as many people fondly think. In practice, it is not possible to maintain the focus distance when changing the focus if I need to have the same composition. A longer focal length therefore requires a greater focus distance which compensates for the depth of field to the same value. The focus of the lens only affects the perspective. The depth of field is determined only by the physical aperture number. So I always get more background blur with the 50/1.4 lens than with the 85/1.8 or 135/1.8. Not only a practical but also a mathematical proof can be provided :-)
Otherwise, I agree that the lens is amazing. I already own the FE 16/1.8 and found that the LCD is useful when shooting the night sky when the camera is pointed upwards :-)
It looks good. Christopher Frost reckons the Samyang is slightly sharper, and a bit cheaper but has no aperture ring. Tough choices. I’m looking forward to their zooms. I’d love a 18-50 F2,8 or something like that.
I was able to get the Samyang for $540 from Amazon during Prime Days last year. For me, it is good enough that it would be difficult to justify replacing it with the Viltrox.
Any comparison to the Samyang 135 1.8? I got it used through Amazon and have shot basketball with it as well as portraits. Typically shooting it from the corner, tracking / af is good with my a7iv, but it struggles on the a7iii. I’ve considered the Sony, but can’t justify 2k, and I think Sigma’s 135 is a little older (I think emount adapted). Might try and take this one for a spin!
Viltrox didn't "blow" anyone "out of the water". Christopher Frost found the Viltrox to be roughly comparable to Samyang's 135/1.8. Viltrox just released the lens and is already discounting it to compete.

I'm a big fan of the physical markings on aperture rings, and the thing that concerns me here is that you have to turn on the camera to know the aperture setting. Also, the primary focus on the information screen is distance and not aperture; plus there are three pieces of information to look at on the screen, which doesn't make it so straightforward. @MarkBennettCameraCrisis Certain Sigma lenses can. It depends on the quality of the motors. Sony's recent lenses have the best motors. Nikon's lenses have the best optical quality. These other lenses may be cheaper, but there is still no "free lunch" in engineering. The only reason to buy a Viltrox is price.
As much as I want every prime GM lens I can't justify $2100 for a focal length I probably won't use a lot. $899 for a product almost as good seems like a fair trade though.
As per Christopher Frost the SAMYANG 135mm 1.8 is sharper than this lens, same AF speed and accuracy. The Samyang is a bit "more" prone to flare but it's around 150USD cheaper.

As much as I want every prime GM lens I can't justify $2100 for a focal length I probably won't use a lot. $899 for a product almost as good seems like a fair trade though.
Where is the z mount?
I'm sure it will be out soon. They started with E-Mount
and my L-MOUNT KEEPS CRYING!
Viltrox use to make budget lenses. Now they are taken the path of Sigma and Tamron. Make lenses expensive but just a couple dollars cheaper than GM.
do I have to charge the lens too? I don’t wanna charge anything else😭
no don't worry. You just plug it in to update it. No charging required ever
Next let’s wait Viltrox release a fullframe 1.2 :)
Time to add a 2nd lens to the Viltrox collection 😏
Samyang's equivalent costs less, is almost half the weight and image quality is stellar. There's absolutely nothing going for Viltrox with this lens.
They're both excellent lenses.
As per Christopher Frost the SAMYANG 135mm 1.8 is sharper than this lens, same AF speed and accuracy. The Samyang is a bit "more" prone to flare but it's around 150USD cheaper.
It would be interesting to see this one compared to the Samyang.
I hope viltrox makes an 18-50mm for apsc
Seems cool, but id like something more flexable then a fixed 135.
yes - very specific focal length
