TOTALLY AGREE ENRICHMENT IS SO IMPORTANT!! Sabzi!!!! Basil!!! I missed you guys!!! 😍😍😍
QOTD: taking them outside, feel the wind and sun, change up their enclosure decor, let them experience new things, even meeting other critters safely, mine like the view they have from their windows, they get to see a bunch of the Okanagan valley from their enclosures, but that’s not enough, they get the run of our second story deck that’s “fenced off” the front yard, my adult male tours around with me when walking to get the mail, or grabbing a couple groceries (just about made a woman pee herself in self checkout the other day 😂) of course they have the run of the house, different foods, I pack their daily salads with tons of extras and switch it up all the time, try different greens and salad toppers, different feeders, tong feed and then let inverts loose at different times so they can hunt (making sure they get them all) etc etc, give them something to climb on or react with while bathing..there’s so much you can do
Sabzi eating that raw egg is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen!!

QOD answer: The most easily dismissed forms of enrichment for your animals are still important. Keeping good changes in elevation in the enclosure, especially for climbing animals. Don't forget that turtles and tortoises climb, too! Changing the water feature can be very fun for the animals, particularly if they are animals that enjoy high humidity. The more the water flows and stays clean, the happier they generally are. Plenty of tubers will have information on how to make little waterfalls and such using rocks and the background. Be sure to keep the filters clean so the water moves properly. It's also not a bad idea to never do a full water change. If you're using substrate, be sure to make sure it has proper drainage and doesn't become completely waterlogged. Bioactive enclosures do this better if you have multi-layers of substrate in addition to the clay balls and screen. Make sure the water isn't higher than the screen. This answer took an entirely different turn, but I hope it helps.

Question of the day answer: I live in new york state where we get really cold winters, but we also get hot summers, so I like to put my shingleback skinks in outdoor enclosures so they can get some natural uvb among other things. it really brings out their natural behaviors, unlike what you'd see indoors.

  • @c5365

QOTD: Okay, so this isn't really a proper answer to the question of the day...but I have a funny story to share. I keep Blue Death Feigning beetles (and a couple other like species) in an enclosure together. I read online that Hermit Crabs benefit from having their enclosures re-arranged occasionally in order to provide enrichment. So...I decided to rearrange the decor in the beetle enclosure so they wouldn't be bored. Long story short...they didn't like it. They ran around in confused, angry circles for quite a while afterwards and refused to eat. I suppose I learned that beetles and hermit crabs are not similar. Whoops!

QOTD: I have a cat. No reptiles yet. But raising a cat still has it's challenging aspects of enrichment. I feel that my cat needs to be played with everyday. He is an inside cat. So he needs to have time run around and chase and run. Even if I am too tired. He needs his litter cleaned DAILY. He doesn't want to go in a dirty spot. Just like you and I don't.

    • @breannathompson9094
      @breannathompson9094 3 роки тому +2

I agree with this, if i don't play daily with my cat, you bet she'll either darting out of the front door or attacking my ankles lol! All animals will try let you know or they seem happier when they have some enrichment.

  • @rickcroney1286

We use a variety of different types of enrichment: different food items; tong feeding/hunting; indoor play area set up in a kid pool; indoor and outdoor climbing structures for the snakes and chameleon; outdoor adventures in the grass for the snakes, uromastyx and Russian tortoise and we try to provide large enclosures to encourage as many natural behaviors as possible.

    Awesome video!!
We recently got a juvenile ball python and he has some mites, so we are currently treating him and have him in a sterile enclosure. I wasn't sure what would be appropriate to use, so at first I just had his hides and the paper towel, but I noticed he seemed to be less active. Last night an idea to put some crumpled up paper bag and a piece of fake plant that I found which has never been used. He immediately started exploring the whole enclosure. I felt bad that I hadn't thought of a solution before and it's definitely still a far cry from the set up he will have when he's out of mite jail, but I'm glad he's at least got something in there now.
I've been watching Reptiles and Research a lot and loved his video about ball python diet. I haven't tried yet, but I intend to start (at least occasionally) including day old chicks into my snakes diet as well.

I love to switch up the bowls and spots where I feed. Puzzles can be great too! Ball training is great too! I'd love to see if these guys would pick that up. My whites tree frog, Ivy, loves her red ball for feeding. My pixi frog also uses a red ball to show its time to eat. We use him in educational shows for parties and schools so not being aggressive was a big deal!!

QOTD: I created an enclosure with a canopy zone that's very open and ventilated and a ground zone with wood and bark for my anole. The canopy zone has vines and the top of an hibiscus tree with flowers too. The bottom zone has lower light plants and a lot of hides. I think it's neat! I also give my anole some fruit flies, he's bigger now, but still eats everything that moves, so I can give him a lot and he has to run everywhere to get them. I never trained him for handling, but he's now okay with eating while my hand is still in his terrarium because he's that food motivated.

QOTD answer: Giving your pet enrichment can vary between the species and the individual, but in a nutshell, providing an environment where a pet can perform all it's natural behaviors (burrowing, climbing, etc) and also sometimes training it (target training is a great example that can be achieved with nearly all species of pets) can help with mental stimulation. A lot of times, providing toys made of natural materials for a pet to destroy can also help. Dog foraging toys can also work well for a variety of animals (dogs, cats, parrots, rabbits, etc) and some people also drag a mouse or rat all over the snake's enclosure to let the snake "hunt" for the food as well.

I really enjoy making changes in my crested geckos enclosure. They come out at night and immediately go to investigate what these new things are. Smelling, licking, climbing, you can just see they are very interested. While with my croc skinks I'm not so sure, I feel like changing their enclosure just stresses them out more so I mostly stick to feeding them various insects.

When I do a deep clean of an enclosure I always like to mix it up. I'll swap out some decor or move everything around. I'm also always looking for new decor, and I pick up fake plants from craft stores. I like to provide a variety of textures and colors for my reptiles to explore.
I also enjoy making decor, and I have a little stool for my ball python I made from PVC and paracord. He loves it, and I've got a hide on the top, so he spends 90% of his days there.

My blue tongue absolutely loves quail eggs - he really likes them hard boiled, as they are easier to eat than when raw, and it also still gives him some enrichment in trying to crack the egg with his jaws.
QOTD: I like to leave the enclosure door open for my animals while I'm able to supervise them. Even if they are too shy to come out other than poking their head out in curiosity, it exposes them to a lot more smell and sound than they would otherwise have with the door closed. I've even noticed my blue tongue likes to come and see what's going on when he hears me watching a movie or tv show on my computer nearby. one day I'd like to figure out how to set up a little ramp for him so he can come out of his enclosure during a time like this when he wants.

For the QOTD I think it’s very important to occasionally change the environment for the animal to thrive by maybe changing the hardscape so they have new places to explore. Unless for some specific animals this causes stress problems or maybe not finding their food. But is see it like if we lived in same room for all our life we would be extremely bored and fed up

Would introducing something like cooked quail eggs mess with being able to continue feeding f/t rodents if an animal is naturally not a rodent eater?
Example: for Solomon island ground boas or hognoses, which are notorious for struggling to get onto f/t rodents in the first place.
I would want to add food enrichment, but this concerns me

When I asked in a bioactive group I’m in if I could introduce eggs or possibly fish into my picky hognoses diet, they advised against it saying it would likely make them more picky. However, I’m not so sure that would be the case! Maybe he is picky because he needs a variety in his diet.

I agree enrichment is a Necessity ! I see so many enclosures that make me loose hope. They put a snake or a lizard in an enclosure (often a tub) with just substrate and a bowl of water or maybe a hide. Some throw flowers on the ground as well, they need different levels, different smells, textures and activities as well as a variety of food when applicable to the pet. People should not get an animal they won't give enrichment too! Most animals can get some enrichment by being held or put on some sort of indoor climbing activity. Watching the animals will be enjoyable as well as necessary. Even just throwing in an empty paper towel roll gives enrichment. When it's safe, letting them slightly encounter another animal briefly. A tepid bath...So much can be done. My snakes and crested geckos have multilevel enrichment in their enclosures, from hammocks, to bridges, to turtle docks, large and small hides, all types of sterilized woods, plants. This last time we deep cleaned and added new textured substrate, a different brand even, we won't do this often, because I want them comfortable, but It's enrichment too. I move around their hides, food dishes (for the geckos) and always provide fresh water. The geckos get different flavors of CGD and crickets. I have tried the superworms and none of them were receptive. We bring them and and let them visit each other, like we do our snakes. We look for different hides (from free ones like paper drink holders) to fancy store bought ones. We sterilize them and switch them around sometimes too. We don't move obvious favorites. For the snakes we cover 3/4 or a tad more of the 40gl enclosure with thick aspen and the other part where we put the water, with brown packing paper (saved from shipped orders) we place the water dishes on the paper, so it dries quickly but it also gives a different smell and texture. Two of my snakes love to crawl under it and be right on the glass. It's endless. I will not stop adding enrichment.

I can almost guarantee he got a 3 pack from Dollarama in Canada… I’m in Toronto and have the exact same ones! Terracotta plant saucers as someone else said, glazed on the inside! I use them for my reptiles too!!

From personal experience I can say never males and females want a decent amount of personal space. I let a couple go in my house for about a week and they all went to a different room.

You may have read this in another comment, But my understanding is youtube has been controlling animal feeding videos more tightly and probably supressing them for at least a couple months. This is likely due to animal abuse and fighting videos. Emily and Ed(Snake Discovery) have mentioned this issue as well. It would be sad if even eating eggs was an issue now.

I recommend cooking the eggs in a different way , I believe microwave destroy the nutrients
