Welcome back everybody! Now you all know why you haven’t been seeing much of Basil lately 😅! I’m feeling pretty confident that taking this step will greatly improve my ability to tame him and bring him round! What do you think? Don’t forget to answer today’s question of the day! Have a great weekend!

Wonderful idea. Sometimes we ALL make decisions and later are dumbfounded by them like...🤦‍♀️🤦‍♂️why did I think this would X Y or Z? Yea, Basil will probably hide for awhile, hopefully only a couple days. As soon as he will eat in front of you its gonna be all rainbows and satanic leaf tail geckos from there! Your energy/vibe likely speeds the bonding process up imo. Once an animal takes that first baby step towards trust with you...boom, they all love you. You are very calming. You have so many awesome pets, you find joy in times where it seems there is none....basically you're stupid and I hate you!
JK! I do NOT hate you....it was a joke ppl. I'm gonna go kick rocks now, maybe pout a bit😂
Looking forward to some Basil videos soon...shhhhh, shhh st-stop, soon is not unrealistic. 🤷‍♀️😬👍

I had a foster cat who was very wild. Didn't use the litterbox because it was too exposed, only ate from the food dish in the middle of the night, hid all the time and when we caught her she just froze and acted like a lump. I tried handling her regularly and petting her and it wasn't working, so finally we arranged for her to become a barn cat. I've since learned a bunch of tricks I could've tried had I known them back then.

I adopted a hamster from craigslist and she was really really shy. I managed to see her on a pet camera and she was eating, drinking, and exploring the enclosure, but would run away if I went into the room and only start being active again when the lights are turned off.
I managed to get her slightly used to me, but she just doesn't like being handled and now she won't run away if I enter the room but she still doesn't want to interact with me and that's ok. Sometimes, some individual animals just want to not interact with you, as long as that animal is eating, drinking, and gets a large enclosure along with enrichment, I think that's ok.

I have a few dwarf monitors that are quite flighty. My female red Ackie is a tank when it comes to eating but absolute does not like any interaction with me. Then I have a young gilleni who is high strung, seems to be suffering from stress. Not to sure as of what is causing the stress. Has quite a few hides in slate rocks and wood, but he definitely has issues when it comes to confidence. Only will eat on occasion while I'm around. Wishing you the best of luck

My second blue tongue skink was my hardest to tame. When I got him he was a baby and had barely been handled. He came to me with a very hurt toe and would only hiss and bite my fingers. He is now a plump happy little dude who gently takes treats from my fingers and sometimes likes sitting on the couch with me. It did take a few months.

It seems to me that a future extra benefit to people sourcing young lizards from you is that you will do some handling and socializing early in their lives. I remember that when you got basil, he was not socialized at all. Large-scale commercial breeders don’t have the time. So that can become one more value added to all the other excellent reasons for people to choose a captive-bred animal, especially from someone who gives some individual attention to the babies.
Sabzi is such a beautiful, responsive animal. It’s a pleasure to watch her, and her tolerance lets you photograph from close up. The camera makes her curious instead of afraid.

I have two geckos in my room, which is where I am most of the time. Can say the least that I've had mixed results. One of them, sleeps out from under any of the cork bark or plants in his enclosure, moves around during the day and just watches me. The other never comes out during the day unless I'm not around, is always behind his cork bark until I get in bed, and only ever peeks out to watch me. The former is great to handle once he's out of his tank, and the latter is still a nightmare, constantly racing up my arms to get on my back or getting ready to launch himself and run away. Still trying to work on gaining his trust.

    Hi Dayan,
I hope you’re doing well. Green tree monitors are highly smart animals and I’m sure you know that.
I’ve maintained Green tree monitors for many and many years , and the best way I’ve found to create a bond with my monitor lizards , was to put them in a « small » ( 24x18x36 ) enclosure with a little or even maybe no hiding places . Because if you give the opportunity to Basil to « run away » or hide because of your presence nearby the terrarium, he will do it , even if you’re not very close to terrarium, he needs to see you A LOT , so that he can be used to you and know that you’re not a threat .
    Have a great day 😁😁

I really hopes he calms down over time.
I've had a long road of getting my rabbits comfortable with me for years now, with a lot of ups and downs. I got them after they spend a year at a shelter(one almost from birth. The shelter is great but they have a lot of animals to care for, not only two very timid and scared rabbits) At first we would hardly see them, we only knew that they ate because it disappeared. Over the years they have become a little more comfortable with people around, but still prefer to be left alone mostly. They come for food and depending on the day will eat out of my hand, but they'll never be 'lap bunnies' so to speak. I love them regardless and am glad we've been able to give them a home where they can spend their days without people constantly wanting to interact with them. It's still a bit sad to see them run inside their shelter when you get too close or move too suddenly. I always dread when I have to take them to the vet to get their shots, because they means catching them and taking them out of their pen, which usually results in going back a lot of steps when it comes to their trust in me.

@@Reptiliatus the only problem I would see is she eat all his food but usually keeping tree monitors together, they will get comfortable with each other and one of the other will learn from each other. An they have a sense of feeling one another so they can bond faster , I have 4 pair of tree monitors, yellow, blue, green , and black, all in the same enclosure with no problem. The only thing I see is the male will hog all his food but your the opposite, your female is more attentive, your green tree the same is my green tree pair , the female eat more than the male, but out of the of all my pair, they are the only one laying egg, so the way how I see it, female like the dominant in themselves, I rather have a dominant female than a dominant male, cause the male will hog all the food.

I had a red-ear slider that hated me for legitimately no reason. We think it was my voice, which is low compared to my sister, who ended up being the main caretaker of this turtle. We gave that and another turtle away to a landscaper who had an interest.
I currently struggle currently with one of my toads. His name is Golem. He's a northern brown toad, one of five I'm keeping. He bites at my fingers whenever I try to feed him. I can't write it off as feeding response, either. These animals don't even do this in the wild when you catch them. Sometimes he even screams in the middle of the night, which sort of sounds like a squeaky toy on fire. Since it's a member of an invasive species, there's nothing I can do. The other toads will actually eat out of my fingers. I have three females and two males. Golem, though. Ugh. He's the size of my fist and man, I'm glad I don't have to feed him every day.

I had a male leopard gecko like that. He was always more jumpy and active compared to the female. When he bit, he always drew blood. Thankfully this was very rare, but was contrary to popular belief that a leopard geckos bite only lightly. Maybe only females. He wouldn’t eat immediately before me and hardly ever ate outside the cage. The exception was if a food item was particularly delicious, like a waxworm, and he was too hungry. Otherwise he was beautiful, very large for the species and stocky. Finally I quit breeding of that species and rehomed him.

They have no problem with me being around or doing stuff in the cage/eating with me there watching, but they do not want to be held almost at all. I got a Madagascar Plated Lizard in November. The previous owner said she was very skittish, and didn't have time to spend to tame her. I have the time, but she doesn't seem to want anything to do with anyone. She sometimes will sit and watch while I spot clean her enclosure and give her crickets. Other times she runs around like a maniac, and once she caught me by surprise and escaped by running up my arm and over my shoulder. After watching this video, I think I should move her into the living room, as she is currently in a room I don't go into as often (had originally put her there to quarantine her as I have a Beardie as well). I am concerned though that if she manages to escape again, it will be impossible to find her if she has access to the greater part of the house.

She liked to pounce on people, juggle steak knives and shred every single piece of paper towel/tissue/toilet paper in the house. I got so bad that we litterally had to keep her on a leash in safe zones of our home to avoid any harm coming to her or us. I have no idea how my ex-roomie fared with her after I moved out, but this has been quite the experience...

I had a iguana iguana. He was brilliant for years then one day he became a raving nut case. Wanted to always attack, escaped his inclosure one day and actively stalked towards me. Was fine with my wife but just hated the sight of me. 🤷

Well she is tame but she doesn't necessarily want to hang out with me lol my BP is a sweetie but she kinda just tolerates me being around. You can see how many of your reptiles go to you, interact with you, and don't constantly try to go away from you necessarily. My girl has no interest in sitting with or interacting with me really. I'm trying to slowly build a more comfy relationship with her. It doesn't seem like she is stressed exactly but not totally relaxed either. I really feel the "giant who comes in" sentiment though. I've a screen top and wish I had a front opening enclosure really bad bc I think it would help.

Btw I tried moving her enclosure in the living room and I’ve still only been able to tong feed her as much as I can count on one hand! In over a year...😣 some animals are just so nervous unfortunately

Me and my partner have a range of reptiles; Dumeril boa's, royal python, corn snake, Ridley's racers, hognoses and a crested gecko. We had a litter of Dumeril's and the difference in personalities is immense. Some settled down beautifully while 2 years one the female is still sassy as heck. 1 of Ridley's is very sensitive to the slightest wrong touch, the other one is a lot more chill. Then there's the hognose Fizz who puffs, hisses, bluff strikes and plays a statue when you handle him and he's not getting better lol.
We buy or breed these animals and there's no promise they'll have a personality we'll find acceptable. Some will never relax and be truly comfortable around humans, some calm down really fast, some take a year or 2 or even a lot longer. I can look back on plenty of animals and realise that I thought they were relaxed, but they weren't. I like Kevin McCurley's and Lori Torrini's focus on animal behaviour, body language, and building trust. It can be a challenge but ultimately the personality of the animal often decides the overall outcome and whether they thrive or survive human interaction.

I just got my first crested gecko and he is still pretty young the taming is going good but I’d love to get some tips and tricks. The only problem is that my crested gecko doesn’t accept any small grasshoppers or crickets. My dog on the other hand just isn’t able to be trained he is so stubborn a lovely animal but not one dog trainer that said they could train him.

Qotd: I have a lot of gargoyle geckos (2 adult and a lot of babys) and from the adults (the couple) the male just won't interact with you. But the female likes to get handled and stuff. The male even ran away when I opend the enclosure. Slowly its getting better but he is still really stubborn 😂😶

You probably know this and I noticed the Canadian Coldblood guy doing it but pinning him or any reptile between your thumb and finger like this 12:45 is almost a direct 1:1 with being pinned by a predator. Not ideal for taming.
