So you never responded to my last comment about Sabzi's name? Is it because of his green color and Sabz being the name of color green in Farsi? or is it Sabzi as in general vegetable which again is the meaning of the word Sabzi in Farsi? I mean Basil is a vegetable so it makes sense lol

I think a huge part of their enrichment is adding live feeders, even for my crested gecko (he loves ambushing crickets). I'm also constantly making small adjustments to their scape, adjusting their "weather" by slightly varying temperature, humidity, adding and removing fans, and also just straight up interacting with them.
We also have a cat that likes to help with herp cardio through jumpscares. 😅

Ok So I have MANY animals in my home: 2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 rats, and one White Australian House Chicken (Cockatoo) For the enrichment, I do many many things: cats get treats on different surfaces, like the headboard of my bed and the chair where I sit most days. The dogs get treat balls stuffed with peanut butter and frozen in the summer. The rats have to go through a maze to get their bedtime treats, and the Cockatoo has to find it in the bottom of his cocoanut shell under a mound of shredded paper! Just a few examples!

Wow. Thank you for creating such wonderful videos for us to enjoy. I sooo want to get either a hognose or an egg eater as my first snake. I love them so much. I never would have known that I loved them until I accidentally fell upon Snake Discovery. I had a video of an alligator in a bathtub in my news feed and then checked out her channel then it was on. I'm extremely picky about which reptile channels I dedicate myself to. I can honestly and very thankfully say that your channel is definitely one of the select few. I really like to enrich my reptiles life with bioactive enclosure. The best thing is when you keep a new reptile in sterile tubs with paper towels to see if it's doing okay , and then after a month transfer them in fully bioactive large enclosure with live plants and a lot of branches and rocks . Then you can see that your animal is truly happy . Can't wait to see new tree monitor enclosure!

For my cats I like giving them puzzle toys, or they also tend to pull them out and throw them around themselves. For Keven my bearded dragon, he has a bio active enclosure, so part of his enrichment is hunting down the beetles that develop from escaped superworms.

Not sure if this counts as enrichment. I have two different snakes (C. trivirgata, L. inornatus) that seem to like to burrow for much of their day. Instead of just using one substrate for their respective enclosures, I split each in half with two different types. I don't mix them, and I like to think the choice it gives may make them happy. The warmer side is aspen bedding, and the cooler side is cypress mulch. Each is piled enough to allow for full burrowing. I also deliberately give my tarantulas extra water "dishes", usually from soda caps. They bury them, web over them, even had a blue fang stick one on the outside of it's corkbark, right side up. Thanks for the video.

I handle my crested gecko about once a week so he is accustomed to handling, which makes it easier to check him over for any health issues. Since he doesn’t exactly *enjoy* handling, I keep him distracted by holding him next to my 20 gallon wild betta rubra aquarium. He and the fish are super interested in looking at each other, and it’s definitely an interaction they’d never experience in their wild environments. 😊

It's been a while since I watched, maybe even back when Basil arrived, so I have the pleasure of seeing the HUGE progress you have made with the tree monitors. And they both look 100% healthy and growing. I'm 60 and a wildlife biologist/naturalist, but I have never seen a lizard using its front feet like that, and maybe even weirder was the way he was using his entire front legs to pull the jar toward him like apes and humans do. The proportions make it look eerily similar and indeed like an reptilian anthropoid space alien.🦎 super duper cool! The hand-like dexterity must be a huge advantage for foraging in arboreal habitats, grabbing branches and feeling around in tree holes for grubs, amphibians, etc. Sort of interesting - tool use in species other than humans is extremely rare, but in apes and corvids it usually involves using sticks to poke into tree holes and logs to get insects they can't reach. Arboreal snakes can just go right in the holes. Green tree monitors evolved little monkey arms and hands. 😊 You are doing perfect enrichment by simulating these foraging situations and I'm sure there are many more ways to do it. Here's a tip for other people socializing very shy animals - do it at the same time every day if you can. The predictability helps them learn what is about to happen and associate it with food. Animals respond well to consistency. Can't wait to see the big cage for them.

This is absolutely amazing! This just goes to show how far one can go with the work. I'm incredibly sure these guys as well as other reptiles can bond with people (no I'm not comparing human to reptile emotions.). I have been away for 4mo or so from home since we are trying to move and what have you. It's not easy and my tegu that I've had since he was a hatchling keeps on exhibiting signs of missing me he breaks out of the enclosure searches around the bed to go back in. My wife approaches the enclosure to show me how he is doing and he huffs going back to his basking spot ignoring her completely. She does the same thing a couple days later but this time I talk he looks at the phone and actually it seems like there is recognition he not only doesn't shy away he starts going at the glass. Example three my wife came out to visit me for a week so some of her clothes smelled of me, soooo when she came back from the trip she went to visit some friends and he breaks out of the enclosure. She comes back and he is buried in the clothing in the suit case... when I say I'm trying to not anthropomorphize these creatures I mean it I worked as a vet tech did the studying so has my wife, but dang he is showing all the signs of an animal missing their person. What to do I don't know we are trying to figure something out including potentially getting him a larger enclosure with swinging doors that would be more sturdy to lock shut vs his sliding glass doors that he has pushed the glass doors out.
For the question of the day:
I on occasion would give my tegu a full egg untracked and put it in the tub. I also put a fully adjustable cat harness on him and will take him out into town for further socialization. His diet is varied, bit on occasion we will give him whole prey dragging it around the enclosure making him give chase, then doing a sort of tug of war to stimulate natural behavior such as thrashing and hitting the item against other objects in said enclosure. We recently got him a large rubber ball he can grab and throw but not eat from petsmart to play with when he takes his bath. Constantly trying to think of new ideas for him, although unfortunately live prey items would be incredibly hard to do. When he was younger though he would get blue horned worms, dubias, and even earth worms. It was always interesting to see him finding random cocoons for those that made it to that point.
As far as reptiles go though one can always tell who has put in a ton of work vs not it absolutely shows and I can tell you have done as such.

QOTD: I have cats and I think the most important thing we do is to keep introducing new things. Every few months they get something new in their environment. A new cat tree, a new toy, a set up to allow them a new window view, etc… they’re environment is pretty consistent and in some ways that’s great for them, but they definitely get excited about new experiences! I usually will try to hid their food in Toilet paper rolls, in crumbled up news papers, in small cardboard boxes, in jars filled with food and newspaper, egg cartons filled with food, I hang their food in hard to reach places. I currently have a leopard gecko, fire skink, bearded dragon, red-eyed tree frog, and an abronia graminea. All in bioactive setups. I have a perfect spot for a 4x2x4 tank. Only thing I'm unsure about is if their size would prevent having a bunch of nice plants in a bioactive.

Those monitors are really intelligent. I didn’t know that green tree monitors eat mice. Very nice animals. It would be extraordinary when they will live in the large enclosure together.
As for the question, I think that every animal needs different kinds of enrichment. For example, I sometimes toss the insects in my crested gecko’s enclosure instead of putting them in the bowl.
He then needs to calculate the distance and often he needs to attack them when they are hidden inside foliage or on bark.
I would like to make a fake nest for my rosy boa with smaller frozen mice inside. They are considered nessed predators in the wild. However, my project hasn’t given any result yet. He has learnt to eat from tongs and it is difficult to change him now.

I keep pet rats, and I have many many foraging toys for them to make them work for their food. I also do not free feed them like many people do. When they run out of food they either have to wait for their next meal or eat the food that they have stashed. Some rat owners wrongly believe that they need access to food 24/7 but once rats are adults there is no need for that. I have five different foraging toys that I rotate through for them. I also make sure they have plenty of things to chew on and destroy as that that is a rats favorite pastime. They also get daily exercise outside of their cage. For my leopard gecko, I make sure she has ample hiding spaces and different textures to explore, I also make her chase her food. My crested, I change the cage decor around once a month. I also try doing live food but he doesn't take it, not sure why. I also change up the flavors and brands of his crested diet or even mix them together sometimes. for my tarantulas I make sure they have ample burrowing space (I only have terrestrial ones at the moment) with different textures to explore if they choose to. My hedge hog gets live insects several nights a week and make sure she different things to taste and hide in and interact with (she loves sticking her head in TP tubes and annointing herself with mint) and It is 100 percent essential that she has her wheel to run on.

To give some enrichment to my leopard gecko, I wouldn't be able to just give him some substrate. He doesn't like to dig-weird, I know-but he really loves to climb, hide and sploot. I'm wanting to build him a custom giant "hide" that looks like a rock wall with holes for him to crawl into and passageways between some of them for more enrichment. But make this giant "hide" big enough to take up the cold area of the tank and maybe have spaces I can see him through?
Edit: I would really appreciate any ideas too!

for my bearded dragon I take her out (shes a baby) handle her and play with her, then During feeding time, I put her in a box with leaves and a bunch of hiding spots and put in food (dubia roaches, super worms, etc) and let her find her prey instead of hand feeding

BUG LOVERS! I would suggest going over to Amazon Prime and watching a new 4 part series called 'Bug Out'. It's a true crime/drama about an invert museum, really need to watch all 4 parts. Anyone think we could help Steve get his business back?

For the question of the day I say encourage foraging Behavior we have a habit of tongue feeding or bowl feeding animals which is not really mentally stimulating yeah it's easier on us cuz we know that the animal is eating but a lot of these animals are very smart and inquisitive when I had my rats they love foraging for food and it was so cool to see them using their brain to figure out the puzzle

O and i enrich my youngest boa with a small rack to climb on made from athletic equipment. it has two cross bars to climb to and from and two loops to crawl to and play on inside a open top box so theres no real danger of falling.
what an amazing animal to use its hands like that and accomplish what it wanted to do. awesome!

Hey, I 'm was planing on getting i rather big terrarium with a little waterfall, small water area and JUST plants (no animals because i never had a terrarium and didn't want to start with a big terrarium). When I looked for video's of how to set up a terrarium i stumbled over your videos and now i just cant stop thinking about how beautiful those animals are.
Can you recommend a reptile for a beginner? I was planning on doing a jungle themed terrarium.

I believe enrichment should work in concert with trust. Your pet associates you as providing a food source for them at first; however, they need to feel trust and comfort from you. I think we as owners forget that we are larger than our pets & can be easily thought of as a threat to their safety. My son and his Beardie Stoner, are best pals, but it took a lot of trust and patience for them to bond as they have now. Stoner now refuses to take food with tongs & prefers hand feeding.

I've been learning clicker training with my cat. I wonder, with their intelligence, if your green tree monitors could be taught too.
I'm completely enamoured by the peacock clubmoss I got at the expo. It's such a lovely colour! I got into moss research and found one of your ancient videos and you've definitely improved your video and animal/plant husbandry skills over the years! Still. It was an interesting watch.
