I’m pretty sure my parents accepted their insomnia. The day I moved out was their first night of actual sleep under their own roof. I just realized I’m a selfish person! Lol
Magnificent work. Freese plays exactly what needs to be played. No more, no less. That is a difficult state of mind most drummers can't get to, especially on a live gig.
Eric Gonzalez and that is EXACTLY what Ringo did for the Beatles. He may or may not have been one of the best drummers on the planet but he will always, always, always be remembered as one of the greatest...
@@EverytimeIsleeptoken interesting comparison. I thought his drumming on the team sleep worked quite well in many places, either way it was at least a thoughtful choice and remember that at that time death grips was relatively unknown compared to recent years.
Just think, this song is hard enough, but hes also listening to a click track, plus he has strobe lights in his face the whole time, not to mention the sweat burning his eyes! Josh Freese you should apply for the Mars Mission!
Josh is listening to backing tracks of synth sounds, and whatever else is being played from the computer that is not humanly possible to play, plus his 'click track' is a digital metronome, giving Josh the 'pulse' or tempo of the track, so he can play along to it, and keep the rest of the band in synch.
Евгений Квач Its not a case of the song being difficult, Im saying I love how he plays it, but it is challenging with the strobe lights, sweat in his eyes, and remaining in synch with the backing tracks.
you know shane, I'm sure EVERY of more o less prof drummer has srobelights. but I'm agree with you- NIN concert lights is sure not recommended to an epileptic drummers))) but if serious- I'm really sure- every drummer has an itch (I'm joke (c) recoil) so every drummer has full eyes of sweat and other concert shit. look at the korn (I love NIN more, btw) - there's no less of sweat. so- if you wanna be pro and famous - get ready for sweat and strobo, bro ))
shane parry You must be a musician as that sweat burning your eyes. Too bloody right. For me that was always when I was playing the ride cymbal as my head was at a different angle and ouch yes the burn. It always gave me a start.
Michael Segovia Not kidding. I been watching it for years. He is been drumming since he was 6 years old. He started drumming for Disney as a kid. I watched an interview with him a while back. Very humble guy too.
I don't think I could count how many times I have watched this since he uploaded it. Doesn't matter because it always kicks ass! One of the true masters of drumming at work.
I played this at a gig when I was relatively new to drumming and didn't realize at the time that it's a straight-up country train beat, like on Folsom Prison Blues. Fits perfectly!
Merry Christmas and Happy 52nd Birthday Joshua Ryan Freese. 12/25/72.Orlando, FL . His dad was the director of bands and leader of the Walt Disney World Marching Band at Walt Disney World Resort FL. Mom, a classical pianist and a writer Freese's first job was at Disneyland Park in Southern California as a shoe shine boy with his brother, summer of 1985. His brother is in Green Day now. Truly a musical family. Here's to many more Joshua, cheers!
You’re looking at the highest level of rock drumming right here. Only a trained eye can really understand just how versatile & precise his playing is. A comparison would be Danny Carey “Pneuma.” Watch the Vic Firth drum cam video on here & those double stroke rolls at the beginning that he converts to single strokes, and as smooth as butter. That’s the type of versatility that Josh shows here on those varying snare notes. Both are masters of being able to play softer/lighter notes between a heavy note & that might not sound difficult on paper but try it & you’ll see that even most pro drummers can’t play like that. Josh doesn’t play polyrhythms like Danny but that’s never been his thing but Josh can sit down with any band and nail whatever they throw at him. And in a studio setting, Josh will make every single band sound way, way better. The examples are literally in the thousands.
I first got into Josh’s drumming on Suicidal Tendencies ‘Art of Rebellion’ and have been continually amazed at how his unique style shines through no matter what type of music he’s working with. This version of Wish is stunning. 🤘🖤🤘
Josh has an open handed way of approaching drumming that is very inspirational for this Phillips fan. Freese's work in Slip rehearsals was fun to watch. Mad respect.
I find myself coming back to this video every once in a while and I'm left in shock and amazement every time I watch it. I can never get over how crazy good you are at this, and would love to see you with NIN again one day! Probably my main inspiration for playing the drums.
I have always loved josh's drumming on this song. its crazy clean and energetic. not to mention that sick double base ending starting at 3:50. Its never been played live this great sense!
I only recently learned about Mr freese here, within the last year or so. I'm not a musician or anything I just have an appreciation of music. And goodness gravy, this man right here is mine blowing every time!
that off beat he plays after the first part of each chorus is so good i thought it was a mistake at first. My brain was easily 3 seconds behind how bad ass that is.
Yeah, it’s slightly different than the original recording, but way more interesting and fitting of the song. It also looks like slow-motion for a split second. It tripped up my brain a little bit too, good call man.
Dude is a machine. So fun to watch. I saw them at Red Rocks I think around 2008 and Freese was killing it the whole show. Didn't miss a beat and he was doing crazy stick twirling shit like at 2:59 the whole show. So much fun to watch.
I love the rhythm. Josh is a world class artist. Solid all around. Trent was hot too as well as all the atmosphere was electric. I used to watch / stalk the Vandals when they played Live locally. Man, that's f'n hot.
❤🎉😂😊 I just discovered this video and I was really moved by it it reminded me of life's little paths we take good care lucky but eventually we will have to go down a really hard path and life is so precious 💕 I will say it like this josh freese watching him play along with this song reminded me of staying strong and keeping the rhythm and balance perfectly even when everything around you is against you 💕 bad ass song thank you for your music 🎵🎶
His drumming isn't the only thing mind-blowing, but he's got a discography that most drummers would kill to have.
He is literally one of the absolute best of our time. Incredible!!!
Sting
Tempo IS Amazing?
Session drummer life. Josh is a fucking beast.
He wrote chinese democracy is the one that says it all. Ive loved him since i was a youngster watching the vandals.
5,000 kids are going to learn to play drums because of this video. 10,000 parents are going to lose a lot of sleep. You're the man, Freese.
Cute comment thinking rock drummers come from stable homes lol
I learned drums from his playing on suicidal tendencies on the art of Rebellion suicidal tendences.
Bullshit. Listen I like Freeze but Foo Fighters have never been good since Wasting Light.
I’m pretty sure my parents accepted their insomnia. The day I moved out was their first night of actual sleep under their own roof. I just realized I’m a selfish person! Lol
Well, there are some deadbeat dads in the mix, so probably like 8000 parents....
Holy shit. That mix of groove, precision, and simplicity is hard to beat. No wonder this guy gets so many top gigs.
I love the drumming on this
this guy is Josh. The Josh Freese.
The One and Only Josh Freese.😊
POCKET
The Notorious One Man Orgy
Robin Finck happy walk at 1:32 LOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
I just cracked up at that too!
I love it! Good catch!
goddamn that's funny
So adorable lol
I'm happy you are my drummer, Josh
The wall of double kick at the end still gives me goosebumps every time i watch this.. Cant beat Tasteful double bass as opposed to overkill
Harry Harris its beautiful to hear in non Deathmetal tracks, every time
The first time I heard him add that at a live gig, I lost my mind. Only lasts a few seconds, but totally elevates an already incredible song.
7 years later and it's still incredibly true! That double kick is just *chef's kiss*
See Band-Maid. Akane is the master of controlled chaos.
Magnificent work. Freese plays exactly what needs to be played. No more, no less. That is a difficult state of mind most drummers can't get to, especially on a live gig.
Eric Gonzalez and that is EXACTLY what Ringo did for the Beatles. He may or may not have been one of the best drummers on the planet but he will always, always, always be remembered as one of the greatest...
exactly. perfect example would be Zach hill live drumming for team sleep. super talented dude but wayyyy too over the top and extra
Eric Gonzalez: that’s our job. Give the music what it needs, no more, no less.
wally walton ringo HAD to though. Big difference.
@@EverytimeIsleeptoken interesting comparison. I thought his drumming on the team sleep worked quite well in many places, either way it was at least a thoughtful choice and remember that at that time death grips was relatively unknown compared to recent years.
I love how his snare work matches the melody of what Trent is singing at 1:44. That was a cool little change up.
Dude is just one bad ass mofo
that is super tight
Savage. 1:42 I always come back for this one part. He plays along with Trent's vocal phrasing.
It's a wonderful detail.
fuking brilliant...as is fist. fuck!
i heard it too.
Also at 0:56 a magnificent "duet"
There are about 4 phrases where he improvs to Trent's vocals and leads Robin

+shane parry this song is not very difficult, if you take part of the drum.
Евгений Квач Its not a case of the song being difficult, Im saying I love how he plays it, but it is challenging with the strobe lights, sweat in his eyes, and remaining in synch with the backing tracks.

I don't even play an instrument and I find myself watching this video at least once a week...amazing
Michael Segovia you picked a good musician to watch.. Josh Freese is a master of his craft!!
Michael Segovia Not kidding. I been watching it for years. He is been drumming since he was 6 years old. He started drumming for Disney as a kid. I watched an interview with him a while back. Very humble guy too.
The humble guys are the best guys. Respect on tap.
Same here! Once a day lately or I feel a bit "off."
Michael Segovia lol
I keep coming back to this dope ass video
I also find his playing to be very visually satisfying. sometimes i rewatch the slip rehearsals just for him alone. the man.
This is my favorite live drumming video of all time. I've watched it hundreds of times over the years.
Any band would be lucky to have this beast on board ❤
Like foo fighters ?
SOOOOOOOO UNDERRATED ! His work with APC is incredible !
Anyone back here in 2024?
You mean people have left???
Never left 😊
Yeah boy
Hell yeah
😅😅😅💯💥
After seeing NIN live about a dozen times, as I watched this the thought that crossed my mind was he has the safest seat in the entire venue.
Still one of my favorite videos to watch. Congrats on the FF gig.
I've seen this like 800+ times now, it NEVER gets old.
This man doesn't get the recognition he deserves, absolute powerhouse behind the kit
I've probably watched this about 20 times. Reznor sounds pitch perfect too.
20 thousand times.
His voice sounds so seasoned and deeper now. Like it's kind if rad. :P
Reznor appreciates quality
I just found out he's going to be the new drummer for The Foo fighters today !! Josh and Dave !!!
Drum battle anyone ???
Wait! Really?! That,s confirmed?!
If so, that's awesome!!
@@Kin08006 ua-cam.com/video/kS37DLbd8YI/v-deo.html
Freese would win that I'd say
I just came back to see Josh on drums. This man's a monster on drums.
This insane bro!
He’s definitely one of the greatest. All hail Josh Freese! 🥁
Vrenna was better with NIN
what impresses me most about the true pros like this is the stamina it takes to sustain that level of precision and "pocket" for an entire 2hour + set
New drummer for Foo Fighters!!! Congrats
This dude was a legend at 21. Look at his discography. It s biblical.
i can watch this all day
+Mr. Self Destruct All day, every day…
I don't think I could count how many times I have watched this since he uploaded it. Doesn't matter because it always kicks ass! One of the true masters of drumming at work.
Imagine being one of the 97 clowns who gave this legend a thumbs down.
Bunch of morons
They must have the lowest self esteem or IQ
theyre waiting for that "drop"...
103 now, buncha dumb dumbs.
106 now 🤔🤘
Arguably one of the greatest drummers of all time. This video makes me happy in my pants.
i guess trent reznor finally found something real and true- josh freeze. : )
he's definetly on the short list and one of my personal favorites of all time. such versatility
very arguably indeed
Greatest of all time? I dunno about that.. Damn good? Yeah. All time? Ehhh...
He's good! but Danny Carey from tool is the master!
Oh My Goddess!! Can't wait to see you with Foo at Bonnnaroo 2023🖤🖤🖤🖤
Best fit for NIN. I miss this lineup and Josh in A Perfect Circle. Your drum fills are seamless
Agreed, I was sad when he left NIN and he wasn't in APC when I saw them, The red rocks show.
He's my fave!
APC’s current drummer is good but Josh just feels like he was a better fit for them.
Lets be real tho, where isn't Josh the best fit
Welcome to FF, cant wait to see you all playing live.
I played this at a gig when I was relatively new to drumming and didn't realize at the time that it's a straight-up country train beat, like on Folsom Prison Blues. Fits perfectly!
all the best with FF!!
I could watch the entire show from this perspective !!
Love Robin at 1:31 !!!
Thanks Josh, really!

Josh Freese, the human drum machine. That was badass.
Josh has an open handed way of approaching drumming that is very inspirational for this Phillips fan. Freese's work in Slip rehearsals was fun to watch. Mad respect.
I've watched this over and over for years. Amaze-balls!
i dont know why but after years and years i always comeback to this video¡¡!! all respecto to mr josh
same here....I always come back to get my fix
and again comeback to this!! jajaja give me tons of energy i dont know why akjkaja

Not every day a UA-cam video makes me want to give a standing ovation. Well done sir!
Every time I watch this, I have goosebumps.. What a drummer. Awesome Josh. Love you, no homo.
Josh Freese lives a life I can only dream off. He is what I aspire to be as a drummer his playing is phenomenal.
lol 1:33 fucking Robin Finck, I don't know if that was intentional, but he just had a huge smile on his face.
Nothin y
He's having so much fun, too. To me, that's the best part. He's incredible on the drums and in this song he gets to let it all out.
Welcome to the Foo Fighters Josh
I’ve watched this video. So. Many. Times. Masterpiece.
I have always loved josh's drumming on this song. its crazy clean and energetic. not to mention that sick double base ending starting at 3:50. Its never been played live this great sense!
Best band since 1992 for me...........thank U ......thanks .......
One of the best drummers ever in my opinion!
This is seriously intense, man... If I drummed like that for NiN for even one show, I'd die a happy man
Congratulations Josh Freese. 👏👏👏
I only recently learned about Mr freese here, within the last year or so. I'm not a musician or anything I just have an appreciation of music. And goodness gravy, this man right here is mine blowing every time!
My favorite NiN drummer!
Foo Fighters, here we come! Can’t wait to see him drumming with the Foo. Hope it happens and works out well.
that off beat he plays after the first part of each chorus is so good i thought it was a mistake at first. My brain was easily 3 seconds behind how bad ass that is.
for sure!
Yeah, it’s slightly different than the original recording, but way more interesting and fitting of the song. It also looks like slow-motion for a split second. It tripped up my brain a little bit too, good call man.
Who would downvote THIS?? One of the best NIN songs played with absolute fury by one of the best drummers of all time. Incredible.
Amazing, Josh. Congratulations!
This song is all about percussion and he nails it. Unreal. He just filled in I think to perform. Had to learn all these songs
@01:43 …”you know me…” is so badass

Holy crap that ending was phenomenal.
I love his drumming so much. First heard him with The Vandals and have been listening to his stuff ever since! He's so damned good
whoever's been doing the live audio mixes for nin the past 10 years seriously needs a round of applause
His name is “Pete.” He’s personally thanked by freese in the video description, oddly enough, lol.
I've seen NIN over a dozen times and this performance (and Gave Up) brought a whole new level to the live show. Amazing.
Brutal. Would like to see him do "song for the dead" too.
I am not a drummer, I know less than fuck all about drumming, yet here I am watching this for the 50th time
Hey what are you doing during the pandemic?
Watching one of my favorite drummers and bands!
I love the rhythm. Josh is a world class artist. Solid all around. Trent was hot too as well as all the atmosphere was electric. I used to watch / stalk the Vandals when they played Live locally. Man, that's f'n hot.
That double kick drum at 3:50 is like ecstacy for the ears!
Inc just got huge chills can’t wait to see him hammer it with the Foos
PURE MONSTERITY POWER
The complete intensity that he is playing is incredible.
Just watching this is good cardio! Thank YOU!
Thunderous Drumming
It seems like Josh Freese has played with like every good band ever and I'm totally okay with that lol
This live version sounds so glorious.
Drum-machines watch Josh Freese videos for inspiration. What a monster of precision and power.
That ending, man... absolutely incredible
nin will never find a better drummer
which is funny considering Trent did work with Dave Grohl on the latest EP, a year after this comment was made.
Mephiston David Grohl is good but he is no Josh Freese
i agree, Grohl is amazing, but Josh is another level
Illan Ruben gives this guy a run for his dough though. Both amazing drummers can't really say one is "better"... that's just stupid.
music is not about who is better.

Between 06 and 09 I saw them 38 times. Josh is a monster. Loved those days.
1:31 lol robin :D
you're a straight rose among a thorns, sir. my hat is off to you
He's a drum machine disguised in human skin!
Best NIN tour ever. Rocking like no other! So cool!
he is the master of a skipped beat that is expected is additional emphasis.
A drummer that is playing with the vocals - unbeatable. The best that I ever heard 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
fucking awesome!
Josh . . . Mr. Freese . . . we love you, man. thank you so much for _so much._
