@@toke7342 Yes, where he talks about everything but music. There's not really a lot of interviews, if any, where he gets to that stuff that Rick asks about. It could be very interesting.
Dear music media, please pay attention to how much great content that comes out because Rick lets the artists talk, doesn’t talk over them and stays away from long winded questions. There is a reason why these artists are gravitating to Rick and his channel.
Agree 100%. With the music media, controversy is the focus. Rick let Josh go as far as he wanted to with Taylor without prying, then they moved on.
I used to like the premier guitar rig rundown interviews I'm not sure if they still do those anymore. Great way to hear from the artist on the gear
Rick is also an extremely well-informed muscian. He lives and breathes this stuff, so his questions will reflect that. And he's a top-notch listener.
He is the best interviewer! some out there forget that we want to hear the guest ahhaha Jimmy Fallon i am talking to you
@@Fred-oh9vl You meant to type "with any media", right?
The fact that Josh answered the first question with, "It continues to be bittersweet" is all that anyone needs to know about him as a Human Being.
A Great Soul ❤🙏
seriously. he got the gig because he wasn't the guy nudging Grohl for the seat. aside from being qualified.
He’s such a nice Guy. Lovely Interview!!!
Let's briefly talk about how Rick edited in the audio of "Every Little Thing..." on top of Josh's playing. Josh NAILED the tempo of that well enough from memory that the actual song could be superimposed on top seamlessly.
Floored.
Noticed that too!, amazing!
Yep, so great!
I was looking for a comment on that! ❤
Oh, yeah, the "is he even human" moment :D
Another great example showing how the guys who get all the work and last in this business are the ones who are humble, personable, adaptable, and professional.
And reliable.
Just don't force this drummer to get the covid vax. Enough heart attacks and cancer already.
@@galvanizedgnomecringe
@@galvanizedgnomeI mean I get ya these is a risk and all that, but let's not assume every heart attach is the same. Hawkins clearly had many issues going on.
why does everyone think anti vaxxers are the cancer on society? You just showed why.
You know Dave Grohl would say yes in a heartbeat if you invited him for an interview, Rick. Make it happen! Also, still waiting on that eventual McCartney interview 🙏🏼
I agree. It's like the most anticipated interview Rick's ever going to do. The Foo Fighters. Rick has the best questions that other interviewers never ask. I always learn something new in his interviews because he talks about music from a theory master's view.
The Foo who I really want Rick to interview is Pat. He's had such a storied career and I think Rick could really get him to open up.
Dave's hot wings interview is one of the funniest ever
Yes to Dave Grohl, and the eventual Paul McCartney interview.
@@wewd that would be really cool! Would love to hear about his experiences with the germs and being there for those early days of punk
This has to be the best music channel on the internet. Right? I'm mean, so good.
Agree. Definitely the absolute best.
100%
This interview really just confirms what everybody else already knew. Josh was the perfect choice for the Foo Fighters in every way. He's an amazing musician, total pro, and a real down to earth guy, something the Foo Fighters really needed.
100% agree
HIRED GUN
@@richbdonaldson He's a full time member of the band, probably on a salary. I'm guessing he's compensated well considering he was a very busy session/touring drummer. What's your point?
He makes sense as a FF drummer but I still would prefer he is in APC.
Rick, I don't know that you've ever interviewed a more likeable musician. You can't help but cheer for this guy. He deserves the FF gig. He's humble and great. Hard to be both.
I loved the Bernard Purdie interview.
To be fair, he did already have an interview with Gregg Bissonette, who is another prolific session and touring player who has been doing it for even longer than Josh. I could listen to Gregg talk about drums, his career, and his life stories all day, too! I would say both of them are equally likeable. My very first exposure to Josh was when I went to see a NIN concert way back around 1999/2000 or so, and this then-unknown band (at least to my group of friends) opened for them called "A Perfect Circle". We were already blown away before NIN even took the stage. I can't remember how much tickets were for that show, but it would have been worth double to get the night we had. I fully understand why Trent hired this guy a few years later when NIN needed a touring drummer.
Agreed, Josh Freese has a very down-to-earth personality and I now see why he was a studio musician and now with the Foo Fighters. Great interview!
I agree. The polar opposite of a partying fool like his predecessor. Freese is a class act all around. It's refreshing.
@riversofeden3929 no need to disrespect the legend Taylor Hawkins. Sure he wasn't as classy but he brought a smile to anything anywhere.
Josh looks like a great guy, centred, real. He looks like a pro. Foo Fighters need a rock, a solid heavy-hitter. Josh Freese. Yeah. He's the man.
the vandals are amazing.
Calm down. This band is not exactly Sepultura. It's just standard radio friendly alternative rock.
@@adriantrusca1245seen them live? Much less polished than radio-friendly alt rock….in a great way
Him replacing Taylor just feels right. He fits the band like a glove both style wise and personality wise, plus he’s the best session drummer in the world
@@adriantrusca1245Useless comment 🤦🏻♀️
Rick does the best interviews of musicians ever. He listens, lets them talk, it's not about his personality, doesn't try to finish sentences for guests or overtalk them ever. Plus his questions are just always spot on. Perfect blend of emotional and technical insight. Just masterfully crafted.
Lets them talk. That's the key.
One of the smartest, laid-back, coolest, honest drummers ever!
Been a fan of Josh since the early days of A Perfect Circle. Love that he’s with the Foo Fighters now despite the circumstances that led to his position. RIP Taylor Hawkins.
Its a really really bitter sweet.
Taylor didn't "suicidal" himself, neither did he have TEN (10) different substances in his body after being sober for a while
check out the vandals fear of a punk planet, live fast diarrhea, sweating to the oldies.
Yeah the drumming on Thirteenth Step is my favourite drumming on any record
Sam’s man.
It's clear within the first 10 mins of this interview that Josh is a Foo Fighter. It just makes total sense. He's so respectful and in awe of what it all really means. What a solid dude.
There a two great things in this video: a drummer who has something to say and an interviewer letting him say it, uninterrupted. That's the kind of interview I am interested in. Thank you Rick!
My thoughts here!
🥂
Josh "Know what I mean" Freese. One of my favorite drummers ever. Definitely got me into drumming.
Josh’s grandfather, Hal Freese was the band/orchestra director at my high school for many years. Great man! Good memories!
How long ago was this?
@@jeetlahkar894 50ish years ago.
Love that part.
Rick: "because everyone has air-drummed that??"
Josh: "YES"
Ha! That's what makes a part 'a part.' If a non-drummer like me knows it by heart and air drums it every time, it's a part. I mean - can you imagine listening to Tom Sawyer without those post-guitar-solo drum bits? Me either, cuz it wouldn't be Tom Sawyer you're listening too...
@@vonhenry7087 total agreement bud.
It was the full, whole-hearted "YESSSS!!!!" that Josh responded to Rick's suggestion that made me smile so wide.
Like he was saying "THAT IS EXACTLY THE DEFINITION RICK YOU ARE A GENIUS" lmao.
So thoroughly enjoyed this interview.
@@macdahdi5175 That these guys are simpatico to that extent made this such a joy.
Incredible interviewer + incredible player = incredible interview. It’s Rick’s formula for success. Another gem. Well done!
What's so wonderful about this interview is that even someone who loves music but doesn't understand 80% of what Josh and Rick are talking about just gets pulled into it, almost transfixed on the mystery and magic of what the greats are able to do. We may not "get it," but we feel it when we hear it. This is one of my favorite of all your interview's, Rick.
Rick pumping out solid content lately I love it
For musicians, is there anything better right now? I don’t think so
Rick really is a pro. I’ll sit down and watch interviews with people I’m not even that interested in because I know he will ask great questions.
@@mefarriBut what’s impressive is that Rick’s content also appeals to non-musicians, who are music enthusiasts-it’s all so accessible.
I don't either. As Rick gains more and more traction, I think we're going to see a lot more legends like Josh come in for a visit.
Josh Freese is one of the most electrifying drummers I've ever heard. He was spectacular in NIN.
He’s certainly one of the most precise and on time drummers.
The lights in the sky tour with NIN with him on drums and all those crazy screens on stage was one of the craziest shows I've seen
He’s ok. 😊😏😉
He’d certainly bury the beater on “March of the Pigs.” If you haven’t seen that drum cam video look it up. The whole performance is mind blowing. Versatility on the snare on the highest level.
I can't believe I just sat down and watch an hour and a half of Josh talking, and it felt like 5 minutes, never knew who he was even though I have been listening to all those bands he's drummed in for years, my jaw hit the floor when he started rattling them off. Loved this interview
Big same! Unreal. I'm a huge fan of his and I didn't even know it! Lol
Rick is building up an amazing catalog of interviews that let us, the viewers and the fans, see the human side of all these great musicians but also, we get to learn the craft behind great songs, bands and professionnal path that leads to great career. Thank you so much sir!
The Matthew McConaughey of Drums.
Josh is a fantastic drummer, great interview, as always.
Haha was thinking this
I got an Owen Wilson vibe from him haha
Alright; alright; alright!
He looks a lot like Patrick Fabian (better call Saul)
yeah, was waiting for him to go "alright alright alright, do you have some drummies on you? would much cooler if you did.."
An hour and a half interview! Nobody else on the internet is bringing us this kind of quality insights from professional musicians. Nobody on cable ever could. Thank you Rick Beato!
Would've stayed for more!
This is legendary music content. Rick is the dude everyone wish they knew. Thank you Rick. Thank you
I just became a Josh Freese fan, great interview.
Josh's drums on Mer de Noms is among my all time favorites. Great talk!
Omg totally. So incredible. The most hooky drums you'll ever hear
@@chadhiggins9944What a great description! The drums on that record are incredible
His playing in 6 is a lesson for every drummer. I cannot play in 6 without those Freeseisms creeping in.
Did Josh play on song "The Hollow" on that album, or was it Tim Alexander before Josh stepped in ?
@@Pentoute45Wikipedia says Tim Alexander. I never knew that! The drums in that song are killer.
I was about to comment and then I hear him say “infectious grooves”! Man that brings me back. What I was going to say is how much I was always liked Freese. Then, he starts rattling off guys that took a liking to him when he was a kid, Vinnie, Jim Keltner, Jeff Porcoro, Chad Wackerman, etc.. and I’m just blown away who he got to watch and learn from. Then he ends up with one of the greatest bands in rock. Well done, Josh! Very well-deserved. What a tremendous drum life!!
That EFFING cut at 1:11:02 - genius... Also shows Josh' incredible pocket. Right in time with original track!
Josh clearly has all of the tea but never spills a drop. What a classy dude.
would love a list of those albums he's played on that no one realizes he has
You wanna blow your mind check out the video by the vandals “sweating to the oldies” it will show you his start and paint a great picture of how much ground his talent has covered!!! You’ll thank me haha (note the actual mini doc video produced by the band not the live album under the same title) it’s on here in a few places as part 1,2,3 ext with the dig!

I started getting really into the drums as a teenager in the early 00s, and I remember going through CDs in the house and seeing Josh Freese’s name on literally everything. Evanescence, Kelly Clarkson, Good Charlotte, Avril Lavigne, Seether, etc. Cool to hear him talk about that time. Great video!
This was simply a joy to watch. Thank you so much for putting this together.
Can't believe it's been 2 years already since Taylor's passing

@@ChickenJoe-tq6xd why they didn't have a defrib on hand is crazy...
Never forget Dave Grohl FORCED Taylor to get injected with the covid vaccine in order to tour or he would have been fired, Taylor could be ALIVE today but it was Dave's fault
Clot shot to blame
Dave Grohl FORCED Taylor to get the Clot Shot!
I first became aware of Josh when he played for Sting, which is a serious gig for every drummer. But when I learned he also played on "Bring me to life" from Evanescence it totally blew my mind. The drive of the song is truly unique and he put his signature on it.
Yeah, that album ‘Fallen’ by Evanescence is one of my all-time favorites. I used to think it was Rocky Gray who recorded that drums, but to my surprise, it was Josh. Josh recorded drums on that entire album. Not just Bring Me To Life!
That was my same reaction! I was listening to this during work in part because I'm a Foo Fighters fan and generally enjoying his stories, but then I hear he played with Evanescence? (Still one of my favorite bands tbh, haha! I listened to the hell out of Fallen back in the day. And still do, if I'm honest!)
You have to up your game on a technical level to roll with Sting, but the craziest stuff I've ever seen Josh play was when he was with Nine Inch Nails. This dude is a freak of nature being able to keep that pace for a 2+ hour show every night on a tour. If you go to Josh's UA-cam channel, he still has some old videos that he uploaded when he was on tour with NIN. Definitely go check those out if you haven't already.
Is he in the video??
That’s amazing!
I am so glad Dave and the band found a drummer after all Dave went through with Kurt and the Nirvana thing just goes to show you how much he loves music so much he could get through Taylor’s death and still move on shows his strength and his passion for music
That was a classic! You know it's a great one when you plan to just watch the first few mins for now, but can't stop watching until the end! Thank you Rick and thank you Josh. 😎
Josh is unequivocally one of the greatest rock drummers of all-time. He develops an innate sense of how a band wants to sound and he brings them to that place -- he just knows how to bring out the best in other players and makes every band sound great. He's also one of the nicest, most genuine people in the music industry, truly humble, and absolutely hilarious. It's been really great seeing the Foos embrace him as member in a band of characters, personalities, and cementing him as a household name in the rock world. He's been a hard-working drummer his whole life and deserves this gig so hard.
Judith is still my all-time fav Track. The drumming is epic!
I’m glad you made that comment!!!!
I was goin to
Me too!!!
One of the only albums, in which the first single is hands down the best track on the album. The whole album is great too
Absolutely!
Just saw them play it back to back in AZ, between Judith and The Outsider, he totally killed it
Thank you for sharing this intimate and emotional journey with us. I had been wondering how this happened, thank you for taking on this challenge Josh, I saw you in Sydney and Brisbane last year and you got a new fan! loved to see you there and we love you for it
This is seriously one of your best interviews ever. Could have gladly gone for another hour of this.
Josh has been a power rock drummer for 30 years. I don't think anyone else could have fit in with the Foo Fighters the way he did.
Obviously its not gonna happen now but I think Ilan rubin would've killed it too
@@TC-lk2evI think his play swings a little more than they do. he probably could have done the job but he’s more bluesy and artistic than they are in general
@@TC-lk2ev yes. I saw him with NIN. Great drummer.

@@BimBamZimZam I totally agree. While of course it would be great to have a Dave Grohl interview on the channel, Chris or Nate would both be excellent interviews and give a different perspective and insight into the band dynamics. Dave has always been the major spokesperson for the band so would be cool for the other guys to get the spotlight for a change!

Ricks job is to basically interview the best artists in the world. Talk about a dream come true.
So true!
He worked hard and has the talent for that, I would say it is well deserved
It's a dream come true for the artists to have someone with Ricks knowledge and skillset to interview them!
"The Noose" drum is my favorite Josh!
Still give me goosebump every single time!
It was Josh’s idea to “flick the switch” on that song. The dynamics leap out at the listener from that shift.
LOVE Josh's work with A Perfect Circle. One of the best drummers of all time and one of the best bands of all time
When I saw you guys post about this last week I couldn't wait to check it out. It did not disappoint! Thank you!
Never seen Josh interviewed. He’s always just been a name associated with a lot of my favorite bands like NIN and APC. I remember being mesmerized by the drumming on APC’s 13TH STEP and not even knowing his name when it came out. I knew that drummer was insanely special. I also wondered what it must be like to be MJK’s drummer when his other drummer is Danny Carey. But Josh was already a bit of a superstar by then, I guess, so it must’ve been no big deal. Plus Danny’s such a sweet guy. Rick, you’re absolutely killing it. Your Danny interview a few weeks ago was one of the best musician interviews I’ve ever heard. Super impressive guest list. This interview is fantastic and I’m so glad to know who Josh is. Would love to see a drum-off between Dave and Josh.
I met Josh when our band Arcade used to play at Disneyland. I was the bass player and Josh was really great way back then. Joshs' father hired me to work in that band.
Another epic interview for the history books! Rick’s interviews always result heartfelt, open and honest conversations that we can’t hear anywhere else. Keep it up!
Rick, you always do the interviews that I didn't know I wanted to watch. This was so fascinating, and I honestly wasn't super aware of who Josh Freese was until this. I'm so grateful to be alive and interested at the same point in human history as you're doing this. What an amazing thing.
I am a die hard Foo Fighters fan. Taylor’s loss devastated me. I was lucky enough to attend the Taylor tribute concert in LA. The moment Josh played with them I knew he was the new drummer. I have seen the foos twice since and Josh is amazing, he is a foo. To see all of them onstage, doing what they love, it’s a great experience. ❤

I was 15 years old when I saw A Perfect Circle at the Mercer Arena in Seattle. It was an incredible show but later I saw Josh walking to the bus, and I yelled “you’re the reason I play the drums!” He stopped and bowed and blew kisses and said “thank you much man!” It made my millennium. That first A Perfect Circle record really was a showcase for everyone individually and then collectively their sound was so tight and so original. Wonderful times.

This isn't an interview ....it's just a great conversation. A brilliant insight into Josh Freese's personality and why he gets all the work he does.
And that's what makes it so entertaining.

So nice to hear someone at this level just talk, and talk. So many great stories and Josh got to spend time around so many greats it’s no surprise that he would also become a true great.
Rick, I had never really watched any of your videos before, but thank you so much for this interview! You gave Josh his space and time to speak. I absolutely loved that. Subscribed and looking forward to more. You knocked it out of the park!
I was at the Devo concert in Oakland in 2014 that ended up being the movie "Hardcore Devo: Live". I was wearing a Frank Zappa Lumpy Gravy shirt. I met Josh during the VIP meet and he saw my shirt, telling me he used to play for his Son, Dweezil. I felt honored that he took the time to mention that. Great Drummer, and all around a decent dude.
Also, if you ever see the concert movie I mentioned, there is a scene during the song "Uncontrollable Urge" where a guy jumps on stage and then dives into the audience. I'm the guy he landed right into. I have my own footage of that I'll upload sometime.

It's cool to watch this channel grow through the years. Rick always asks the best questions
I saw this on Josh’s IG and I already knew this interview is gonna be one of the best!
I watched Josh throw his spare sticks at Jeordie Osborne White on stage with APC in 2005. He was playing the song one handed to free up his other hand to mess with the bass player. My favorite memory from that show
Those thirteenth step tours had moments that changed my life man!!! Was great time to see them!!!
