how beato overlooked this song defies comprehension. copeland's fills throughout the whole song are great, but that final minute is wonderful. the almost banal chorusing of "sending out an sos" while copeland and summers colour it in day-glo is sublime.

My mate Dave did the best drum fill EVER when he fell down a flight of stairs carrying his snare drum and sticks. He’d just finished off a bottle of brandy and was getting ready to load up the boogie bus for a gig. The sound was phenomenal! The rest of the band congratulated him on such an astounding performance and asked for an encore (we were gonna film it) For some unknown reason he shouted at us to ‘just fu.k off!’ Still managed to play a great gig AND pull a fit bird afterwards! ROCK N ROLL FOREVER!

Thank you for making "Phil Collins In The Air Tonight the greatest drum fill of all time", in the eighties fellow drummers scorned Phil for his drumming, but as I am sure you are aware he worked continuously playing drums for a hell of of a lot of artists not just for Genesis! He has to have been one of the most talented drummers there has ever been. By the way I know how long it takes to make a video I have tried. Thank you.

    • George Clarke
      George Clarke 22 дні тому

Yeah nobody scorned his drumming in the 80’s, especially other artists. There was of course a backlash after the height of his popularity as a songwriter and omnipresent figure. But his drumming was never in question.

    • vennootje

It's a great fill, definitely, but I would never go so far as calling it the greatest. The immense gate sound effect makes it sound massive, for one. You take that away, it would sound a lot less impressive. But then again, it's all a matter of opinion.

    • nowoTone Productions
      nowoTone Productions 2 місяці тому

I don’t think fellow drummers scorned him, it was more the general public. A lot of drummers who know about his abilities always pointed that out.

Rick, I have to admit, i have never seen one of your videos before, but as a lifelong drummer (40+ yrs), the title caught my eye. Loved it! Not because of the fills that you chose, but because you and your fellow musicians played all of the music (not counting Vinny!). It was refreshing and impressive. Great job! @Randy Best I guess we can agree to disagree, but I certainly respect your point of view. There are thousands of excellent drum fills that have been recorded by outstanding artists. This list is subjective by definition and "just for fun." I don't necessarily agree with all of THEIR rankings of the "top 20 drum fills." I can look up/listen to fills that I think are some of the best all on my own. To me, what makes this interesting is that they played the fills/music. Cheers!

    • Randy Best
Randy Best 2 місяці тому +1

That’s interesting because that’s the very reason why I didn’t enjoy this video. I think it’s silly that they are playing along with the songs. I’d rather just hear the song itself and part without other people singing or playing along, especially when it’s a top 20 drum fill list. I don’t want a guy playing guitar or bass along.

@David Seres Neil Pearts best work was on hemispheres. Try listening to a song called la villa straigata, can't ever spell it right lol. Every drummer I know says that is the hardest song to play. Mike portnoy said if you can play that song you can play anything. Vinny Paul said it took everything he had to play the song.
I agree much of Pearts mainstream music is pretty simplistic as you say. You really have to dig into their collection. I'm not a huge rush fan by any means but I respect any drummer that every single drummer says inspired them.
Also you spoke about him being tight! He was very aware of that and went to drumming school to loosen up. How many drummers you know that after they make it big are humble enough to admit their not perfect and are willing to let another drummer teach them?
Neil wouldn't even consider himself the best drummer either. He would probably say buddy rich but as all great musicians say every drummer or musician has their own aspects that make them great. Its more of what the fan likes or appreciates in that artists

Neil's fill at the end of Red Barchetta (during and right after the last lyric of the song) is superior, imo, to the Tom Sawyer fill/solo. Of course, you could make a whole list for just Neil, or Bonham, or a number of these drummers (not the biggest Moon fan but he was "Mr. Drum Fill").

    • Martin Cade
      Martin Cade 2 місяці тому

I'll add a personal favorite from Bonham - the way he played fills in live versions of Whole Lotta Love that seemed to recklessly go too long, over the bar lines and past when you think the fill would end, then he brings it back in time along with the rest of the band.
And I agree, I could come up with a top 10 list just for Neil Peart or John Bonham drum fills.

In the Air Tonight is certainly one of the most well-known and relevant, and i love air drumming along to it, but man that Rush fill takes my top spot. I'm also surprised that there wasn't more Keith Moon. If you think his fills are crazy in the recorded stuff, check out some footage of live concerts. The dude never sits in the pocket. He's like an octopus.

Serious question: how about putting up a Rick Beato's band and do some jams and/or release some tracks every once in a while. You have an incredible line-up over there. Nothing fancy, just half an hour every quarter or so on a live stream. I think it would be cool.

Great idea, but the copyright/royalty issues would be a nightmare. Think of the number of blocked videos Rick has to deal with now., the "blockerbots" would go into overload. If it could be a possibility, and Rick having nearly 1.75m subscribers, I'm sure that there might be a UA-cam meltdown in the making. That said, how about making it like a PPV benefit? Who would possibly block that?

Kenny Aronoff's fill in John Mellencamp's song Jack and Diane is as iconic as a lot of these. The pre-solo “ Whole Lotta love” drum fill is above the other Led Zeppelin examples… John Bonham uses the same drum fill at the end of the instrumental section of “All of my love” several years later.
_Wappata wappata wappata wappata Wap - bum bum bum bum bum…_ a triplet feel played over a 4/4 key sig. it’s jazzy and funky and ‘late’ and thus defines the drummer without a single note from his signature kick.
