    In the 80's, I babysat for a few seriously sketchy people. Looking back I realize how dangerous babysitting could be. People trust less now so I think babysitters are safer then in decades past. Parents would be more hesitant to let their kids babysit for strangers whereas mine were like "see you whenever".

    So one phone call conversation allows a child to go out of town and babysit someone no one has ever seen or met. I’m glad the majority of people have realized this isn’t a good idea anymore. Who cares about the time period that makes no sense to do...smh I hope Margaret’s family found some kind of relief after what happened.

      Stephanie Logan none of those historical events correlate with what I said. Idk would you send your kids out our town to a house you’ve never been to or met the parents? No you wouldn’t.That’s what I was talking about. Someone murdered a child because of a failure on the parents part, Pearl Harbor etc has nothing to do with that, yes it was a disruption to our innocence as a nation but not in the way I meant.

    So sad. All of these so sad. When I was a teenage (I shan't say how long ago that was.) it was a simpler and more trusting time; even though though, as these cases show, there were monsters. I was only allowed to babysit for families known to my parents, or friends of those families who vouched for them. But nothing can protect one from home invaders or a false friend with a gun, or being helpless from an unexpected attack. Even more seems to go on now because our society practically guarantees mobility and anonymity.

      LodiTX Well said, I agree 100%.
      Did these things exist in the 40s and 50s in the United States? Yes, but occurrences were much fewer and further between. This country’s culture changed immensely during the 1960s “free love”, feminism and the women’s empowerment movement, degradation of the traditional family structure, the rise in popularity of the hippie movement, and after the Vietnam War. Selfishness and hedonism has been on the rise ever since, and I believe that there is a connection to these things. That is my observation only.

      I think it was easy in the early fifties to not expect people to watch you. He was a professor at the University, so anyone would expect him to go to the game. And a baby sitter to be there. This was over sixty years ago, and at that time, there were very few murders or violent crimes. They have never found a body, and my parents always said she was probably buried under the highway that runs through town. It was being worked on and cement laid at this time, so it would have been easy to place here body there. But no one knows.

    • @taracate88
      @taracate88 5 років тому +2

      theblackkittie13 I didn’t think of that! Whatever the reason, I’m suspicious of it. I just remember babysitting when I was a kid and I always knew more about the family than I wanted, and usually (I grew up in a small town) I knew something about them that the community would have thought was interesting. I’m not the kind of person to spread others business but I remember telling my mom about a few people and not thinking too much about it, other than it was strange, and she would stop me from going back. My grandma was a detective for children involved in sexual abuse so I think my mom was just saving me from something I didn’t understand yet. I have asked her about it and she doesn’t remember what her specific reason was because it happened to a couple people I worked for, but I will say this, the women in my family (except me!) have a crazy intuition about people and I don’t ever disobey now as an adult. I cant say anything that happened back then because I don’t really remember but those witches have proven to me that they have a sixth sense about that kind of thing so I’m fully confident my mom saved me from horrendous experiences by not allowing me to work for those people. Or maybe she stopped something like this, who knows. But people are creepy more than us normal people ever wanna know. So I would bet that first babysitter knew something.

    Evelyn sounds like a possible sexual assault, or burglary gone wrong. Seeing as how 2 men seem to be responsible for it. I believe (though, I'm not positive, that other houses had been attempted to be broken in that night too) It could also have been a stalker or enemy of the other sitter and Evelyn was attacked instead. One theory is that it was Ed Gein, since he lived near Lacrosse at the time. I don't know about that, as his victims were typically older women. However, some of the bodies he had desecrated in his home, were of teen girls so it could have been him...

    • @timothyreed2579
      @timothyreed2579 4 роки тому +1

      Plainfield is quite a ways from Lacrosse & the claim that Gein was visiting relatives in town that night are false. It wss written in the book about Gein that was wrote by the judge. He made many false claims in it. Ed never had anything to do with his relatives after they moved from Lacrosse when he was still a young kid. His mother never allowed him & his brother to leave the house except for school. Not to mention it doesn't fit his MO at all. Ed never broke into anyone's house & Forcefully took them. There is really nothing that connects him to this at all other than he was a psycho & people just want to pin anything on him.

    Wow. The last case of the professor that asked his friend for their daughter, Evelyn, to babysit just that night because their usual one wanted to go to the local game also...must be racked with guilt, even tho he didn't know anyone would break into his home. That awful thing happened in his house and wouldn't have happened to the girl if he hadn't asked her to babysit, plus it's a young daughter of a friend of his brutally murdered. When my kids were small, the few times we had a babysitter, either it would be the babysitter herself who would be the problem or who they let in the door when I wasn't there (one adult babysitter let another adult she didn't know in the door who attacked my baby daughter...just slapped her, but still...). After the last "slap" incident, I lied to everyone and became "too busy" to go to even the few club meetings I was involved in and just stayed home lonely, unless I could take my kids with me. Just not worth it.

Those first 24hrs are vital to finding a person endangered missing. ☹️😡😠 Horrific thing to happen to all of these girls. Babysitting has never been safe if you don't know who you're going to be looking after and where. Then again it can happen at a friend's place aswell. Olives case wasnt very highly publicised in New Zealand but in Rotorua its still a sad/horrific unsolved rape and murder. 😥🙁😥
    Evelyn's case has always bothered me and kept me awake. It's so horrific and unexpected. It's strange too. The Rasmussen family may have been the targets but the baby was fine though. There's a theory the Rasmussens had planned a robbery for insurance as they had instructed Evelyn to cover the baby with her blanket at 7:10pm. Was this a sign for the burglars???? Janice wasn't harmed so it's a theory to beleive I guess. Evelyn faught back and was knocked out by one of the two men seen with a girl in the Buick later.

    Poor girls, and poor families. That Margaret case was perhaps the creepiest as it was apparently a predator's scheme, and who knows how many times, in what variations, it may have been repeated. I hope the beast is burning in hell.
    What gives me a pause, though, is what happened to Evelyn. This is not just a girl at a wrong time and place, this seems targeted at her specifically. Can't really imagine what a diligent student of fifteen might have gotten herself into, unless she became a chance witness to something, which makes me wonder if this wasn't some kind of sick revenge e.g. at her father. If so, this is yet another level above mere "normal" evil.

    For Evelyn, have they used DNA recently on the inside of the sneaker ?

    • @winterbeaches

      If it's still in evidence. Chances of a sneaker stored under typical 1950's conditions being viable today are slim. Totally worth trying.

      The DNA in the sneakers should still be good. Scientists can often pull full DNA profiles decades later from objects kept in evidence. My feeling here is that the cops are covering for one of their own or a member of the cop's family. After all, their lousy CODIS system is so faulty it should be either disregarded altogether or used only after a modern DNA match is obtained. I'll bet they threw away all of the evidence.

    I think if I'd been the father of this first missing girl I would've driven her to this man's house first, to check the house and the supposed client, before I let her just go off on the bus by herself. This would be particularly true since he lived pretty far away and they didn't know him.

    I know things were safer back then but im still shocked that one of the parents didnt drive Margaret to that strangers house that first day. To meet him in person, enter the house, make sure Margaret feels comfortable. Even just to make sure their daughter and the child she was baby sitting would be safe on their own if something went wrong(that there are neighbours, a phone, bus, etc close by).

    SMH at Bob in Olive's case. Clearly there was some police involvement, whether the cop did it or knows who did it. Firing a detective and essentially blackballing him for not wanting to pin a murder on an innocent man is a major red flag!
