I recall the Penny Serra murder. My father and my aunt worked in New Haven and I always did my shopping there. Penny was close to my age and her murder frightened me. I wish her father had lived to see her killer caught and convicted.
Yeah, he just found the gun. He was just wanted to show him the gun. He just got a sudden urge to rob the store. The gun accidentally went off when the victim swatted it . If it had went off as he said it did (which is HIGHLY unlikely), by swatting it, it would have pushed the gun away from the victim. Surely, he can do better than that, please.
Pointed it at his head to “show” it to him. Lesson here is get away with it long enough and you don’t have to worry about it. He was so sorry he moved to New Orleans shortly after the murder.

Many, many years ago my 1st wife was killed in our home . It seemed that I was the only suspect and for two years the police hassled me aswell as family disowning me . I had to move far away and start over . Finally I was visited by the police to inform me that my wife’s killer was in thier custody. This news did nothing to help me in my ongoing grief and I wanted nothing to do with the trial, I didn’t care what happened to the person that took my Angel away from everyone that loved her (destroying my life was inconsequential to losing the love of my life), However another two years past by and the accused wrote to me from prison informing me of what transpired on that fateful day. This single act gave me what I needed to finally move forwards and leave my deep depression behind . I won’t tell anyone what he wrote me as it is deeply personal but I believed every word he said cos it fit in with my wife’s caring nature, the things he said she done and said to him, was just my wife to a ‘T’ . My view about sentencing offenders is that more emphasis should be on what the family need rather than how many years the offender serves . This may sound controversial but after many letter exchanges I now understand the position my wife’s killer was in and the insane pressure he was under, (I don’t agree with the way he tried to solve his problems) , and as time is a great healer I will say this , I don’t feel sorrow towards him, my sorrow is for the loss of my wife, but I do however feel lucky that with everything I’ve been through with the police accusations and family disowning me, and even my deep depression ,that I never have felt the kind of pressure that my wife’s killer was under, I don’t think that anyone can say for sure how they too would act if that amount of pressure was put on to themselves , luckily like I ive said most of us will never have to find out . And to prove a point about people and thier behaviour know this , not one Policeman that accused me of my wife’s murder ever apologised , NOR did any family member or friends ever reach out to me to say they were sorry . These same people did ‘slate me’ for conversing with my wife’s killer. This says a lot about human nature, who is worse the killer that seeks forgiveness, or those family and friends who think they have done me no wrong ? (It was these people that sent me into my spiralling depression , the same depression that my wife’s killer brought me out of ) Those family and friends are no longer part of my life and my second wife’s family adopted me into thier lives as one of thier own and after my tradegy all I can say is that I’m lucky to have found not just another woman to love but also for the past 22years I’ve had the love of her whole family . I can’t say for sure the person who I would’ve turned out to be without my tragedy, but I will say this, I look in the mirror and think to myself that I am the luckiest person in the world, cos what I haven’t mentioned yet (because I didn’t want you the reader to be biased) my depression lead me down a path of drink and drugs, the only thing I knew for sure in them days was that I would at some point die from an overdose . My life changed the day I received that prison letter , so yes me may think that we are the masters of our own fate, but it’s funny how chance seems to influence that fate . RIP my Angel x
I'm so sorry for both your loss and the horrible treatment you received afterwards. One of my former students was a mere 17 years old and was accused of murdering her boss at the clothing store where she worked. The detectives of the St. Louis major case squad were horrific to her and other employees, even though it was clear that the victim had been raped by a male and that it later developed it was a former employee who'd been fired. There was no apology to anyone, and she suffered disrupted sleep and anxiety for months afterwards.
It’s very unsettling how the police will often try to make someone fit a crime so they can close a case rather than keep an open mind and try to find the real suspect. Sometimes they get “tunnel vision” and refuse to look at glaringly obvious facts that point elsewhere, and when proven wrong not only can you forget any apology you are damn lucky if they don’t try to convict you anyway. Just watch any episode of Death Row Stories.

Too easy. Stiffer penalties r needed even the death penalty for repeat offenders. Nothing to thwart physcos from murdering innocent people any more. Drug offenders get more time than killers it seems. Detectives work hard to solve cases and the justice system slaps the wrist and sends them on their way. Crazy. Everyone needs to carry a firearm for protection these days. Especially today with all the riots going on.
Remember he was 17 years old when he killed the shop keeper. It’s also plausible that the gun “accidentally went off”. If it was premeditated he would of had time to steal money and take the items he left behind.

I've interviewed murder suspects whose crime was captured on tape or witnessed by several witnesses who also claimed to be innocent. IMHO, it's an old song.

Pennys dads loyalty to his daughter made me cry so hard 😭 it was still his mission on his literal death bed. I Pray he was reuited with her and found peace with her by his side again. I also feel so bad for rosemary she lost both mother figures in her life, her mom & older sister. And her father was changed forever. So tragic for everyone involved
I like the way the information is formatted and presented; she lays out the story and information that remained stagnant for decades. And then, the breakthrough finding that closes the case. It keeps you guessing and helps the viewers to empathize with the agony of the case being cold for so long.
it broke my heart hearing that penny's fathers last request on his death bed was for them to not give up on his daughter. in the lovely bones, there's a quote that goes, "There was one thing my murderer didn't understand; he didn't understand how much a father could love his child." It definitely is true. i hate that he never got to see her killer brought to justice, but i know he's with his daughter now

I remember seeing Penny Serra’s picture on the news for years. So glad it was finally solved. I find it very interesting that cold cases are very often solved after surviving family members pass away. I do believe they help from the other side. Sending prayers to her family and friends for their loss.
The 2nd case just enrages me. He gets away with murder for 40 years, finally looks at facing justice and gets away with it AGAIN because the witness dies. He does less than a year, and gets to go back to a good life. Grrr.

If you were accused of something that you did not do but a witness claims you did (happens a LOT) how would you feel if I was determined to prosecute you? Then that witness dies, but i go ahead and prosecute you anyway. Hell, it's been 40 years since the crime & you've gotten to live pretty well! Do you think this doesn't happen? Witnesses make mistakes, they lie, their memory fades or evolves over the years. The WEAKEST cases are built on (eye witness) testimony. And jailhouse informants? 9/10 times their testimony is self-serving. Take a look at the people who ended up on Death Row & were later exonerated bc they were lucky enough to be cleared by DNA evidence. Further: Let's say that we KNOW you did it but the only witness dies. As a prosecutor, I say we go ahead anyway. The jury finds there's not enough to convict you and votes to acquit you. Double jeopardy means I can't try you again EVEN IF DNA is later matched to you & there’s no doubt that you did the crime. You want to live where there's no crime? North Korea has ZERO violent crime & there aren't any annoying defense attorneys, “librul” judges or that pesky "librul" thing called the Bill of Rights. I might even donate a few bucks to the "Relocate to NK bc we're tired of libruls" fund. Finally, and this is what non-lawyers do not get, offenders are sentenced under the laws as they EXISTED WHEN THE CRIME WAS COMMITTED. (Google ex post facto law.) I once had someone tell me that even if someone's DNA is at a crime scene, and it is only theirs and the victims. It could still be set up, therefore that person should not be held accountable. Because forensics are still wait for it 'too far behind to convict someone of a crime'. I said true it could be, however that would require a lot of planning or coercion to make that happen. However if someone has committed a crime with intent, then they should get the death penalty. They disagreed and said the death penalty should not be brought back ever. So if someone kills another person and they mean to do it. They should only get what a judge hands down as an 'agreeable sentence' for the crime being committed. So a persons life is only worth whatever shitty and useless sentence that some soft touch judge has decided is 'justice'. Especially if that judge has never been a victim of a crime. Sounds fair doesn't it? I also added that In spite of the fact that if someone kills with intention. And is a natural born killer. That person should be killed, not rehabbed. As some people say that no one person is born evil, now if anyone believes that they're delusional. And have clearly never heard of psychopaths, people who lack empathy. And have more capacity for evil than anyone else on this planet. I may be wrong, and I accept anyone out there proving it to me. Its crazy I have been to New Orleans many many times and have seen and gave that street performer money. It's like he's a human statue a mannequin just rozen in time while walking the dog it's actually really cool.. but that shows you just never know about people. Wow....
There should be a system that automatically compares all unknown fingerprints from felony cases against known prints at a specified interval, say monthly or even weekly. If a hit was made, the system would automatically notify the submitting agency for follow up. A similar set up for DNA could be built, not just for direct matches, but familial matches as well.

I was raped as a young girl by two unknown boys and it was very brutal. It happened in a public park and it was the summer between my second and third grade. I'm glad to see genetics and science solving these cases now. Because I am sure those young man went on to do more two other young girls. It does my heart good to see these soft cases

One thing I learn from watching lots of true crime videos like this: DON'T lead a messy life full of domestic abuse, violence, drunkenness and drugs. If you do, YOU'RE the person the police will turn to when there's an unsolved murder that needs a suspect.....

Do I understand Miller was only 17 and that he may have killed by accident? yes, I do. But the fact that he denied ever being in the store but then telling the victim's family how much he used to go there just rubbed me the wrong way. I recall that there had been additional details on the first case--that at one point they had checked hospital records for people who were there that day and that the killer had been--he had severe headaches because of his head injury.

My son has done at least 5 times that amount over the years for being an addict. Possession charges and other misdemeanors. I would be livid. They had her written testimony. I understand she could not be cross examined but his fingerprints should have been uploaded A LOT sooner than they were if he had multiple arrests for little things. That is not justice. I don't really care if Freddie repents and laments. Also I don't think the gun went off accidentally and even if it did, he is guilty either way owing to the fact that he had evil intention already. Dude got off very easy.

Too easy. Stiffer penalties r needed even the death penalty for repeat offenders. Nothing to thwart physcos from murdering innocent people any more. Drug offenders get more time than killers it seems. Detectives work hard to solve cases and the justice system slaps the wrist and sends them on their way. Crazy. Everyone needs to carry a firearm for protection these days. Especially today with all the riots going on.
Remember he was 17 years old when he killed the shop keeper. It’s also plausible that the gun “accidentally went off”. If it was premeditated he would of had time to steal money and take the items he left behind.

I've interviewed murder suspects whose crime was captured on tape or witnessed by several witnesses who also claimed to be innocent. IMHO, it's an old song.

I also feel so bad for rosemary she lost both mother figures in her life, her mom & older sister. And her father was changed forever. So tragic for everyone involved
I like the way the information is formatted and presented; she lays out the story and information that remained stagnant for decades. And then, the breakthrough finding that closes the case. It keeps you guessing and helps the viewers to empathize with the agony of the case being cold for so long.

it broke my heart hearing that penny's fathers last request on his death bed was for them to not give up on his daughter. in the lovely bones, there's a quote that goes, "There was one thing my murderer didn't understand; he didn't understand how much a father could love his child." I remember seeing Penny Serra’s picture on the news for years. So glad it was finally solved. I find it very interesting that cold cases are very often solved after surviving family members pass away. I do believe they help from the other side. Sending prayers to her family and friends for their loss.
Love these cases when the murderers are caught. With DNA, those who think they got away with it better think again and sweat the rest of their lives.
Love to read about crime solved. Maybe one day JonBenet Ramsey's case will appear.
The 2nd case just enrages me. He gets away with murder for 40 years, finally looks at facing justice and gets away with it AGAIN because the witness dies. He does less than a year, and gets to go back to a good life. Grrr.

If you were accused of something that you did not do but a witness claims you did (happens a LOT) how would you feel if I was determined to prosecute you?
Then that witness dies, but i go ahead and prosecute you anyway. Hell, it's been 40 years since the crime & you've gotten to live pretty well! Do you think this doesn't happen? Witnesses make mistakes, they lie, their memory fades or evolves over the years. The WEAKEST cases are built on (eye witness) testimony. And jailhouse informants? 9/10 times their testimony is self-serving.
Take a look at the people who ended up on Death Row & were later exonerated bc they were lucky enough to be cleared by DNA evidence.
Further: Let's say that we KNOW you did it but the only witness dies. As a prosecutor, I say we go ahead anyway. The jury finds there's not enough to convict you and votes to acquit you. Double jeopardy means I can't try you again EVEN IF DNA is later matched to you & there’s no doubt that you did the crime.
You want to live where there's no crime? North Korea has ZERO violent crime & there aren't any annoying defense attorneys, “librul” judges or that pesky "librul" thing called the Bill of Rights. I might even donate a few bucks to the "Relocate to NK bc we're tired of libruls" fund.
Finally, and this is what non-lawyers do not get, offenders are sentenced under the laws as they EXISTED WHEN THE CRIME WAS COMMITTED. (Google ex post facto law.) Laws have been changed and now the US incarcerates more people than any other country in the world. That’s not limited to violent crime. If you ever wonder why we never have money to do anything positive - that’s a big reason. The US cuts spending for education, elder care, social services to put into building more prisons. Guess why the average American couldn’t pass a middle school science quiz.

defense attorneys: That DNA's been sitting around an evidence room for years! Any random guy from anywhere's DNA could've floated in there!

Or that the DNA has changed _so much_ over the years that it probably could've matched anyone it was tested against.
I once had someone tell me that even if someone's DNA is at a crime scene, and it is only theirs and the victims. It could still be set up, therefore that person should not be held accountable. Because forensics are still wait for it 'too far behind to convict someone of a crime'. I said true it could be, however that would require a lot of planning or coercion to make that happen.
However if someone has committed a crime with intent, then they should get the death penalty. They disagreed and said the death penalty should not be brought back ever. So if someone kills another person and they mean to do it. They should only get what a judge hands down as an 'agreeable sentence' for the crime being committed. So a persons life is only worth whatever shitty and useless sentence that some soft touch judge has decided is 'justice'. Especially if that judge has never been a victim of a crime. Sounds fair doesn't it?
I also added that In spite of the fact that if someone kills with intention. And is a natural born killer. That person should be killed, not rehabbed. As some people say that no one person is born evil, now if anyone believes that they're delusional. And have clearly never heard of psychopaths, people who lack empathy. And have more capacity for evil than anyone else on this planet. I may be wrong, and I accept anyone out there proving it to me.
But to conclude this, I was told that based on my views of how to deal with killers that I 'wasn't on this planet'. I personally don't believe that rehab can work, it only works if the person in rehab wants it to work. I do believe in the philosophy of life for a life. If anyone disagrees with me. Good luck rationalising all these murdered people on here not getting justice. Sorry for the long comment. I wasn't angry with you. Your comment just made me think of that.
Penny Is A woman that I admire , She fought him off and did not Scream helplessly, and the dad used the Money to search for his daughter's Killer,Much respect for that man.!! God bless

When Dr. Lee is assigned to a case, he gets the job done quickly, and he gets it done right! Dr. Lee is the smartest man I know in the forensic world. He never misses. I have the ultimate respect for Dr. Lee.
Until the OK Simpson trial where he lost a lot of credibility, his "something wrong" is still used today to ridicule something. Not good!

Its crazy I have been to New Orleans many many times and have seen and gave that street performer money. It's like he's a human statue a mannequin just rozen in time while walking the dog it's actually really cool.. but that shows you just never know about people. Wow....
There should be a system that automatically compares all unknown fingerprints from felony cases against known prints at a specified interval, say monthly or even weekly. If a hit was made, the system would automatically notify the submitting agency for follow up.
A similar set up for DNA could be built, not just for direct matches, but familial matches as well.

I was raped as a young girl by two unknown boys and it was very brutal. It happened in a public park and it was the summer between my second and third grade. I'm glad to see genetics and science solving these cases now. Because I am sure those young man went on to do more two other young girls. It does my heart good to see these soft cases

One thing I learn from watching lots of true crime videos like this: DON'T lead a messy life full of domestic abuse, violence, drunkenness and drugs. If you do, YOU'RE the person the police will turn to when there's an unsolved murder that needs a suspect.....
Grant owned an auto shop & so did Penny's father. Grant had seen that car BEFORE. The attempted theft of Penny's dad's car was INTENDED with forethought, not a random event that just presented itself.
i hope all the unsolved cases from the past few years can one day be in a video like this

He spoke of what a good guy the murdered man was. Then he said he felt like robbing the place, holding a gun to the victim. That is pure evil.

I agree. Drug offenders get more time than these murderers. The death penalty should still be considered for murder cases. Maybe a stiffer penalty would thwart some of these senseless killings.

But the fact that he denied ever being in the store but then telling the victim's family how much he used to go there just rubbed me the wrong way. If he was as innocent as he claimed, he wouldn't tell this bullshit story when arrested. This just goes to show that he is not to be trusted. Props to the victim's son, following him with that sign.

Penny's father was amazing. Very sad that he wasn't alive when the murderer was caught.
Its astonishing how little some people think about taking a human life. Sociopaths who kill just because they can, just because they felt like doing it. And they leave heartbreak for so many.
I recall that there had been additional details on the first case--that at one point they had checked hospital records for people who were there that day and that the killer had been--he had severe headaches because of his head injury.

While I’m glad the Farah family has the answers, it’s bull shit that he committed a murder, took a man from his wife and four kids, and spent 344 days in jail. Wtf? My son has done at least 5 times that amount over the years for being an addict. Possession charges and other misdemeanors. I would be livid. They had her written testimony. I understand she could not be cross examined but his fingerprints should have been uploaded A LOT sooner than they were if he had multiple arrests for little things. That is not justice.
