- in 1934, elliott speer was a youthful and exuberant husband, father, minister, and educator. as the headmaster of the mount hermon school, he was brining the school into the 20th century and making improvements in the curriculum it provided. his efforts to improve the education of the students at the school were cut short one night that september, however, and no one knows for sure who is responsible for that loss.

What a sad waste of a great mans life. From his voluntary service in WW1 to his educational achievements and his modernization of the school, shame.
XxpauldadudexX unfortunately a lot of great people are murdered. Imagine what they could accomplish...
"Education" lol
Why would he, Elder, deny owning a shotgun, if his hunting colleagues had seen him with the gun? He did it. Indeed.
I know this was the 1930s but I don’t know a single hunter who doesn’t own a 12 gauge shotgun. It’s the most popular shotgun in the nation. He should have been honest , you can’t get ballistics from a shotgun anyway unless it’s a rifled barrel with slugs
Perhaps he denied owning the shotgun before his hunting colleagues told law enforcement that Elder ,indeed, had a 12 gauge shotgun.
This could be an Agatha Christie story, right down to the actual murder mystery novel on the guy's shelf.
Ikr? I’m a huge Agatha Christie fan, and was hoping maybe the author of that murder mystery book would be stated in the video. I think she said it was called “Public School Murder”???? I’ll have to Google it! 😉
@@ChaCha.44 a year later, but in case you never got around to it, the Public School Murder was by R.C. Woodthorpe. I did however immediately think of "Cat amongst the Pigeons" which Christie wrote, and which I would highly recommend.
@@ClockworkChainsaw thank you thank you! I will definitely get my hands on it. ☺️ I’ve read every Christie work, including her plays, etc. I re-read them a lot too, they just fascinate me - the way human behavior becomes when certain *ahem* things tend to happen! Thanks so much and have a happy holiday and New Year’s. And btw yeh, Cat Amongst the Pigeons is a great book, lots of red herrings!
Envy is a powerful thing, it can take over someone's entire life, every thought eventually being devoted to how much they resent the other person for whatever reason they choose to place on them. This kind of behavior usually ends poorly for everyone involved. Excellent video, I very much enjoy this kind of content, a small glimpse into history with a twist of darkness from the past. 😊
You're confused with jealousy
@@tulockthewerewolf9744 The nuances of the definitions of the two are debatable, but they are used interchangeably in English and therefore mean the same thing for all intents and purposes.
Agreed Miss Lissy! My Mom always told me growing up that jealousy was a sickness. It took me a while to understand what that meant, but she was totally right. It will make you sick.
How sad. You narrate so Beautifully it really keeps me interested for more. Well done. You are doing an amazing job with your show.
The improvement in her narration is awesome. The quality of her work has always been superior.
The old guy did it. He threatened another guy with a shotgun case closed.
Another case I am unfamiliar with, albeit tragic it is refreshing to have new material instead of rehashed subjects. Thank you
With my cup of "bean juice" and my sweet little dog on my lap, grandma is very happy to be here! This is a perfect place, don't change a thing! Thank you so much! : )
He sounds like such a wonderful man who really had so much to offer! Such a shame that someone took that away! RIP
Years later, Elder threatened someone with a shotgun.
Dang, the guy probably used the murder weapon. Well, he got away with murder but we know he did it.
This is becoming one of my favorite TC channels. I especially like that the amount of backstory on the cases. You have a good feel for giving enough info to make these people 3-dimensional without crossing over into a flood of excessive detail. Your narration is also growing in confidence. I hope your circumstances allow you to keep making videos.
he seem like a great head master
Yes he was. After all, what man, even now, would move to another country to support the education of his wife?
So I wonder if Elder used the same shotgun he “didn’t own,” to threaten the former Treasurer, years later?
Back when "Progressive" meant "allows supervised waltzes between male and female students," it was a whole different universe.
This was very sad but very intriguing. Thanks for the upload!
This was very interesting. Thank you for finding these forgotten stories.
I used to live in Franklin County and I had no idea this famous murder took place.
Those two schools are now merged.
Is it too early to say SEVERELY UNDERRATED CHANNEL
Still the number one underrated true crime YT channel.
Elder done it without a doubt
P.S. I love the background music you use in these videos, it plays along perfectly with the narration.
Fantastic channel all around!
💜💘💜
Gillian Gill
AND..the music doesn’t drown out the narrator.
This particular music is PERFECT!
What a sad story ! His poor wife and children .
A sad and tragic story..but with a drop of beauty in the end. Thank you.
Never change the background music. It really adds a mysterious vibe to your videos. Thanks for sharing such rare unheard cases. I believe you found your gift. ☺😊 ✨🔮
This is wild. My dad went to Mount Hermon in the '40s. He must have known about this case but I don't think he ever talked about it (he's long dead now).
LOVE LOVE LOVE this channel! It’s refreshing to find one that doesn’t keep doing the same stories over and over with a couple of new ones thrown in, and hope no one ever notices. The music isn’t overpowering the narrator and it’s appropriate for the stories presented. Awesome job! Keep up the good work!
I’m so glad I came across your UA-cam channel. Love the way you tell the cases and how you bring light to cases many I’ve never heard of.
Fascinating! Sounds like the plot of a murder mystery, or of an old-fashioned thriller movie.
There are very definitely strong and irrational feelings of enmity and jealousy between professors/administrators on every campus.
Yes for sure. Sometimes they even come to blows. Just think Grad students have to navigate these stormy waters.
I cannot help feeling that no one escapes justice without help from others.
Great video! Another story I've never heard before.
Incredibly interesting but terribly sad chapter in history. I just know they had the murderer and let him walk away.
You could well be right theres a lot of pointers going his way
He let the students read newspapers on Sunday, how dare he.
@zadose It was a joke, I don't believe almost anything I read or see on news network's.
not sure how old you are-- but you seem to not understand what the Sunday edition of a paper contained: comic serials, crime/action, social commentary animation, etc... the only escapist "immoral" and alternative /progressive entertainment teenagers at a boarding school would have had access to in that day. Imagine you don't have instagram or tiktok but one day a week, millenial.
I really love this series! The background music fits perfectly with the story!
I've heard this story elsewhere, but your coverage is so much more professional. The details, the timing, and your metered tones... Absolutely exquisite. ❤️
I love your channel! I love how in depth you go into each case, and your voice is so soothing and makes it so enjoyable to hear you tell each person's story. I find it so important to tell the stories of these victims and remain a voice for them
If happened in 1935 and he didn’t die till 1948, surely the guy was spry enough in 1935 to pull this off.
15 years isn't that long unless you're young. I'm in my 50's and my father is in his 80's and we were both a lot more spry 13 years ago.
I'd read of this murder before & I knew Elder was the main suspect. However, one significant factor against him being a murderer surely must be the commandment "thou shalt not kill"?
Many unsolved murders have obvious suspects, but sometimes "obvious suspects" (those with the means, motive & the opportunity) turn out to be completely innocent.
Are you serious? This fits perfectly with extreme religiosity. It is well understood by many that: The more religious a given society is then the more violent that society is. The only thing that all religions and religious individuals the world over have in common is; the absolute correctness of THEIR beliefs.
@@michaelpalmer4387 I do agree completely with your second post.
@@paulburley7993 yes, he could've justified this to himself religiously. I think most people think they're corrected in their beliefs
Love your site and background music is nice
Forget the 1930's, the changes he made back then would have been radical even in the 80's. As an evangelical, I can attest to it.
Great to see you getting more subscribers and attention to your excellent, well researched videos. 🖤💀 You are going places, Amiga.
The channel keeps growing! Congrats!!
I can’t believe I haven’t heard anything about this story before! I’ve lived within 20 miles of that school my whole life.. and I’ve been up there 🙄.. sheesh!!
Another example of why you are one of the best channels.. you find UNIQUE stories.. thanks again for sharing with us.. keep up the good work!! 💕
Exactly, nowadays Im sure theyd be really drilling the wife, but there were some folks obviously resentful like Elder
Great video, I'm buying the book on this story because of you!
it's a really good read!
Love your channel. You tell alot of stories that no other channels put out.Keep up the great work.
I like the video and - I like this background music the best too. Keep up the good work!
Love that this channel showed up in my recommended. Quickly becoming one of my favorite channels!
How sad to kill someone for their job!!!
chyrel savage Edit: SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!
Right?! And then, didn’t get the job, in the end🙄. 🌈

Why read the comments before watching the video?!?
*Obviously* people are going to be discussing the case!! 🙄 🤦♀️
I am sure it wasn't the first time it happened, or the last.
Hmmm, he was an extremely handsome man. One wonders, someone obsessed? Another great case video, thank you!
Ginger Walker I agree with u! I kinda feel someone obsessed with him shot him! Thanks for ur comment
Was thinking the same thing!
A female -- say a student or teacher from that other college -- wouldn't have used a clumsy shotgun for the deed. Maybe a male at Hermon felt Speer had designs on his wife or g/f? Was it an active affair, or only (much more likely, given Speer's background) one fantasized by the killer? We can prob. rule out some sort of homosexual liaison for the same reason. I do believe Speer likely knew his murderer by sight; the crime scene photo suggests he began to raise the window to speak to that person, who was standing outside. But: the letters Elder faked -- a red herring as to motive -- and his evening drive to a mechanic's, which seemed contrived both to establish an alibi and get rid of the gun -- are decisive IMO.
@@50zcarsman Jealousy could be a motive, you are right about that. He was very handsome so I bet many women were interested in him! He could also have had an affair, his wiffe found out and... no, we will never know the truth here.
@@50zcarsman I do like your way of thinking. But I am stuck on the fact that this man must have roamed campus at times but someone came to his house to blow him away. Not when he was on a lone walk, getting out of a vehicle, etc. That's some powerful passion, be it hate or love or envy or desperation that he be gone! I just don't see such a brazen act as spur of the moment! The word simmering comes to mind.
Imagine having a very fragile concept of Christianity that students reading the Sunday morning newspapers and learning how to dance trigger you into thinking your christian values are threatened.
And who the fuck are you to say that his concept or any other person's concept of Christianity is fragile or wrong ? That's the problem with Christianity and religion as a whole. It's all up to interpretation and that was one of the reasons the church did not want people to read the bibble, in fact, it was not only blasphemous to read the bibble it was a crime. There are people to this day who believe what that man and his predecessors believed, and no, I am not talking about the Foot Loose movie (The original, not the crappy remake), although, that would be an example of how certain sects of Christianity see dancing and signing as blasphemous and as I said there are people to this day, that are raised and taught to believe this crap, just like you were raised and taught to believe the religious crap you believe in.
@@Superman679: After self-righteously, &, IMO, irrationally, ranting, "And who the fuck are YOU to say anyone's concept of.........is fragile or wrong?!," ETC, you,THEN, immediately proceed to tear down, insult, & ridicule THAT said religion & its believers, LOL!! WOW:: Calm yo' tits histrionic HYPOCRITE‼️
✋😲👌
What about : do not murder ?
@@Superman679 - That´s kind of something the Church didn´t allow people to read Bible, and even has considered it as a crime?!
@@d.dedrick7991 LOL That dude is confused and angry.
Very great video. Thank you for making it. Perfect to watch while I get something to eat after a 12 hour shift
Have to agree with many of the other comments, really enjoy the channel and you do feature a lot of stories that aren't covered everywhere else, but that are still interesting, detailed and well told. It probably also helps that I could listen to you read the phone book and enjoy it. Stellar stuff! Thanks.
Great story! Was the older guy, Not one for the police that's for sure. Dropped the ball.
Huh!
Part of her soul died on that step. Oh the sorrow. Poor sweet lady.
I love your channel--always entertaining and informative
He was handsome ..he could have been an actor..it,s rare to be kill by a stranger ..so it is someone who knew him ...
Yvonne Bales I was thinking the same
I love your videos - especially the mysteries from history. The background music and narration are great! One of the best UA-cam channels! Keep up the awesome work! 💞💞💞
Thanks for this upload and keep up the amazing work.
This is great. A lot of good information. Keep up the good work!
I only discovered this channel today and I have been binging on it! Thank you.
Overall, Your show is excellent. I wonder if it could be made any better with the inclusion of a graphical "timeline" of the events and characters. Some of the details would benefit from visual reinforcement (on screen) in my opinion.
I like that it has no distractions.
Sad story. I wonder if the wife of Thomas Elder knew more than she let on.
No doubt. He sounded like a disgruntled, miserable person, capable of lying and jealousy.
I absolutely love this series!
💜💘💜
Such a loss of a Educated and Talented Man. A Loss for a Future leading his Family
So Elder claims he didn't own a shotgun despite the testimony of witnesses who went hunting with him who said that he did. The later threat he made against someone else WITH A SHOTGUN in front of witnesses IMO makes this an open and shut case. I mean, the man clearly lied about owning a shotgun, and the police don't aggressively pursue this?! What a travesty of justice.
Just came across your channel-brilliant. Keep up the good work, your content is interesting, the presentation is great, and I think your channel is going to blow up soon!
Great channel! I absolutely love your work. Keep it up
I have never heard of this case, so interesting & sad! Thanks for the eyeopening case. TY!
Massachusetts mystery! Such an interesting story! This channel does not disappoint. Much appreciated!
A well resarched subject and keep up the awesome work
Facinating case! Love that u do cases i never heard of
Best video so far! I do like when you sound like Lydia from Beetlejuice (please don't take it as an offensive critic, you actually do very well and I loved beetlejuice 😉).. but this video you sounded clear, indifferent and perfect! On top of it the video was good content and perfect background! Good job!
The narrator does a great job and the music is perfect and hot too loud.this is great content too.
This is the best you tube channel love the woman who sounds like wynnoa rider cant spell her name and the background music is out standing
Meh - nothing to develop - she's fine.
Really interesting. Thanks!
Thank you for another great video. I appreciate all the work and time it must take you to bring us these cases.

This is a good show. The background music is perfect. If you develop the narration you will be unstoppable.

What Holly said (her refusal to leave this spot) is very interesting. It doesn't sound like an impartial police investigation.
i grew up mere miles from NMH...never heard of this ....Amazing
Who goes to fix a head light at 9 pm?
This is the besttttttt! Thank you!
From what I read, after his passing, the school modernized, as he had wished.
Nobody thought to check this rifle he threatened this woman with later in life to see if it was the missing gun?
It wasn't. Elder didn't appear at the garage with the gun; he must have disposed of it enroute. He'd have been a fool to keep the gun anywhere in the car while the mechanic was looking it over. That would have helpled send him to the electric chair when the police questioned the mechanic later -- something Elder had reason to know would happen.
Interesting case. I hadn't heard of it either.
I love the new music. At first I was sad about it because I really loved the other background music but it is the perfect replacement.
for now i'm planning on using this music on videos covering a single case and keeping the other music for videos covering multiple cases!
