Today we compare the Ruger LCP II pistols chambered in .380 ACP and .22LR. Both of these guns have advantages and drawbacks. Which would you choose, and why?

If you buy the .22 first, you're going to want the .380. If you buy the .380 first, you're going to want the .22.

I’ve owned the original LCP for almost 10 yrs, hundreds of rounds & never a malfunction of any type. Recently p/u the MAX and am in the process of evaluating that for carry, but it too has been flawless thus far. I saw lots of lives ended w/a .22 during my career so there’s nothing wrong w/it, but my concern is w/ammo reliability in a deadly force confrontation.
I feel the same as you about ammo reliability. Fortunately, the new Federal Punch ammo and the assorted CCI stuff seems pretty darn reliable if the situation dictates I need to tote the rimfire stuff
I could not for the life of me, decide which one to get my wife, who has no experience with firearms. I ended up buying her the .380 Because I feared that the 22 wouldn't be powerful enough to protect her and our daughter when I'm away from home.
I very much regret my decision, because while she is a great shot with the .380, I can't help but think about how much more she would enjoy shooting the .22. I really didn't expect her to enjoy shooting it so much, and the .22 would not only be quieter, and have less recoil, but most importantly, the .22 ammunition would be much more affordable over that of her .380.
Thanks for your post on the LCP II in 22LR and 380acp. I've had my LCP II in 380 since it was first introduced and recently picked up a 22LR version.
The new LCP Max is a great option for 380 offering 10 round and 12 round magazines. The grip is slightly larger making shooting it more comfortable.
I need to get my hands on one of the LCP max models soon. Hopefully we can get one in the shop. We've had a lot of customers looking for them, so Ruger must have done something right
I wish Ruger made this in 32 acp. Keltec has a 32 model that's pretty awesome. And we all know Ruger ripped the design off from Keltec.
They may think there's not enough market demand for a .32 at the moment lol

@@dick-parker yeah, 380. Is more powerful and more affordable then 32. And they can make them just as small. I don't know why anyone would want a weaker caliber and pay more for it.

I carry the LCP 22lr every day as a backup in my pocket. I don’t engage the safety on it because the trigger pull is heavy enough and I put it in my pocket holster and leave it alone. It’s a “wonky” safety and I don’t feel confident that I will remember that in a tense situation.

I agree with your assessment. I do like that the safety is easy to get off. It's a bit harder to get it back engaged, in my opinion, but as long as I can disengage it easily, that's what matters to me lol
Great review, thanks. Just want to say for me that I never keep safety switches on when carrying because it’s a waist of time if trouble arises. I have the lCP II 22 and its awesome. I have allot of 22 rounds and 380 on hand also. I found 380 easier to find than 22lr until recently. The LCP II 380 has the same trigger safety as the 22 version and that’s enough for me as well as the trigger can’t be pulled when holstered. So why use it on the 22 if you can’t use it on the 380. Leaving it off on the 22 makes it exactly the same as the 380 then. That is other than the 380’s trigger can be pulled. If the clip is out but not with the 22 version as it has a safety when the clip is out that the 380 doesn’t have. I’d say the 22 is only better because you have 11 shots available rather than only 7 with the 380. Any hit will stop an attacker as the studies prove. I’m thinking of getting the 380 just for a bit more punch but does that matter when we know it’s hits that count most. The 22 should be faster shooting because of less recoil also. What I’m searching for is which one has he least amount of drop at the longest yardage? I was going to get my wife the LCP 22 like mine but thought maybe get the 380 since I have the 22 version already but I’ll just probably get the same for her unless I find less drop on the 380. I do like more punch though which the 380 certainly has even though that’s not most relevant from my perspective as is just hitting the target or threat.

I have some small 380 pistols and some 22lr pistols. I would feel confident with either as I can competently shoot either one and as long as I do my job the pistol will do its job. The ammo for the 22lr is significantly cheaper and I do get a lot more practice with it. That being said, my EDC is a 9mm subcompact and a 380 micro pocket backup. Thanks for the video.

Great video. I bought the Ruger LCP II .22LR as my everyday backup carry gun, after sending it back to Ruger to have the barrel replaced it shoots great with CCI Mini Mags and Aguila Super Extra ammo... stay away from Stingers and Federal Punch because the cartridges are longer and will stovepipe in the LCP II.
I've had decent luck with Stingers, but haven't put enough Punch ammo through it yet to really say one way or the other. I've fired about 150 rounds of the Stingers.
This is why I much prefer a revolver over a semi-auto when talking about firing 22lr rounds. No stovepiping, failure to feed, and failure to eject issues to think about.
I think they fixed it to where the stingers can feed perfectly in the lcp 2
I liked this! So here is the deal with 22lr! I look at it as an ice pick! So, if I stabbed someone 6x with an ice pick would that do the job? Remember what they use in prison and how successful they are! Yep and I don't even have to touch em. Also the safety is an option or choice.
Thanks for the honest comparison, I have had the LCP2 in 380 for a few yeas, love it as a pocket gun. I just bought an LCP2 in .22 and an LCP MAX. I will likely buy another in .22 if Ruger makes it without the safyey (nice to see added capacity if they figure that out also)

The Ruger LCP2 is a very problamatic handgun. Has feed and ejector problems. My new LCP2 blew out the extractor, after only 60 rouds of brass ammo. I searched the internet and many other LCP2 owners, have had this problem. I don't recommend this hand gun for a EDC weapon. I called Ruger this morning 10/12/2021 about the issue. They said, that the LCP2 is problamatic in this area, because unlike the Max, the ejector is not pinned to the slide, it's just pressed in. They are aware of the issues with the LCP2 and they are sending me a new slide and barrel through the mail. My question is, if they know about this issue, why aren't they recalling this firearm. I will not EDC this firearm with this known defect.
While I can only speak for myself, I've had the total and complete opposite experience
I'd agree except I haven't heard about this and I would think Ruger would redesign something problematic, (like the original LCP trigger). Meanwhile check out the 10,000 round LCP II .22 review also on UA-cam.
I like a thumb safety. That’s just me. If the .380 had a thumb safety I would buy one. My .22 Ruger LCP is my summer shorts and t-shirt close to home in my small town carry. If I put on a buttoned shirt with the tails out I carry my Shield IWB. Winter it’s always the shield.

I got the LCP II 22lr and the LCP Max. I haven’t had a chance to shoot the max but I’ve put 300 rounds out of the 22lr. 200 Golden bullets and 100 CCI Mini Mags with 3 malfunctions. One FTF one FTE and one light strike. It’s once out of each box of 100. I removed the thumb safety and the magazine disconnect safety because I want both of them to be the same so I don’t have to think about it. If it’s chambered, it’s ready to fire. I keep them holstered as the safety. I’m going to put all the Mcarbo Precision springs, hardened pins and the Mcarbo short stroke, flat face trigger on it. I already ordered all the same upgrades for the LCP Max but will run a hundred rounds through it first to see the difference.
I'm a big fan of the 22lr. Pistols. I bought my first gun and it's a 9mm. While I do like it I can't afford to go to the range as much as I'd like because the ammo is so expensive. 22lr. Is better if on a budget.
For sure. .22LR will allow you to build proficiency much more cost effectively than 9mm. However, the argument can be made that dry fire is also cost effective and carries over enough to do the same. Good points on each side.
Went to a gun store today to look. A box of .357 magnum, almost $43.00! I haven't fired a "real" gun in about 13-14 years, and always hand loaded my ammo. I have loaded in about 15 different calibers. This dealer stopped selling powder, reloading stuff etc. He said it's so expensive for that stuff that it's not worth it. Things have changed since I was heavily into shooting, reloading, IHMSA, NRA Hunter Pistol, bowling pin matches, etc, etc. No real shooting ranges on the big island. They were all over the place where I lived for 58 years, in the Seattle/Tacoma area.
I own both the 380 an the 22lr awesome pocket guns, I carry both with confidence,I carry the 22lr with the federal punch, since they both feel about the same the 22lr is cheaper to practice with by far.
I own both as well, and feel much the same as you. I prefer the .22LR due to the extra rounds, ease of shooting fast, and cheaper practice ammo.
Last ditch gun. I went down to a .32.
Now before you laugh to hard .32's have killed more people than most any hand gun. (Excluding war) 1800's to present day. It's actually very accurate at 30 ft. All I need.
The ONLY reason I don't own a .32 is ammo availability and I really can't reliably find components to roll my own lol One day though
I have a Keltec 32 and LCP 22. I like both for a pocket gun and my wife will shoot both...when I insist she shoots ocassionally. Good informative video
If you take the upper (slide, barrel and recoil spring) and magazine off the 22lr, can you put them on the .380? Will it work and/or will the .380 parts work on the 22lr? I know it might sound like a stupid question... but it's actually kind of important for me to know.

Lol! I did the nail polish thing sort of...I used neon green model paint on two of my .38 snubbies. It helped Alot! The only .380 I've owned was a g42 I bought from a coworker a few years ago. I shot it some, didn't really like it much, and sold it back to him! 😆 You are 100% correct on your decision between the two....10 good hits of .22lr is Better than 7 misses with .380
I plan on putting more .380 down range in the hopes of getting more proficient with it. I can see the appeal- I just think it's going to take a lot of work to get good with it.
@@ArchetypeofMan From what I can remember, ballistically it's close to .38 Special I believe. The up side is you get a few more rounds. The g42 I had was Pretty snappy, and truly not that much smaller than a g43, which is 9x19. The Ruger Definitely has the advantage as far as size goes. Either I feel you couldn't go wrong with.
My choice:

@@ArchetypeofMan 32 ACP is becoming scarce here in South Africa, I believe it's due to the PlanDemic. The prices are between +/-25% more than 9mm rounds which is the common round here and it's also not as available as before the PlanDemic.

The answer is so simple (it's just that the wrong question was asked): Ruger LCP Max--hands down. 12+1 capacity; and more reliable (and way more powerful) center fired ammo. Match it with Underwood Xtreme Penetrator 90 gr. (Muzzle Energy (ft. lbs) : 242; Muzzle Velocity (fps) : 1,100), and you've got everything you need in your pocket for self defense against any 2 legged critter you might come across. And if by chance you're worried about over-penetration of the XP out of a short barreled .380 (as to which the chances are slim against anyone wearing clothing), go with the Underwood Xtreme Defense 68 gr. (Muzzle Energy (ft. lbs) : 255; Muzzle Velocity (fps) : 1,300).
I simply don't have access to the LCP Max, and haven't even seen one in the wild yet. lol But I do see the appeal
The Underwood stuff is great, but I doubt the lcp will give those numbers.
Numbers are important, but just a part of any decision about guns/ ammo for us...we seem to boil it down to reliability, simplicity, and trustworthiness...our autos see the range, our revolvers get carried...
I have a big rusting issue with my Ruger lcp max. Barrel and Slider rusting. I am on my 2nd set from Ruger support.

Funny….my uncle called me today and told me about the Ruger LCP Max he just bought. I’m not a .380 fan at all. I have a PPK/S because I’m a Bond fan but thats about it.

Carry for deep conceal a kimber micro .380 love it. Started and still own a s&w body guard which hurt like hell after about 4 rounds. Gave away my ruger lcp .380 after I shot my kimber for about a month. Just bid on a beretta 21 in 22lr so I will see what thats like. Have lots I would rather carry in my collection but unfortunately there are alot of times I just can't print so I carry mouse guns about 50% of the time. Would rather carry anything than not carry at all.

I really like my lcp2 380, I likely will get it in 22lr. For those wanting it in 32, rimlock is a real issue. A revolver in 32 I would like to have, a pistol in 32 no.
I think you've got a valid point about the Rimlock. Recently ran into that with my CP33 and it was NOT fun at all.

Whatever happened to the 32 H&R Magnum caliber? It was a lengthened .32 S&W Long. I used it sometimes for NRA Hunter Pistol. Tiger used to make a single action pistol for it, and there was a few double action revolvers.
If you were to pick one .22 ammo that's has no or least failures in the lcp.22 , what would it be ? I am getting close to getting one. The failure rate is my only concern. Thanks.
I've had great luck with the CCI Blazer 40 grain Lead Round Nose stuff. That's predominately what I've run through it. I've also tried out a variety of other stuff. Personally, I'd stay away from Remington Golden Bullets.
In the lcp 22lr you have to keep the gun clean and lubed. Plus quality ammo with a round nose shape.

From what I've seen, the manual advises to NOT shoot +p ammo through it.
What one to get...well I can just go by my situation..I have a range out back of my house so 22lr for the win..I shot about 4000 rounds through mine so far and I love it..for what it is..needs good ammo if you were going to carry it..agua super extra or golden bullets work good in mine..I'd deffanatly carry mine for a walk about for dogs or wild critters..I have a bodyguard 380 and I like that very much..have a kydex inside the waste band holster that's a nice set up. If 380 ammo was as cheap to shoot as 22 I'd be all in on 380 pocket pistols but 6 cents a round verses 60..I want to shoot lol
Definitely a valid observation. I'm surprised you've had good luck with the Golden Bullets. They have been the least reliable .22LR I've ever used in a variety of different firearms
@@ArchetypeofMan mini-mags and thunderbolts run best in our lcp ll...sometimes 100 out of 100...but we don't trust the gun 101%, so it has just been a decent range toy for us...we have other brand .380, so see no need to get another one any time soon, although the ruger is probably okay...

Be nice if they made a 22mag. Probably not much different than the 380 as far as knock down power but 22mag ammo is a lot cheaper if you want to practice a lot. And you should.

I'm pretty sure Ruger wants you to buy both of them so that they make more money. They seem to be marketing the 22LR version as a "trainer". But then they go and give it two additional "safety" features like they are lawyering up with this pistol. A true trainer would be exactly the same so that only the recoil impulse would be different.
Yup, my thoughts exactly. I like both, but I'd still go with the .22LR over the .380 unless you have an assload of .380 sitting around and the time. The .22LR is just easier to shoot accurately, and cheaper. But that's coming from the mindset that these are backup guns, and rarely, a primary. I'd still advise a bigger gun in 9mm over either of these, personally.
What holster are you using for the 22lr?
I was using the pocket holster it came with for a while. But I've switched to a DeSantis Pegasus for IWB now, normally carried appendix.
22lr is easier to find and cheaper than 380acp. I personally like the 380 version and I have shot both.

I go 380 acp. We actually have fools to deal with in my state. Where I live a 22 is last resort, only option. When protecting your life a 380 is about as cheap as I go. Not sure about hunting with a pocket or mouse 🐀 gun. We have mountain lions where I have lived. They take along time to track you. We had a person who used to hunt them down. And lower there pop in the 80 s. I cannot say I never had 1 track me. So 380 for me. Heck I might have been good 👍😊 because we had many stray cats.

Good video. I too believe the LCP2 should be in 32 acp. I had the LCP and the P3AT. Both were snappier that the LCP2. I have the LCP2 22lr and I think your assessment is right on. I like Ruger but if I were looking at 380 I would get a Glock 42. 1/2" more barrel makes a difference in JHP performance.

One advantage of the 22 is that you have more rounds than the 380 so you get 4 more chances but it would likely be harder to convince a jury that you used "excessive force" since 22 is literally the lightest caliber, at least that I know of. Seems a good lawyer could argue that you in fact were using a weapon intended to stop, not seriously injure or kill. Maybe. But I'd want every advantage I could get in that courtroom.
For last line of defense up personal situations I’m not going to trust a striker fired 22lr. Great little rounds, but lots of failure to fire, and it might not necessarily be the guns fault. Stick with 380 cause it will go bang

I had the LCP II , wasn't any good with it. Made the same analysis, and sold it.

I also purchased both, and then my 68 yr old Mother commandeered the 22 so of course I had to purchase a 3rd LCP2. I have been lucky with all 3 running well without problems of any sort..
@@undagroundhustla the slide catch on my 22 keeps catching half way through a magazine. I think it's a break in thing. Ruger says they have a 500rd break in period so we'll see the more I shoot it
Dave the cause of your problem is pushing up on the magazine while shooting. Just adjust your grip and I bet no more problem.

Many videos mention how cheap 22lr is to shoot and practice with, as well as how easy it is to find and stock up on. I think that is not a good way to look at self defense. If you ever get shot or stabbed and your laying on the ground, fighting for your life while waiting 10 minutes on an ambulance, are you gonna give a damn about money? At that point, I bet you'd give all you had, just to live and make it back home to your loved ones. I'm not arguing over the power of a 22lr vs 380 for self defense. I'm just saying that the whole this ammo is cheaper thing, is not a way to select your defensive carry.
Just carry what you perceive to be the best round to defend YOU and your family. If that means a 22lr is what you can handle because of recoil and the amount of rounds it holds, then so be it. Just don't keep saying that you bought it because the rounds are cheaper and easier to find. We have the internet now. I order my ammo online and can find anything these days. 5 retailers might be out, but I have hundreds of gun stores all across the nation at my fingertips with the internet.

@@angelomartinez9039 I currently carry a Glock 26 for the last 2 years. It weighs 29 ounces with my Kydex holster that I conceal carry, clipped to the waistband of my pants. That is loaded weight with 10 rounds of ammo.
The problem I'm having is that I'm in Louisiana and it gets very hot throughout the summer. I prefer to wear shorts most of the summer and Glock, even though it is compact and considered a light 9mm, is still too heavy for my shorts. It pulls them down on whichever side I carry it on.
With my phone in my pocket, my wallet in the other, my keys and my small 2oz pocket knife, it's just too much for the shorts. So I decided on switching my conceal carry to the Smith & Wesson 351PD, which is a .22 Magnum that holds 7 rounds. It weights a little over 13 ounces loaded, another 2 ounces for a Kydex holster. That will cut 14 ounces off my carry weight, which is almost a pound.
I feel confident in the .22 magnum and the 7 rounds is nice. Anyone standing in front of 7 rounds from that gun, will not be standing in the end. The other choice would be the Smith and Wesson Model 43c which is chambered in .22lr and holds 8 rounds. That fully loaded would be 12 ounces loaded with 40 grain bullets. So i could shave off another ounce and gain an extra round. However, i'd lose the extra power of the magnum round, albeit it's not much more.
Federal makes the .22lr ammo called "Punch" and it has been doing great in all the youtube tests I've seen. I did think about the Smith and Wesson 340PD chambered in 357 magnum as well. Weighing around 14.5 ounces loaded with 5 rounds of 357 ammo sounds great for knock down power, but every single video says that the recoil is insane and it hurts your hand to shoot it. I can probably handle the recoil and pain in an emergency situation, but it would be hard to practice with on a regular basis and I keep thinking the 22 magnum, I get 2 extra rounds.
I'm buying next week, so I have to make my mind up, but I'm strongly leaning to the 22 mag for myself. If it were my wife, I'd go with the .22 lr because it is hammerless and might be easier for her to draw and not snag on anything. Recoil for either is not hardly anything at all. They are loud as heck, but recoil is a non issue.
If you carry 22lr Make sure it’s a revolver trust me
I can see the reasoning there. For me, the added capacity, easier and faster reloads, and demonstrated reliability- at least with my LCP II make it my preferred .22LR for carry, on the rare occasions when I do so. But I do understand why you feel that way.
@@ArchetypeofMan I have a lcp22 I love it .. After trying many different ammunition brands it has lot of hiccups . personally I found that Remington was mostly flawless. So after doing some research I went and got a Taurus 942 revolver and boy that always goes off unless the round is bad and all you have to do is pull the trigger again so In a self-defense situation it makes me feel more comfortable .

If it has it, I try to train around it. Rather get in the habit of deactivating the safety than it getting inadvertently put on safe, and NOT being used to sweeping it on presentation.
I have a Walter PK380 (obviously. 380) and a Bersa Thunder in .380 (because it looks like a Bond gun at a fraction of the price of a Walther. Love em both though I think of them as "girl" guns. I call .380 rounds girl bullets
I think that it's a viable round. I don't gender any rounds... Lena Miculek and many others might take exception with you for doing that.
We love our Bersa...and .380 is like every other caliber, all depends on accurate shooting...and I don't like to admit it, but my missus might be a better shot than me, in every caliber we own...😲
