  • CCI has entered the chat! In this, the fifth(?) installment of shooting review videos of the Ruger LCP II "Lite Rack" .22 LR we make the final determination on the guns reliability, thus it is the ultimate range review - featuring the 40 grain Aguila Super Extra and new box of 40 grain CCI Velocitor ammunition!
ProChrono velocity test results show the Velocitors’s average muzzle energy at 92.5 ft-lbs out of the 2.75” barrel!

Quite a bit of spread on those velocities?

    • @GeographyCzar
      @GeographyCzar  3 роки тому +1

+/-6% and yes, I was surprised by that too. I was expecting more like +/-3% with CCi ammo. On the other hand, my very old ProChrono, which I bought used, is maybe not as precise as it should be anymore. I will definitely retest the Velocitors when I get a new chronograph. Even so, an average of 92.5 ft-lbs of energy from a 2.75" .22 auto is outstanding. That's over half of their rated muzzle energy from a rifle!

I have a Sterling Model 302 semi auto pistol with a 2 inch barrel. The extractor blew off when I shot CCI Stingers in it. I replaced the part and spring. Since then i haven't shot any hyper velocity 22s in it. I made up a chart of velocities and recoil energy from other brands using data from their web sites. I was surprised by some. The energy from the Stinger out of the 2 inch barrel was 67 foot pounds. The Aguila Velocitor was 69, the Interceptor was 83, the Winchester segmented was 83, the Winchester Silvertip was 92, Federal Champion training 22 was 80 qne the Minimag 40 gr roundnose was 75 foot pounds. all higher than the Stinger. Some was due to the heavier 40 grain bullet but several surprised me if my figures are accurate. The extractor breakage may not have been due to the Stinger. It may have been brittle stainless steel in the part or a blown out rim. In looking at the chember the chamber appears rough and may affect extraction and timing. I want to error on the side of caution but some of the high energy really surprised me.@@GeographyCzar

I love my Ruger .22. Tiny and cheap to shoot. I literally put it in my pocket and carry it all day, just like my wallet. It takes no change in wardrobe, no decision about type of holster to work with what I’m wearing. No self-conscious concern about it accidentally showing. Just part of the wardrobe.

1021 fps with a 40gr bullet sounds much more suited for self defense than a 29 grain bullet and slightly higher velocity...

i looked at the .22lr punch and decided to go with winchester 40gr HP at like 1400 fps. obviously not that much out of a pistol, but to me that just sounds like alot more energy coming out of the barrel.

Cool stuff. Back in the AWB days, the only magazines I could get for my Colt AR-15A2 were USGI and whatever were mass produced before the ban kicked in. There were no fancy magazines like we have today. I would mark the ones that I had feed failures with. It didn't take too long to work out which magazines were just garbage and stop using them.

Put a spring kit in mine from galloway precision. I have only had 2 failures to feed with all sorts of various ammo over the last year of shooting almost every evening im home. Pretty sure those failures were because it had gotten dirty. Love my lcp. The spring kit made it one of the most reliable autoloading pistols I’ve ever messed with.

What do you think makes the most difference in the kit? The recoil spring? I don’t have issues with light primer strikes but sometimes the slide doesn’t lock back or the slide will prematurely lock back. It was much much worse I sent it to ruger they mostly got it running but not where I want it for a .22 I know .22s will never be 100% but I’d like at least 95% reliability or something

I tried at least 6 different brands/loads in mine and found these things are temperamental. Anything with a wide hollow point caused me issues but once I found what it liked, I have had zero issues since. Mine is fun to shoot, is now reliable and spot on at 20 to 30 feet. The CCI Velocitor runs about 882 FPS out of a 2 inch barrel. The Velocitor rated the highest at about 69 foot pounds of recoil energy of all the 22 ammo I have done calculations on. A 40 grain bullet often makes a big difference.

Thanks for posting the vid. Got mine today and ran 100 rounds through it. It currently does not like the Velocitors or anything that is slightly longer. Ran CCI standard, Eley Club, Blazer, and Golden Bullets with no issue. I had the high feed issue and noticed it was only on the Velocitors. It was an easy fix by pushing the round down slightly and it chambered, but not anything I would trust. The other ammo was flawless. Going to try the Silvertips and Punch next. Thanks again for posting.

I've never shot velocitors but I did find a box of some of Aguila's equivalent loading and BOY they were noticably louder than high velocity ammo and especially louder than standard velocity ammo. It would be cool to see you get a hold of some and compare them to the velocitors from various barrel lengths.

We got an LCP II .22 in at the end of September for a demo/rental gun and put a few hundred rounds of various ammo through it over the next two days. We were experiencing a 25% failure to fire rate from light primer strikes. At the end of the second day, we got an RMA from Ruger and back it went. They replaced the hammer and hammer spring and sent it back. It worked much better, with just an occasional light strike, but the slide lock would engage about once every 3rd or 4th mag with rounds still left in the mag. After a couple weeks and a few hundred more rounds, the rear of the firing pin broke off. Another firing pin is on the way. Stingers I think are just too long, and would often give a nose up jam into the chamber. The Aguila 40 grain Super Extra rounds result in the slide stop engaging far more often than anything else, pretty much every mag - perhaps the extra bullet weight and high velocity are the culprit - videos conclusively show it is not the shooters accidentally hitting the lever.
We've got about 1500 rounds through it, with field strip and cleaning at least every 150 rounds, and our experience with this one example would lead us to not recommend it to customers as a defensive carry gun, but we'd like to try a couple more before committing to a full thumbs down. If you seriously think you need to carry a defensive pistol, one that jams or otherwise malfunctions (slide lock) every fifty or hundred rounds is completely unacceptable.

bought some new mags a few days ago. They seemed different when loading. Then shot em and they worked quite a bit better. so mags are killing it as well as a weak hammer spring. Got the sigard spring kit and it helped alot. Update: I found that if you check the spread on the mag lips, they can cause issues when they are too spread out. I roll the feed lips on some ar500 steel to press them in just the slightest bit. Will take a caliper to the feed lips to seee what the optimum spread is.

Take that bad mag and throw it down into your woods there. Don't keep it as it may accidentally end up in your rotation. Mags are not expensive enough to risk your life for when you need the gun to work. Many times guns get blamed for poor mag performance. Good job diagnosing the problem.

The mags are made very different from a normal mag with this gun, It has an enormously long coil spring that powers the follower. On a gun this size we'd normally expect a mag capacity of 6-7. A full size Ruger Mark 4 only gets 10 in the mag. This must be the reason for the new odd design and maybe this is the reason it is a little more finicky. It's very strange but it works in the 2 mags I have.

A couple weeks back, I scored a 500 round pack of CCI Velocitor. It cost me dearly and I couldn't buy more because of rationing. Anyway, I just purchased a Beretta 21A Bobcat in 22LR on Gun Broker. Hopefully I'll have it on hand before the next weekend. I don't know if I'll ever use it for concealed carry. I have 14+1 TandemKross conversions on my LCP2s and carry one on my leg and the other in my right back pocket. I carry standard mags as backup and have learned that about 25 percent of them don't function properly without stretching the springs. They also need to be cleaned regularly. I've have been carrying for 50 years with everything from 9mm to 45, but I only carry these easy to shoot quick and accurately little pistols now.

When the LCP fails to feed like that (I think you called it high nose) can you tell, is it the slide lock engaging prematurely? Or is it the cartridge getting wedged in the opening so that the slide can't close?
I read some reports online that the slide-lock tab which is normally pressed by an empty magazine can sometimes be toggled by a loading cartridge, causing the slide to lock out prematurely when the mag isn't empty yet. Not sure if that is what you are experiencing here.

I have had my LCP II 22lr for about a little over a year, fired about 250-300 CCI mini mags through it and it broke. I couldn't pull the trigger., it was like it never reset. Sent it back to Ruger, got it back in less than ten days. They said the trigger bar was replaced. I fired it yesterday (total rounds since I got it back was about 250 -300) and, IT BROKE AGAIN. Same issue, trigger felt like it never reset. Anyone else have these issues? I think Ruger is more intent on getting guns out the door rather than making quality guns. It wasn't like this when Bill Ruger was alive.
