This group was always over the top with silliness! Many 1st time reactors think VH is cheesy, but ridiculousness was a common 80’s vibe. We lived in the moment and never took life too seriously. We lived for the moment. Live and let live, baby!
Since Eddie instantly established himself as a “rock guitar god,” it surprised many listeners when he began playing keyboards on songs like “Jump.” Later on, we learned that the piano had in fact been his first instrument, and he had won four consecutive classical piano contests in his youth.
Eddie had the best smile, he sparkled. This song isn't a favorite of most Van Halen fans. You gotta promise me you'll listen to Drop Dead Legs off of this album. The rhythm is mind blowing, Ed makes that guitar sound downright sleazy and I freaking love it!
I remember that night! Last year I was in the car with my boss and this song came on. I mentioned I remembered the premier on MTV on Jan 1, 1984. He looked at me like I grew 2 heads...he may not have realized just how old I really am! 😂
The thing about Van Halen is, they're a lot like Metallica in that they have eras of sounds. If you listen to them in the late 70s and early 80s, it sounds different than mid 80s. And then David Lee Roth left the band and they got a new singer, Sammie Haggar, who gave them a completely different sound. This was one of their biggest breakout hits that got them a ton of play time on MTV in 1984. Check out "Panama" and some of their earlier stuff, but definitely check out some Van Haggar too!
With Van Halen, its 90% about Eddie. He was just such a natural talent, like Mozart or Jimi Hendrix, and had this absolutely winning personality. His joy was entirely infectious.
Van Halen had a lot of great songs with both David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar. My favorite is Ain't Talking Bout Love, but other great ones include Panama, Beautiful Girls, Running With the Devil, Jaynie's Cryin', Dance the Night Away, Dreams, Why Can't This Be Love, and Best of Both Worlds, among others.
Ain't Talking is probably my fave, too. But everyone you listed is worth listening to. Among many other tunes. One of a kind band that we'll probably never see the likes of again.
Ya. Ain't talkn bout love has been my fave for many years now. It passed Unchained out of nowhere one day hahaha. I went from saying Unchained Ain't Talking bout love Panama To flipping the top 2😂
Van Halen's first album came out about 1978, and it was brilliant. A real tonic for us rock fans who were being bombarded on the radio at the time with the disco fad.
A lot of people don't know but the Van Halen family came to America from Holland with their 2 sons, Alex and Eddie, both less than 5 years old, who were child prodigies on piano. Eddie revealed years later in an interview that he couldn't read music and that he just watched his piano teacher play the song and then just copied where the teacher put his hands on the keys. You have no idea how impossible that is!!
Another tidbit is that Eddie played drums and Alex played guitar at first. Than after a few weeks they figured out that they didn't really care for playing them instruments so they switched and the world bècame a better place
From 1978-1982, Van Halen put out 5 albums and toured non-stop. Their last of those five albums, Diver Down, didn't do so well. So the band put their collective foot down with the record label. Took a year off and made the album 1984. Super polished album. Had multiple mega hits. Eddie wanted to show that he was more than just the guitar God we all knew him as. So they added some synth, as that was an extremely popular thing to do in the mid-eighties. Sidenote: The Van Halen brothers actually switched instruments as kids. When they were young, Alex was given a guitar and Eddie was given a drum kit. They each liked the other's instrument better.
You need to get into the meat and potatoes of VH...their early stuff. Atomic Punk, Running With The Devil, the actual album version of Eruption, Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love, And The Cradle Will Rock, Everybody Wants Some, Mean Streets, Unchained, Cathedral, Where Have All The Good Times Gone...
The lead singer is David Lee Roth, and he is a martial artist, and that is why he can do such extraordinary moves on stage. And of course Eddie Van Halen is as always fantastic on guitar and keyboard!
Such a great song to lift your mood! Love this song for that, among other things. Note: if you see zebra stripes on bright colors it’s 100% 80s. 😂 We had such a wide variety of music, style, etc. Made it a fun time to be alive!
Great reaction as always dude! This song was more pop-rock sounding because the times were changing. The glam rock scene was heating up and many bands from that scene were exploding or about to explode and reach the heights of rock stardom. Van Halen were already there and the album this is on was sort of like their glam rock/"hair metal" album. It's full of fun songs and well worth exploring.
I've never been massively into Van Halen, so I could probably only name a couple of songs such as this one. And other people have probably already said this, but guitarist Eddie Van Halen played the guitar solo on Michael Jackson's "Beat It", uncredited.
Honey-this was THE 80s!! David was so sexy and an excellent front man, Eddie was beyond adorable and one of the best guitarists ever (RIP🥺) and all together they always seemed like they were having a blast🥰Back when things were nice-genuine fun. Didn’t have to worry about offending or ‘triggering’ some fool who can’t get over themselves😤
Jump is the biggest commercial hit Van Halen has ever released. The song went to Number #1 on the Billboard Hot 200, and after 40 years since its release, it’s undoubted popularity can be heard most everywhere - from film, to sporting events to addies on the telly. Undeniably catchy hooks - well written and performed
Really enjoy your reactions on all these past decades music. You are so forward and honest, not afraid of your feelings in how the music affects you. Just came across your channel yesterday 9/25😲 (oops 9/23)and had to subscribe. Have already watched alot of your reactions and must say you are in your own right to rewind as much as you feel to the music. I have watched other reaction creator's and none compare to yours. Keep up and keep on.
⏯️ I was 11yo when "1984" came out. This entire album is a part of my DNA now. EVH was a great pianist. His finger tapping technique was inspired by how the hammers strike the strings in a piano. Synthesizers were some of the new technology at the time. Like everything new (digital recording, autotune, etc) it has a way of seeping into everything until the next "new" thing. VH has a long career and a deep catalog with 3 different vocalists. There's a lot of variety. 🧡
The “radio” releases had to meet the play length requirements. Live versions are where you get longer instrumental solos, etc but with some artists and bands the presentation sound quality of live shows doesn’t equate to the pristine studio rendition.
Yeah, radio versions sucked. If you were lucky, the album versions had the intended length and solos, etc., but the live performances were usually where you'd find the most energetic versions of songs - though, like you alluded to, sometimes the audio quality suffered when live-recorded.
Eddie great guitarist his brother is a great drummer and Dave Lee Roth is a great entertainer I saw him live when his band had arguably all the best musicians in rock/metal... Steve Vai live was incredible.
1984 album is called 1984 and from Van Halen 1 to this album. Our collective minds were blown away. It’s fun playful and the guitar is utter perfection. Right aboit when Mtv was in their heyday. This was school time for me. Touching my soul. Every note Eddie has played.
I'm with you MB.if you have a literal god on the guitar like Eddie, it's sort of a crime not to have a solo that shakes your very soul. This is the stuff that we listened to before we found Metallica. It was on the radio, it was on MTV, and it was passable, but for an 80's teenager, it more or less showcases the mainstream safe stuff we listened to, but were looking for more.
When the Van Halen's came to America they earned their passage by playing music on the ship. Their father played clarinet and Alex & Eddie played piano. Eddie was a competition level classical pianist. He got in trouble with his teacher when she realized he never learned to read the music. He faked reading by just listening and watching her hands. He has a photogenic memory
This was on regular rotation on MTV.I have never seen a guitarist smile & enjoy performing,as Eddie did.before or since.Eddie & brother Alex took classical piano when they were young boys
David Lee Roth... "Runnin' With The Devil" and "Atomic Punk" from Van Halen (1978) Beautiful Girls" from Van Halen II (1979) "And The Cradle Will Rock" and "Everybody Wants Some" from Women and Children First (1980) "Mean Street", "Dirty Movies", and "Unchained" from Fair Warning (1981) "Where Have All The Good Times Gone!" and "Pretty Woman" from Diver Down (1982) "Panama", "Top Jimmy" and "Drop Dead Legs" from 1984 (1984) Sammy Hagar.... Eddie and Alex were both trained as classical pianists as kids and won awards for it. Between 1964 abd 1967 Ed won first place every year at the Long Beach (California) College annual piano competition. It was natural for him to add keyboards to their sound at some point, similar to what Pete Townshend did with The Who.
🇬🇧 I LOVE this song. The 80's were the best of times, and to be in your late teens, early 20's, well you can imagine. It was an absolute privilege to be that age, and be exist in the 70s and 80s. ❤🎼🎶👌
I got to hear this when it came out in the 80's. I was in highschool 1980-1984. Loved being in the MTV era! Not necessarily my fave VH song but a good one just the same.
Eddie was a classically trained piano player. I love that you could always see the joy in his face - he always had a sexy, mischievous smile on his lips. 🥰 I always play this song at full volume, whether at home or in the car 🤩
the boys are from my area I can still remember seeing them playing the Backyard parties. That, was in the mid 70's (I'm 66 I graduated High School in 1976)
Jump got huge airplay on MTV and on the radio. Van Halen was huge, especially in the early-mid '80s, in truth, through the whole decade. Loved 'em, even when they became "Van Hagar."
The 80's was a time in which there was a shift in music. Punk was all but gone, disco music had carried on from the 70's and into the early 80's and refused to die. This disco music began to morph into what was referred to as 'pop' music, which forced a number of rock, metal and heavy metal bands to change, albeit reluctantly, the way they played music. Sink or swim, basically. Bands such as KISS, who released songs such as 'I was made for loving you', 'Sure know something', etc. Although, KISS played a kind of 'Glam Rock'. Strange days indeed, but the result was some of the most amazing music to be released during the 80's. Great times.
Released in 1983, with lead singer David Lee Roth. This was a song I enjoyed with my two daughters at the time of its release. They were about 8 and 10 years old and really starting to enjoy all sorts of music.
Running with the Devil, Aint Talking About Love, And the Cradle Will Rock, Jamies Crying or anything from their first couple of albums is rocking Van Halen. This was early 80's and they did go a little pop with this one (still love it though).
Eddie & his brother Alex, the drummer, were both classically trained on piano since they were very young. They did recitals and competitions & did very well. Their dad was a musician. He was Dutch & their mom was Indonesian & they were born in Holland. Came to America and couldn't speak any English & were bullied, except for the Black kids who were nice to them. Eddie tells that story. Anyway, Eddie was a very good pianist, he had a grand piano in his home.
1984 album was a more commercial success than their earlier albums. Van Halen's first and VH II have the guitar rock sound that I loved the first time I listened to them.
This song the album 1984 epic and huge here in South Africa sweet memories. Love their music pity they done greetings from South Africa and MollyBoy love your reaction
I love the fact that everyone is recommending different songs, which is an indication of how great their catalogue is. But if you want to see VH with a harder edge then “Mean streets” is the business.
One of my favorites... out of a lot of favorites! They were just damn fun. This was "experimental" back in the day... rock with synth. But they made it work.
This light not be one of their harder rocking songs, but it’s brilliantly written & played. U can see they were having all kinds of fun just being laid back.
Eddies first instrument was a piano, learnt it as a kid and there is a lot of keyboards on their songs because of it. This is a great song, gets you going, very upbeat.
You probably wont see this comment. From what i understand you only check comments for the first lil' bit after posting, and this was posted 4 days ago, but i just discovered your channel. I'm binge watching your videos, watching your reaction, listening to your comments and discussing the music, the talent and your opinion and feelings. Im hooked. I keep looking for some of my faves, and love watching your experience. Thank you for sharing your journey ( back) to some of the best classic rock, and even the blues ( like CCR, and Stevie Ray Vaughan 🔥) . I cant seem to get enough of seeing your genuine, (I really appreciate how you explained if you have truly heard the song that you would not 'fake' it and say its your first ) reaction❣️

Hell yeah! This album in particular was how the boys were. Just having a good time and rocking some summer tunes for us to enjoy.
100%
The ultimate showman, ultimate guitarist and ultimate party band. Sadly missed
So true
@@bk4832-r4g i se them in stockholm van halen ac dc and muntly crue monster of rock big party
He destroyed his legacy in my opinion with his treatment of Michael and him being replaced by Eddie’s fat spoiled untalented kid.
In my opinion Running with the Devil is the gold standard of Van Halen before the MTV friendly Jump etc.
I completely agree. Yes to Running with the devil.
Just came here to say the same .. Jaime’s Cryin is pretty fire as well
Agreed. Runnin with the Devil is so good in its own way. Nothing quite like it before or after.
Running With the Devil is a hell of a way to open a debut album.
Great track, but the 1984 tracks are great too.
Atomic Punk
Since Eddie instantly established himself as a “rock guitar god,” it surprised many listeners when he began playing keyboards on songs like “Jump.” Later on, we learned that the piano had in fact been his first instrument, and he had won four consecutive classical piano contests in his youth.
And went on to use the fretboard on his guitar as a piano :)
Please do ain't talking about love - Van Halen you will be in awe
Yes
They were MAGNIFICENT in their live concerts and I was lucky to have seen them at their peak. R.I.P. Eddie.
Me too! They were my first concert back in '82! Blew my mind!
Yup! Vancouver, May 1st, 1984.
Yep me too 😊
My first concert ever was Van Hagar 1995 ❤
@@foreveralone11w LOL I love your description of that name back then when Sammy Hagar became the new front man.
Some of my favorite king Edward riffs!
This one does happen to be my favorite VH song
Yeah, the way he smears that riff in Drop Dead Legs is awesome. The whole album is killer, IMO.
I love this video because of the sheer joy you see on Eddie's face every time he's on camera. You can see how much he loves what he does.
This album is called "1984" and THIS video premiered on MTV at 12:00:01 AM, January 1, 1984. I remember watching at 12 years old. =)
I was like 14 and in 9th grade. Whole bus was jamming to this within days of its release.
I was going to be 22 19 days later living all black ghetto South side of Detroit yesterday I'm white LOL
Same here, except I was 10 you old fart lol
I was 17, and got to see them on this tour. DLR wore chaps with his bare cheeks out, and we were sitting close, on the side of the stage.

Working in special education for years, this was one sweet boy's FAVOURITE song. Non-verbal but he didn't let that stop him from rocking out
“This is not what I was expecting at all”. That’s what us metal heads said also back in 1984.
Van Halen is widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists in rock history
In other breaking news, water is wet.
You mean Eddie as his brother Alex was also in the band. Yes, Eddie was a great guitarist, but the band was a bit cheesy for me.

Any decent band that has a long career should grow and change musically. If they are honest with themselves, anyway.
That’s the way it should be

Iconic song!! Out in 1984. It’s played literally everywhere. 👍

Their debut album and Diver Down are my favorites.
Ain’t Talkin’ ’bout Love, best riff and the delay and flanger effect is insane \m/
I love seeing Eddie. Matter guitar player gone too soon. He reminds me of my baby brother--he passed away at 18. They had that same smile.
This is a feel good song for pop listeners, rake in the money back in the day.
Running with the Devil, Aint Talking About Love, And the Cradle Will Rock, Jamies Crying or anything from their first couple of albums is rocking Van Halen. This was early 80's and they did go a little pop with this one (still love it though).
And The Cradle Will Rock, Everybody Wants Some, Little Guitars, Intruder/Pretty Woman, Where Have All Good Times Gone, and Ice Cream Man
Yes you are right this was 'Glam Rock ' ❤
1984...off their Van Halen 1984 album. And thank you, once again, for selecting this song for your reaction.
They are a great example of a pioneer band of this genre of classic rock
They have that glam metal style with the keyboard so iconic 😮
80’s! I’d go back there in a heartbeat!
The was a MONSTER hit when it came out. That riff is imprinted on my brain forever.
Eddies first instrument was a piano, learnt it as a kid and there is a lot of keyboards on their songs because of it. This is a great song, gets you going, very upbeat.
Hey, short but sweet, and always enjoyable reactions. 🤘
Eddie always smiling. Such a cutie
This song is so iconic !!!!
Running with the Devil, Jamie's Crying, Dance the night away, Unchained. Lots of good choices for Van Halen
Miss seeing Eddie live with always having a smile as he played
