I always felt Eddie's guitar playing overshadowed Alex's drumming but it really shouldn't have done because Alex is one of the best drummer's in rock history yet he's so criminally underrated.
Some old family friends of ours are in a cover band, and they play this song. The drummer also sings it.. Which isn't the most absurd thing to think about until you get into the pre-chorus, where the timing gets goofy, and the feel of the drums, and the vocals is very different. Dude is crazy talented
Van Halen were THE party band in the 80s. Before the term "hair metal" was coined, there was "teeth metal" because the band members were smiling! The singer WANTED to be there! This band invited girls to come along for the ride, as opposed to the darker metal that had existed before. This was definitely the feel good, fun song of 1984. Great reaction!

Their album 1984 was highly anticipated. Back in the day there were release dates of albums. I know they still do it, but it doesn’t compare to the old days. By this time Van Halen was huge and I remember going to the record store with some buddies the day this album came out. Crowded, long lines, but the vibe was happy. Some people were buying the album, some the cassette and some were buying both. Popped the cassette in the cassette player once back in the car and, man, we weren’t disappointed. We had smiles just like the ones in the video.
They are in their prime and having the time of their lives. The energy is infectious, full of joy. This video is so well done capturing some beautiful smiles, dancing and goofing around not to mention the great talent on one stage. One of the great positive and early music videos bringing back fabulous memories. The beauty of youth, happiness and hope for the future. 😎❤💫

That was why Van Halen appealed to so many women in the peak of their career. Despite the goofy and smiling party image, Van Halen was a mix of drugs, alcohol, tensions and egos clashing... 'Jump' became a #1 single in 1984 (their only #1 hit) but it was a tough sell for Roth because he opposed Eddie Van Halen playing keyboards on Van Halen records. Eddie Van Halen wrote the music on keyboards in 1981 but Roth hated the track and refused to write lyrics and sing on it... David Lee Roth was the singer and he acted like the band's taskmaster - only he would decide which songs would make it on Van Halen records... Fed up w/ Roth's hesitation, Eddie Van Halen insisted in 1983 that 'Jump' would be on the Van Halen '1984' album... it was their first synthesizer-heavy song (along w/ "I'll wait") that made the record. Roth wrote the lyrics to 'Jump' apparently inspired by TV footage of a guy on the ledge of a building attempting to jump and take his own life! But it was perceived as an inspirational song... Awww, I was weeping right along with you! It's such a beautiful song; it was an instant classic when it came out, as soon as you heard it. I wasn't even a huge Van Halen fan particularly when it came out, but this one was undeniable. Gorgeous melody, gorgeous keyboard riffs, great changes, great playing......a perfect record.
Just a trivia mention since you've been captured by Eddie's unique sound and enjoyed "Eruption" - the instrumental song for the end credits of Twister is by him and his brother Alex, "Respect the Wind".
Fun Fact: Eddie basically co-wrote and PRODUCED Michael Jackson's Beat It (he basically changed everything from the tempo to the instrument choices and more...and according to both MJ himself and Quincy Jones, Eddie MADE it the hit it became). Eddie was an all around talent.

Hi Aileen, Like your channel. You have very cool reactions. Being a musician, songwriter and vocalist myself, Van Halen was one of my favorite bands. They have so much interesting history too. You were talking about Dave's high kicks, well, not only was Dave into martial arts and martial arts weaponry but he also had a triple joined back. This is why you'll see him in some videos where he can bend backwards extremely far. Also, both Eddie and Alex Van Halen took piano lessons as kids. Eddie was actually the first one to play drums before his brother. He got them as a young teen and had a paper route that he was working to pay on his drums. But when he was working, his brother would play his drums. Eventually he got better on drums then Eddie so then he deiced to start playing guitar. They had some weird demands in their touring contracts such as a big bowl of M&M's but no brown ones. So, somebody had to pick out all the brown ones before taking them to their dressing room. lol Their dad was also a good musician. He played guitar and clarinet. The band actually had him come in the studio and play clarinet on a song titled: "Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now). It's on the band's album called "Diver Down". And it was actually David Lee Roth's idea to have Eddie and Alex's dad come and play.
The M&M's in the contract/rider served a practical purpose (See Wikipedia and sources): If the bowl, without brown M&Ms was present, then the band, management and crew could safely assume the other, more legitimate concerns in the technical rider were fulfilled; conversely, if the bowl was missing, or brown M&M's were present, then Van Halen management would be within their rights to have their crew or the venue inspect the work, redo it or even cancel the night's production at the venue's expense.
That guitar tapping technique that Eddie had...many people think that he brought it into the rock music scene. Well, he came up with the name of 'tapping', but the actual guitarist who influenced his playing and who was the one introducing it into the rock music scene was called Steve Hackett. 🙂 He was in the band Genesis from 1971 to 1977. And there are three songs that showcase his tapping technique: The Musical Box, The Return Of The Giant Hogweed and Dancing With The Moonlit Knight. 😊😊

Some of the groups I grew up with are Seals and Crofts, Bad Company, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Carpenters, Three Dog Night, CCR, Deep Purple, The Doobie Brothers, The Sweet, Doctor Hook, Steely Dan and many others. We used to have American Top 40 every Sunday night.. We also had The Midnight Special and later on Don Kirchner's Rock Concert. It was a whole different world then. I really enjoy seeing young people hearing the music I grew up with

A.S., for those of us that literally grew up with the influence of the band's music- and the evolutional journey of Eddie's work. Now that he is gone, it feels like there is a part of us that is missing. It was like losing a friend. I saw the band on the opening night of the Balance tour. They were with Sammy Hagar by that time.

I remember the TV channel Eurosport sometimes played this song but with video clips of race cars flying in the air (always synced to the word "jump") and then crashing, when I was a kid in the 80's. Took a while before I understood that wasnt the actual video for the song lol.
In the 60's, 70's, and 80's there was creativity, vibrant colors, and a great vibe - everything was alive. The air seemed lighter and far more refreshing. There's oppressive stagnation in the air today and a heavy vibe. Ominous clouds seem to have formed on the horizon and it's hard to enjoy the here and now, knowing that they're there.
Jump was a massive hit, BECAUSE it was such a fun, feel-good song with that touch of an edge. The video was all over MTV. Couldn’t wait for it to come on! And Eddie was humble, which is something considering how great he was at his craft. Next do Panama!

Awww, I was weeping right along with you! It's such a beautiful song; it was an instant classic when it came out, as soon as you heard it. I wasn't even a huge Van Halen fan particularly when it came out, but this one was undeniable. Gorgeous melody, gorgeous keyboard riffs, great changes, great playing......a perfect record.

Fun Fact: Eddie basically co-wrote and PRODUCED Michael Jackson's Beat It (he basically changed everything from the tempo to the instrument choices and more...and according to both MJ himself and Quincy Jones, Eddie MADE it the hit it became). Eddie was an all around talent.

Damn, you made me get misty when you talked about Eddie. I grew up with these guys, and that wonderful, infectious, playful attitude of most of the bands at that time. I miss it. We're so serious now. I miss the playfulness, the joy, the appreciation, and almost innocence of that music. Sigh .. the world turns, I guess. Old guy out.

Hi Aileen, Like your channel. You have very cool reactions. Being a musician, songwriter and vocalist myself, Van Halen was one of my favorite bands. They have so much interesting history too. You were talking about Dave's high kicks, well, not only was Dave into martial arts and martial arts weaponry but he also had a triple joined back. This is why you'll see him in some videos where he can bend backwards extremely far. Also, both Eddie and Alex Van Halen took piano lessons as kids. Eddie was actually the first one to play drums before his brother. He got them as a young teen and had a paper route that he was working to pay on his drums. But when he was working, his brother would play his drums. Eventually he got better on drums then Eddie so then he deiced to start playing guitar. They had some weird demands in their touring contracts such as a big bowl of M&M's but no brown ones. So, somebody had to pick out all the brown ones before taking them to their dressing room. lol Their dad was also a good musician. He played guitar and clarinet. The band actually had him come in the studio and play clarinet on a song titled: "Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now). It's on the band's album called "Diver Down". And it was actually David Lee Roth's idea to have Eddie and Alex's dad come and play.
The M&M's in the contract/rider served a practical purpose (See Wikipedia and sources): If the bowl, without brown M&Ms was present, then the band, management and crew could safely assume the other, more legitimate concerns in the technical rider were fulfilled; conversely, if the bowl was missing, or brown M&M's were present, then Van Halen management would be within their rights to have their crew or the venue inspect the work, redo it or even cancel the night's production at the venue's expense.
That guitar tapping technique that Eddie had...many people think that he brought it into the rock music scene. Well, he came up with the name of 'tapping', but the actual guitarist who influenced his playing and who was the one introducing it into the rock music scene was called Steve Hackett. 🙂 He was in the band Genesis from 1971 to 1977. And there are three songs that showcase his tapping technique: The Musical Box, The Return Of The Giant Hogweed and Dancing With The Moonlit Knight. 😊😊

Some of the groups I grew up with are Seals and Crofts, Bad Company, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Carpenters, Three Dog Night, CCR, Deep Purple, The Doobie Brothers, The Sweet, Doctor Hook, Steely Dan and many others. We used to have American Top 40 every Sunday night.. We also had The Midnight Special and later on Don Kirchner's Rock Concert. It was a whole different world then. I really enjoy seeing young people hearing the music I grew up with

A.S., for those of us that literally grew up with the influence of the band's music- and the evolutional journey of Eddie's work. Now that he is gone, it feels like there is a part of us that is missing. It was like losing a friend. I saw the band on the opening night of the Balance tour. They were with Sammy Hagar by that time.

We all cry with you because Van Halen was an important part of our lives through one of the best decades in our history. Also we didn't know it at the time but the 1984 album would be the last hurrah for the original guys because David Lee Roth would part ways with Van Halen for the following year you should do a review of the entire fair warning album it's one of Van Halen's darkest albums the supposed critics of the time didn't think too much of this album but the fair warning album is one of Van Halen's crowning jewels and contains some of their best work that they have ever done

THE feel-good rock song of the early 80's
I remember the TV channel Eurosport sometimes played this song but with video clips of race cars flying in the air (always synced to the word "jump") and then crashing, when I was a kid in the 80's. Took a while before I understood that wasnt the actual video for the song lol.

In the 60's, 70's, and 80's there was creativity, vibrant colors, and a great vibe - everything was alive. The air seemed lighter and far more refreshing. There's oppressive stagnation in the air today and a heavy vibe. Ominous clouds seem to have formed on the horizon and it's hard to enjoy the here and now, knowing that they're there.
Perfect reaction from start to finish. These guys were special. Eddie one of a kind. The greatest.

Jump was a massive hit, BECAUSE it was such a fun, feel-good song with that touch of an edge. The video was all over MTV. Couldn’t wait for it to come on! And Eddie was humble, which is something considering how great he was at his craft. Next do Panama!
