Van Halen were THE party band in the 80s. Before the term "hair metal" was coined, there was "teeth metal" because the band members were smiling! The singer WANTED to be there! This band invited girls to come along for the ride, as opposed to the darker metal that had existed before. This was definitely the feel good, fun song of 1984.

One of the greatest opening hard-driving guitar riffs from the 80's... no lead in, no intro... just an explosion of Eddie blasting through the speakers from the drop of the needle. Their album 1984 was highly anticipated. Back in the day there were release dates of albums. I know they still do it, but it doesn’t compare to the old days. By this time Van Halen was huge and I remember going to the record store with some buddies the day this album came out. Crowded, long lines, but the vibe was happy. Some people were buying the album, some the cassette and some were buying both.
Popped the cassette in the cassette player once back in the car and, man, we weren’t disappointed. We had smiles just like the ones in the video.

David Lee Roth (Van Halen's original vocalist) said that Van Halen's sound was rock music that had grooves that u could move and dance to... along w/ vocal harmonies that were memorable. That was why Van Halen appealed to so many women in the peak of their career.
Despite the goofy and smiling party image, Van Halen was a mix of drugs, alcohol, tensions and egos clashing... 'Jump' became a #1 single in 1984 (their only #1 hit) but it was a tough sell for Roth because he opposed Eddie Van Halen playing keyboards on Van Halen records.
Eddie Van Halen wrote the music on keyboards in 1981 but Roth hated the track and refused to write lyrics and sing on it... David Lee Roth was the singer and he acted like the band's taskmaster - only he would decide which songs would make it on Van Halen records...
Fed up w/ Roth's hesitation, Eddie Van Halen insisted in 1983 that 'Jump' would be on the Van Halen '1984' album... it was their first synthesizer-heavy song (along w/ "I'll wait") that made the record. Roth wrote the lyrics to 'Jump' apparently inspired by TV footage of a guy on the ledge of a building attempting to jump and take his own life! But it was perceived as an inspirational song...
Van Halen's '1984' album sold 10 million copies in the US and was a huge hit on MTV and radio w/ the singles 'Panama' ... 'Hot for teacher'... "I'll wait"... but on tour that year, the band was imploding w/ substance abuse and infighting... David Lee Roth was always drinking and barely singing onstage and the others were no better off...
In 1985, David Lee Roth recorded a solo EP 'Crazy from the heat'... hoping it would become a Hollywood movie while Van Halen were on a break. Eddie Van Halen was writing a new album which was keyboard-heavy and Roth was not enthusiastic about the music... Somehow, Roth parted ways w/ Van Halen that year.
Unsure of how to move forward, Van Halen contacted numerous singers... ultimately hooking up w/ veteran solo singer Sammy Hagar, who finished the next Van Halen album '5150' in 1986 (which went to #1 in the US charts) ... while David Lee Roth launched his solo career w/ the album "Eat 'em and smile"...

VAN HALEN: I SAW ALL THE TOURS WITH ROTH FROM VAN HALEN 1 IN 1978 TO 1984 AND AGAIN IN 2013! I SAW 5150, OU812, FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE AND BALANCE WITH HAGAR. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER EDWARD VAN HALEN!!! RIP EDDIE
My favorite Van Halen tour shirt is from this tour-Fair Warning. The band on the front with Worldwide Tour on top and 81 with a circle ⭕️ around it on the bottom and world tour 81 on the back with the VH LOGO and Van Halen written in the logo!
My second favorite Van Halen tour shirt after Fair Warning in 81. Band on the front World Vacation Tour 79 on the back.

Fun Fact: Eddie basically co-wrote and PRODUCED Michael Jackson's Beat It (he basically changed everything from the tempo to the instrument choices and more...and according to both MJ himself and Quincy Jones, Eddie MADE it the hit it became). Eddie was an all around talent.

Awww, I was weeping right along with you! It's such a beautiful song; it was an instant classic when it came out, as soon as you heard it. I wasn't even a huge Van Halen fan particularly when it came out, but this one was undeniable. Gorgeous melody, gorgeous keyboard riffs, great changes, great playing......a perfect record.

I think the word "precious" to describe them in this video is perfect (especially Eddie's smiles🥰)... precious is perfect!!🙃 Now if you wanna see another fun video, check out "PANAMA"... it's a banger!!!👊It reached #2 on Billboard's US mainstream rock chart and #13 on Billboard's Hot 100 for a reason, but the video is something to behold!!😜 Peace and light to all...💞

That guitar tapping technique that Eddie had...many people think that he brought it into the rock music scene. Well, he came up with the name of 'tapping', but the actual guitarist who influenced his playing and who was the one introducing it into the rock music scene was called Steve Hackett. 🙂 He was in the band Genesis from 1971 to 1977. And there are three songs that showcase his tapping technique: The Musical Box, The Return Of The Giant Hogweed and Dancing With The Moonlit Knight. 😊😊

What you are feeling is desiderum, a sort of nostalgia or melancholia for something you never experienced. The feeling of seeing something so nice, uplifting and good, thinking about the a time and a place that is long gone now, and that you'll never get to experience other than by seeing the shadows of it like you did here.
The only solace is that in 50 year some young woman or man will be having the same feeling that you're having now relating to your era, and all the fantastic things you are experiencing now.
The Portuguese actually have a word for this feeling. "Saudade".

The best description I've ever heard of Eddie's guitar playing came from his brother Alex. When they were kids Alex played guitar in a band. Eddie the younger brother wanted to be involved so they put him on keyboards because they didn't have keyboards in their songs. But Eddie was happy to be there for the rehearsals. One day Eddie asked Alex if he could try Alex's guitar, and since they weren't doing anything important at the time, Alex said yes. Eddie and a guitar was like "spontaneous combustion", and Alex knew a change needed to be made. Alex put together another band and moved himself to drums with Eddie on guitar. This became the first incarnation of the band Van Halen that we all now know and love. Thanks.

I liked the way Sammy Hagar described Eddie’s playing, he said “I can express myself well on the guitar, the difference between me and Eddie is that he can say what I say on guitar, but he can say it in six different languages.”

Fun fact , on Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” , that crazy guitar solo in the middle of the song is Eddie VanHalen. Rumor is he re arranged the music to fit in his solo. He grew up poor so he would put his guitars together w old parts from different guitars, LEGENDARY

So many of their early songs are party songs and fit in at any backyard bbq, beach or boat party. The thing that always stuck out to me was that they were the type of songs to listen to with other people or groups, they're so fun and lively that impromptu air guitar sessions and loud group singing were unavoidable.
It will be interesting to see how you respond when you eventually get to Sammy Hagar since for many fans that era is a battleground.
