R.I.P. King Edward. Missed so much. Eddie was self taught. That’s one of many things that make his style so unique. Eddie didn’t have to learn the guitar. The guitar had to learn Eddie.
AMEN....and, AMEN!
Eddie wasn't really self taught tho... he grew up in a very musical family. Yes guitar wasn't his first instrument, more like his 3rd, but he just wasn't satisfied with playing normally and was always thinking outside of the box.
@@Blackdog06019
In terms of guitar, he was "self taught".
Best quote I've heard " The guitar had to learn Eddie"
I really hate to correct you my friend. Clearly we are both big fans. BUT I really feel that the title for him should be SAINT Edward. Guitar God that he was. There will never be another like him.
That's not guitar playing, that's guitar sorcery. Extraordinary! RIP🌹🎸
Sooo happy younger people are still finding their way to this music. You'll get so much more out of listening to rock, metal music
Couldn’t agree more as someone whose favorite band is Van Halen, I’d also throw in Prince because greatness and genius isn’t only confined to Rock. Both Eddie and Prince were one of a kind gifted musicians!! Fact!
So true buddy 👍
pick any two VH albums and put them up against Randy Rhoads two albums with Ozzy and Randy will always come out on top.
I love watching younger people and people stroll over from a different genre and end up loving what we grew up with. Bands and concerts were phenomenal. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Nearly 40 years ago. And STILL holds up!!
I’ve only cried 3 Times when 3 musicians left this planet-Neil Peart, Stevie Ray Vaughan SRV and Eddie VH! RIP brothers!!!
Randy Rhoads hit me equally as hard when he left; as the the greats you mentioned. As if I had been punched hard in the stomach.
AMEN!!
Grinning ear to ear while SLAYING the guitar,Eddie was a sight to behold!🎸🔥😁🤯
EVH gives the impression of someone who's managed to catch a live lightning bolt in his bare hands and is just effortlessly channeling the pure of energy of it out to the rest of us.
Cool (also sad) bit of trivia - Eddie donated his iconic yellow & black guitar to Dimebag’s family when Dimebag was murdered. The guitar was buried with him.
Rip dime bag and his brother
Eddie Van Halen and Stevie Ray Vaughn are the GOATs imo. Two different styles but both equally amazing. Oh, and I've seen them both live. I saw VH open for The Doobie Brothers in the mid 70s and I was at Stevie Ray Vaughn's last concert the night his helicopter crashed after the show at Alpine Valley, Wisconsin USA August 26th 1990. One of the saddest days of my life. RIP SRV & EVH!
At 9:15 he starts using his left hand to fret (play) the notes and his right hand is turning the volume up and down perfectly in time with the echo that he has as an effect on the sound. It's absolutely mindblowing.
The crazy thing about that part is, if he would miss it only some milliseconds the whole thing would fall apart.
And he was drunk off his ass when he filmed this. Not my words...his.
R.I.P. ❤
Drunk and other things. He couldn't even remember that concert.😂 @@markgirard647
It's a pretty simplistic technique. However, nobody can do it like Eddie did. It takes such precision in timing. He was the master.
@@markgirard647 - Yup... utterly smashed. Sammy said he'd been drinking all day and could barely walk upright. When later shown this footage, Eddie had no recollection whatsoever of playing that concert.
Eddie at his finest with his talented brother on drums. R.I.P. Eddie. You MUST check out Stevie Ray Vaughan in Texas Flood LIVE at the Macombo.
Stevie Ray and Johnny Copeland playing Tin Pan Alley is another must see.
Seconded.
I saw Eddy Van Halen four times live. He always impressed. Every time there was something new, that was absolutely unbelievable ---> beyond description. He was a master. And live, it was just shocking hearing him make that guitar sing... RIP Eddy.
RIP Eddie. He made the guitar talk. He made it make sounds and did things nobody else has done.
The Van Halen brothers are 2 in a trillion. Monster musicians.
When Eddie was a teen,he started on drums, and Alex on guitar. One day Eddie picked up his brother's guitar, and the rest is history! Btw,Alex is a great drummer.Eddie also worked at a music store in his younger years ,and would sometimes dumpster dive guitar parts, and play around with different sounds. He also became friends with Les Paul, the maker of Les Paul guitars. Many people affectionately call Eddie the "Mozart" of guitar!
I was there that was 1986 and seen him in 1982 and 1984 he was like a superhero to me as a teenager....he just needed a cape!
He left the capes to Dave!!..LoL!!
RIP King Edward. The guy changed the way guitars are played and the way they are made, a true world changer in the guitar and Rock realm.
Stevie Ray Vaughn. Texas flood live. Another must see guitar performance.
You should see this whole concert. It's called, Live Without a Net.
I'm in the U.S. I've seen Van Halen 8 times. I was at the "Live without a Net" recorded concert. There are many extremely good guitarists , but EVH is king of the 6 string.
That was at the New Haven coliseum in Connecticut right? That place got demolished a while back.
@@marshallgraphic yes, demolished, they recorded that 2 consecutive nights.
Saw that tour in Houston about a month later. It was awesome. BTO was a great opener too.
Outstanding reaction, young man. There will NEVER be another who will influence as many guitarists as did EVH. NEVER EVER. And his influence continues....
Another ULTIMATE!! Stink Face is 'Stevie RayVaughn' Texas Flood,.live 😉
We’ll never see anyone like him again, in our lifetime. RIP Eddie.🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
I was 18 when their first album hit the stores……me and my buddies looked at each other of….WTF did we just hear😄😄
Alex's drum solo from this show is amazing also.
Young men have been hearing this since 1978 and asking -how does he do it -may it continue another 50 years
The GOAT. RIP 🎸🔥💥
I got to see him do this live a couple of times. We knew that we were watching greatness, and when he would start, it felt like the whole crowd just leaned forward to be just a bit closer to him.
Yes!! The best here too. 😢 RIP EDDIE VANHALEN
EVH was the best. Van Halen as a band may have been a little hit and miss, but I’ve never seen a rock guitarist as gifted or as game-changing as Eddie… maybe Hendrix but it’s hard to compare the eras.
And Randy Rhoads!
RIP Eddie... I first saw VH open for Black Sabbath. Yikes what a night!
Eddie was an amazing guitarist and influenced so many, similar to the way Hendrix did a decade earlier. My beef with VH was their songs/compositions mostly juvenile level - which was their market and made them big bucks!
My personal GOAT was Stevie Ray. Loved his mix of blues, rock and Hendrix style plus the guy played from the heart. Every time! I was fortunate to hear him perform 8 times before he passed. Texas Flood live at El Mocambo is a religious experience.
I also enjoyed Joe Satriani as others have mentioned. Great live shows!
If you want your mind blown (again) check out BucketHead. He's no joke and up there in GOAT contention. Checkout live performances of Jordan or Soothsayer.
I feel blessed to have seen Eddie 6 times! In fact, VH was my first concert back in '82 on the Diver Down tour, and he's been my favorite ever since. One of the things I love most about him, aside from his otherworldly talent, was that he was almost always smiling. He looked genuinely happy to be up there on the stage, like some kind of wizard, blowing people's minds!
Jesus what a phenomenon he was RIP Eddie the world misses you mate ❤
I’m 50 years old and I still get goosebumps when I listen to this and he’s the greatest rock guitarist of all times just like dimebag is the greatest metal guitarist of all time the goats
He inovated. He shredded. He motived nearly every famous guitar player after himself. He played with more character than most. He also wrote dozens of billboard topping songs. He played keyboards, he had fantastic stage presence and he even changed guitar playing with his EVH amps. There isn't a thing you could do in the guitar-playing genre that he didn't invent, master or at least add to. Yeah... GOAT.
FACTS
“THE” GOAT !! RIP EDDIE!!! 🤘😎🔥💜
Your life just changed after watching this
He customised that fender hiw he wanted it to sound ..he called it a frankenfender..he used to play with his back to the crowd when he first started to play so nobody could see how he set it up and copy his unique sound ..❤
frankenstrat*
Ive seen them 6 times..and each solo is different..he just goes through a library of work to put together a cohesive solo live and its amazing mistake free guitar work..hes the best
Or if he made mistakes, just kept playing and did it that way again so it looked like he meant to. (Lesson taught by Eddie and Alex’ father)
I believe this was actually his warm-up routine before a gig, just freestyling between snippets from different songs and someone else from the band suggested he should actually do that during the gig on stag as well... and the rest is history.
Eddie started out as a classic pianist. Someone forgot to tell him that a guitar could not be played like a piano. He is the Motzart of the electric guitar. I've seen a ton of great guitarist in my lifetime but Eddie, is by far the G.O.A.T. Not because of his work with Van Halen per se but for the fact that this dude couldn't find a guitar that would do what he wanted so he stripped two different ones and built his own. He was far ahead of his time. R.I.P Eddie. Oh and if interested, check out the interview he did at 60 where he explains his thought process and your mind will be blown.
Your reaction was spot on, mate. Speechless. Just like we all were back in the late 70s and early 80s when we heard EVH's new riffs for the first time. He changed rock and roll guitar forever. I'm so happy that you have discovered this amazing guitarist. Cheers, mate!
I've never gotten to see Van Halen in concert, but Eddie, in my humble opinion, is the guitar GOAT. Legend! I have never heard, nor seen, anyone who can compare to him. I do have some I consider to be great guitar players, but Eddie is in a league all his own.
Guitar God:
Eddie Van Halen
Top 5 guitarists in my opinion:
1. Angus Young from AC/DC (I saw him perform a 20 minute solo in 2008 which blew me away)
2. Slash
3. Carlos Santana
4. Jimmie Hendrix
5. Jimmy Page
Now my top Canadian guitarists:
1. Jeff Healey (a blind musician and singer)
2. Neil Young
3. Rob Baker from The Tragically Hip
4. Kim Mitchell
5. Randy Bachman
though I will say many consider Canadian Rik Emmett to be one of the best guitar players of all time. He ranked in at #162 out of 536 on the 540+ World's Greatest Guitar Players of All Time list, ranked #99 out of 385 of the best lead guitarists of all time list, and ranked #70 0f 172 on the Best Metal Guitarists and Guitar teams.

Eddie Van Halen is a legend. King of all guitar players out there. Glad you got to hear his awesome music!
To this day he has revolutionized the way Guitar is played.
RIP Eddie!
awesome awesome awesome! you just absorbed my entire teens and 20s...that was FUN!!! I don't mean to be greedy but please do more Van Halen! :) EVH was the greatest ever...changed Rock and Roll guitar for a generation or more... TNX!
I wasn't at that show. But was at one in Charlotte N.C. I can't talk at all the next day for screaming and singing . I will never ever forget that solo. My mind to this day is still blown away. R.I.P Eddie.
Virtuosity little brother. He was a master. RIP.
I saw Van Halen during this era. He was married to Valerie Bertinelli at the time, an American actress. He did this solo laying on his back while she walked to the center of the stage on the concert floor and he and her kissed the entire solo. What a sight to see. The audience cheered the entire time.
You poor youngsters totally missed out. Us older cats grew up listening to King Edward and TRIED to replicate him. Lots of guys got close but never cought up. So happy to see you younger players getting to see total mastery at work and I hope it inspires you all to , in the words of the master himself " just keep playn' " !!!!!!! Have fun!!! I know I have and I've been playn' since I was about 10 years old and I'm 59 now so yeah I been doing it for a long time!!!! 👍👍👍👍
Eddie had his own sound. He made the guitar make sounds no one else could duplicate. one of the 🐐 s
Eddie Van Halen was a BEAST on the guitar - made sounds that people only THOUGHT of.....should check out more, Dear! :)
I saw Van Halen twice in concert at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in the 80's. Back when David lee Roth, the original singer. They put on a great show. I'm 57 now. I enjoy your reactions.
You need to hear Dimebag Darrel. They were great friends . Check out Pantera Dominion live in Moscow 91.
I've seen this performed live twice. Always epic.
He's very mesmerizing to watch play and the sounds that come out of that guitar he just doesn't play strings he plays the whole guitar❤
Saw van halen in concert twice and eruption is a spiritual moment
You are indeed correct. Edward Van Halen was sooooo on fire that even Michael Jacksons camp invited him to do the guitar solo on Michaels hit song ' beat it '. Edward Van Halen G.O.A.T.🎸🎸👑👑 You should react tosomething from their 1st album?? Ain't talking bout love or Jamies crying and...LISTEN TO EDDIES STUDIO GUITAR SOUND....DAYUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM enjoyed ur reaction and subscribed 😁😁
Eddie is and always will be the best damn guitar player ever. RIP King Eddie, we are blessed with lots of his material to enjoy.
I saw Van Halen support Black Sabbath in 1978 at the Glasgow Apollo on the Never Say Die tour. They blew the, then ailing, Sabbath OFF the stage. This demonstrates why.
I saw them on this tour in 86 when they played here where I live. He played basically the same solo, meaning it followed the same sequence of musical piece's. It was an incredible concert, and still is in the top 5 concerts I've ever seen. I love when people discover stuff they've never heard before, and are as blown away as we were the first time we heard/saw it. That look of incredulity on your face was funny, knowing you just heard something that blew your mind. 😁 Keep exploring the old stuff, and broaden your musical horizons. Happy listening. 🤟
I saw Van Halen in 1984 a year before this concert. Eddie Van Halen was phenomenal. I’m so glad I got to see them. Eddie’s passing was such a huge loss. His son Wolfgang is also a musician, he toured with Van Halen for a few years playing bass. His band is Mammoth WVH. Check them out. Wolfgang does a beautiful tribute to his father.
What I love is, that his first solo on this video, was like a speed run through all his little pieces that he played there.
I wasn’t at that particular show but Van Hagar was my first big stadium concert on that same tour at BC Place in Vancouver, BC 🇨🇦.
And yeah, as magical as Eddie was on vinyl, he was mind blowing in concert! I wish I’d seen him more than twice in my life (exactly 18 years later to the day, again in Vancouver), but I’m glad I can say I got to see the maestro live in concert.
Saw VH dozens of times live. Nothing comes close to them as a band. But, Edward is special in history. We knew it. It was obvious this guy was a gift, and WE got to be here to experience him. Nothing sounded or FELT like his solo. It resonated in your bones. His tone was from somewhere else along with his playing. He was tapped into something. He is it. Period. They may as well close the book.
His expressions and boyish smile shows his talent excites him tbe same way it does us
Eddie's brother Alex is on the drums. An outstanding drummer.
I have to listen to this solo at least once a month and always gives me goosebumps❤
That is the best guitar solo of all time, stop searching. So blessed to have seen him live in my lifetime. Long Live Edward
I was 100% at the same concert but in Texas in 1988 and he did the Eruption Solo and it was Beautiful the best part of it a friend from High gave me 2 a few days before the concert because emergency came up for him .. The tour was for OU812
This is quite funny for me, as a 53 year old. You sit there, and have listened to the start. You like it and you smile. I smile too, because I know what is to come. Then you hear the rest and get into some kind of shock. No words. That is EXACTLY what every d***ed musician felt like when they first heard this. Eddie - a Force of Nature. Now, I wont say he was the best guitarist in the world, because there are so many styles and ways to play. BUT. Eddie is surely sitting at the table of The Best Players in the World. RIP Eddie - have a drink on me.
Saw them in Shreveport '86, first time ever on stage together with Sammy. I've never felt concert energy like that since.
If you haven’t done so yet, I strongly suggest checking out the man who started it all in the late 1960s, Jimi Hendrix. Anything live is spectacular but I strongly suggest “House Burning Down” from his album Electric Ladyland. Jimi did things in the studio in 1967 that has yet to be equaled, even with today’s technology. Trust me, you won’t be sorry. 🎸
Eddie Van Halen literally changed the world of music overnight.
I've seen them four times back in the '80s and '90s with both Sammy and Dave, didn't see this concert, but Eddie was a sight to behold, brought tears to my eyes many times.
I saw them live around 1980 for their second album tour, and that is one of the most memorable shows I've ever been to. Everything about it was insane and he also did the longer version of Eruption at that show as well although a lot of the content was different, but but the main themes from the shorter album version were absolutely there, they were kind of the foundation of it.
Congrats on your 10K Day!
Blessed to see this live during their first ever tour in 1978, Oakland, CA. Fell in love with Eddie instantly. We had never heard guitar like that before. Everyone was in shock. By this performance he improved so much and got much more comfortable on stage. Glad you got to see him.
Sir Edward was and will remain an icon and a legend. What he's doing with the tapping is only because it's an electric guitar...hard on the finger tips if they aren't calloused enuf.
I’ve seen Eddie do his solo 4 times live. I still can’t comprehend his ability. Live…it is absolutely unbelievable! Without Words! Just plain AWESOME! In a whole other league!
I saw them live at MSG just cause I figured I had to see VH once in my life….went home from the show and immediately bought tickets for the next night.
I always found David Lee Roth to be a bit of a clown, but goddam is he a good rock frontman. And nothing else needs to be said about Eddie and Alex.
Eddie smiling and playing. Van Halen in concert was fun, fun, fun!
That was “Live” check out the studio version of “Ice Cream Man” The swing and solo of that song are insane!!!
It is so fun to watch peoples facial expressions as there brain tries to process it all . Eddie was the first at many new things and a true legend and KING of the hammer ons . I was lucky enough to catch Van Halen twice live in the 80,s and they were SO good ! Just awesome to see younger generations discover this man and his many talents .. RIP Eddie you will be missed Sir ! Great reaction !
The late 70s and the 80s was the golden age of guitar. Besides EVH there was Satriani, Vai, Morse, Holdsworth, Rhoades, Dimeola Eric Johnson etc.... to name a few.
Now you have Met The Greatest In the World!!! RIP Eddie! We love You Forever.
When he’s twisting the nob, that called a volume swell.
This solo started out as being a warm up exercise Eddie would do before club gigs or where ever they played. Their debut album,in 1978, a producer had the idea & Eddie agreed to have it as a track for that record. It took only one take.Over time it grew with bits of songs or Eddie experimenting with different sounds, effects. He never played it the same way.Eddie would either add or take away parts. From 1978-2015 all over the world
That’s just eruption, this is a bunch of songs put together and other bits
@@RiderVilly I thought that's what I said.bits of songs..Like a small portion of "Mean Streets"towards the end
There’s interviews on UA-cam of Eddie talking about coming to America as little children from The Netherlands and they didn’t speak English and how he had a hard time adjusting to school. He was an amazing guitarist and I do believe the best in the world. We lost an icon, but he’s left behind a son Wolfgang, who is a pretty decent musician with his own band called Mammoth.
He was the god of guitar! I’m crying listening to this. 😢
I was there front row it changed my life forever. It hit me in my soul I learned more about playing guitar in that 2 hour show than I have the rest of my life. I miss him every day.
It blew my mind. The concert continues for 4 hours. I will never forget it
I agree with you MollyBoy...he is the greatest guitar player in the WORLD...and pretty much everyone will say the same.
He is actually deemed the world's greatest ever by pretty much the whole music world/industry 🙂🙂
I was not at that particular show, where and when this was recorded. But I did see Van Halen back in 1995 here in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. At a little something we used to call Ottawa Super Ex. They had Our Lady Peace(Canadian band) open for them. When the time came for Eddie's solo, the crowd was quiet and listened VERY intently as the maestro showed us, HIS mastery of the guitar. It was incredible, it was insane, it was beyond what any of us thought a man could DO to a guitar. It was quite simply... Eddie Van Halen. Funny thing is, when the Van Halen brothers started out. Eddie was the drummer and Alex was the guitarist. They eventually switched, and the rest is Rock n' Roll history. R.I.P. Eddie. Gone, but never forgotten. 🤘🤘🤘
Well, I wasn't at that show, but I was a young guitarist, close to Eddies age, living in So Cal, and though I was ok, until I heard Edward play. Inspirational--Yes and depressing at the same time😂
This was done in middle of the Live without a Net concert. The whole concert is a showcase of EVH talent. Never be another like him. Thanks for great reaction. Ps.the section where the spotlight turns blue he is timing notes with the volume knob. Really extraordinary.
Listening to that solo again gives me chills, WOW
Van Halen was so popular when I was a teen and I grew up listening to them on the radio all the time. They had so much airplay. I love their music and especially "Ain't Talkin' About Love" and "And The Cradle Will Rock", "Jamie's Cryin'", "Runnin' with the Devil", "Little Dreamer" which is one my all time fav songs ever!! I play guitar but not like Eddie! LOL.. it is tapping, hammer on, pull offs, slides etc. He was one of the top guitarists ever because he invented alot of what is being done today. No one had ever done most of what he did before. He was truly a gifted musician and his brother too on drums.
In my estimation Eddie was the greatest rock guitarist that has ever lived and stylistically will never be able to be replaced based on his immense raw passion and talent! Long live King Edward! ❤
7:02 The most epic, badass, rockstar, rock God moment ever recorded
He’s turning the main volume knob up and down in that slow middle section
Without question the GOAT of rock n roll guitarists. Possibly any guitarist.. RIP Eddie ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
He also played drums and won high school competitions on the piano and wrote music a true musician
He’s the KING. The GOAT. I watched this hundreds of times as a kid and went to other shows. This was filmed in New Haven Ct in the U.S. (which they called New Halen). It’s an amazing show and this is the centerpiece.
