He’s repeating something he overheard workers in an appliance store saying, with that offensive slur. Well, the whole song is based on that encounter. He’s not saying it himself. It’s what he heard them saying. And they’re the ones that deliver and install the appliances. And they’re jealous of how easy rock stars have got it.
@seamusburke639 we all called our best friends that multiple times daily back in the 80s. Nothing serious meant by it. "You use Colgate toothpaste? You must be a F". Little stuff like that no matter what the subject was.
Yes, Clayton has it correct: As I explained when I suggested this track previously -- Mark was in a hardware store; on one whole wall of the store there were TVs tuned to MTV (Music Television); he overheard the workers making derisive and griping comments about the men in the videos and how easy those guys had it compared to their own blue-collar jobs (moving TVs and refrigerators etc.); Mark grabbed a pen and paper and wrote their remarks down verbatim, and they became the lyrics of the song. Given that they (Dire Straits) are musicians themselves, singing the lyrics in an MTV video, it's also somewhat self-parodic and good natured! Moreover, it's fitting because in contrast to some the 'glam rock' of the time, Dire Straits was 'pub rock'. As to the 'offensive' word at issue: 1) That was the word used by the blue collar workers themselves in the hardware store about the guys in the MTV videos (2) it was very common parlance at that time, and (3) it was used more to suggest 'poser' or 'pretty boy' (glam rock) rather than homosexual (i.e. gay guys wouldn't be concerned about getting 'chicks' for free, would they?). Context is everything! Lastly, am thrilled to watch you go down the Dire Straits rabbit hole!
It was also a big thing to be a sellout in the music industry. Sell out to corporate. And that was essentially MTV, music for ads, no matter how cool it was to see all the videos.
As a gay man who was in his early 20s when this came out, so many people these days lack the concept of context. They hear a word and have a knee-jerk reaction to it without paying attention as to how it's used. As others have pointed out, it isn't the band calling anybody that. The song is from the point of view of the blue collar workers. They are being mocked for thinking being a rock star isn't hard work. They are small-minded and don't understand how tough it is to make it to the top, and their use of "that word" only emphasizes their limited view of the world. The workers may be using the word in an offensive manner, but that doesn't make the song offensive. Dire Straits never meant to insult or offend anybody. You can hear their voices dripping sarcasm. I can't speak for the entire LGBTQ+ community, but this song never offended me or any other gay person I know. We understand the difference between when we're being slurred, and when the word is being used to portray a character in a bad light.
As a gay man who also grew up in this era, you are absolutely right. Society has now deteriorated to such a point that if you hear any word like this you are 'obliged' to be outraged and offended. As for the so-called LBGTQ++++++ 'community', it is no longer a community that I want anything to do with. It has become captured and taken over by radical political activists, seeking to impose their views and lifestyles on all of society, including children and women, to its and their detriment.
Song is NOT from the point of view of the blue collar workers. It’s from the point of view of an observer of the conversation of the blue collar workers, describing what he heard. The observer is Mark.
The song backstory: Mark was in a big electronic box store in New York once. The whole back wall was covered in tvs and every one was tuned to MTV. Mark overheard two employees in the store talking about videos that were on MTV and Mark started copying down things the two guys were saying, including how they installed microwave ovens and delivered custom kitchens.
Weird Al asked Mark if he could make the parody Beverly Hillbillies. Mark agreed but only if he played guitar on the song. By this time Mark had the solo refined and it might be faster on the Weird Al version. Weird Al talks about it on the commentary for U.H.F.🤓
As someone who's been playing guitar since 1980, you have no idea how many people I've heard over the years literally say "I should have learnt to play the guitar." This was the first song to be played on MTV Europe and to be honest. No truer lyrics have ever been written.
Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits wrote the song "Money for Nothing" in 1985 after overhearing a conversation between two workers in a New York hardware store while watching MTV. The workers were making fun of the musicians on the screen, joking that they were making millions of dollars without doing any work. Knopfler thought the idea was brilliant and started writing down the lyrics using a pen and paper. He wanted to write the song from the perspective of the workers, using some of the language they used, and to reflect their envy of the wealth and adoration of rock stars. The song also explores the labor theory of value, which states that a laborer's time and toil give value to a product or service
The reason people are watching you is because you’re doing a great analysis of all styles of music and your wonderment of the older music is amazing and fun to watch. 😊❤

They’re singing it From the perspective that they’re working their asses off in a furniture store delivering furniture, and these guys are on television with their earrings in the make up, not working at all. They see the band is having the easy life and not having to work for their money.
The reason for the lyrics is that he wrote the song after overhearing delivery workers complaining that pop stars were getting money for nothing while they had to work all day installing kitchens and TV's!
“I want my MTV!” Back in the 80s MTV was a brand new channel that helped revolutionize the music industry via the music video. This was one of the first videos that really shined on that channel. MTV is still around but they haven’t been strictly music in over 20 years
Yeah, The "M" should not be in the Title of"MTV" ever since the year 2000 when MUSIC was replaced by Gangster Rap & one hour & half hour REALITY SHOWS that all sucked! There is NO MUSIC ON TV ANYMORE. The World Wide Web/Internet bought it all up!
The whole thing just pisses me off! MTV was the best part of my early teens. I was 13 when the channel premiered and I couldn’t get enough. Now you wouldn’t even know that channel even existed.
These guys broached the subject so to speak. In fact, they shattered it. They weren't dissing anyone. They brought it out to make us think about it. And we all did!
A lot of people think this was the very first video ever played on MTV it wasn't, but it was the first week. The very first one was" Video Killed the Radio Star"
Actually, one of the things I like most about Mark Knopfler’s songs is that they are generally stories, both the ones he’s written for Dire Straits and in his solo and collaborative performances. Sultans of Swing, Telegraph Road, Done with Bonaparte, Lights of Taormina, Sailing to Philadelphia, Brothers in Arms, Postcards from Paraguay, Long Cool Girl, Tunnel of Love, Golden Heart, If This is Good-bye and many more. Songs about history, people, events - all fascinating both musically and lyrically.
Im 72 and it has taken about 60 years to come to the realization that from the 60's through the 80's so many of the top bands were British and I didn't even know! I mean yeah, the British Invasion but somewhere along the line I really blew it. Thanks to Great Britain for all the wonderful top notch music❤.
They didn't blow it. The friggin people went stupid and got into worthless rap. I don't even classify rap as music. It's just sleezy drivel to a boring synthesized fake arse beat. No talent needed.
Totally agree. Everyone today is expected to be "politically correct" at all times over fear of being canceled or sent to the personnel office. That song would not have become a hit if the line was "that little LGBQ person with the earing and the makeup . . .". Back in my day (I'm 75) we said what we meant without having to over analyze each word over fear of offending some thin skinned angry self appointed PC enforcer.
To further your Dire Straits journey, it's got to be the alchemy live version of Telegraph Road, a total tour de force from the whole band. It's long, but by God, you don't want it to end!
Anecdotally, Mark was in a hardware store, and his song "Sultans of Swing" came on the display TVs, and he heard the stocker/delivery guys bitching and moaning about how the f*****s on MTV had such easy lives. He grabbed his notebook and a pencil, then proceeded to follow the guys around the store, copying down everything they said. Then he put it all into a song, and, in so doing, created one of the most recognisable guitar riffs of all time. Mark and his brother are Glaswegians, so the f word has a far different connotation, especially in that era.
That whole intro is legendary, and the riff is just insane. To this day, this is the first song I play on any new speakers/headphones/amps to test them out - it covers a huge dynamic range, and it's totally kick-ass, what's not to love. Btw, Mark stopped using the f-slur when he plays this live a bunch of years back - the 80s were a different time, when that word got thrown around way too casually, and he was directly quoting what he heard in the convo that inspired the song, but he's changed it with the times. Great choice, and great reaction as always - cheers from Canada!
@@dbradx You are completely missing the point, and at the same time supporting mine. He is mocking those that use that language. The only people that would be offended by it are those that do not bother to consider the context. No word is offensive as a word, or do you want to cancel dictionaries?
@@dopiaza2006 100% correct. Back in the 80's kids would think "sticks and stones will break my bones but names (words) will never hurt me." Friggen snowflakes/drama queens are offended at everyone who thinks different than them!!! LOL Just enjoy the music.

When you're ready to enjoy some more of Dire's Straits' amazing musicianship and Mark's outstanding guitar playing and musical composition, check out "Telegraph Road" (a masterpiece) and "Once Upon a Time in the West," both from Alchemy Live.

Knopfler over heard a discussion between 2 workers in a white goods store and MTV was playing on a tv in the store and they were moaning that playing in a band wasnt a proper job as they had to install fridges, TVs etc...thats where the lyrics come from. The other voice is Sting.
I Want My MTV became a mantra for the early 80s teens, as cable companies were removing MTV from their line up due to customer complaints (basically parents, who were the paying customers). It was the summer between my Junior and Senior year of high school when MTV started. It was 24 hours of videos hosted by V-Jays (No reality shows etc). We instantly became hooked on watching, some parents weren't thrilled.

In this song, Marek satirizes the music industry through the eyes of a storekeeper in an electrical appliance store, whom he overheard and directly used the phrases used by him in the stanzas and chorus. Dire Straits is an incredibly versatile band. Next time try "Calling Elvis" from their 1992 "On the Night" live album.

One word QUEEN! They covered just about every genre of music. If you start on that journey it will be one helluva ride. Brian May incredible lead guitarist, and Freddie Mercury rated the best front man and vocalist. I've a feeling you could be shocked at how many extra followers you will get
Brian May is a cosmic-level superstar; legendary rocker from the '70s and decades onwards, then actual goddamn astro-physicist who was on the asteroid "Bennu" sample return mission which was in the news not very long ago at all. And he still has the rocker hair too, as astro-physicist! :D (It's just a bit greyer nowadays tho...)
Love the band, Mark Knopfler and his playing and the reaction. Hey - having a Dire Straits reboot these few days and found your 'reaction' channel. Love it. Why? Unlike many younger viewers who have never been introduced to the great bands of the past; your reactions are so honest and not masked by a veneer of trying to "stay cool" - seen too much of that in other videos. This is what happens when you put absolute talent and wit together - Dire Straits. In Canada, MTV was on 24/7, we saw and heard all types of music. Another great reaction!
This came out when I was 5. I’ve got such a vivid memory of my dad being so impressed because at that age, on first listen, I knew who was doing the “I want my mtvvvvvv” The things you randomly remember 😂
Brilliant! You are completely correct, Offence is not given, it's taken! Remember that. Mark Knopfler overheard two guys in a White Goods Store, and wrote the song based on their conversation: "The lead character in "Money for Nothing" is a guy who works in the hardware department in a television/custom kitchen/refrigerator/microwave appliance store. He's singing the song. I wrote the song when I was actually in the store. I borrowed a bit of paper and started to write the song down in the store. I wanted to use a lot of the language that the real guy actually used when I heard him, because it was more real." And if you are into "a good snare drum", check out Bill Bruford. He was in Yes (he played on Roundabout) for their first 5 albums, then moved to King Crimson, had his own band called Bruford and a band called UK. Bill is an amazing drummer.
I think Sultans of Swing is their biggest, but you are so correct about this being their most significant lick. It's also an tone on the guitar that hasn't been replicated even by Mark Knopfler, because he FORGOT what settings he used 🤣!
I don't even know Brothers in Arms, never heard it. Sultans of Swing and Money for Nothing were huge hits. Two of the biggest of that generation. You could not avoid hearing them everywhere.
It's because you are not used to simple lyrics, they are working as movers, and they look at those rock stars and they are envious, easy life and easy money.

Exactly!
@@Grungycat67 100000000% agree
Yep I was in high school, we’d book it home (or to friends house who had cable lol) and watch it religiously 😊
Clarification: It was the first song on MTV *Europe*, (the American MTV was already ion air)
And it did.
Back in the day we were blown away by these epic computer graphics, don't mock us dinosaurs 🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 sadly true ❤
I loved growing up in the 80s and 90s. I miss it dearly
Yeah
Not sure for my parents but as a kid
It was fun 🙃
Sometimes it's not about the lyrics. Sometimes it's just about the music
The 1983 Gibson Les Paul Standard reissue guitar Knopfler played on the song sold for £592,200 in a Christie's auction in London
i am now 57 years old. this is the music of my youth. it blows my mind that you have to worry about it being offensive
Their sound is so iconic. I always thought that they were from America when I was young, but they're a British band.
To further your Dire Straits journey, it's got to be the alchemy live version of Telegraph Road, a total tour de force from the whole band. It's long, but by God, you don't want it to end!
It really is One of the great guitar riffs of all time. The tone on that guitar is awesome! That’s the distortion we all try to get.
Your views on being offended just made me appreciate you more ❤
Old lady gen-x love from Ohio!
Old lady boomer agrees with you from Texas ❤
"Walk Of Life" should be the next one you do from these guys.
That guitar sound still gives me goosebumps
Dire straits are legendary this is a really good one bro 🤘💚💛❤️
Iconic riff of the early 80s and one of the most instantly identifiable
All it means is that they have EVERYTHING
The lead singer visited NY city and overheard 2 workers in an appliance store talking and reiterated stuff they were saying
Remember this is many decades ago ! The life of a band during these times 70's and 80's, Those thing were what the times were!
I remember when this came out. The story behind the song was really cool.
that intro in the album lasts 1:51....take your headphones, turn up the volume and listen to how that drum sounds and the riff guitar.
Every time I hear this song, I blast the intro! 😁
Declan, it was a real joy to watch your face when you heard the opening iconic riff for the first time. Glad you're becoming a Dire Straits fan.
Sting offers the backing vocals
Anecdotally, Mark was in a hardware store, and his song "Sultans of Swing" came on the display TVs, and he heard the stocker/delivery guys bitching and moaning about how the f*****s on MTV had such easy lives. He grabbed his notebook and a pencil, then proceeded to follow the guys around the store, copying down everything they said. Then he put it all into a song, and, in so doing, created one of the most recognisable guitar riffs of all time. Mark and his brother are Glaswegians, so the f word has a far different connotation, especially in that era.
Best riff of all time coming out of a song about household appliances, what a legend mark knopfler is
He wants to be a rock star but he’s delivering appliances! Simple dude!
Dire Straits with Mark Knopfler,,, always a treat. Sting sang the background vocals on this one.
I've probably heard that intro riff a thousand times, and it still gives me goosebumps every time, ha
He doesn't use the word becasue he knows people are too stupid these days to realise the context. He should use it. Not like he needs the money!
@@dopiaza2006 No, he doesn't use it because he's a decent human being who knows that it's extremely offensive to a lot of people 😀
@@dbradx You are completely missing the point, and at the same time supporting mine. He is mocking those that use that language. The only people that would be offended by it are those that do not bother to consider the context. No word is offensive as a word, or do you want to cancel dictionaries?
@@dopiaza2006 100% correct. Back in the 80's kids would think "sticks and stones will break my bones but names (words) will never hurt me." Now in the mid 2020's younger folks are offended at words and consider them equal to sticks and stones. Talk about the "pussification" of the world. Friggen snowflakes/drama queens are offended at everyone who thinks different than them!!! LOL Just enjoy the music.
@@jr.resendes7373They are like sticks and stones to others. Just because you don't get told you're worthless every day, or feel it, doesn't mean it's doesn't happen to others. Say/hear it enough time and you start to believe it. And it's hard to come back from that.
My man's about to discover that Sting was once cool!
Fun Fact: Not only is Mark an incredible guitar player, who finger plucks, he is also actually left-handed but plays with his right hand 😉. When you're ready to enjoy some more of Dire's Straits' amazing musicianship and Mark's outstanding guitar playing and musical composition, check out "Telegraph Road" (a masterpiece) and "Once Upon a Time in the West," both from Alchemy Live.
I was going to explain the song but I see that has been done already so I’ll just add that you’re numbers are growing because you’re bloody adorable!❤🇨🇦
Knopfler over heard a discussion between 2 workers in a white goods store and MTV was playing on a tv in the store and they were moaning that playing in a band wasnt a proper job as they had to install fridges, TVs etc...thats where the lyrics come from.
The other voice is Sting.
What is a white goods store?
@@stanleymyrick4068 Pretty sure it is British slang for an appliance store as most appliances are white.
@@stanleymyrick4068It's what they call the group of things that are found in kitchens primarily eg. washing machines, tumble dryers, kettles etc.
@@stevew7719 Thanks
Your explanation was much better than mine. Thanks.
Working vs. Playing music
Money for nothing
Dire Straits my favourite band, Mark Knopfler is a wizard on a guitar, Money for Nothing is the song that got me in to Dire Straits, the Alchemy concert is phenomenal, Mark's guitar playing is out of this world, Telegraph Road, Sultans of Swing, Tunnel of Love, Alchemy Live Concert is a masterpiece, unreal guitar playing, Terry Williams on Drums Wow. Keep the excellent work up MollyBoy, you are doing brilliant 🤟👍
These guys are unique, one of those bands that’s instantly recognizable, good shit bro
One of the best opening Riffs ever i reckon
He is now 74 but can still play the best
It's so much fun for me to see you listen to Clapton, Dire Straights, Seger and Steve Perry and more of the greats and to hear them again. I still listen to these great artists all the time. Love your channel.
Tunnel of love.
I love you so much!!! I live in Tulsa Oklahoma I'm a 67 year old female who loves to watch you enjoy our music. Here in Oklahoma we have had some of the best bands come from here. Keep jamming to some of the best music ever made. It's probably why you hearing it today. Just think how blown your mind would be if you could have been there than. My husband played with some of the best bands in the day. His favorite band is between The Who or Ozzie. Do you want other genres to listen to? If so we will send you music you have not even heard of, mind blowing music. I asked you on another comment asking you to play a song from Beth Hart singing "I'd rather go blind" playing with Joe Bonamassa this WILL blow your mind. You want Jazz she's sooo good. Thanks for reading this. A fan of yours!!!
I loved your face when you heard that first riff!! It matched ours
when it first came out. The U.K. contributed hugely to the music
industry. Back in the day, it was called “the British Invasion “
which, of course, was started by the Fab Four. You’ll be getting
a lot of suggestions so enjoy…and I’ll be watching. Peace
Tunnel of Love and Telegraph Road next MollyBoy!
Gotta be the live versions off Alchemy Live …..
The first video MTV played of theirs...the best night ever!
One word QUEEN! They covered just about every genre of music. If you start on that journey it will be one helluva ride. Brian May incredible lead guitarist, and Freddie Mercury rated the best front man and vocalist. I've a feeling you could be shocked at how many extra followers you will get
Great shout. If Dire Straits gives him goosebumps, Queen would blow his mind into Orbit. I love DS but Queen is another level
If you want more Dire Straits, i recommend "One World" "Brothers in Arms" "Industrial Disease" "Romeo and Juliet" "Tunnel of Love" "Your Latest Trick" "On Every Street". A couple of those are just personal favorites but there are a LOT of great DS tunes. You almost cant go wrong with them. Happy reacting!
Keep it real and keep up the reactions!
It's the opening of this song, cranked to 11, to test any audio system.
This is what happens when you put absolute talent and wit together - Dire Straits. In Canada, MTV was on 24/7, we saw and heard all types of music. Another great reaction!
This came out when I was 5.
I’ve got such a vivid memory of my dad being so impressed because at that age, on first listen, I knew who was doing the “I want my mtvvvvvv”
The things you randomly remember 😂
You’re a gem. Love this channel. Thank you.
Definitely a classic, pretty sure this was when MTV first started airing music videos too
At that time ALL THEY DID was music videos, all day, every day. No crappy reality programming, just music videos.
He listed to strangers talking about the videos, and musicians in general.
Then he wrote the song.
Thanks Mark.
The anthem of a generation.
Telegraph road live. Talk about chills.
It's the contrast between WORKING for a living and just playing and singing to support yourself!
The first video “Ever” to be played on MTV I believe
no that is not true.
This was the first CGI video on MTV.
Best 80's intro of a song PERIOD no other song can do that
So Far Away is my favorite Dire Straits song.
Brilliant! You are completely correct, Offence is not given, it's taken! Remember that.
Mark Knopfler overheard two guys in a White Goods Store, and wrote the song based on their conversation:
"The lead character in "Money for Nothing" is a guy who works in the hardware department in a television/custom kitchen/refrigerator/microwave appliance store.
He's singing the song. I wrote the song when I was actually in the store.
I borrowed a bit of paper and started to write the song down in the store. I wanted to use a lot of the language that the real guy actually used when I heard him, because it was more real."
And if you are into "a good snare drum", check out Bill Bruford. He was in Yes (he played on Roundabout) for their first 5 albums, then moved to King Crimson, had his own band called Bruford and a band called UK. Bill is an amazing drummer.
Brothers in Arms may be the most famous Dire Straits Song, but the Money for Nothing intro is definitely their signature lick, and always will be.
This is the best music reaction channel on UA-cam. Keep up the awesome work MOLLYBOY!!
It's because you are not used to simple lyrics, they are working as movers, and they look at those rock stars and they are envious, easy life and easy money.
Sultan of Swing was released in 1978, I was 23. Money for nothing was the premire song for MTV when it shows began.
The full album version has a much longer intro build up with Sting and ending bit too.
Good choice 👍
Great reaction, haven't heard this in decades
