David Lee Roth is HUGE into martial arts. Heck, he currently has an apartment near the dojo he trains at in Japan. In a few videos he pulls out a sword and shows off a bit with that as well . PLEASE do a reaction for Eddie VanHalen’s Eruption 🙏 Truly mind blowing!

You are exactly right when you say, "if you could encapsulate the 80's in a video, Van Halen is it." I think at that time we were just tired and weary of the seriousness of the 60's and 70's, and we were really longing for some fun party songs that lifted our spirits, but where the lyrics were not too heavy and not very deep with meaning.

He was a mind blowing guitarist - and when Van Halen came on the scene in the late 70’s - after years of the disco era - his playing blew a lot of minds and reinvigorated rock guitar. He is the motivation for a lot of the guitar players who came after him. An absolute legend.

A lot of guitar fans freaked out when this came out. This was on their 6th album and by that time, Eddie Van Halen was known as the greatest guitarist around. So to hear a song where he was (gasp) playing synth - an instrument that was showing up in every pop and rock act in those days - got people saying "VH sold out", etc. Still, it was their highest charting single at #1 and certified platinum. Eddie was still able to fit a solo in there anyway.

Eddie started as a classical pianist...they were immigrants from Holland and his dad was musical. He and his brother....the drummer...won piano competitions. Then Eddie got a drum set while Alex got a guitar. Alex took over Eddie's drums so Eddie gave the guitar a try. Early in he didn't have money for the guitars he wanted so he built his guitar out of pieces. Just amazing...and he always had that beautiful smile that made him look like he was up to something. You were right about the synth. Synthesizers/keyboards..it's amazing the sounds that you can get out of them. I would agree that you could say Jump was an anthem. Definitely their most well known song, but not typical VH. Their music is very guitar led and if you want to know why, please please please check out Eddie Van Halen, Eruption solo, live without a net version. Eddie was known as a guitar God and it's hard to appreciate this group without a proper understanding of who exactly you are dealing with. This particular song really doesn't show that side of him since it was more synth heavy.

His brother Alex on drums and Mickey Anthony on bass. Van halen has many great songs. Roth was lead singer till 1986. Then Sammy Hagar took over singing. Sammy reinvented van halen, he showcased the many talents of Eddie and took van halen to new highs with many number 1 hits. Some of my favorites are. They rarely took full advantage of Eddie's guitar playing prowess. Most their guitar solos were quite brief.

A valid point. Maybe the keyboard work was more important to the hit machine and the guitar work was more important to subsequent players. To the linear thinkers: more than one truth can exist concurrently.

    • @GrimrDirge
      @GrimrDirge 3 роки тому +1

@@CCDzine I can explain better now that I'm not typing on a phone. Obviously Eddie's guitar style was revolutionary and brilliant, and continues to inspire generations of guitar players, beyond dispute. I think his point is that if you listen to tracks like Right Now, Dreams, Jump, When It's Love, and so on, it was the piano/keyboard that made Van Halen accessible to a much wider audience thank guitar virtuosity alone (which just doesn't appeal to everyone).
I blew him off when he said it back in the OU812 days but the notion grows on me over time.

Tell your dad that saying Eddie's synth playing took precedence over the guitar-work is like saying Aerosmith's Steven Tyler's harmonica playing was more important than his vocals... He'll get a kick out of that one.😂

David Lee Roth is the all time goat when it comes to the front man of a band. His vocals aren’t the best IMO but his whoops, whoas and yells make it work. You should check out more of their classics (so many) such as runnin with devil, unchained, Panama and Right Now. Keep up the good work! 👍

1984! It took us almost 2 hours to get ready for school. A lot of work was required for 80s hair and makeup! 🤣
I'm out the door 40 years later for work in about 20 minutes.
We 80s kids are embarrassed but proud of our 80s hair. We destroyed the atmosphere with AquaNet hairspray!
I'm so glad I was a teenager in the 80s. Van Halen was one of the posters I had on my bedroom wall!

The guitarist is Eddie Ván Halen, maybe the BEST guitarist EVER, seriously the best. And the singer David Lee Roth was a great frontman and a martial artist as you already figured that out by his spits and kicks. Great 80’s band. Check their other sons “Dreams”.

Keyboards and synthesizers were pretty much one in the same. at that time/era, all the rock bands started using synths/keyboards to add to their music toolbox. In this case, Eddie Van Halen (RIP) (the guy in yellow tiger print top) could play the hell out of the keyboards, AND was a world-class guitarist - one of the best ever - and he played the guitar sequence in Beat It (MJ Thriller album).
Van Halen went through a major change when they let go of David Lee Roth (acrobatic singer man) and replaced him with Sammy Hagar - after the album (called "1984" as a homage to the Orwell book called 1984 released in the year....1984), This was the album Jump was on.
After Roth was replaced by Hagar, the fanbase split in half with "purists" only liking Roth based Halen, and the others who accepted the change.
IMO both were amazing singers, and both led to incredible songs being made. Though most of my favorite songs are from the Roth era - especially my two favorite both from their first album: Running With The Devil, and Janey's Crying (which you can hear Ton Loc sampled this latter one).

First, I am a big fan of your broadcasts.
This video really takes me back. I was very young, just moved to NYC, got a job with a really bid design firm, and just married my wife. Everything was so brand new back then, including "videos" and MTV and DVD players - with "remote controls" (WOW!!!), and, BIG SCREEN TVs - (WOW!!!).
My wife and I were standing in front of a TV store on upper MIdTown Manhattan, watching what the store was playing on their big TV screen (which at that time was about 36" (WOW!!!!!)), and this is the video that came on. Our very first (shared) MTV video together. Of course we stepped inside the store and bought a DVD player (with a remote control, NEC brand - which was really "cool" back then - the equipment panel would 'slide out' of the machine when you touched the remote control buttons), and proudly brought it home. It took a couple of days for us to realize that we also needed a TV screen to make it work, but to buy 'both' at the same time was too expensive - we were both young and just starting out and had limited funds. So, sadly, almost in a mild depression, we returned the DVD player with the automatic ejection panel and remote control, and purchased a truly beautiful NEC 36" large screen TV.
Our first movie that we watched inside our Upper West Side apartment, where models would be filmed outside on the street and movies were also filmed, was "The Natural" with Robert Redford. Just for the 'memories' of that moment, The Natural remains a fav film of mine.
Again, another great show of yours! Thanks for the memories!!!
